[Autumn] Sept. 1 marks the first day of Autumn. Yeah, I know, if you consult your calendar, it will say Fall starts on Sept. 22, the autumnal equinox. But that’s astronomical autumn, which is different from meteorological autumn. According to climate experts, the average temperatures in September are lower than August, so that means Sept. 1 is the actual start of the next season. Astronomers and meteorologists have been arguing about this forever.

[Keys Documentary] Journey through the history of the Keys and meet the people who live that history every day. Celebrate the uniquely colorful and often dramatic history of our nation’s southernmost subtropical isles. Beginning with the planting of the U.S. flag on Key West in March 1822, the documentary uncovers two centuries of booms and busts, shipwrecks and pirates, engineering feats, natural disasters, artistic and literary achievement, sport fishing, ecological conservation, and restoration and renewal. The film also explores the often overlooked history of Black contribution to the development of the Keys and the legacy of pioneers such as Sandy Cornish – a former slave who built Key West’s most successful farm in the 19th century and became a prominent civic leader. The hour-long program takes viewers on a historic journey to one of the most fascinating and exotic places in the country, discovering the people and events that make the Conch Republic unforgettably offbeat. An original South Florida PBS production. Video
[Labor Day] Created to honor American workers, Labor Day has morphed into one of the biggest shopping days of the year in which many—if not most—retail employees (you know, actual laborers) have to work. Here’s a thought: Would it kill corporate America to just take the day off?

The stifling weather finally broke on Monday when it fell below 90°. That was the first day of relief. Hopefully, there’s more to come!
[Church Shooter] “2d Amendment is outdated and is the problem and needs fixing.” Wrong! Is what needs fixing are the people who think a man pretending to be a girl is normal and vice versa.  Mental illness and the propagation of it within the liberal community needs to be fixed.
[Storm Surge] Frequently, people use the storm’s category to decide whether to evacuate. That’s incredibly dangerous because if they hear it’s only a tropical storm or Category 1, too often no alarm bells go off, and they see no cause for concern. Hurricane Katrina, which 20 years ago today slammed into New Orleans, is a good example. It was listed as a Category 3 storm based solely on wind speed, but the more than a thousand deaths and $125 billion in damage were mostly caused by storm surge. Link
[Fake Drunk] Only in Iowa could you be arrested for “simulated public intoxication.” On Aug. 18, Fayette County Sheriff’s deputies were called about individuals lying in a ditch around 5:30 a.m. Kalab Barker, 31, was the only one still around when officers arrived; he was arrested and charged with the dubious crime of pretending to be drunk.

[2nd Amendment] On Friday we read a posting here that blames the 2nd Amendment for the horrific, tragic, church shooting in Minneapolis.  That poster failed to mention the meteoric rise in crimes against churches and hate crimes with anti-religious motivation.  Such attacks have quintupled in recent years.  The reason?  Personally, I believe it is unrelenting ad hominem attacks on persons who hold religious beliefs or worship in virtually any faith.   News reports tell us that the shooter in this tragedy had a manifesto that railed against religious entities.  The problem is not the 2nd Amendment, it is the hate that is permeating our society.
The American Kestrel is North America’s smallest falcon—about the size of a Blue Jay—yet it carries all the agility and hunting skill of much larger raptors. Perched on a wire or hovering against the wind, kestrels keep a sharp eye on the ground below, striking swiftly at insects, rodents, and even small birds. Link
[Minnesota Shooter Sexually Confused] Could the murderer’s 2020 “gender transition” have made his problems worse? His own words suggest it’s possible. “I am tired of being trans, I wish I never brain-washed myself,” he reportedly wrote in his journal. “I regret being trans,” he added. Link
