Building Relationships to Succeed in Business

This is a free group, allowing the business owners in the community to build their businesses through referrals. We will hold the meeting every Thursday morning. The Lower Keys Referral Group will be industry exclusive. Industry exclusive means only one profession or field is allowed membership in the group. This means we can have only one Financial Advisor, one Realtor, one Mortgage Broker, etc. It eliminates competition for business within the group.

Country Two-Step
Line Dancing

Mondays
7 to 9 pm

Country dancing has been added to the list of classes offered by the Dallas MacDonald Senior Center in Big Pine Key. Led by Kim and Hoss Ranck, the class includes two-step, waltz, and circle dances, all with a country theme. Says Kim, “We’re just going to have fun.” The free classes are held Monday nights from 7 to 9 pm. For more information call Kim at 484-356-3313.

Other activities at the Center include line dancing, exercise, quilting, bowling, and keyboard classes. The prime activity, however, provided by Monroe County, is the daily lunch program available to all seniors. This is a vital asset for those who are unable to prepare meals for themselves.  The suggested donation is $2, but more is greatly appreciated since the actual cost is over $9.  Monroe County also provides limited transportation.  Call the center for more information: 872-3990.

The Dallas MacDonald Senior Center is on Key Deer Blvd. behind the new fire station.

Nature Walks in the Refuge

Tour the Trails on National Key Deer Refuge] Guided refuge trail walks conducted during the fall proved to be very popular and will continue to be offered throughout the spring months at National Key Deer Refuge.  Outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and skill levels are invited to join the fun!  A new addition for the spring is the “Walking Watson on Wednesdays”.  Participants will meet directly at the Key Deer Refuge’s Nature Trails parking lot at 9 am each Wednesday in February and March for this trail walk led by volunteers.

Returning to the schedule are the “Migrating Walks” which feature a different refuge trail each month.  The centralized meeting point for these alternating walks will be at the National Key Deer Refuge Visitor's Center, located in the Winn Dixie shopping plaza on Big Pine Key.  Maps to the trails will be provided at the Visitor Center, and from there, participants will caravan to the scheduled trail site.  A prompt departure to the alternating trail locations will take place at 8:10 am to avoid missing out on morning bird activity, so please plan to arrive early.

Each walk will end by 11:00 am.  Participants should bring a hat, sunscreen, bug spray, comfortable walking shoes, water, binoculars or spotting scope, field guides, and dress appropriately for the weather (flip flops are not recommended, as trail conditions can be muddy).  A limited supply of loaner field guides and binoculars will be available during each walk.  Feel free to ask for one if you don't have your own.  Experienced birders, naturalists, and outdoor enthusiasts are welcome to assist with wildlife/plant ID, teach others, or lead walks.  Call the Visitor Center at 305-872-0774 for more information, or to sign up as a volunteer.

Meet on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday
Noon-1p.m.
Keys Federal Credit Union, Peary Court, Key West.  Phone: [305] 295-7501 or 293-6024

Looking for a supportive club where you can improve yourself through regular speaking opportunities? Or a means to bolster your confidence? Or just interested in meeting new people: neighbors, associates or just for expanding business network connections?  Toastmasters International (non-profit) has a club nearby waiting for you to drop in.  These hour length meetings are beneficial to employers, employees, job applicants or just anyone looking for a new direction to dramatically improve speaking, presentation and leadership skills.  By building self-confidence through speech deliveries, you can become a competent communicator within each of your business and personal relationships.

Guests are always welcome! www.keywesttoastmasters.org

Middle Keys
Toastmasters

Open to new members who want to improve their leadership, listening, speaking, or sales skills. “As a member-led, self-improvement group with dues of less than $80 a year, this is a local opportunity to regularly improve professional skills,” said Nancy Lucas, club president.

Toastmasters meetings have 10-15 people who meet twice a month for an hour. Participants learn skills by filling a meeting role, ranging from giving a prepared speech or an impromptu one to serving as timer, evaluator or grammarian.  There is no instructor; instead, each speech and meeting is critiqued by a member in a positive manner, focusing on what was done right and what could be improved.

Middle Keys Toastmasters meets the second and fourth Tuesday of the month from 7:45 a.m. until 9 a.m. The first meeting of the month is held in Marathon at the Coldwell Banker Schmitt facilities. Please call to confirm if it is the conference room or the training center. The meeting on the fourth Tuesday is held in Islamorada at the Centennial Bank conference center.

Toastmasters International is a world leader in helping people become more competent and comfortable in front of an audience. The nonprofit organization has nearly 235,000 members in 11,700 clubs in 92 countries, offering a proven and enjoyable way to hone communication and leadership skills.

For questions, please contact 2008-2009 President Nancy Lucas at NancyLwrites@gmail.com or call (305) 393-6413.
