What do you mean “We won”? Try walking down any street looking like an
American and see if we won or not. |

[The
Trial of the Century] This senseless crime gave gays a bad name. In 1924
Leopold, 19 and Loeb, 18 wanted to commit the perfect crime so they stopped
their car and kidnapped Loeb’s 14 year old cousin and brained him. They
dumped the kid‘s body in a culvert and Leopold, mistakenly, dropped his
glasses there too. They did everything wrong that they possibly could and
were caught shortly thereafter. They pretended to hold the murdered boy for
$10,000 ransom. Collecting the ransom was the most dangerous part. They came
up with a foolproof plan to have the boy’s rich father throw a packet with
the money in it from the train that traveled south of Chicago along the
elevated tracks west of Lake Michigan. They would be waiting below in their
car and scoop the money up as soon as the ransom hit the ground and be on
their way. It didn’t work out that way and they were caught and confessed.
Leopold said they did it solely for the thrill of the experience. “A thirst
for knowledge is highly commendable, no matter what extreme pain or injury
it may inflict upon others.) Nice.
Clarence Darrow took the
case because he was highly against the death penalty. He believed that we
were predisposed to our actions at birth and were not responsible for them
if they were predetermined. He also believed that an excess or deficiency of
certain hormones affected mental alterations in the afflicted person.
Brilliantly, Darrow pleaded them guilty thus avoiding a trial. Now he only
had to try to get them as little punishment as he could. Surely if he had
gone before a jury they would have received the death penalty. The country
was incensed at the crime and there was a mood of homophobia across the
land. Now Darrow had to convince the judge that they were mentally ill—a
medical condition. Psychiatrists, for a fee, from both sides delivered
bizarre testimony supporting their client’s differing views completely
contradicting each other.
They were sentenced to
99 years for the kidnapping and life for the murder. In 1939 inside
Statesville Prison James Loeb was stabbed to death in the shower. Nathan
Leopold served 33 years and in 1933 he was paroled, moved to Puerto Rico,
married, wrote about birds and visited Chicago frequently. He died in 1971
at age 66. |

[What
goes around, comes around] My comments are based on Saturday's
Keynoter, which has articles about Dixie and Sonny, in which Sonny made
a complaint about the media being in lockstep.
To
Dixie and Sonny: How does it feel to be on the losing end of "Lockstep"?
Welcome to our world (for all the times we spoke before you and you did not
heed, or respect us.) To hear you 2 whining about the media, and mood for
change is laughable, and sad. Clearly, you 2 still refuse to accept
responsibility for your actions. As my grandmother would say, you reap what
you sow. What goes around, comes around. It's nice to be able to actually
see the circle completed. |

According to Sloan’s blog “Mayor Mario
DiGennaro endorsed my Democrat opponent Heather Carruthers on Bill Becker’s
US 1 Radio show yesterday morning.”
Commissioner Mario Di Gennaro did not endorse
me on Bill Becker’s radio show yesterday (Friday 8/29/08). Here is a
verbatim transcript of their exchange which is available in audio form at http://www.us1radio.com/morningmagazine.cfm
Mario Di Gennaro: “Go back to the elections.
One thing I was very pleasantly surprised about…I’m not picking one person
who runs against another…I really admired Heather Carruthers. The way she
spoke to Sonny and thanked him for his service and everything. I also want
to thank my other fellow commissioners out there for their service, but
Heather did a marvelous job and I really respected her for it. I was
pleasantly surprised.
Bill Becker: “Are you
backing Heather in this ?“
Mario Di Gennaro: ”I’m not
backing and I’m not getting involved. I’m not backing anyone. I was there. I
happened to be there when Heather walked in and spoke to Sonny and spoke to
Dixie and thanked them for their service. It impressed me, so I say what I
think.”
The
other statement in your blog “Heather has offered Dixie a job as her
(Heather’s) aide, if Heather is elected.” is absolutely untrue.
I
kindly ask you to retract and correct these errors on your blog as soon as
possible. ~Heather

[The Movies] If the aliens (from space not Mexico) invaded and won, and
we had to move to Mars and could only take one Si-Fi move with us, I’d take
the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers. That is the greatest Si-Fi movie of

[Fear Sells] Obama's personal manifesto, The
Audacity of Hope, is Obama’s paean to Obama. The book and his fawning media
coverage have spawned a cult of personality. Obamists’ are so intoxicated
that they purposefully choose to ignore the harsh reality of Obama. Obama
had a solidly middle class upbringing. Obama’s youth was mundane. He
received a fine primary, secondary, under grad and grad education as have
millions of others. Obama chose to become a community organizer ostensibly
to battle with an evil Democrat city government. Notwithstanding his mundane
background, Obama developed oratorical skills. When Obama decided to seek
political office he first made a reasoned choice to aggressively seek
blessings, funding, support, and guidance of two locally politically
powerful individuals--the Ayers.
They proudly trumpet their
history of violent criminal activity including attempting murder in the
pursuit of their left wing political agenda. These two individuals presided
over the genesis of the Obama political career and have been an integral
component of Obama’s professional and personal life for decades. Obama made
a reasoned choice to associate personally and professionally with an
individual who is a convicted corruptor of politicians. Indeed Obama made a
reasoned choice to seek and accept this individual’s financial assistance
when he purchased his mansion.
Obama made a reasoned
choice to seek out an individual of great political influence in that
community to be his mentor, friend and pastor. Obama fostered an intimate
relationship with that man that spans more than two decades. That that
individual is a self aggrandizing firebrand racist who Obama proudly states
has greatly influenced his life.
Obama began running for
the Presidency at the moment he was selected to give a major speech at the
Democrat convention of 2004. Obama, an absentee Senator, has had virtually
no legislative successes. Obama has done nothing but seek the presidency
since2004. Nonetheless the true believers are passionately convinced that
he is suited to be the President. Obama has demonized segments of our
population, convincing many that the masses suffer from predations of the
few who prosper. Obama has taken soaring oratorical skills and hypocrisy
and woven them into a golden cloak that dazzles and blinds far too many
Americans. Obama’s resume is as bereft of professional accomplishment as it
is of executive experience. Nonetheless, the true believers have concluded
that “attractiveness”, “grace”, oratorical prowess and “charm” are
overarching Presidential attributes. It strikes me that Obama lusts to
become a leader who will be served rather than a leader who will serve.
History is replete with individuals who have risen from modest beginnings,
have few accomplishments, but have capitalized on oratorical prowess, and
pursued a path to power by exploiting class envy and demonizing those who
prosper. These leaders all were all initially imbued with grace and charm,
they all nurtured a class of true believers that morphed into myrmidons, and
many authored a personal manifesto. They all promised cradle to grave
government succor. Can we forget the huge adoring crowds, the proscenium;
the elaborate staged productions thereon, the banners, the fireworks, the
music, and the rousing speeches decrying the enemies of the masses in Berlin
in the late 1920’s. Pray we never forget. |

In
New Jersey, teachers start at around $50,000 to $60,000 a year with
pensions and full paid benefits. The teachers in New Jersey are sucking
every bit of money from the property owners and driving people out of the
state. It is a real shame. They expect not to pay for any part of their
health insurance and want full pensions. Get real, this is 2008. New
Jersey will go completely bankrupt because of them. Teachers also have it
made in there with all the help they get in the classes. Aides, etc. Most
don't sit and eat with the students like when we grew up. Their union
has Trenton wrapped around their warped greedy finger so nothing will be
done until the property owners make one last stand with pitch forks after
their last red cent was taken from them. |

Regarding my post about Bill
Maher. I did not say "left wing truths". Those are your words, not mine.
I simply said "truth". Period. If I wanted to say "left wing truths" I would
have written it that way. What gives you the right to embellish my
submission or any submission for that matter? Print it as it is written or
don't print it at all which will probably be the fate of this post. |

Yep, there is no recession. Everything is cheaper. Yes, George W. is

[A
week in Las Vegas]
I did that about a year ago and I was a
bit dismayed. The traffic is a lot worse, it has positively
ballooned
in size and construction is everywhere. There seem to
be an awful lot of NY accents hawking to pedestrians along the strip. (Is
that where the Times Square evictees all landed?). However, the casinos,
shows, hotels, etc. are all you'd expect for showiness and extravagance. |

Who's idea was it for Jerry Coleman to
write any policy/procedures for the County? Was it his, or did some
County staff or commissioner solicit, encourage, or suggest it? Obvious, at
least to me, Mario wants George punished, so Mario looks around for some
"solution" to something only Mario perceives to be a problem. Now, just
guessing, but it looks like since Jerry's "sure things" are gone, he's
cozying up to the remaining gang-of-three-er, hoping for a friendly ear.
(that's kind of smart, actually.) So it’s a perfect fit - one sees a
problem, the other offers a solution, and thus, an ear is born. It’ll be
good to remember (for 2010) that history repeats itself, and you're known by
your actions. My l little convoluted point is - Jerry's now Mario's wing
man. Watch out Mario! |

[Biden too old] As
soon as I heard that Obama selected Joe Biden as his running mate a cold
chill was felt in my spine. If the democrats were somehow able to pull off
a win this fall, we would have a 44 year old man in the White House and an
antique Senator who represents all that is old-time-unchanging Washington
just a heartbeat away from the presidency. That, my friends is
frightening. Obama just threw away every argument you left-wingers ever had
against McCain. This is nothing more than a thinly disguised desperate
attempt by the democrats to attract opponents-of-change-right-wing voters to
their campaign. Vote for McCain. |

After
seeing all the fuss about the Monroe County school superintendant Randy
Acevedo’s current economic crisis personally and professionally, I
decided to check the Monroe County Clerks Public records on line. Here is
what I found.
-October 18, 2000
Acevedo’s mortgage: Keys Federal Credit Union. $150,000 adjustable rate
mortgage for thirty years at an Interest rate 8.5%.
-On May 1, 2001 Acevedo refinanced $225,000 at Keys Federal Credit Union.
Adjustable rate mortgage, thirty years interest rate 7.75%.
-On the June 19, 2001 the Acevedos satisfied the $150,000 first mortgage and
collected $75,000 in Equity from the $225,000 loan.
-On October 29, 2001 Acevedo’s got a second mortgage for $88,000 from Keys
Federal Credit Union.
At this point they owed
$313,000in mortgages. They had $88k (2nd mgt) plus the $75k (from equity)
which equals $163,000 of cash to them. The house originally cost $150,000!
-On November 14, 2001
Acevedos refinanced at Keys Federal Credit Union a $368,000 Adjustable rate
mortgage.
-On September 18th 2006 Monique J Acevedo was granted a voluntary dismissal
by Plaintiff Capitol One Bank; credit card problems?
-On January 23, 2007 Acevedos refinanced again for $435,500 Master Financial
Inc, a California Corporation. Adjustable rate rider payments interest only.
So if they paid off the $368,000 they should have had a (profit) left over
sum of $67,000.
This is a very risky thing
to do with a house that originally sold for $150K. Now they have $285,000 in
equity cash but they still owe $435,000. If they paid back the $285K they
would owe $150,000 dollars (the original price of the house).
-On July 18, 2008 Master
Financial sold Acevedo’s mortgage to Saxon Mortgage services.
-On July 29, 2008 Saxon Mortgage filed a Notice Lis Pendens against the
Acevedo Mortgage. This is a foreclosure.
Something just doesn’t make sense. He has a degree in computers and business
and he has run the school district for 4 years. His personal finances look

I had
read many times that Heather Carruthers owns a Guest House, but now I
read that it is Pearls. Is that true? She had my vote 100% until I read
that. How can someone who owns a business who does not allow males on the
property for any reason to give equal opportunity to all citizens of Monroe
County? A male repairman or meter reader couldn't even step foot on her
property but she wants to govern a county and expects us to think male
citizens will have the same treatment as females? That would be like
electing someone who owns a "Whites Only" business or a "No Homos Allowed"
business. Heather, you had my vote, but not anymore. I'd rather keep the
gang of three. At least they were up front about their intentions. You
just lost one supporter. |

I
received reports from two Keys women that our soon ex-County Mayor
Mario DiGennaro endorsed my Democrat opponent Heather Carruthers on
Bill Becker’s US 1 Radio show yesterday morning. My immediate response
was incredulity. My next response was I wondered how Heather felt about
that, after what Mario and his county commissioner sexist gay-bashing
chauvinist pig buddy, Sonny McCoy, recently did in a county commission
meeting to Heather’s gay friend, Diane Bureldsen?
My next response was wondering what Mario is
trying to get for Mario?
My next response was I remembered the night of the Key West primary last
fall, after Jimmy Weekley nearly took it without a runoff and incumbent
Mayor Morgan McPherson came in second in a multi-candidate field, in
which I was one of the candidates. Mario called me within an hour of the
results coming in and bugged me very hard to do everything I could to
get “that boy” reelected. Repeatedly Mario referred to Morgan as “that
boy,” and how he wanted “that boy” to remain Mayor of Key West. I wrote
about that the next morning, and told Key West people that the very last
thing they wanted was Mario having any sway in their city government. I
lobbied throughout the rest of that race against Morgan being in bed
with Mario. I begged Morgan to renounce his ties to Mario. Then Morgan
won, and everyone has since seen just how tight Morgan and Mario are.
And now Mario has endorsed Heather on US 1 Radio. If you think Mario
isn’t up to something, then you need to check yourself into the state
mental. You can bet the conch farm that Mario isn’t acting alone here.
You have to imagine that behind the scenes Sonny McCoy is in on this.
Sonny, who would not even shake Carlos Rojos’ offered hand after he, a
neophyte in Keys politics, smashed Sonny in the recent Republican
primary. Sonny, who said something nasty to Carlos, instead of
congratulating him. Shortly after which Mario asked Commissioner George
Neugent if he (Mario) could still be Mayor? George did not even answer
him.
And now Mario has endorsed heather on US 1 Radio.

The Gross Domestic Product
(GDP) showed a gain of 3.3% this quarter. That is robustly up from the
1.9% growth in the previous quarter. There is no recession, there never
was. Our unemployment rate is at, or lower than the average of the last
30 years. The US dollar has begun to surge against the Euro (many of
the Socialistic European economies are in trouble). US exports are
strong, and energy prices are declining. There is no doubt that the
economy is incredibly more robust that the Democrats would have us
believe. |

[Go
into teaching, retire and become a millionaire] Give me a break!
Talk to any of the teachers here and ask if they feel like millionaires.
Let's put into perspective what the taxes you and I pay for that go to
the school district compare to other states. New Jersey spent
$12,981 per student in 2004 -- the most among states and state
equivalents. The lowest money spent per student was Utah, Idaho
($6,028), Arizona ($6,036), Oklahoma ($6,176) and Mississippi ($6,237.
As a person who has attended the School Board meetings and seen first
hand the budget battles, this use of bloated salaries is a canard and
the real problem is the spending on technology. A few old farts on the
board don't understand computers and have no idea how important it is to
stay ahead of the technology curve. |

environment where cell phones become a huge problem. People just do not
realize that when they delay treatment, because they are talking to

someone they loved died—do not bring it with you! Cancel the
appointment. There is no reason for people to bring cell phones to an

Procedures Concerning Storm and Office
Closings. As we watch the progress of the storm, the following are
the County's guidelines based upon the hurricane's intensity:
Hurricane Category #1 No excuse for being late. Leave earlier to give
extra time to avoid fallen trees and limbs.
Hurricane Category #2 Due to the horizontal rain, you may wear jeans.
Hurricane Category #3 Whereas most of the area will be flooded we
suggest you avoid wearing open toe sandals when coming to work. Canoes
will be provided to get to the building safely without getting wet.
Hurricane Category #4 More than likely there will be no electricity.
Given that, we will have manual typewriters available to all staff
members. Please take extra caution and wear water-proof make-up if
Category 4 or above.
Hurricane Category #5 Velcro will be provided to keep you attached to
your chairs when the windows blow out. For those that survive, we will
have chocolate cake at 3:00 pm in the kitchen. |

I’ve wished that my enthusiasm for McCain was as solid as is my
disdain for Obama. In my Conservative universe, McCain’s positions on
many issues are simply too liberal. McCain’s primary win was a
disappointment to me. My enthusiasm for McCain has now gone off the top
of the scale with his choice of Governor Palin as his running mate.
This site is too small for me to list all the reasons that McCain could
not have made a better choice.
At this very second, she is better qualified to be the President of the
US than is Obama. She is the consummate reformer of government. She is
the consummate outsider, it’s damned hard to get further away from
Washington than Alaska. She is smart, fearless, aggressive, and bold.
She is a person of unassailable character; she has a real record of
reform. She is a hugely charismatic person with a family story that
will knock your socks off. She will be able to resist the media pressure
to make her a rock star celeb that would make Obama glow green with
envy. It’s amazing, but she’s actually has more executive experience
than do Obama and Biden combined. She is the CEO of an organization with
a $3 Billion dollar budget. This organization delivers health care,
cares for the elderly, provides for the public safety, delivers
pensions, manages environmental issues, manages welfare, regulates the
petroleum industry, manages the largest ecosystem in our nation, and has
thousands of employees. She is the Commander in Chief of an Air Force
and an Army (The Alaska National Guard). I’ll bet my lunch money that
she will be the 45th President of the United States. Please
have the courtesy not to needle your Democrat friends today; they’re
going to have a very bad day. |

Big Pine now has a
Park with recreational amenities
many people have longed for.
Do you remember the
public meetings for the park those many years ago? Well, I do. I remember
the surveys sent out to the public asking for suggestions regarding the new
park. I recall county risk management getting the water quality survey done,
only to discover the sad state of the water in the canal at the park
property.
Do you recall the
discussions of liability revolving around that fetid canal or the
discussions of the problems with boat trailer parking and the amount of
space it would take up? Indeed there is already a public boat ramp on West
Summerland, private ramps at Old Wooden Bridge and the Fishing Camp with
access to that boating mecca--Bogie Channel. If the truth be told, the canal
and boat basin divided the park property in half, thus making design of the
facilities desired by the community members who bothered to participate in
the planning process practically impossible.
Oh yes, I was involved
and I remember. As for the current knit picking of what has been
constructed, remember, the litigation and stall tactics from some
disgruntled residents contributed greatly to slowing the construction of the
park. Because of that delay construction prices rose thus necessitating the
down sizing of the community center and the abandonment of some of the
planned amenities in an effort to reduce costs, stay within budget and still
get the park built.
Concerning a pool on the
property, the county has said all along that they will not build a pool
anywhere. Even so, they agreed to place a footprint for one on the
master plan should the local citizenry do as Key Largo did and either raise
the money through donations or a special taxing district. If you want to see
a public pool on Big Pine get busy and make it happen. So stop complaining
and enjoy what we have. Improvements will come with time. The waterfront
will be cleaned up, more trees can be planted and there is already talk of a
Bocce League being started. We have waited this long for this recreational
gem to be built so have some patience for the day-to-day bugs to get worked
out. Stop with the whining and start a Friends of the Park organization to
fundraise for improvements. Enjoy this new park and help make it a place to
take continued pride in.

He was my Arizona cowboy. He was a special cat and I loved him very much. My

Today’s post is a
summation of my experiences with Internal Affairs in the Sheriff
Office after filing the complaint based on the email “Anita Johnson”
sent to Sandy Downs, who forwarded it to me. With the complaint, I
included “Anita’s” entire email, including her entire email address. She
got very upset with me about this, and said she would never again offer
anything up about the Sheriff’s Office. She said I had put her and her
family at risk to the Sheriff Office, because they had ways of tracing
her “fictitious” email name back to her real person. She said enough to
indicate that she works for MSCO and has much she could say and probably
prove, but she made it very clear that she was not willing to do that. I
told her there was very little I, or anyone, could do, if people like
her, who had the evidence, would not come forward with it.
My
email dialogue with Jon Ellsworth, of Internal Affairs was even more
disturbing. I learned that he took Capt. Chad Scibilia’s word for
everything. I learned that no attempt was made, despite my repeated
prodding, to contact “Anita Johnson” by email and offer her
whistleblower status and protection, and invite her to come forward with
her evidence and submit to polygraph over it. I learned that since 2000,
the Sheriff Office has done around 750 polygraphs, mostly for employment
applications, some for criminal investigations. I learned that Capt.
Scibilia did about 200 of those investigations and that he did the
polygraph on Bill Becker and Bernie Stump, after they were asked by the
Sheriff Office if they would submit to polygraph. Bill Becker told me
this himself, and that they both passed the polygraph and were cleared
of any involvement in Tom Stump’s still unresolved disappearance.
I also was told that the
contract the Sheriff Office has with the Police Benevolent Union
prohibits the use of polygraph in Internal Affairs investigations and,
by Sheirff Roth’s interpretation, with any permanent Sheriff Office
employees. When a prominent Key West attorney told me yesterday that
this was because polygraph is unreliable, I retorted that the Sheriff
Office did not think polygraph was unreliable in screening employment
applicants and clearing people suspected of involvement in crimes. They
can’t have it both ways, I said. Yet that is exactly what the Sheriff
Office and the Police So-called Benevolent Union are doing. They have no
objection to the Sheriff Office spending money and officer time
conducting polygraph examinations, as long as such are not performed on
law enforcement officers, who ought to be the very first to be
polygraph-examined, if anyone one is so examined by the Sheriff Office.

Why does John McCain tell us 50 times every time he speaks he was
a P.O.W.? He drags it out every day. If he cannot get beyond a personal
challenge he faced he cannot lead this great country. I applaud his
service to country but to be a great leader you have to be able to get
beyond personal tragedy and quit living in the 60s. I don't feel he has
that ability. He would be a good cabinet appointment but he's not
equipped to be a President. you can't teach an old dog new tricks.
|
| [Fiscal Responsibility] Now
that the dust of the election primaries has settled, it is time to make it
clear to the candidates that the voters want fiscal responsibility as a
sound plan to encourage small commercial redevelopment. We need steamlined
permitting procedures (there's no need to show two thousand documents just
to be able to fix a door), They need to stop government empire building with
irresponsible projects without inadequate checks and controls in place. We
cannot afford it. Adding skyscrapers to the airports are not good ways to
raise more revenue for the County. |
|
[Another
broken promise by the county]
Where are my night time shades? The new Big Pine Key
Park sure does have bright lights for the tennis courts. The promise
made by the county has once more been a lot of hot political BS. The
neighbor meetings 2/3 years ago confirmed we could have a 25' berm and
shaded lights. The park in Key Largo has the type of lights that have
side shades that directs the light on the playing area and not the
neighborhood. The lights on the baseball field at Sugarloaf School have
shades too. Why at the school, are there are no homes close by? I suspect
they keep the lights from blinding drivers on US1--a good idea.
Why do the citizens in Big Pine deserve less? Please change the lights
before little league baseball starts next spring.
|
| Every one
should cheer the demise of economic and political corruption within the
county government! Beware, though, we still have to November to make it
right. There
are two other sections of our county government that need change as well:
The Mosquito control board and the School district. These both have had
runaway budgets.
The mosquito control board has passed by with out notice until they built
the Taj Majal hangar in Marathon. They have built quite the empire without
much fanfare or criticism. They have to be reeled in before they continue to
tax and spend at their will.
The school board, well if you have been reading and or watching the battle
between the tax cutting school board versus the tax raising superintendent,
t has become fierce. The new budget has gone from 2008's over $94 million to
a school board proposed budjet of 2009 $88 million. Acevedo then tried to
balloon the budget back over $91million. After Tuesday’s overthrow of two of
the gang of three the school board has gotten the message and now reeled the
budget back to $88 million with the caveat that it be eventually be brought
to a saner $80million.
In the last four years we have seen a school district administration grow
and grow. Many of these positions appear to be political. This means that
loyalist employees get big bucks to toe the party line. Recently slight of
hand budgeting has also appeared with the long due retirements of loyalist
top level management. Then Mr Acevedo had the insane notion of rehiring
certain individuals as "consultants" at $60k a year.
Watch out for the whining cry of "It’s for the children". This is the guilt
lever when the issue of cost cutting to education rises up. If the public
schools were required to show a profit you can bet things would run as good
as corporate oil. Let’s see, $94 million divided by 8000 students equals
$11,750 a child. Wow, rich people’s schools are cheaper. Remember there are
viable candidates out there. Hmmm, maybe I should go into teaching, retire
and become a millionaire. It beats commercial fishing! |
[Poor
struggle as rat meat prices soar] The price of rat meat has
quadrupled in Cambodia this year as inflation puts other meat beyond the
reach of poor people, officials say. With consumer price inflation at 37 per
cent according to the latest central bank estimate, demand has pushed a
kilogram of rat meat up to around 5,000 riel ($1.48).
Spicy field rat dishes with garlic thrown in have
become particularly popular at a time when beef costs 20,000 riel a
kilogram. Officials say rats are fleeing to higher ground from flooded areas
of the lower Mekong Delta, making it easier for villagers to catch them.
"Many children are happy making some money from selling the animals to the
markets, but they keep some for their family," Ly Marong, an agriculture
official said. "Not only are our poor eating it, but there is also demand
from Vietnamese living on the border with us."
He estimates that Cambodia supplies more than a ton
of live rats a day to Vietnam. Rats are also eaten widely in Thailand, while
a state government in eastern India this month encouraged its people to eat
rats in an effort to battle soaring food prices and save grain stocks.
Now, if we could only make this trendy in NYC it
would solve a lot of problems. |
|
Now that the new community park on Big Pine Key
is complete, I think they should do a revision and add a community pool and
a nice size tiki hut with benches along the water so folks can sit
and relax enjoying the view; also a much needed boat ramp that the community
and FWC officers could use. The police presence might deter the wannabe
thugs. There is more then enough open space along the water and all that
grass is going to be a nightmare to maintain anyway. Just wait and see. |

[Guns] I was shopping in New Orleans to get some supplies before the

I
am a child of the fifties, a man of the South. I grew up hearing and
saying every slang word for a black man in the book, and a few that I even

Wow, how wrong can a person be?

expecting them to pay the loan. Does this person know what co-sign means?
He should be pissed at his bum friend who stuck him with a loan. Didn't he
see something was wrong when his friend couldn't get a loan on his own?
Keys Federal has to be the easiest bank there is to get a loan from. If the
friend needed a co-signer the friend was obviously a risk. The person who
co-signed gambled and lost; now he's mad at the bank. For those wondering,
I don't work for Keys Federal nor do I even bank there; I just read that
post and think the co-signer is an idiot. Something good did come from this
though. You'll have a lot of alone time as you walk to work to think about
why you shouldn't co-sign for someone with bad credit. |

Dr.
Doug saw an iguana ride up to shore on some branches, and so iguanas
belong here, and Dr. Doug is an expert, and bla, bla,". Iguanas have been
artificially introduced here by the hundreds through pet stores (people buy
them, get sick of them and release them) since the '60s and 70's. The iguana
is an invasive exotic, meeting all the criteria that define the
term. The iguana man was one of the first idiots who let them breed and go
loose. He inadvertently encouraged many other morons who wanted to create a
"colorful" persona because they were such vacuous wretches themselves. "Hey,
look at how kewl I am with my reptile friends, hey, I'm a
personality!" And so now we have to deal with them, just like the rest of
the scourges man unleashes on himself.
So cut the native iguana BS, you sound like a damn fool. Rats have
naturalized here, the common brown rat, or Norway rat has been here since
the first ships that have wrecked off the coast, and their numbers have
never soared to rival the iguana. Does that mean I have to put up with them
in my attic? Or shitting all over my house and yard? Hell, give me the rats
over the iguanas. How about maybe we should put up with piranhas in the
fresh water ponds, or walking catfish, or Anacondas, and Brown Tree Snakes
or zebra mussels. Hey, I know, cats are a distant relative to the Florida
Panther, how's about we let them breed until the air is redolent with urine?
I have no problem discouraging cruelty towards helpless animals, but do you
understand that folks are not going to put up with an animal in the
quantities that exist today? Crawling up their porches, inside their houses,
their pools, and decks and boats, and all the while defecating as they
regard the residents with a baleful glare? Any animal has the right to
protect their own nest from invading pests under penalty of death.
So regardless of your fatuous, supercilious lectures, even you will take
measures, as nature intended, to protect your home and property from
shitting interlopers. It's just a matter of time and numbers until you’ll
act. |

| Russia has invaded Georgia
and as of Thursday, has refused to leave. In fact Russia is making ominous
noises that sound disturbingly like a rattlesnake over the Georgia issue and
about several other new Democracies that used to be part of the USSR.
Russia has threatened military action against Poland. 63% of Americans are
ready to support an Israeli military strike against Iran if diplomacy fails.
Iran keeps threatening Israel and keeps developing its nuke capability. The
west has just told Russia to keep out of the Ukraine. Militant Muslim
fanaticism is growing like weeds in Europe.
Do we have a lot to worry about, should we have some
measure of good solid healthy fear? In view of the lack of qualifications
of the Democrat candidate for President, I damn sure think so. I fully
agreed with Joe Biden when a few months ago he said Obama wasn’t qualified
to be President. I think that his quote was “the Presidency is no place for
on the job training.” It’s worth noting that Biden and Hillary both said
that Obama wasn’t qualified and both said that McCain was. Aside from
becoming glitterati, what special training or character development has
Obama had since then? I’m deeply concerned about the future of our nation, I
sure hope that every reader of this site is too. If we pick the wrong
candidate we’re screwed. |

[Lake Okeechobee]
That's how the Army Corps screwed it up the last time, draining off to much
water in preparation for a hurricane that never came. |
Florida Keys “Homevoters” turned two Monroe County Commissioners out of
office in this week's primary, and retained one who should have been
relieved of duty. Sonny McCoy and Dixie Spehar, two of three Commissioners
who had been voting as a block recently to return some sort of common sense
to the Keys, were defeated rather decisively. Ms. Spehar was drubbed by
tree-hugger Kim Wigington, 67.0% to 30.6% (2.4% abstaining). Sonny McCoy
didn't do much better, losing to Carlos Rojas by 59.9% to 37.1% (3.0%
abstaining). Commissar Sylvia Murphy -- who has never seen a piece of vacant
property that should be used for anything other than conservation, kept her
seat by defeating Sewer Board Chairman Gary Bauman by a mere 55.7% to 40.2%
(4.1% abstained). Ouch!
All three Commissars face opposition in the November general election,
Monroe County Commissioners have all run as Republicans for years, but Keys'
"Republicans" are all over the political spectrum from left of Barack Obama
to right of Attila the Hun. The three challengers, a Democrat challenging
Mr. Rojas and two "no-party-affiliated" candidates, challenging Ms. Murphy
and Ms. Wigington are not likely to prevail in November.
It is fair to say that, come November, we will see the County shift back to
a "steal the land and damn the torpedoes (i.e., lawsuits), full speed
ahead" mentality. This go-around, the new Commissars will have a plethora of
pleadings on their plate. And Monroe County will no longer be able to waste
millions of taxpayers' dollars on outside counsel (at rates as high as
$750/hour). |

It was only a month or so ago, as I recall, that
our illustrious Mayor said that if "his people" weren't re-elected
he'd quit. So now that his people, Sonny and Dixie, have lost their
primaries we will get to see if Mr. Mayor is really a man of his word?
Anybody taking bets?
Sonny and Dixie -- what kind of names are those for
grown up people anyway? Wasn't that a cartoon show in the '60s?

Is
there anything we can do about the ongoing carnage that
anglers and spear fishermen are doing at Snapper Ledge off
Tavernier? I ask because it is an absolute gem of a reef, the
fishiest reef in the whole Florida Keys, I think. But it is open for
any and all to take fish there. There is only one mooring buoy and
I've seen it occupied by boats teaching spear fishing classes, and
more disturbing is what is being done to the nurse sharks there.
I don't dive this spot all that often, mostly
just during my photo classes, but now on three separate occasions
I've found nurse sharks alive on the bottom, but just barely. They'd
been speared for "sport" and left to die. It took them several days
to finally die, but sure enough, we found them later in the week
dead on the reef.
The past week it was even more outrageous. I
found a nurse shark curiously lethargic on the bottom on a Sunday.
He had been stabbed through the head, and eviscerated. I looked at
his belly and the entrails were hanging out. He was alive but
nothing anyone could do to help that poor guy. Someone probably
caught him, stabbed him, gaffed or sliced him, and threw him back in
to die.
I had 16 photo students with me to witness
this barbaric travesty on a Sunday, and they then were with me four
days later to find the white and lifeless corpse on the bottom,
tucked in next to the majestic schools of grunt and snapper we were
there to celebrate. I have photos of the whole series, including the
vibrant shark who became detritus on the sea floor by the act of
some ignorant or malicious person. It was pretty outrageous, really.
I recommend this marquee dive site be
protected as a Sanctuary Preservation Area, SPA, just like Molasses
Reef is protected. There are plenty of other places to spear fish
off Tavernier and Islamorada. We're only talking about a few hundred
square meters that need protection because clearly, left to their
own devices, uncaring and uneducated cretins are decimating the
marine life there for no good reason.

[Visit
the Keys] The keys are divided into two imaginary areas, the upper keys
and the lower Keys. The upper Keys are like Miami with trees. The lower Keys
are the cool keys. Key West (Key Weird) is the fun spot with the characters
and live music. The Green Parrot is the best bar. Hotel rooms start at $200.
The rest of the keys all look alike. The further away you get from KW the
more conservative it gets. No matter where you go in the lower keys you
always get a nice mix of locals and tourists. There’s a lot to do in KW, but
not in the rest of the keys. Big Pine is 30 miles from KW and we have the
Key Deer refuge here. You can see these little critters all over the place,
but that’s about the only excitement around here. Up here we’re more laid
back. It’s a mix of retirees and blue collar workers. There is no industry
in the keys other than tourism and commercial fishing.
I’d suggest staying in KW and
walking around. It’s a great place to walk. There’s lots of cool plants and
great old architecture and beautiful water too see. Rent a car and drive to
Marathon (mile marker 50) over the 7 Mile Bridge, have lunch and drive back
down to Big Pine Key (mm30) and see the key deer and visit the Blue Hole and
see an alligator and some other nice critters, then go drive back to KW.
It’s one of the most beautiful drives in the country. You have water on both
sides much of the way and you can see the hundreds of offshore mangrove
islands from your car. There’s only one road in the whole keys and it's
connected with about 28 bridges. You can’t get lost. |

Do you really think any candidate
could do worse than Bush/McCain? Try to separate the Swift Boat
conspirators and very professional hate mongers who are spreading falsehood
and exaggerations about Obama. They are very good at it, because they know
they will not be held accountable. |
From
time to time since before I entered the Key West mayor’s race last year,
I have written that people running for office have no right to
privacy, and I have warned in what I wrote that no stones will be
left unturned. This is how it should be, because candidates for office
need to be transparent before the people they seek to represent.
Otherwise, voters do not really know the candidates and do not know who
they are choosing to represent them.
What brought all of this to a head for Sandy was
Keys Energy Service’s trial attorneys in the lawsuit filed against Keys
Energy and other defendants by the Personal Representative of Sandy’s
deceased son, Preston Hartman. Preston was one of five children Sandy
had by Robert Hartman, four, or maybe five of them through natural
childbirth, Sandy told me, because she wanted to see what God really
wanted her to experience on this world. The rough divorce from Bob
fourteen years ago, with five young children on her hands, along with
little help from Bob and very little money in her pockets, and all the
other vicissitudes of life, produced the psychological report. What Keys
Energy’s lawyers want with it I cannot imagine. Sandy was not present
when Preston was electrocuted on a jobsite where his stepfather, Nick
Downs, and his older brother were working in Key West. I can see no
probative value whatsoever for Keys Energy’s lawyer requesting the
report. The only reason I can see for it was Keys Energy’s lawyers
wanted to try to intimidate Sandy into settling the case cheap against
Keys Energy, by threatening to make the report part of a public record.
As if Keys energy has any real exposure. By law, as a public utility,
Keys Energy can only be liable for $100,000, and I imagine that is
covered by private or self insurance. I can not imagine what Sandy’s
psychological report would have looked like if she had been examined
after Preston was killed. Now that report would have had
bearing on her pain and suffering, while the report Keys Energy has now
obtained has no bearing whatsoever...

[Fear Sells] I agree that McCain should minimize
his retelling of his POW agony, but the facts of the story do tell us a lot
about the man McCain and how life experiences shaped him. Those life
experiences are in sharp contrast to his opponent whose public service
resume is paper thin and whose choice of friends, backers, confidants,
associates, and mentors are abysmal. The fact that he purposefully embraces
those persons speaks volumes about the man Obama and his judgment.
We’re heading into a time of great danger, Russia has
all but declared war on us, The Muslim population abroad is burgeoning as is
the Muslim fundamentalist jihad movement. It’s only our existing aggressive
actions against them that has kept us safe in our homes. You can bet your
beer money that our new President will be faced with aggressive actions by
our enemies soon after his inauguration. No one can doubt that Obama’s
first reaction will be to accede to their demands, appease and try to get
our enemies to hold hands and sing Kum Bay Yah with us. He will be welcomed
by the aggressors just as Neville Chamberlin was welcomed by Hitler.
Chamberlin's appeasement emboldened Hitler, and he started World War 2.
It’s really ironic that our ally, the democratic nation of Poland is at
deadly risk again. Remember, it’s Obama, not Biden who would be calling the
shots. Our enemies look on Obama as a latter day Carter. |
After
years of tinkering, rearranging, adjusting settings, even having Geek Squad
out I finally have a clear wireless signal. The fix was to move one
cordless phone's battery charge cradle over about 4 feet and plug it into a
different circuit. That also cleared up the am radio signal in the house. I
don't know whether to feel like a genius for figuring it out or an idiot for
taking so long. |
|
Obama must have considered that choosing Hillary would have virtually
guaranteed him 18 million of her voters, and would have probably ensured him
the Presidency. An Obama and Hillary ticket would have been a nearly sure
bet to win the Presidency. Nonetheless, Obama’s flawed judgment resulted in
the choice of Biden. |

Sonny's gone! Dixie's Gone! Hearing footsteps yet, Mario? |
I'm so proud of the majority of our citizens
for voting out the Bubba's. I'm looking forward to more Bubba's leaving
in November, especially the police corruption. When you call Crime
Stoppers, your leads are "investigated" by criminals who wear gold stars
and the select few are on the drug dealers' payrolls and also are in
charge of the Bubba Polygraphs. Let's
continue to vote out the rest of the bad guys regardless if they share
our party affiliation. Our new DEA Sheriff will hopefully polygraph
(with a new company) the good old boys and clear out their little club.
Why do we tolerate such blatant abuse of power and corruption? It seems
like every little pocket of Monroe County is corrupt. I did not vote for
Mayor Mario and neither did anyone else. I want him removed from power.
We absolutely need a Citizens Review Board and many more community crime
watches since there is power in a group. Unfortunately there is no
Serpico in our county and the honest police just shut their mouths,
which is probably a gigantic conflict of interest, since many wanted to
do the right thing.
If we want to make crime tips, we would be
better served reporting them to DEA who are effective in arresting
career criminals who are not only poor black crack heads.

| [Character]
It’s important to closely consider every presidential candidates record and
his judgment. Those factors will provide you with some insight as to how
the candidate will perform as President. The old bromide “the past is
prologue” is absolutely true. But should we consider each candidates
character? Is it even fair to judge another person’s character? Yes, most
certainly, we do every day. I hope that we can agree that “character” is
sum of our thought processes and how those processes are affected by the
ethical traits that individually define us. These traits shape our view of
life and how we deal with our world. Character is a sub set of honesty,
truthfulness, and personality. It manages how we deal with difficult or
vexing problems. Character is difficult to define, but we know it when we
see it. We all know persons who we just don’t trust, not for any specific
reason, but just “because”. That distrust is engendered by our doubt of that
individual’s character. Aren’t we all less inclined to trust in someone who
purposefully misleads, or purposefully lies? Aren’t we less inclined to
place our trust in an individual who routinelly practices hypocricy? We are
less inclined to place our trust in anyone who places his own well being
above the truth or above the general good. We are less inclined to place
our trust in persons who we know to change their beliefs to suit the
situation. We are less inclined to place our trust in persons who
purposefully flaunt the rules or the law. I believe that we can gain strong
and accurate insights in each candidate’s character by examining his
history, his actions, his choice of causes, his choice of associates, and
whether or not he has the courage of his claimed convictions. In my view a
candidates "character" is the single most important criteria in choosing a
president. |
At
last the taxpayers of Monroe County can breathe a bit easier knowing that
Dixie and Sonny have been shown the door in no uncertain terms. What we now
have to worry about is how much damage they will do with the help of
Mario between now and January when they are finally out of office. We
shouldn't be surprised to see some nasty, vindictive shenanigans as they try
to shove their self-serving and pro-big money developer agendas up the
backsides of the voters as a last hurrah. |

[Since iguanas don't seem to be native to our Keys] Sorry to
disappoint you, but, as someone else pointed out, Dr. Mader and others, that
I have talked to, from the university in Miami, are doing research on the
origin of the iguanas in the Keys, and so far, their research points to the

Looking
like giant leaves floating in the sea thousands of Golden Rays are seen here
gathering off the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico. The
spectacular scene was captured as the magnificent creatures made one of
their biannual mass migrations to more agreeable waters. Measuring up to 7
ft (2.1 meters) from wing-tip to wing-tip, Golden Rays are also more
prosaically known as Cow Nose Rays. They have long, pointed pectoral fins
that separate into two lobes in front of their high-domed heads and give
them a cow-like appearance. Despite having poisonous stingers, they are
known to be shy and non-threatening when in large schools. The population
in the Gulf of Mexico migrates, in schools of as many as 10,000. |

"Ding
Dong the which is dead." That's the song the Keys are singing this
morning with the defeat yesterday of Commissioner Dixie Spehar. The end
of the Gang of Three is here! Let's see how much more damage she can do
until January. I remember years ago when Harry (I can't remember
his last name, but he was the one with the bomb who held off the police
at Perry Court) defeated Martha (I can't remember her last name either)
because City commissioner Martha sold out the City to Austin Labor and
approved his development of the Reach Hotel in return for screwing her
(literally). Well, anyway, when Harry found out he won, he was going
around singing the song from the Wizard of Oz. When Martha's son's heard
him they tried to get him and beat him up. Harry had to go on the radio
an apologize for the tune. |
|
"Another one bites the dust." Sonny McCoy's
political career is finally over. We can all breath a sigh of relief.
The last of the great bubbas has been soundly beaten. The gang of three
is no more (after January). Control of the County will now be returned
to the people. I don't have anything good to say about the man so I stop
here or my email will be added to this most happy post. |
|

That smoke you might be smelling is not you house, hopefully, it’s the

[Sore Loser] Sonny McCoy would not even
shake the hand of Carlos Rojas who beat him in yesterday's primary. What
a sore loser. I'm glad he's gone. My only worry is how will Sonny try to
screw the citizens until he leaves office? |

[Stop Foreign Aid] the
world sends billions of dollars every year to Africa and other third
world countries. How much of that money ever reaches the people? Not
much, I can tell you. Most is siphoned off by the government and
administrators. The biggest problem of all is that when the aid money
runs out the people are back just where they started. A better idea is
to teach the people to help themselves by giving them small sums of
money. The trick is to by-pass the government.
Paul
Polak, a social entrepreneur, from Colorado does just that. A recent
example of his method is, through his foundation the Intl Development
Enterprise, he gave a farmer $26 to buy a 250-square-meter drip
irrigation kit. He worked hard learning farming and he made $256 in one
season, He usually makes between $50-100 a year. He went from his first
tiny plot to a whole acre of irrigated produce. He then bought a buffalo
and made almost $700 selling its milk. He now owns goats too.
By this method he can get as big as he wants. All
he needed was money to get started. He didn’t need bags of meal donated
by relief agencies. That meal might feed him, but it does nothing for
tomorrow! He needed the means to make a living. In countries like his
where they make a dollar a day, it doesn’t take very much money to get
them out of poverty.
Mr Polak says the people can’t borrow because they
have no collateral. They own their homes, but the homes are just mud and
wattle and worthless. He says that by giving them $100 they can build
skeletal (20 square meter) house of eight beams and a good roof. Later
they can add bricks and other improvements. Then they can go to the bank
and borrow against it.
This is the way aid should be distributed. Flat out
gifts are only temporary. Give a man a fish and he’ll hold a barbecue
for his family, but teach him how to fish and he’ll have a lot of
barbecues for the whole village…or something like that. |

So long Dixie! We ain't gonna miss you. |
|
After watching the Democratic
convention yesterday it really confirmed my worst fears. I can't and
won't vote for a candidate for president this year. I will have
to, and will vote against a candidate for president this year! |

[Gang of Three] Question? What do the developers of Lucky's
Landing and the story of the "Three Little Pigs" have in common?
Answer: three little pigs. |
|
I've been gone from Big Pine for a week, has
Walgreens opened yet? If God meant for us to vote he'd have given us a
choice. |
Our
Democrat friends are begging you to believe that only they can “rescue”
our economy. They propose to this by raising taxes. That means taking
money away from you and giving it to government. The Democrats want to
grow government by about 23%. That will cost big, big, bucks. It will
require even more taxes, even more money taken away from you. They
refuse to tell us how taking money away from you will make you prosper!
Do you wonder how well Democrat economic practices have worked? The
answer is not so hot: of the five most poverty ridden states, four
suffer Democrat governance. |

[Sewer Alternative] Be
advised, these so called alternative poop processors cost big dollars in
the range of $20,000 and up, plus maintenance. The only way is large
processing plants geared to take care of a given area's output. Can you
imagine a large city (Monroe County is just like that) having each
property having its own plant--ridicules! We have to get people in
office that know what they are doing, not sitting in those big leather
chairs playing with their bank books! |
Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
County Commissioner George Neugent summed it up very well last night
on the Comcast/US1 Radio broadcast, when he said voters wanted a
change because they didn’t want the County Commission to be run in
the way it has been run since the Gang of Three came into being.
Toward the end of last night’s broadcast, George finally told the
audience what he had been sitting on for a long time: how the Gang
of Three came into being.
It went back a few
years to when the County Commission was considering the Duck Key
wastewater treatment plan, and Count Commissioner Sonny McCoy leaned
over to George during that meeting and said George’s position was
correct but Ken Sorensen had told Sonny he wanted it to go the way
George opposed, and he, Sonny, was going to vote in favor of it. In
that moment, George told the audience last night, the Gang of
Three came into being. He told me this same story maybe three weeks
ago, but I never felt moved to write about it, and maybe it’s best
that I didn’t. Maybe it’s best that it came straight from the
horse’s mouth on the night of this truly important shift in our
County government, which many dedicated Keys people worked very,
very hard to bring about.
Perhaps the Duck Key
story was a harbinger for what, now, is the most important task
facing Keys people and their government leaders: modern
countywide sewerage treatment and disposal. At candidate forums
leading up to last night, in candidate questionnaires put to me by
various civic and professional groups, I said the first order of
business was to remove the Gang of Three, and then the first order
of business would be to stop killing the ocean and reef. We now must
turn our full attention and effort in that direction, and apply all
of our energy and resources to getting it done. We must not let
anything ever again take precedence. This has nothing to do with the
Keys being declared an Area of Critical State Concern. It has to do
with doing what is right.

Regarding the story of the

Its
getting old, John! John McCain mentioned the fact again that he was
a POW when addressing the "how many homes do you have" issue. He said
that "I lived in a cell for 5 years I did without". Please quit
reminding me every day, John, that you were a prisoner. It's starting to
sound like you are using that as an excuse for everything and we do not
need a person in office that cannot move on after a tragic experience.
It is clouding your thoughts and I applaud your service to country, but
it's rehashing the same fact over and over and over. I lost a lot of
relatives and have seen things during my time in service that I do not
discuss much but I haved learned that until you come to terms with the
things you have seen and the things you have done under orders you
cannot go on with an open mind.
I don't feel McCain has the mental strength to lead this country. I
feel that Joe Biden, the head of the Foreign Relations Committee was an
excellent choice for the country. He has more first hand knowledge of
current affairs then McCain. I have been an independent for about 8
years I'm not a staunch Republican. |

The
Key West Airport was good enough as it was. Nobody comes here for
an airport. Maybe it needed a small addition with AC to accommodate the
new security situation. I flew in and out of there many times and never
gave the conditions a thought. And best of all, it was the supremely
best car parking situation of any airport I've been to. Just walk across
the driveway 50 feet to the open parking lot and you were in your car
and out the door. If you were picking up someone or dropping someone off
you just rolled up the driveway to the front door and did it, or put a
quarter in a meter in the parking lot if you had to wait a while. Ah,
progress. |

It’s true that Obama’s campaign has
banned contributions from registered lobbyist and he’s instructed
the DNC to follow suit. Obama’s publicity stunt policy won’t
preclude lobbyists bucks from finding his pockets because the policy
only applies to currently registered federal lobbyist. Bucks
coming from former lobbyists, unregistered lobbying firm partners,
wives of lobbyists, state lobbyist, or municipal lobbyist are being
gobbled up by the Obamaists. Now think about this. Obama, by
bragging about this stunt wants you to believe that lobbyists are
not to be trusted, and that their support is to be shunned. If Obama
really believes that why does he embrace the DNC’s vice chair,
Lottie Shackleford who is a registered federal lobbyist and has been
since at least 1999. She is a lobbyist for insurance firms State
Farm and Allstate as well as student lender Sallie Mae.
Shackleford’s clients have included Allstate Insurance, FM Policy
Focus, ARTEL, Hyundai Motor Co., Jacksonville Electric Authority,
Kyocera Corporation, Lyondel Chemical Company, Metro-Miami Action
Plan Trust, Miami-Dade [FL] County, NPR, Psychemedics Corporation,
Quest Software, Sallie Mae, SBC Communications, plus, she was was a
Registered Foreign Agent from September 1994 To December 1995.
Maybe even more important is that Obama doesn’t want you to know
that his single biggest class of contributors is
lawyers who give more than 3 times as much money to
Obama, who is a lawyer, as they do to McCain. What do you suppose
will happen to tort reform with an Obama presidency?

Whoa,
don't even mention Weight Watchers
and Nutrislim in the same
paragraph! Yes, Nutrislim provides your meals to you, which, in my
opinion, is not the way to lose weight.
With
Weight Watchers, you learn how to eat normal foods and still lose
weight. Their frozen dinners are only there for those times you
don't have time to prepare a meal, such as at work, etc. You don't
have to eat their frozen dinners, ever, if you don't want to.
Weight Watchers is one of the best ways to lose weight! I had tried
pretty much every diet there is out there, and this was the only one
that worked for me. I lost 75 pounds and have kept it off for 7
years.

Hey
you persons in your Ivory Towers! Are you so far removed that
you do not hear the voice of the country? More than 85% of the
citizenry want English as the official language. Then why was it
defeated on Capitol Hill? It is plain as the nose on your face, the
Government no longer represents the people. I believe I'm quoting
Thomas Jefferson who said "When a government no longer represents
the people, it is time for that government to be abolished."
The immigration policy is a disgrace, no
wonder that the Hispanics think that they will take the states of
the south west as their own. I too was an immigrant 40 years ago. I
had to report to the post office every January and report my
address. I had a sponsor who was responsible for me so I didn't go
on the welfare rolls. He had to make sure that I had a job, and
didn't collect unemployment. Why are the new immigrants allowed to
milk the taxpayers like a cash cow? What the hell happened to the
INS? The people in government are responsible. Hard earned money of
millions of heavily taxed citizens flows into the pockets of illegal
immigrants, who have to press one for English.

A
friend entered a question for me, but I really didn't give her
much information. Here goes! I'd like to visit the Keys and would
like to get a general idea of the area. Is each island distinct
enough that they all should be explored? Are there some where you just
stop for lunch and then move on? Some that are pricier than others?Where
does the average middle class person stay? Best dining? Good dining?
Best method of getting around? About me: female, traveling
alone. Healthy after a serious illness but still unable to participate
in many sporting activities (I'm working on it) I can do boat rides,
beaches, hang out in interesting places where interesting people
(characters) hang. I can have a drink or two per day and enjoy bars with
live music. Best time of the year to visit? Is a week long enough? Not
looking for a relationship - just a great relaxing sightseeing vacation
with great scenery and casual living. I know this is asking for a lot,
but if you have some trustworthy links you can provide, I'd be grateful. |
Working
toward a career in the health industry can start as early as the
freshman year of high school for Monroe County students thanks to
Fishermen’s Hospital Board of Trustees Charitable Giving. They sponsored
the Health Career Teacher Lori Denny at Marathon High School for $22,000
for the 2008-2009 school year. “When our high school students graduate
they can have a Health Career Certificate completed. With that, they are
accepted at better schools and are one step ahead in their life goals.
We’re thankful for Fisherman’s Board of Trustees’ support to help our
students fulfill their dreams,” said Superintendent Randy Acevedo.
Marathon High School offers three classes in health occupations. They
are Health Careers I, Health Careers II and Allied Assisting which
provides many basic skills necessary for entry into the medial field
such as disease control, vital signs, CPR, personal care, and basic
assessment skills. Students who complete both the health career classes
may not be required to repeat the core in postsecondary education. Also,
once HCI, HCII and Allied Assisting are completed, students meet the
minimum vocational credits in one vocational program required for the
Florida Bright Futures Gold Seal Vocational Scholars Award. Marathon
High School Principal Harry Russell said, “In these difficult economic
times we are looking for short-term creative ways to fund positions and
keep our programs. I am deeply grateful of this support.” For

[Wonderful
Park] I agree with the writer that I also wondered why the Grand
Opening of the new park on Big Pine Key was not advertised before
the grand opening. I can only surmise that locals were not invited
because this was an adult political event for back slapping, taking
credit, and campaigning for Tuesday's primary.
I am grateful that BPK got a park
ten-years late, but the grand opening would have been a nice family
event and on the weekend so working parents could bring their
children to celebrate the park. Remember, this park is about our
children! Where are the benches close to the water for those who
want quiet, peaceful reflections. And a park built right on the
water with no beach sand and swimming opportunity. Somehow great
opportunities were missed in planning this park.

The
"Charming airport" in Key West is the crappiest airport I've
ever seen. Over 30 years as a traveling business person, I have
visited many national and international airports and Key West is by
far the worst airport I've ever seen. It is a shame that tourists
spend big bucks to come to the Florida Keys and this is there first
impression of Key West. Poor design, no maintenance and repair,
dirty, needs painting and updating, no public art, looks like it has
been abandon for years. It is a shame! I have my family and
friends fly into Marathon, Miami, or Fort Lauderdale. I'll be happy
when the new airport is finished. I also agree with the person who
said get the radical, rabid
environmentalists out of the government's business. I
have always been an environmentalist myself, but only in the Florida
Keys have they gone to way over the limit and it it time to stop
them from destroying private property rights and businesses.
For example, at Wednesday's BOCC
meeting, I heard that the FAA required a green area around the Key
West runway for safety purposes. Without the green way the FAA could
close down the airport. Every airport in the United States must
comply with FAA rules and yet the local environmental group Last
Stand is suing the County about the greenway. What a waste of
taxpayers' money and a lack of respect for human life. The
environmentalists have already costs the County millions in lawsuits
over private property rights and now they want to stop tourism that
provides a critical economic engine for the Florida Keys. What
idiots. Thanks to Mayor Mario and other commissioners who are
finally listening to what the citizens want instead of caving in to
the few vocal environmentalists who wants to live in a third world
environment alone. Those who want to keep and get everyone else out
now so they can claim they saved the sensitive environment and
endangered species from development. As Rodney said, "Can't we all
get along? Both man and animals can co-exists - that has been
proven by science, but science didn't matter when the County adopted
the HCP for Big Pine Key and No Name Key that is "refuted by the
science" on which is was supposedly based. Isn't County staff and
legal counsel required to read land use regulations before
recommending it to the Board?
It is not "charming" that taxpayers
had to pay for a lawsuit by Last Stand against the County to get
Walgreens on Big Pine Key. The American way is for free open market
and price competition. Let the market decide who stays in business
as the County should not protect one national chain over another.
When can we have another grocery store choice? Without choice, many
of us travel to the mainline once a month to stock up where the
prices are better and we have freedom to chose where we shop.
Likewise, I'm amazed what some people
call "charming." Restaurants that would be closed down by the health
department if they were any where else in the state: dirty,
one bathroom, foul kitchens, no improvements done in years. When I
have asked why businesses don't clean up and upgrade, I have been
frequently told they can't get county permits.
Don't get me started. I have had
enough of the "bubba system" and letting environmentalists tell me
what I can or cannot do with my property. If you want the tourist to
keep coming to the keys you better start updating your
infrastructures businesses, hotels, roadways, because the tourists
have many other "nice" coastal area to go in Florida. For the past
10 years, folks who visited with us in the keys have said "once is
enough, I won't be back." The main draw is our waters, but there is
a lot of water along the eastern coastline and I've repeatedly heard
the Florida keys is "too expensive for what you get," and "run down"
are more frequently the reply than "charming."

So
they're out soliciting volunteers for "Challenge Day". This
boondoggle soaks up funds from the county and from the school district
and it's nothing more than a crock. Amateur, untrained adults sit down
with kids and encourage them to bare their souls in front of others and
then cut them loose at the end of the day and go home feeling good about
themselves. Don't fool yourselves, it's the adults who feel all warm
and fuzzy and the kids who pay the price. I've seen it for some time
now and it's the mental health professionals who have to sweep up after
the do-gooders and help glue the kids back together. |
[The
reason Sloan left Texas] Hmmm, as far as I know
I never lived in Texas, so I can’t see how I ever left it. Right now
I live in Key West, which certainly is an alternate reality. Just
ask anyone who lives here.
Meanwhile,
here are missives from two prominent Key West women about an
alternate reality that needs to come to a screeching halt, and a
good place to start the screeching is at the polls today. ~Sloan

R-E-S-P-E-C-T
For the second time in a year, a
member of the public was escorted out of the BOCC meeting (though
this time it was after the meeting adjourned). And as has frequently
been the case, members of the public were spoken to with something
well beyond disrespect. From the dais came rude and inappropriate
remarks, the phrase “shut up,” and a tone of utter disdain.
It is incomprehensible to me that anyone
in a leadership position could be so disrespectful of the individuals
who elect them and who pay their salaries. Maybe it’s because I was
raised by a teacher who was retired Navy, but I just cannot tolerate
such rude antics, and I’m dismayed that the non-offending Commissioners
are reluctant to speak out against it.
As my dad
used to say (a quote attributed incorrectly, I think, to Voltaire), “I
disapprove of what you say but I defend to the death your right to say
it.” I believe it is the responsibility of elected officials to
respectfully listen to input from constituents, even when they don’t
like what they hear — or maybe especially when they don’t like what they
hear. The kind of language and remarks that routinely emanate from some
at the BOCC are undignified, outrageous, and, if they’d been made in my
dad’s classroom, would have been grounds for detention or a “private
talk” in the hallway.
It is often
difficult for private citizens to take the time and make the drive to
attend every meeting. Perhaps the BOCC should consider allowing folks
who attend a particular meeting to speak on the agenda item that brought
them there, even if the item is then tabled. Their remarks could be
cited the next time the item is discussed, or better yet, replayed from
a recording. That way, the public is heard and their time is not wasted.
And perhaps they should be treated with respect. More...

They dedicated the wonderful new park on Big Pine Friday and I
didn’t hear about it until I read about it Monday in the Citizen. How
come the County didn’t tell anyone it was dedicating the park last
Friday? I would have liked to have attended. It’s probably the only
thing this administration has done for all the people of the county. |

McCain was cleared of wrongdoing in
the Keating Five matter. John McCain admittedly used piss poor judgment
in his dealings with Keating. McCain was the sole Republican of the five
Senators that gained notoriety as the Keating five. The Senate ethics
committee specifically determined that Democrat Senators Cranston, DeConcini and Reigle had substantially and improperly interfered with
the Federal investigation of Lincoln Savings and loan. The Ethics
Committee determined that the Democrats were the bad guys. The ethics
investigation revealed that the
five legislators did meet with the investigators who were focusing on
Keating. At this meeting, McCain said, "One of our jobs as elected
officials is to help constituents in a proper fashion. ACC [American
Continental Corporation] is a big employer and important to the local
economy. I wouldn't want any special favors for them.... I don't want
any part of our conversation to be improper." If McCain intended to
interfere, it didn’t work. The Federal regulators did seize Keating’s
bank. At the conclusion of the Senate Ethics Committee hearings, they
determined that McCain’s involvement in the affair was minimal and did
not reach the level of requiring institutional action against
him....Senator McCain had violated no law of the United States nor any
specific Rule of the United States Senate. His offense was only
perceptual. Observers of the affair contend that McCain was included in
the investigation solely so that there would be at least one Republican
target. If fact, the Democrat, who was the special investigator during
the scandal, suggested to the Senate Ethics Committee that it not pursue
charges against McCain, saying "that there was no evidence against him."
The Vice Chairman of the Ethics Committee, Senator Rudman (R) agreed,
but the Chairman, Senator Howell (D) prevailed. McCain was not
“rebuked”, he was criticized, and he acknowledged his error in judgment
and apologized. |

[Sewer Alternative] Xerolet and Green
Utility Districts can deliver on the promise of protecting the
environment and preventing catastrophic sanitary sewer overflows. Xerolet
will never discharge untreated toilet waste into the environment.
Xerolet can provide individual onsite systems with centralized
monitoring and service through an organized private or publicly owned
utility. A Green Utility District
operates like a traditional utility but without the traditional
infrastructure that will fail and cause health problems. Even more,
now Xerolet International, LLC has financial partners that will provide
the funding to help entire communities replace septic tanks and failing
central sewer systems. Xerolet looks forward to demonstrating our
Eco-System to the public who must address the difficult financial,
political, and environmental challenges when under a mandate to remove
septic systems from their community or begin to have a compliant
discharge within certain dead lines from those septic systems. In any
situation Xerolet only discharges gray water into a sub-surface drain
field, at its best the discharge is treated with Ozone and UVC
light...seems that the Xerolet Eco-System is a better way to go. If your
community does not use Xerolet it is not recommended that you come in
contact with flood waters that may contain human waste spilled from
sewer plants or septic systems.

[Conventions

to watch when they spent days getting torqued at each other making
indecisive votes and throwing tantrums. I think it might be a little
more intense if they ditched the primary process and just all showed up
for the convention to duke it out. That might saves months of wear and

I can't
say I would go so far as a hanging, but as Americans we are giving
up way to much! If we went to another country, they would not change
their language for us!
33 Senators Voted Against English as
America's Official Language on June 6, 2007.
On Wed. 6 June 2007, Colonel Harry
Riley, USA, Ret. wrote:
Senators,
Your vote against an amendment to the immigration Bill 1348 to make
English America's official language is astounding. On D-Day, no
less, when we honor those that sacrificed in order to secure the
bedrock, character and principles of America, I can only surmise
your vote reflects a loyalty to illegal aliens.
I don't much care where you come from.
What your religion is. Whether you're black, white, or some other
color, male or female, Democrat, Republican or Independent, but I do
care when you are a United States Senator representing Citizens of
America and vote against English as the official language of the
United States
Your vote reflects betrayal. Political
surrender. Violates your Pledge of Allegiance. Dishonors historical
principle. Rejects patriotism. Borders on traitorous action and, in
my opinion, makes you unfit to serve as a United States Senator.
Impeachment, recall or other appropriate action is warranted, or
worse.
Four of you voting against English as America's Official Language
are Presidential candidates: Senator Biden, Senator Clinton, Senator
Dodd and Senator Obama.
Four Senators vying to lead America, but won't,
or don't, have the courage to cast a vote in favor of English as
America's Official Language when 91% of American citizens want
English officially designated as our language.

The drilling and 10 year to
market is propaganda for sure. There are wells all over this land
and oil banks stashing billions of gallons underground. One of the
problems are is that we sell our oil to other countries for printed dead
presidents. Greed and control are the culprits, not oil sources. The
shake up is the conversion to cheep energy like solar (almost free),
hydro power (almost free), Hydrogen power (infinitely recyclable) and
other lesser know sources. Nuclear power will kill us all, simply
because the waste is so toxic and there's no place to dump it.
The
Space Shuttle was designed to ferry the shit into the Sun, but that is
obviously too expensive and dangerous to do. Also there's that little
question of positive and negative energy in which if our nuke waste is
one and the Sun is another, well, poof! We are killing this planet with
oil by products, and ill handling of all the toxins we have developed
for the good of mankind. The only thing we should have developed is
bigger balls to stop the ridiculous over-breeding of humanity. Peasants
farts are what is really killing us all, just like dinosaur dung! |

Monroe county is
terribly mismanaged and bankrupt. Social services, all non-profit
organizations who provide needed services to the community are cut.
People have lost their homes in trailer parks to development. Whistle
blowers are fired, developers are catered to and us home owners and all
citizens will pay for this as they've increased our taxes.
This is not just the result of poor judgment, but cronyism, back room
deals, favors to friends all made possible by putting key people in key
positions to decide, vote and allow for corruption.
At
the last BOCC meeting, I stood up to speak against the reappointment of
Donna Windle to the planning board. I was clear why she should not be
reappointed (you can read what I said on website:
http://citizenajane.net ). After
speaking, Sonny McCoy relentlessly chastised me for my statements. I
disagreed with him and wanted to argue his statements. I was not allowed
to speak as Mario DiGennaro told me to keep quiet or else I would be
thrown out of the meeting.
I then reminded Mario that Sonny earlier made a sexist remark to Kay
Thacker which was inferred to myself and that if he could say those
things, then I should have the right to speak the truth.
Sonny had earlier in the meeting stated: "Kay watch where you put your
fingers". I was sitting next to Kay, am a lesbian and interpreted
exactly what Sonny's comment meant. Sonny was crude, unprofessional,
discriminatory and disgusting.
Immediately after Sonny made this comment, in the audience we gasped and
could not believe what was said. It was clearly heard, yet, Mario
continued the meeting ignoring the statement.
The agenda item addressing censuring commissioners came up and was
postponed till next meeting. I had sat there for twelve hours, signed
up to speak on the item and asked to read into the record what I wanted
to say because I didn't know if I could make the next meeting in Key
Largo. This has been done in the past, yet I was not allowed to speak
and again denied my rights.
As soon as the meeting was over, I went up to Mario and told him loud
and clear: "I will never speak to you again! You let Sonny McCoy slur
his sexual remarks in this meeting, yet, denied me the right to speak.".
Then as Sonny McCoy was yelling for me to "shut up", Mario told the
sheriff to escort me out of the room and I was thrown out even though
the meeting was officially over.
We are controlled, denied our freedom of speech, insulted, abused,
intimidated in order to silence us. I will be filing a complaint to the
Florida Ethics Commission and I will sit down with a civil attorney and
as I fight for my rights of freedom of speech, not to be sexually
harassed by a public official at a publicly broadcasted meeting, I fight
for everyone's rights and a better government in Monroe County. |

To the person who was voting for Manny for
judge because he knew of no one else. While I applaud you for voting
I must confess it is difficult to believe you are not aware of the
candidates running for circuit court judge. The local newspapers
have been filled with ads, profiles of the candidates and
endorsements. I find Manny to be a good candidate, however after
spending a fair amount of time perusing the papers and sifting
through the chaff of political-speak I have decided that Mary Vanden
Brook is the best candidate for the position of judge.
It is important who our judges are. They are
the keepers of what is fair and equitable - the stewards of
justice. I think Ms. Vanden Brook is the most qualified and best
able to serve the public in what will be mostly a family court
situation. Her experience clearly sets her apart from the others.
This does not mean they are not good people or attorneys it merely
indicates that when you weigh the plusses and minuses Mary Vanden
Brook comes out on top.
I hope you will take it from someone who has
spent time examining all the candidates for all the positions you
have on your ballot that I find Mary Vanden Brook the best candidate
for Judge. The Key West Citizen endorsed her candidacy.

I
think your findings are very interesting to say the least. I went to
Monroe County Clerk's Web site and entered both Spehar and McCarty
and I think she did hide the fact she had equity in her property at
the time of the bankruptcy. It appears the property was sold Sept 2005
for $685,000 to Robert Crider.
If I read the information right she had a 1st
mortgage for $228,000 and a 2nd for $50,000. It looks like she had a
bunch a equity she failed to disclose. I know she owed the IRS $38,000
that was paid back after the sale of the home and realtor fees or about
$47,900 at 7%, but that still leaves $321,050. I'm not sure if I'm
accurately reading this but it will be interesting to find someone who
can shed light on this information.
The owner of my company says when you hire someone

|
[Take back you government] Independents and
republicans it's up to you. Democrats can not vote in the Dixie vs
Kim Wigington race so it is up to the republicans and independents
to restore a county government that is for the people and by the people.
Please do you homework. Look at how Dixie has voted on issues over the
past few years. Look at what she has done for affordable housing
(supporting Jerry Coleman's $300 or $350/hour "advice", backing Donna
Windle (realtor and planning board member) and Ed Swift and his
overdevelopment interests. Don't believe me, read over past BOCC minutes
and talk with your neighbors and friends.
Kim Wigington is knowledgeable, intelligent and honest. She has been
involved in trying to make the county commission honest and work on the
behalf of its citizens for many years. I can not see that she has any
hidden agenda or any questionable ties to developers, attorneys,
planners or anyone. Please research Dixie and Kim for yourselves. Look
at whom they have received campaign funds from and then I very strongly
urge you to vote for Kim Wigington. |

[$26
a grape] In Japan, it is common for people to give each other fruit,
such as grapes, melons, or apples, as a sort of luxury gift, but every
so often it gets a little overboard. In Ishikawa Prefecture Japan, a
bunch of “Ruby Roman” grapes were auctioned and purchased by a
restaurant owner for a record high of 100,000 yen (around $910). The
bunch had about 35 grapes on it, costing around $26 per grape, and each
one was as big as a ping pong ball. And I thought WD was pricey. |

[Volunteers
Wanted] For the past eight years campus atmosphere and
student-to-student respect has been improved in Monroe County
through Challenge Day, which is sponsored by Monroe Youth Challenge
Program. “Adult volunteers working in tandem with peer facilitators
in small groups are what make the day safe, powerful, and so
amazing,” said MYCP Director Sunny Booker. Adult volunteers are
asked to register as soon as possible. The intense one-day Challenge
Days are designed to help youth break down walls of hatred, decrease
school violence, and reduce the number of incidents related to
bullying.
In individual student’s lives and in overall school safety on all
three Monroe County High Schools this high-energy day has made a
huge impact. It successfully addresses the issues of violence,
racism, teasing, stereotypes, tobacco, and alcohol and drug abuse
within the context of teen life.
Challenge Days are scheduled at Marathon High School Monday, Sept.
8; Key West High School Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Sept. 9 – 11;
and at Coral Shores High School Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 15-16.

[Great Moments in Capital Punishment]
Prosecutors in Portland, Ore., took the death penalty off the table for
Tremayne Durham in July, accepting a minimum-30-year prison term for an
"aggravated murder" over a business deal. Durham agreed to plead guilty
when prosecutors relented to his additional demand of two pig-out meals
(featuring KFC, Popeye's and Haagen Dazs right away, and pizza and
lasagna on the day the judge accepts the plea). Prosecutors said they
hated appearing to cater to the whims of a murderer, but eyeing the
expense of a long trial and lengthy appeals, as well as the turmoil for
the victim's family, they agreed. In August, the judge accepted the
deal. |

[Citizen Rights] I suppose wonders never
cease. I suppose I'm glad I missed it. Mayor Mario had a deputy sheriff
throw Diane Bureldsen out of the last County Commission. Actually, the
meeting had already been adjourned.
Here's what led up to Diane being ejected. I heard this from Kay
Thacker, who was there, from Key West Attorney Robert Cintron, who
watched the meeting online, from Diane Bureldsen, when she told it to
Bill Becker on US 1 Radio this week, and from Diane when she called me
after the radio interview.
It began when Diane spoke very strongly and critically against the
re-appointment of Donna Wendell, a realtor, to the County Planning
Board. Very strongly. Like Donna had a conflict of interest, like Donna
had never seen a development deal she didn't like, like Donna didn't
have the sharpest tool in the tool box, and so forth. Commissioner McCoy
blasted Diane for her remarks. Daine's objection from her seat was
slammed by Sonny and Mario, even though she had a right to respond after
being singled out from the Dias. Somewhere in here Sonny said from the
Dias to Kay, who was sitting beside Diane, to be careful where she put
her fingers. A clear reference to Diane being a lesbian.
The last item on the meeting agenda was Mario's motion to censure
Commissioner George Neugent over his publishing online, though his
county email address, photos of topless nude women from Hollywood films.
Mario moved to table the motion until a later meeting, because it was
late and everyone was tired. Diane objected from the floor to not being
allowed to speak to this item, because in the past, when an item was
tabled and passed over, the citizens who had come to the meeting were
allowed to speak to it for the record, because they might not be able to
attend the later meeting when it came up again.
After the meeting was adjourned , Diane walked over to Mario, who was
standing beside Sonny, and she told Mario never to speak to her again,
and she would never speak to him. She blasted him for standing there
doing nothing, while Sonny made sexual slurs toward her, a lesbian. Even
as Sonny kept criticizing her.
It was now, after the meeting was over, that Mario told the sheriff
deputy at the meeting to escort Diane out of the meeting room. After the
meeting was already over, Mario did this, and the deputy complied, as if
Mario was the Sheriff himself. What do I know? Maybe Mario thinks he is
the Sheriff. What do I know? Maybe Sheriff Roth tells his deputies to do
whatever Mario tells them to do. What do I know? Maybe Sheriff Roth and
his deputies never heard of the First Amendment, which they swore a
solemn oath to defend.
As did Mario, Sonny, and the other three county commissioners, when they
were sworn into office. And not one of them came to Diane's side. Not
one of them told the deputy to stand down. Not one of them.
The irony here is that Mario had every intention of publicly hanging
George Neugent for publishing online boob photos made in Hollywood.
The irony here is that Sonny McCoy drove his own aide, Celeste Bruno,
nearly out of her mind with his sexual advances when she worked for him,
and later, when she changed over to being Commissioner Dixie Spehar's
aide.
The irony here is that, instead of calling Mario and Sonny down, Dixie
acts as if she is their consort.
The irony here is that there are people in the Keys who actually want
Mario, Sonny and Dixie on the County Commission. More than want, they
have these three up on pedestals. They worship them, apparently.
Well, citizens of the Keys, you have a chance tomorrow to take Sonny and
Dixie off the County Commission.

I
guess I suddenly can find more reasons to like McCain. Neither
one of us knows exactly what our tax bill is, and neither one of us
knows exactly what our mortgage payment is. Neither one us is ashamed to
talk about it. Hells bells, I don't know what our insurance costs us. If
we have problems, my wife lets me know. McCain and I are both fortunate
to have a wife we love and trust who takes care of the nasty little
details for us. McCain and I worry about the big things like national
security. I just wish that my wife were as wealthy as Cindy McCain.
I’ll bet there are plenty more dudes just like me and McCain. On the
other hand I do know a empty suit like Obama when I see one. |

[Winn

they just kept up with stocking the regular items in the store much less

Over
the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa
Mulch to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled, and it
was advertised to keep cats away from their garden.
Their dog Calypso decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and
devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when
she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next
day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk, half way
through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.
Although the mulch had no warnings printed on the label, upon
further investigation on the company's website, this product is highly
toxic to dogs and cats. Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and
they claim that It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs
that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees
depending on each individual dog). 'However, 98% of all dogs won't eat
it.'
Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and
other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called
Theobromine which is in all chocolate. It is lethal to dogs and cats..
It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest
this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3
weeks. Just a word of caution, check what you are using in your gardens
and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.

A John McCain
sympathasizer wanted me to discuss McCain's record of public service.
Here are the facts: 1. McCain returned from Vietnam in March, 1973. He
had a wife, Carol, and three children, Douglas, Andrew, and Sidney. He
was the subject of a thirteen-page story in U. S. News & World Report
describing his life as a POW.
2. In 1976 he was assigned to be commanding officer of a training
squadron stationed in Florida. During this time, he admits to engaging
in a series of adulterous, extra-marital affairs.
3. In 1977 the Navy "appoints" him to serve as the Navy's liaison to
the U. S. Senate.
4. In 1979, six years after returning from Vietnam, he began an
extramarital affair with Cindy Lou Henson (his present wife), the only
child of a wealthy Phoenix, Arizona beer distributor.
5. In 1980 he sued his wife of 14 years, Carol, for divorce. Carol
didn't contest it and the divorce was final in April, 1980. He married
Cindy three weeks later.
6. He retired from the Navy April 1, 1981, and he and Cindy moved to
Phoenix where he announced plans to run for Congress.
7. Fighting charges that he was a "carpetbagger," McCain won a close
election over three other opponents. Using Cindy's money and substantial
contributions from financier Charles Keating, his extensive television
ads put him over the top.
8. McCain's biggest splash in Congress comes when he is implicated in
the "Keating Five" scandal. In 1987, the scandal was headline news
involving failure of savings and loans. Many people lost their life
savings when Charles Keating's Lincoln Savings and Loan went under.
9. By 1987, McCain had received $112,000 in political contributions
from Charles Keating and John and Cindy McCain had been flown on
Keating's plane to Keating's luxurious Cat Cay villa in the Bahamas nine
times. Wife Cindy and her father, Jim Hensley, had also invested
$359,000 in a Charles Keating shopping center.
10. As federal investigators moved in to audit Keating's Lincoln
Savings and decide whether it should be seized, McCain and four other
Congressmen, set up a private meeting with the investigators. The
investigation is stalled and nothing is done for two years.
11. In 1989, Lincoln Savings and Loan goes under. Taxpayers lost over
$2 billion dollars on the bailout. Keating went to jail. McCain and the
other four (the Keating Five) are under investigation.
12. In November, 1990, hearings are held by the United States Senate
Ethics Committee to decide what punishment, if any, to give the Keating
Five. McCain and the four others are the subject of a 23-day public
hearing into the charges against them. McCain goes public and blames the
four others for misleading him.
13. In the end, McCain receives a rebuke from the Senate Ethics
Committee. McCain said, "I was judged eventually, after three years, of
using poor judgment, and I agree with that assessment." McCain also said
at the time, "The appearance of it was wrong. It's a wrong appearance
when a group of senators appear in a meeting with a group of regulators
because it conveys the impression of undue and improper influence."
This is the guy, with these moral values, that the Republicans are
trying to put in the White House. |

Ken
Davis, who says he wants to be your sheriff, has launched a crusade for
jail reform in the Keys. He has done this to get votes. He has done it
without any understanding of the people who live in jails and prisons. I
know this, because I have a great deal of understanding of the people who
live behind bars, having once in my life had many of them as pen pals. That
came about as the result of a prison Chaplin, who had read one of my books,
inviting me to do a weekend workshop in his prison, which was a maximum
security prison.
I spent the weekend with what started out to be about twenty inmates, which
dwindled to three men by Sunday afternoon. Most of these men could have
picked me up and broken me in half like a twig, so much physically stronger
than me were they from working out. Yet what I had to say to them had them
shaking like Jell-o, backed up against the wall in the church chapel,
literally. To the point, as I said, that only three of them were there on
Sunday afternoon.
From that experience another book came, and when I was unable to sell the
1,000 copies I had self-published, I gave most of them to the Prison Library
Project in Clermont, California. This outfit gave books to inmates who wrote
in asking for something to read, sometimes specifying a topic that
interested them. I also gave the Library Project perhaps two thousand copies
of the self-published book that had gotten me the invitation to do the
prison workshop, and I gave the Library even more copies of later
self-published books. This is how I developed so many pen pals in prisons.
Ken Davis keeps saying at candidate forums that we have many people in our
jail who go there to get medical and mental health treatment, who go there
to take a vacation. Ken Davis is mistaken. I never met or dealt with one
inmate, nor did I hear someone described by any inmates, who went to jail or
prison on purpose. Not one. And not one of them wanted to be where they
were. Not one of them was happy or enjoying themselves. Not one.
I think before Ken says another word about jail reform, about cutting out
television and air conditioning in our local detention centers, about making
inmates repay the county for their incarceration, he needs to spend serious
time, like maybe a month, living in each of our detention centers. Then he
needs to spend maybe a week visiting Florida prisons and talking to prison
wardens. Then Ken needs to spend a month with Lynne Vantriglia, who heads up
our local Art Behind Bars program. Lynne’s program has a long waiting list
in the Key West Detention Center, and it has the lowest recidivism rate of
any inmate help program in Florida. Yet Lynne has to spend a great deal of
time scratching and begging for money for her program, when what she really
needs to be doing is spend her time in the Detention Center working with
inmates. More...

The
mantra of the political candidates, no matter what the office they run for
is, "I will save the taxpayer money". The one question I ask is, where and
when? The Florida Legislature doubled the Homestead Exception this year. But
the recent TRIM (Truth In Millage) notice mailed out by Monroe County has
a bottom line that you pay to the Tax Collector that will be greater than
last year’s. Point the fingers where you will. The nick name Moron County
begins to sound more realistic every day.
A crowning example is the
Sewer Fiascos going on up and down the county. Do we have one Sewer
Authority with one administration budget for the whole county? Not on your
life. There are at least four I know of. They are all fighting over
the same grant money or borrowing millions from State funding sources, that
we, the taxpayers, will be paying off for years to come in either case.
What are they doing with
these multi-millions of dollars? Buying obsolete 20th century technology?
Other counties are using 21st century technology that doesn't pump sewerage
down a deep injection well that eventually might surface somewhere else--on
our reefs or in our drinking water. If that waste water pumped in to those
wells is so pure, why are the costly deep wells necessary?
With 21st century technology
there are no deep injection wells. The sewerage is converted into
electricity, fertilizer and even drinking water--all of which are saleable
items. No, they would rather have the taxpayer pay fees for the privilege
instead of gaining revenue from the process. If that is not enough, then why
do we have multiple emergency services (fire and ambulance) departments each
with its own administration and staffs, which duplicates costs to the
taxpayer?
Think long and hard this
year before you mark your ballots for any level of government. Have you had
enough? |

another interview Biden was asked about running against McCain, i.e. who
would make the better President, Biden, Obama, or McCain. Biden responded:
“I would be honored to run with or against John McCain because I think the
country would be better off.” Now folks that ain’t negative, it’s just the
cold hard straight no spin truth right from Ole Joe Biden’s mouth. |

How refreshing to see people with
guts speak up for the walked-on locals who are being bullied around
by incompetent, unprofessional local business leaders. That seems more like
justified frustration than hate to me. When ignorance is at the helm, what
do we really expect? And if, as so many people have confidentially admitted
to me, so many employees or co-workers of a place are intimidated by their
unofficial bosses (because real management does not have, or want, a clue)
to such an extent that worker bees must kiss butt or fear losing their jobs
if they disagree with unreasonable abuses of authority, then
these pseudo-powerful may continue to get away with appalling, selfish
behavior that affects far more than their own lives.
Houses built on sand can only last so long. And people
whose main friends are their employees who are kissing up to them to
preserve their jobs aren't what I would call sincere friendships that will

Police said the man later admitted that there was crack cocaine in the

in the bag and impounded the truck.

Harry F Knight
has died. Harry was the tax collector forever until 2000. He
used to get his café con leche mornings at La Dichosa Bakery
on White Street. One morning standing in line behind him I excused
myself and said, “I feel I should know you because I write your name
on so many checks for all these years.” Harry smiled and shook my
hand. He was a nice guy. |

[A Plus Roofing] They did my roof. I was ready for the “roofers from
hell” but was real surprised when they showed up on time and did everything
they said they would. And the biggest thing I liked—they cleaned up after
themselves and didn’t leave a bunch of roofing nails and bits of felt paper
all over the yard. Another surprise, I wasn’t ready for was that they were
nice and polite! Yeah, I’d hire them again. |

I like the idea of dual purpose
helicopters for the reasons yesterday’s poster wrote. I’ve thought of
this before, but didn’t think people of the County would want to do anything
so progressive that could save big money. I’ve totally lost faith in this
County Government. I also agree with yesterday’s top post to recall Mayor Di
Gennaro for being out of touch with the people. The County is not his
personal fiefdom to do with as he pleases. Cheesh, a 19 storey hotel! |

Spehar's bankruptcy documents, possible
violation of us Federal bankruptcy laws, possibly hiding assets from the
Federal Trustee. A Brief Overview:
1. Spehar claims "no assets".
a) Spehar owned a home at 722 Prado Circle, Big Coppitt.
b) There was no way the creditors could have found it because
she used her alias of "McCarty"
2. Spehar lists her home address in the Bankruptcy Filing as 201 Front St.
Key West
a) That's Ed Swifts Business Address
b) Her address for her Home sale in Big Coppitt is listed as
6810 Front St, Stock Island -- That's Safe Harbor! What was Spehar trying to
hide from her creditors? Her payout from the sale of her home? That may be a
violation of the Federal Bankruptcy Laws. We are checking with the
bankruptcy trustee.
3. Jerry Coleman was the attorney of record for Spehar's home closing and
her personal business on September 2, 2005.
a) Coleman received a lucrative Consulting Contract with
Monroe County on July 1, 2005--that's the same day Spehar's bankruptcy was
discharged.
b) Spehar approved the contract. That is a violation of the
Conflict of Interest law.
To view all the original documents for Spehar's Bankruptcy, please go to
http://www.dumpdixie.com
As of 3:00 PM Friday, the Federal Bankrupt Trustee is requesting all
documentation regarding Spehar's sale and proceeds of the transaction. Stay
Tuned. |

I honestly believe that Un-Elected Mayor D thinks he is Moses and if
we vote back into office his 2 cronies he will part the Red Sea long enough
to bring in developers and build high enough to block out the sun. If we do
then we get and lose what we deserve. |

Has there ever been an angrier man running for office then John
McCain? How can a man that has 100 million dollars and so many houses he
cannot count them be so mad? He is not the average man on the street and his
comments prove he is out of touch with the average American. If you think 3
million dollars is middle income you are out there where the buses don’t
run. |

[Mario's
folly is a new casino followed by a hotel in every airport] You’re
right on target. Di Gennaro is historically on the side of the big
money developers in every instance. A reasonable scenario is to create
a crisis (spend the county into a financial bottomless pit with the help of
a couple of fellow commissioners and a willing administrator) then, in a
back room deal, engineer an agreement with some big money developers to
build a big, luxury hotel in Key West (that just so happens to have a huge
lobby just suited for a casino) and then, since we have this tremendous
financial crisis and are in need of revenue to balance the county budget and
support the county infrastructure, lobby to legalize gambling as a way to
balance said budget thereby generating revenue to the county (and of
course, a tremendous profit for the investors). It’s an old scam and one
that works well. Follow the money, it will lead you to the foxes in the
henhouse! |

This
week’s issue of Key West the Newspaper features Dennis Reeves
Cooper’s endorsements for next week’s primary. I had hoped Dennis would
not endorse his Republican friend, Sonny McCoy, for another term on the
County Commission, but would instead promote Sonny becoming Key West’s
ambassador to Cuba, as part of reestablishing ties between those two
historical sister cities. I also had hoped Dennis would not endorse
Republican Dixie Spehar for another term on the County Commission.
And I had hoped Dennis would
not endorse Republican Ken Davis for our Sheriff. Dennis has fought long and
hard for Key West’s Citizen Review Board. Only just last week Dennis wrote a
front page piece about the KW CRB coming of age. Ken Davis has clearly
stated that he does not want a CRB for the Sheriff’s Office, while his
Republican opponent, Phil Mandina, whom Dennis has endorsed in previous
elections, wants a CRB. To be honest, I was stunned that Dennis did not
endorse Phil, and the thought has not left me that Dennis endorsed Ken Davis
because that is who Dennis’ friend Sonny McCoy wanted him to endorse.
I wish to say more about the
two Republican sheriff candidates…Today'sFloridaKeysDrivel

I
had a few downed trees from T/S Fay, and have been dutifully trying
to put all my branches and yard trash into cans for Waste Disposal to take
away two days a week. This may take me at least a month or two to get
it all gone. I also notice a lot of my neighbors (at least two of them
with M.C. Sheriff's cars parked in front) just throwing their yard debris
across the road or next to their houses onto Key Deer land. Will Fish
& Wildlife take care of this or will it just be a big mess next to the road
that we'll all have to look at until it rots? It sure would be
easier for me to just pull my yard trash across the road. What should
I do? What is the right thing? Can't the trash service help us
with this? |

[War is ugly] Suit-up
war-lover, and get your butt to the Middle East and beyond. Hurry now
and you can help usher in Armageddon. If personal safety is something
that should be of no concern to anyone, this should be no problem for
you. Just what the hell is the point of engaging in war, in order to win the
peace, in order to secure ones personal safety in the aftermath and then to
engage in more war? The American dream is evidently to work hard, fall in
love, get married, have children grandchildren and then support illegal
government policies that create war to have your offspring's personal safety
destroyed. What a ridiculous and vicious cycle.
"My country, right or wrong", the battle cry of the feetless fish.
Feetless fish are those unfortunate souls who refuse to grow some human feet
and climb on shore and evolve. What the hell is so difficult to understand
about the fact that a scoundrel government is not necessarily the same as
our beloved country? War, death, blood, gore, maiming, mayhem,
slaughter, funerals more funerals, more and more! Will we always be burdened
with these pathetic feetless fish without vision? These are the
"patriotic" ones who are apparently without social skills sufficient to
approach the world's peoples to work for peace. The only thing
"ugly" in this case is such a dark and death-loving soul. So suit-up,
Mr. Patriot guy. Disregard your personal safety. Many of us do not
desire your protection. If fact our children and grandchildren need
protection from the likes of you and your ilk. So please, go sacrifice
your personal safety. Adios.

found a job already and I am sure that she will be good at it. |

If John McCain
crashed five times and is still alive to talk about it that makes him a
pretty good pilot. An experienced pilot friend of mine once told me, If you
fly a lifetime without incident, that doesn't make you a good pilot. It

practically flies itself. The mark of a good pilot is their ability to get
safely to the ground when things aren't going well. That's the kind of guy

Representatives from Fair Insurance Rates in Monroe (FIRM) appeared
before the Florida Commission Hurricane Loss Projections Methodologies
August 12 and 13, 2008, to discuss factors unique to Monroe County that
should be considered when evaluating models used to project wind damages due
to hurricanes and set windstorm insurance rates statewide.
Insurance
companies contract with model firms such as Eqecat, RMS, AIR and ARA to
produce statistical models used to project probable maximum losses due to
wind damage from hurricanes. These models (considered proprietary and
known as "black box" models) are the basis upon which windstorm insurance
rates are set. Most models predict that Monroe County is the
"riskiest" in the state, and probable maximum loss here would be relatively
higher for any insurance carrier than in any other County in Florida.
The Florida Commission on Hurricane Loss Projection Methodologies evaluates
the soundness of the private models, as well as the Florida Public Hurricane
Model (FPHM). It has been FIRM's contention that models do not reflect
the realities of hurricane damage or construction conventions in the Keys.
A recent meeting at Florida International University with the developers of
the FPHM confirmed this suspicion. During that meeting, Howard
Eagelfeld of the Office of Insurance Regulation suggested that FIRM share
their concerns with the Commission.
FIRM President Heather
Carruthers, Key West, and Board Members Annalise Mannix, P.E., Key West, and
Michele Beach, Key Largo, made the trip to Tallahassee. To the group's
surprise, FIRM was asked to make a presentation at the start of the
Commission's two-day meeting. They presented a PowerPoint slideshow
and answered questions from the Commission for approximately an hour and a
half. |

Isn’t it time for
a little professionalism by our elected County politicians and employees?
I am sick of the arrogant, condescending, rude attitude exhibited by some of
our Commissioners. Are we not a government of the people, for the people and
by the people? That certainly does not seem to be the case here in Monroe
County. Commissioners are elected to represent the best interests of the
county, its residents, and our fragile environment. Do some of these
politicians not realize who really is in charge - it is the voters who
elected them and can see that they are not returned to office! Are you not
sick and tired of our county’s citizens being treated so disrespectfully,
their wishes being totally disregarded, money being spent indiscriminately
resulting in our severe budget crisis, the overdevelopment and serious
strain on our natural resources and the environment?
People, the inmates are running the asylum! It is time for change. As we
elect new citizens to the County Commission, for school board, judge and
mosquito control, please do not underestimate the importance of who we elect
in November for State Attorney. Are you happy with our existing State
Attorney? Has he investigated possible Sunshine Law violations of the County
Commission and what appears to be other questionable behavior? The State
Attorney is the final check that insures that all of these people act in
accordance with the law. In November I am voting for Dennis Ward for State
Attorney. Please educate yourselves about who is running and what they stand
for and then vote Tues Aug 26th in the Primary election and Nov 4th
election for new blood. Put an end to the good ol’ boy network. |

[Global
cooling] There’s more bad news for the Roasted Earth Debacle set.
Still more scientists have published peer reviewed papers that declare that
we’re in a period of global cooling. It’s looking like a trend.
Bonner Cohen published in Environment and Climate News, says: “Natural
variations in climate, driven by shifting ocean currents, could lead to
another decade of cooling global temperatures, according to a peer-reviewed
study in the scientific journal Nature. The cooling
temperatures would add to an ongoing cooling trend that has held sway for
the past decade.” Then there is this:
Researchers at the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in Kiel, Germany and
at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany believe the
average temperature of the sea around Europe and North America will cool
slightly over the next decade. |

are the most dangerous and costly per pound aircraft there is. Figure
an average of $3000+ per hour of flight for costs and maintenance. Plus the

efficiently for the next 100 years. The choppers are only good for

Mrs. McCain (Cindy) is a
seriously major league business lady; there is nothing to suggest that John
McCain has any involvement in the family businesses. You can be sure
that as a part of the family holdings there are substantial real estate
investments. I do know that some of the properties owned by the
McCain’s are occupied by family members. It seems that the McCain’s
take care of family members who are less blessed. In contrast, what of
Obama who’s half brother lives in a ghetto tin shack on a buck a month
while Obama lives in luxury. Both candidates are blessed to have
strong and successful wives who have incomes that outstrip them. Another
similarity is that both candidates attended university at the same
university attended by their fathers, each received a legacy appointment. |

Why
can't crooks like the gang of three be made to pay back the money
they stole from us? I say we take up our pitch forks and shovels and march
on the palace! Come to think of it, we should do the same on a Federal level
too. Our Governments are no longer doing the will of the people; they have
become an entity of their own. The founding fathers of this country are
surely rolling in their graves. They gave us the means thru the Constitution
and Bill of Rights to keep the Federal Gov't in check, but our career
politicians just do as they please and let more and more of our rights erode
for "the common good" (theirs not ours). They are in it for profit and to
Hell with the country or county. They need to be held personally accountable
for their mis-deeds. You or I certainly would be if we stole that kind of
money. |

Beware of Roofers, Waterproofers or
any other so-called “contractors” that beat around the bush when you
ask to see there state and county license and proof of insurance. One line

line that they use is “I will do it on a weekend and save you on the permit
fee” More B.S. I was burned once but I’ll be dammed if I’ll get burned
twice. It’s easy to call the Monroe County Bldg Dept at 289-2501 and check

I was in the same shoes as the
poster last week, complaining about Comcast. I couldn't believe my
eyes, when I saw my bill for $250. I called the Comcast office and the
rudest customer service rep answered my complaint. I got so disgusted that I
had them come and shut it off. Good riddance Comcrap!
I
was listening to Biz Baz and found out we have a local DIRECTV dealer down
here, a place called the Phone Depot. I called them and they set me up with
an appointment for installation right away. They even explained to me, that
they offer the same price and packages as the 800 number. Which is true
because Icalled that disastrous 800 number and they kept me on hold for so
long it was unbelievable. Then they told me that the installer would be a
contractor from Miami and my install would take three weeks.
So, I called the Phone Depot and they came out the next
day and even told me not to sit home waiting for them, that they would call
me one hour before they get to my house, as a courtesy call, and hell, they
did! A real nice guy (calls himself Sammy-sam the Directv-man) showed up and
hooked me up with the best HD TV I've ever seen. I now realize that the HD
I've been paying Comcast so much money for is the poorest quality HD, but I
didn't know it.
I'm getting better quality TV, three additional 100%
digital receivers in my other rooms, and saving over $150. The best thing is
that DirecTV will not raise their package pricing on you (unlike Comcast),
because you have a contract with them, which sounds good to me. This guy
(Sammy-sam) was just so wonderful. I also found out that they are a Hughes
net satellite internet dealer. He explained to me that an additional dish
would have to be installed and you have internet access via satellite. Which
is durable and dependable and fast because you're not sharing any space like
you do on cable modems or on Bell South DSL.
The best point he made to me was that in the event of a
hurricane, while DSL and cable TV and cable internet will probably be down
due to fallen lines, as long as you have a generator in your house, you will
be able to watch TV and have access to the Internet via satellite--keeping
in touch with the outside world. So I purchased the Hughes net through them
and got it installed. The Internet package is only $59.99 a month. No
telephone line required. I'm still saving over $100. They're local and they
do sales service and installations. I hope you guys post this cause
it's worth spreading around to our locals who are sick of the cable monopoly
and their abusive disregard for us customers. Their number is 305-872-9099
and ask for Sammy-sam. You won't be sorry. |

[Hates everyone] No Ed,
that was not proper of you to preface my submission yesterday with that. I
do not hate everyone. Just the people that have treated me like dirt in one
way or another. The same group of people may have treated you very nicely
and you would, no doubt, have a better opinion of one or all of them. Joe
and Meri Lynn from Coconuts have been wonderful to me as well as all of

staff and bartenders there have always been nice. John at Big Pine

So for you to imply that I hate everyone, is just downright wrong. Only the

couldn't resist asking him, “Do you think I'll live to be 80?” He
asked, “Do you smoke tobacco, or drink beer or wine?” “Oh, no.” I replied.
“I'm not doing drugs, either!” Then he asked, “Do you eat rib-eye steaks and
barbecued ribs?” I said, “No, my former doctor said that all red meat is
very unhealthy!” “Do you spend a lot of time in the sun, like playing golf,
sailing, hiking, or bicycling?” “No, I don't.” I said. He asked, “Do you
gamble, drive fast cars, or have a lot of sex?” “No.” I said. He looked at
me and said, “Then, why do you even give a damn?” |

Recently a
neighbor went for a walk up Falls Creek, found a baby moose
in some distress in the creek. He got him out of the creek, tried to
send him on his way, tried to find the mother. Eventually the baby
moose stumbled back into the creek, was rescued again, and followed
Jonathon home. Jonathon lives in a very small cabin, so he took the
moose to another neighbor (Andrea Smith), who took these photos.
I have never even seen moose in this
area, so am bewildered that a recently born moose would be on its
own, way up a mountainous creek
They took the moose the next day to Helen Jamieson in Blewett, who
looks after wild animals. She put it in a pen with a fawn.
Apparently the moose calf/deer fawn combo is excruciatingly
cute. For you international types, Blewett is an area just outside
Nelson, BC. Lots of up-scale homes there in a gorgeous mountain
setting. |

it from about three feet above its surface.

[Hates everybody] The
"boys at the local restaurant" are the two most obnoxious human beings I
have ever encountered in the many years I have been on earth. The one's
father is the only reason that they own anything at all. The other one,
is a rude, crass, self-centered twit that is completely devoid of any
people skills--- thinks his feces are without odor and basically should
not manage a restaurant or anything else for that matter. Hell---he
can't 'manage' a good bowel movement. The gal that was let go has been
with them for more than 5 years that I am aware of. She was neither
incompetent nor unreliable. As a former restaurant owner, I know that
your first responsibility is to your restaurant and its success. That is
not an issue, the fact she raises two kids is not your responsibility
and I fully agree. Your second responsibility is to your staff---the
ones that have been loyal to you and have performed without fault. If
someone is there for 5 or more years and they make a mistake in judgment
or something along that line, take a moment to think about it before you
micro-manage yourself out of business. I have not set foot in what I
referred to, on this site a while back; as "the evil empire" for more
than 4 years and never will again.
If you are not a tourist and
you go to that place, you are a misinformed local. They had said openly
that they do not care about us locals. While I am rolling…the girl
running the establishment across the highway should hop on the clue-bus.
The level of entertainment there has hit a new low. She blames people
for the actions of others and pretty much lets one bartender call all of
the shots for her. And right down the street a ways---there is another
restaurant whose owner was extremely rude to me and does not realize
that the only reason anyone even talks to him is that he has money. Hey,
I play circles around that 'jazz' guy you have there and you hire
five-chord wonders too. You are just a weird old man. There is another
place on BPK that has no reason to be in business any longer. The
manager is rude also and completely without people or business skills,
but I really just think she is not mean spirited like the others I have
mentioned. I think it is simply because she does not know any better.
I have wanted to write an
expose of these few "lesser than nice" folks for a while, and I had no
trepidation in identifying them by name and thereby having the editor
put my email address in my post. I think that most of you that have been
here for a while can piece together who they are and who I am. More fun
that way anyway. Hell, it was easy for me to figure out "the boys" are,
from that phrase alone. They fired a friend of mine who was a cook there
for a long time and they worked him to death and he was so loyal to the
place, it was embarrassing for them. They fired a close relative of mine
for calling and cancelling a music engagement due to illness despite the
many favors he had done for them in the past. They fired, with no
notice, a musician that had been their mainstay for years based on the
advice of some yahoo consultant that they paid far more money to then
they would ever regain in business profits. So, if you look up the term
'tourist-trap' there should be a prominent picture of this place. Mama
honey, you are a sweet lady. You will land on your feet. Walk toward the
light. Salvation is in the light! |

understand they are very expensive both to buy and to fly. I bet most of
you taxpayers don't know that you pay for five choppers, not counting
the old Vietnam Hueys the county bought. My point is that mosquito
control has 4 choppers that are very well maintained which set on the
ground over 90% of the time. Even though a med-evac chopper is rigged
much different and larger, could there not be a dual use chopper or even
2 looked at to do both these jobs? Sounds like mucho grande
savings to me. |

amazes me. The useful idiots that mismanage Moron (Monroe) County are
trying to build condos at our airports and hurricane hotels on Stock

you scrap off your shoe. No wonder they left like their tail was on fire

I read that someone claims
they were told a real estate company won't show a listing that
isn't with them at 7% commission. I sold real estate in my former life

sales now and can't afford to be picky about whose listing they sell. |

[induced labor abortion]
This procedure may be ordered beginning in the pregnancy’s second
trimester. In this procedure, the host (mother) of the cell mass
(fetus) is given medication that dilates her cervix. The medications
cause a labor process which eventually propels the fetus out. The
expelled cell mass (now a baby) may or may not be viable (alive). Here’s
where the conflict begins. What should be done with or about this live
infant? Does this infant have human rights, i.e. the right to life?
Obama won’t tell us what is in his heart. We can deduce what Obama
believes because he has a voting record on this exact issue. Obama was
in the Illinois state Senate when a bill known as “Induced Birth Infant
Liability Act” was promulgated. This act proposed to make it the law
of Illinois that the life of a child born alive as the result of an
induced labor abortion would be protected. That bill required the
health care provider to care for the new born live infant. It codified
the infant's right to life. The law would prevent the common practice of
simply setting the infant aside so that it would languish and die. Obama
fought against this bill, hard, 3 times. This affects you whether your
"pro life" or "pro choice". |

County Mayor Mario Di Gennaro presented the City of Key West’s
Commissioners with his view of the County’s future with his proposal for a
19 storey hotel (that is a rendering from the architect--minus the writing)
at the airport. Has this man’s greed overwhelmed his reasoning? I couldn’t
sleep worrying about my dear Keys and what this man is trying to do to them
and us. Mario, this isn't Miami, it really isn't.
Us citizens have to do something
about this man before he does irreparable damage to our life style down
here. We need a recall referendum now! We can’t take the risk to the Keys of
leaving him in office until the next election. There’s no telling what he
may do. Mario Di Generate is out of touch and a dangerous man. Recall him
now!

[Ma Ma the fired cook] Just
because she has two kids and is struggling is no reason for an employer to
keep a lousy worker (I’m not saying she was lousy, but there must
have been something wrong). One time when I was looking for help in my
restaurant I was pressured to hire a needy mother who was f**ked up and
would have hurt my business. I didn’t hire her and was bad-mouthed by her
friends because she “really needed the job”. She was not my responsibility,
my business was my responsibility. “Really needing a job” is not a job
qualification. If an employee does not enhance a business they should be
fired. |

| It's bad enough we've lost our

wants to put a 19 storey hotel next to the new mega airport! Miami
South. |

Now a 16 year old can drive a 3000 pound vehicle at 75 mph or drive a
semi-trailer for work. A kid only has to be 17 to join the military, with a
waver, and be trained to push a button to kill 20 million people, yet they
cannot buy a beer! The idea of lowering the drinking age to 18 in all states
is fine. Some states have it already. Now how about
raising the driving age
for females to
40 or 50? That’s an idea whose time has come. Our insurance rates would go
down greatly! |

[Dixie Spehar, The
independent voice on the County commission] I am writing to clarify and
inform my fellow citizens of additional past actions of Commissioner
Spehar. It is amazing how much information is withheld from the voters of
Monroe County during the election season. Spehar touts her County
experience and I thought you should have the right to ask her any questions
relating to the issues listed below. This post will focus on one issue and
it will be followed up with additional questions prior to the primary.
In 2005, while Spehar was mayor of Monroe County, she filed bankruptcy. Her
personnel attorney, Jerry Coleman (the guy who took the County for over
$400,000) , had the case moved to Palm Beach County and had the file sealed
so we could not see how Spehar handled her personal finances.
Also in 2005, Spehar purchased a house boat for an undisclosed amount. She
also spent over $40,000 in 2005 and 2006 for a total of over $80K renovating
her home. Ms Spehar’s income as a commissioner was approx $45K a year for
those two years. You do the math. How can someone who files bankruptcy,
earns $45K a year in income, buy a home and make $90K in renovations? This
is according to the MC Property Appraiser’s office, (they refused to release
the docs) but informed me over the phone of the above figures submitted by
Spehar. Maybe she thought that her use of an alias “McCarty”, would keep
the voters from knowing about her past experience.
Why would a sitting commissioner use an alias? What could she be hiding?
Did she think her use of the alias “McCarty” would hide the truth from the
voters? The person she bought the home from is none other than Joe
O’Connell, one of the owners of Safe Harbor Marina. (Coincidently, Ms Spehar
is supporting re-development of the working waterfront and the building of a
hotel at Safe Harbor). I wondered who paid for the purchase and renovations
to her home. It seems that Spehar only uses this alias “McCarty” for this
Safe Harbor financial arrangement.
Spehar’s BOCC financial accounts list her official payee name for her
commissioner salary as “Spehar”. Then why use an alias? She should
disclose her personal finances from 2004 to the present so we can see the
truth. Who paid for what? Also, release her bankruptcy filing(s). (I use
the plural just in case you have more than one on the books that we cannot
find.)
In the name of Sunshine, please respond to these questions prior to the
primary election here on the Coconut Telegraph. If you don’t, I am sure the
voters of Monroe County will notice.
Next up: Stock Island Sewer and Key West Airport Grand Jury comments about
our independent commissioner. And maybe a little Hickory House shenanigans
to get your blood boiling. Learn more at

[Here’s
one for Snopes.com] This month's featured chemical is Triclosan,
America's favorite anti-microbial chemical. I was dubious when I was told
that Triclosan is Agent Orange. Turns out they are cousins. It is also a
bisphenol, now in the news for causing cancer when off gassed from
plastics. Unless you do open heart surgery for a living - soap and water
works just fine.
I got interested in Triclosan when a customer
called and asked for me personally. He wanted to tell me that for over a
year he had been severely depressed and suicidal. He was always the "happy
guy" and the depression caused the breakup of his marriage and the loss of
his job. He was trying to figure out if anything in his life had changed to
cause his troubles. One morning he was reaching for his underarm deodorant
(Old Spice High Endurance (TM)) - Triclosan is the high endurance part of
the formula). His 14 year old son walked by on his way out the door to
school and said; "Hey Pops, I don't know how you can use that stuff, it
makes me all sad and stuff."
It was then that he realized that a year ago he
had changed from regular Old Spice deodorant to the High Endurance
formula. 8 days after he stopped using it "the fog lifted" and he was his
old self. After 2 weeks clean he started using it again. 6 days later his
depression (with mild autistic symptoms) returned. He stopped using it, and
8 days later the fog cleared once more.
Last I heard the family was intact and back to
normal. and that his old boss had hired him back. YEAH! This stuff is a
nervine agent, possibly carcinogenic and possibly interacts with chlorine in
the water to form chloroform. Quite a bundle for something we never needed
in the first place. |

[Arizona’s
Sheriff Joe]
I have lived in Maricopa
County for several years--these things are all true--Sheriff Joe's Jail has
the lowest number of returns in the state. He is one tough SOB, and the Law
abiding people love him. The bad guys don't like him.
Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray
animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department
over, and the County Supervisors said okay.
The animal
shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care
for the strays. Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice
daily. He now has prisoners who are experts in animal nutrition and
behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal.
He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of
prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.
The best
part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million. The
prisoners get the benefit of about $0.28 an hour for working, but most would
work for free, just to be out of their cells for the day. Most of his budget
is for utilities, building maintenance, etc. He pays the prisoners out of
the fees collected for adopted animals.
I have long
wondered when the rest of the country would take a look at the way he runs
the jail system, and copy some of his ideas. He has a huge farm, donated to
the county years ago, where inmates can work, and they grow most of their
own fresh vegetables and food, doing all the work and harvesting by hand. He
has a pretty good sized hog farm, which provides meat, and fertilizer. It
fertilizes the Christmas tree nursery, where prisoners work, and you can buy
a living Christmas tree for $6 - $8 for the Holidays, and plant it
later. We have six trees in our yard from the Prison.
He
was reelected last year with 83% of the vote.
Now he's in
trouble with the ACLU again. He painted all his buses and vehicles with a
mural that has a special hotline phone number painted on it where you can
call and report suspected illegal aliens. Immigrations and Customs
Enforcement wasn't doing enough in his eyes, so he had 40 deputies trained
specifically for enforcing immigration laws, started up his hotline, and
bought 4 new buses just for hauling folks back to the border. He's kind of a
'Git-R Dun' kind of Sheriff. |

Obama’ poll numbers are
plummeting. It appears that a whale of a lot of Americans are seeing beyond
the glitz and glamour of Obama’s façade and are coming to the conclusion
that he is just a pretty face in an empty suit. Wednesday morning Reuters
reported that a Zogby poll, taken before the Saddleback illumination,
showed that McCain now has a 9-point edge. He is 49 percent to 40 percent,
over Obama on the critical question of who would be the best manager of the
economy. Even Obama’s Democrat support plummeted. Obama's support among
Democrats fell 9 percentage points this month to 74 percent, while McCain
has the backing of 81 percent of Republicans. Support for Obama, an Illinois
senator, fell 12 percentage points among liberals, with 10 percent of
liberals still undecided compared to 9 percent of conservatives. Americans
of all political persuasion are realizing that Obama has no experience in
leading, nor does he have any experience in making tough decisions. His
promise to “change” has only delivered an intellect-boggling series of mind
changes on his part. I expect that the polls will look even worse for Obama
after the mess he made at the Saddleback Forum. David Gergen on CNN said
that based on the most recent polls, McCain would win the Electoral College.
Do you find it amusing that the Miami Herald and the Key West
Citizen ignored this astounding course change? What media bias? |

[McCain
crashed five airplanes] Who knows if this is true. I suppose the poster
counted the one that was shot down.
I have a friend that was an Army
helicopter pilot in Vietnam. He flew Special Forces missions to 'places we
never went to'. He 'crashed' three birds in one day, actually he was shot
down three times in one day. Does that make him a bad pilot? Actually he
kept returning under fire to rescue guys on the ground. Some came back
alive, some did not. Thank goodness for 100 mile an hour duct tape and guys
with guts and honor.
Perhaps Mr. Poster you should not
criticize McCain unless you both flew and suffered in his shoes.
Another Navy buddy of
mine was taught to fly by John McCain. He tells me McCain was pretty darn
good. I will fly with McCain any day |

I
was glad to read that someone refused to pay the
price fixing of 7%
that (I assume they were talking about Coldwell Banker) insisted on to list
their house. One of their Realtors came to interview to list my house and
told me that if I didn't list with them that nobody from the company would
show my house and they have most of the business. I showed him my door and
shared that story with everyone in my neighborhood, at my kids’ baseball
games, football games, PTA, cheerleading, church and Rotary. Florida Keys
Realty listed it for 6% and sold it too. I would recommend Florida Keys
Realty to anyone looking to sell. Great job ladies! ~realflestate@hotmail.com |

[Foreign
workers in the Keys] There is an item on tonight’s BOCC agenda which
looks innocuous, but close review reveals it is extremely important, a
water-shed moment. Item O.10. DiGennaro - Discussion and approval of a
Board approved letter of support for application by EB5 Capital
Partners, LLC.
They want to invite
foreigners to invest their capitol in the US, (specifically Monroe
County according to the support letter) and also bring in their fellow
countrymen as their employees. They
refer to bringing in immigrants as workers - not investors, or investors
bringing in their own employees (foreigners).
Then read
www.http://www.sunbiz.org/
information about EB5. This is a new company just registered on Sunbiz
in March. Sunbiz shows principals also associated with
Immigration Center International, formed in
March. Is this really a good idea - to commit Monroe to support a
company only 4 months old and to replace struggling local workers with
low paying foreigners?
The BOCC support letter
also reads, In addition, foreign investment will not only help us
grow but will support important economic development to areas most in
need. That's the same thought England had when it first invited in
Middle Easterners. Now, they're regretting their actions of having sold
off pieces of their country.
The backup documentation
states this program was started in 1990, and (now 18 yrs later) there
are only 17 areas of the country participating. That's a huge red flag!
If this is such a good idea, why isn't it happening all over the
country? Obviously, other municipal leaders recognize the problems and
issues. And, of course EB5 wants to start their immigration
investing program in south Florida because of the high level of
immigrants already here, and Cuba's future changes.
This foreign investor
issue touches and affects the very core of how we Americans feel
about our country. The question is countrywide. What price is our
country worth? Where does investing stop and taking-over start?
Let's put this on the
referendum and really ask the people of Monroe County “Is this the
future you want for Monroe County?” Maybe not tomorrow, but this is
where it starts. Read the last line of the letter from EB5 and ask
yourself, “Does the Monroe County community really ‘embraces such an
economic development program’"?
[BOCC's letter of
support] Dear Mr. Berez:
The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners have recently seen a
presentation by the principals ofEB5 Capital Partners, LLC who have
provided details of their intentions to create an immigrant investor
regional center pursuant to the EB5 classification created in 1991,
known as the alien entrepreneur investor category. The South Florida
Investment Regional Center will attract foreign investment, which will
be utilized to promote economic growth in Miami-Dade and Monroe
Counties, including the creation of jobs, increased export sales, and
increased domestic capital investment.
Monroe County is considered a destination of choice in this hemisphere.
The County's privileged geographic location, transportation services
-air, sea and land, vast natural beauty, and most importantly, a
talented and diverse workforce allow our community to shine as a venue
for foreign investment.
Our unique status has made our community a global destination and for
all these reasons, foreign investors will find abundant opportunity in
Monroe County. In addition, foreign investment will not only help us
grow but will support important economic development to areas most in
need. We welcome the South Florida Investment Regional Center (SFIRC)
and look forward to working with them in any manner possible so as to
assist them in achieving their goals.
Sincerely,
Mario Di Gennaro Mayor
[Letter from EB5] From:
J. Eric Gould, EBS Capital Partners, LLC
To: Mayor Mario Di Gennaro, Monroe County
Conclusion: As part of the application EB5 Capital Partners is
submitting to USCIS for designation of the South Florida Investment
Regional Center, it would be beneficial to include letters of support
from municipal authorities within the designated geographical limits of
the proposed regional center. Because of the importance and opportunity
involved with the potential of establishing an immigrant investor
regional center in Monroe County, we believe that your support, through
a letter of recommendation, would greatly enhance the stature of the
application. While the support of municipal authorities is not required
by the USCIS regional center regulations, EB5 Capital Partners believes
that your support is an important factor in signaling that the community
embraces such an economic development program. |

What
does BOCC have to do with the 5 Lane Extension to Key West? The
DOT will do that for the greater safety of traffic through all the Keys.
It is just a matter of time, just like the waste water treatment in
different areas. We, in all the Keys, need up-to-date infrastructure for
our locals and visitors alike. That would be wonderful, but they must
put cement dividers in the no-passing areas to stop the head-on
accidents. |
This morning’s Key West Citizen
editorial page features a long letter from Sheriff Rick
Roth blasting the Citizen for not even calling him
before it wrote a critical article about him and the Sheriff Office
converting the Juvenile Detention Center to a paid-detention center
for federal detainees, which funds could be used to pay for Trauma
Star. Sheriff Roth wrote that the state had operated the Juvenile
Detention Center and had discontinued operating it, leaving it
vacant and in need of something else to do, so to speak. Besides
using it for housing federal detainees, it also would be used to
house county trusties, Sheriff Roth wrote. He seemed especially
upset that the Citizen had accused him of committing his
successor to keep the Trauma Star, by instituting this program for
the Trauma Star’s benefit just before he is leaving office and after
the County Commission had put to the voters in the upcoming election
the decision of whether or not to keep the Trauma Star. He ended his
long letter with, “If you have questions of the Sheriff’s Office,
ask it. We’d be happy to answer any questions directly. You can’t
always believe what you read in the newspaper.”
My own experience also is that you can’t always believe what you
read in the newspapers, including Key West Citizen. And my
experience also is that you can’t always believe what Sheriff Roth
and his office say, or that they will always answer your questions.
What seems to be getting overlooked by Sheriff Roth and the
Citizen, and perhaps by many people, is that it seems that we
are no longer going to have a place to house juvenile detainees.
Does this mean juveniles are going to be housed with adult
offenders? If so, I don’t think that’s a good idea at all. Nor, for
that matter, do I think it’s a good idea to use the jail to fund the
Trauma Star, nor for the Trauma Star even to be a part of the
sheriff’s operation. The rest...

While
crossing the Niles Channel Bridge Tuesday about Noon I noticed that at
least 3 of the sailboats that were anchored in Niles Channel were
blown onto the shore of Summerland Key. Is this another situation like
we had at Big Pine’s North Channel Bridge when our electricity was
knocked out because a sailboat's anchor broke lose and the boat was
blown into the power lines? And Fay wasn't even a hurricane. It looks
like there's another channel with poor anchoring conditions. |

“Cell
mass”, is such a lovely term, so innocuous. It brings to mind a
tumor, or perhaps a boil, or perhaps a hemorrhoid. But when used by a
liberal progressive it usually means a fetus, a brand new human being
that is destined to be killed, all too often for the convenience of its
host, its mother. Obama’s response to the question about when does a
fetus attain human rights, was astounding. “That’s above my pay grade”
was his response. It obvious that Obama lacks the courage of his
purported convictions. Why was he unable to give a cogent answer to
that question? Or worse, why did he refuse? Obama has just told all
“pro lifers” that he will go with the flow; he’ll do or say whatever it
takes to get elected, he simply has no core of beliefs. He is nothing
but a smiling empty suit. If I were a “pro lifer”, I’d be worried, very
worried! |
|
Obama’s early career
was marked by his being involved in “community organizing”, and signing
up Democrat voters in Chicago’s South Ward. Obama’s early years were
spend forging friendships and alliances with corruptors and bribers of
politicians, America hating Clergy and still braggadocios America hating
terrorists I suppose that could be considered hazardous, but only to a
Republican. By the way, it’s been reported that Obama and his Dad
attended Harvard. It’s interesting that both Obama and McCain had
“legacy” appointments to University. McCain’s candid response to the
“morality” question was unequivocal; his greatest moral failure was his
failure in his first marriage. Obama whined about not having his father
about, hence, being a selfish child, he did drugs and was a boozer
(don’t believe me, check out the transcript). The contrast between
these two could not be greater. The poster who denigrated McCain’s
service deserves only scorn. |

Richard Beal, owner of Skeeter's Marine, has been trying to build 34
workforce houses on his Big Pine Key property for almost two years now.
Beal states, Big Pine lost the chance to receive one million dollars in
possible grant moneys because Monroe County officials wouldn't submit
the application for a grant which funds changing of commercial property
into workforce housing. Beal found the grant opportunity and completed
95% of the application process which county officials only needed to
finish and submit by August 15th. It never happened, says Beal. He sent
it to the planning dept and every Commissioner, only one even responded.
The grant, if received would have cost the county nothing.
Beal, a property rights
activist stated, Monroe County has continually stood in the way of his
project, Caya Place, using the county's signing onto the endangered
species act incidental take permit as a reason. Beal has proven the
issues which hold Big Pine Key in a strangle hold, are unjust and the
planning department also agrees. County officials only care about
politics, not people, says Beal. In Beal's mind Big Pine has no
government and demands we must take back the property rights that have
been stolen from us. The Keys issues are limitless in numbers, says
Beal, but one thing is for sure, with regard to housing, until we, as
elders of the community, make a positive quality of lifestyle for our
young adults, we will never have a future, only a workforce which
remains, underpaid, without housing and transient. |
|

You are right! It is time to remove the "environmentalists" from
control and put the people first again. Just look at how much tax
dollars have been spent fighting lawsuits that the County could have
avoided if they had competent land use planners instead of listening to

and Protect Key West and Florida Keys, Inc., d/b/a Last Stand. These
organizations are a front for a few individual's personal agenda. Shame
on the County for not standing up for the taxpayers and residents. |

Only a tropical
storm? We did a lot of preparation for Fay and I am glad we did.
Maybe she was a small storm, but you never know. It could have been
worse. I would rather be safe than sorry. My next door neighbors
laughed at us for putting up storm shutters, securing things, and
removing all the loose items from our yard. We have some debris and
leaves to clean up. They will be out for days picking up all their
yards ornaments, trash cans, lawn furniture, etc that blew all over
their yard. I think I will sit in my lawn chair with a cold cocktail

got broken up and thrown all over their yard during the storm. I think

The poster who woofed about
McCain yesterday is an interesting character. So is Elmer Fudd. In
this posters fevered little mind, being shot down on a combat mission,
grievously wounded, and then tortured for years in captivity makes
McCain unfit to serve as President? Being in the seat of combat
aircraft awaiting launch for a combat mission and having his aircraft
burn and explode around him in a conflagration, not of his causing,
makes him unfit to be President? Having engine failure in a single
engine combat training aircraft, makes McCain unfit to be President?
The posters purposefully broad strokes does not give us sufficient info
to comment on the posters allegations. I can’t be sure, but I believe at
least one of the “crashes” the poster spoke about actually belong to
McCain’s Dad who apparently did not attend flight school until he was
50. In any event, each of the episodes alleged McCain was in the
service of his country, engaged in an honorable high hazard profession
and was protecting the attack poster’s right to complain about a
political candidate not of his choosing.
McCain’s legacy Annapolis appointment and his
atrocious class standing most certainly did not affect his incredible
and heroic public service career. McCain attained the rank of Captain.
McCain family members have graduated from Annapolis and had exemplary
military careers. Public service is a family tradition. His naval
career as a young man was marked with service to his country, heroics
and achievement. The poster doesn't bother to comment on McCains service
as a United States Congressman, nor of his long service as a United
States Senator. |

Cassiopea
xamachana is a jellyfish that is found in Bermuda, throughout
the Caribbean Sea, and some areas of the warm western Atlantic Ocean.
The common name of this species is the upside-down jellyfish. Given its
life style, it does not look like the typical jellyfish, appearing as a
greenish gray-blue flower on the seafloor. It is found on the muddy
bottoms of inshore bays and ponds and is most commonly seen on Bermuda
in Walsingham Pond and Harrington Sound. Because they live their lives
on the bottom with large portions of their carbon and nutrition coming
from their symbiotic zooxanthellae, they tend to be in shallow areas
saturated with sunlight. This species reproduces through strobilation,
similar to most other jellies, but with varying. As with other
cnidarians, C. xamachana has nematocysts covering its tentacles
and digestive tract. It uses these stinging cells for both feeding and
defense. It is fairly common on the island and there are no specific
Bermudian laws that protect C. xamachana. But it does make its
home in several protected areas, leading to indirect protection of the
species. |

His
first marriage was John McCain's greatest moral failure. What's
that all about? Isn't it true we need to know a lot more about John
McCain? We do know that he took advantage of "affirmative action" to
get into the Naval Academy. (He got in, even though he would not have
qualified if his father and grandfather were not Rear Admirals. The
Navy calls it a "legacy appointment.") We also know that McCain seems to
be somewhat unlucky in war. It's hard to believe, but this is his
record:
1. In 1958 while
practicing landings, McCain crashed his plane into Corpus Christi Bay
(that's in the United States). He said his engine quit.
2. After leaving flight school in 1960, he was in Spain, flew into some
power lines and crashed.
3. In 1965 he crashed while flying a trainer solo to Philadelphia for
the Army-Navy football game.
4. In July, 1967, he was assigned to the USS Forrestal and was in a
plane waiting to take off. A rocket accidentally discharged, flew
across the flight deck and hit either his plane or the one behind it.
The resulting explosions and fire killed 131 crewmen and injured 161.
5. In October, 1967, on a mission over Hanoi, his A-4E Skyhawk was shot
down by a North Vietnam missile. He parachuted into a lake in
Hanoi, was captured and held as a prisoner of war for 5 and 1/2 years.
In all, John McCain crashed five airplanes during his military service.
Does anyone know if that is a record? I know if you shoot down 5
airplanes you qualify as an Ace Pilot, but what if you wreck 5 of your
own? Also, how was McCain given the opportunity to be a naval aviator in
the fighter pilot program when he graduated in the bottom one percent of
his class (894 out of 899)? These programs are usually the most
competitive in the Navy and reserved for top graduates of Annapolis and
other Officer Candidate Schools. Is that why he was such a lousy pilot?
Hasn't the time come for McCain to release his entire military record.
What else is in those 636 pages that he has refused to release? We
should be entitled to know if it reflects on his ability to be
president. |

Yesterday,
Sandy Downs gave me the psychologist’s report from her
divorce/child custody case. I didn’t want to read it but felt I needed
to read it anyway.
In a nutshell, the psychologist appointed by the judge at Sandy’s
request, because her husband was accusing her of being an abusive
mother, slammed Sandy’s character almost across the board.
Almost--because the psychologist did not find Sandy was an abusive
mother, and after slamming her for four or five single-spaced typed
pages, he wrote that he saw no reason why she should not have custody of
her minor children.
In his report, the psychologist seemed very affected by the fact
that Sandy had been quite late to two prior appointments. He began his
report by telling the court about Sandy being late for those two
appointments, and he said it again near the very end, just before he
switched lanes and supported Sandy having custody of her minor children.
To be honest, by the time I had read that far in the report, I fully
expected the psychologist to recommend to the court that Sandy not have
custody of her minor children.
People with a PhD in psychology, which this man put after his name
on his report to the court, are supposed to be trained and are supposed
to be able to recognize when a patient has triggered their own personal
hubris. People with a PhD in psychology are supposed to be trained and
are supposed to know when to step out of their own personal reaction to
a patient. People with a PhD in psychology are supposed to be trained
and are supposed to take themselves off a case altogether, if they are
unable to be impartial and objective.
This psychologist was neither impartial nor objective. This
psychologist was reacting, and only at the very end did he catch himself
enough to write to the court that Sandy should not be denied custody of
her minor children.

The
good folks of the Keys should be aware that Sandra Downs,
self-supported candidate for Monroe County Sheriff, is flipping out
about the divorce file being opened because there is much more than the
psychologicals that are very revealing about her. She began flipping
out after I gave my consent to unseal the file which she had sealed
through a lie to cover her own atrocities (the only document missing was
where her lawyer put a lien on her house).
Sloan, for the second time, per Sandra's information, has claimed that
the court rebuilt the divorce file from Sandra's photocopies. Anybody
in the know realizes that the court has copies of every document and has
done so prior to the electronic age by microfiche. How long ago was he
a lawyer--during the ice age?
I
haven't, and won't waste anybodies time addressing the rest of the false
garbage Sloan has printed about me as I understand that most of the
Keys’ folks interpret and read his stuff as entertainment purposes
only-- kind of like a local soap opera. Eventually the truth will
prevail as it usually does. ~Hartmanbob@aol.com |

We
would like to know what a**hole trimmed their coconut trees and decided
it was a good idea to throw over a 100 coconuts and trimmings
into the east end of the canal between Flying Cloud Ave and Enterprise
in Pine Channel Estates on Monday morning with the storm approaching?
Where do they think they are going to go to? |

I got a kick out of the weather men standing on the beach in the middle
of the storm telling everyone to stay home. How about the wind
surfer who didn't heed the warnings either. He was air lifted from the
surf into the side of a high rise. Ouch! |

[Key largo’s fifth lane] To find out if it’s really about
development or not simply find out how the gang of three will vote. If
they vote for it—its purpose is to enable development. |

Ah, it is so
nice in KW now that it's closed. No pilgrims around to screw things
up. It’s great, just like the old days! |

[The
Hungarian on Russians]
Yes, I sill read this page every night. I love to read the posts that
are sent in by people who are stupider than I am. If you want my opinion
about the Russians, I must tell you that I hate them. Not as
individuals, but their mentality. Putin, that little sawed off
sunofabitch, fits the mold perfectly. Now it's Georgia (Gruzia)
later he will find pretexts to run over the Baltic
States, maybe even the Ukraine.
There are a lot of communists in the Ukraine who cry for the old
U.S.S.R. it would be very easy for him to build up a 5th. Column just
like Hitler did in the Sudetenland in 1937 and 1938. As far as the
missile shield, a poster explained it very adequately. A shield is a
shield until I hit you over the head with it. I will not live to see it,
but it would be great if the Russkies and the Chinese have a go at each
other. Two problems solved. |

[Political
ad] Regarding the desired marriage of Church and State, let's
enthrone the Lord Jesus Christ Almighty in the Oval Office and get it
over with. Then we can have the much lauded and anticipated
Armageddon. Then all the good angels can carry-off the righteous
survivors on gossamer wings. Boy, that'll be heaven. My name is
Beelzebub, and I approved this message. |

They’re going to close the Chart Room for good (again). Boy, I’ve
had some goods times in there--so they say! I still go in occasionally,
but the smell in there is overwhelming. I have to be in my cups to go
there because of it. |

I'm glad I got up early for a peek at your webcam, since it's
showing 'offline' now. I'll bet it's pretty popular with Fay
approaching. (Ed: Yea, It O.D. right off the bat. It was always on,
but always filled with viewers. I hope to get more bandwidth for the
next storm.) |

It matters not if you a pro-life or pro-choice, you and our
nation deserve a President who will be decisive and honest in stating
his positions and beliefs. Unless of course that person is a pro-lifer. |

[Depression is caused by
thinking about yourself too much]
I think it's more a case of thinking
what you used to be and what you used to be able to do and
how long it takes you to do it now. Yea, I guess you’re right—thinking
about yourself too much. |
