[Comet Watch] Bring binoculars to pick the comet out of the twilight low in the west. (Don’t expect it to look this obvious!) The scene is drawn for about 40° north latitude, and the Moon is placed for a viewer near the middle of North America.

[Felines & Spinsters] I don’t begrudge depressed spinsters their right to one or seventy of these monstrosities, everyone needs some company. What I dislike is the distinct emotional need that cats fill for this specific type of woman. She hates the world, and the world isn’t so fond of her. She feels jilted, alone, antisocial and unwanted. If she could, she would urinate on strangers and scratch furniture she dislikes to tatters. She cannot do this in our society, so she gets an insufferable animal whom she can live vicariously through. “Yes, Winkers, you tear that man’s calf open. You tear it open for all the men who never called me back for a second date.”

I’m tired of getting scratched at and bitten, or even just looked at judgmentally by those stupid walking kitchen mops. They smell bad, they shed everywhere, and they contribute nothing to the overall ambiance of the house except maybe the feeling that someone is watching you with an air of detached superiority. They are shitty, shitty animals.

Not to mention the obvious, they shit in boxes in your house that linger for as long as you let them until you have to personally scoop them out and throw them away, a job that I thought would be the first we’d want to get rid of in a developed country.

No, some people are content to reserve a special moment of their day to sift out another animal’s feces and carry it down to a trash can. Or, like some cat owners, they could see that task for the abomination that it is and let the waste linger in a corner in their bathroom for about two weeks too long until the whole house has that delightful “cat smell” which is a nicer way of saying, “Your entire house smells like a port-a-potty on a construction site in a lower Key.”

logo13[“Don’t Be Evil”] Florida will receive about $395,000 out of  a nationwide $7 million settlement with the  search giant Google over its collection of personal information from unsecured wireless  networks.

Google revealed that antenna-equipped  company cars taking on-the-street photographs for its Street View service in Google  Maps also collected personal information  online from 2008-2010. That may have included addresses of viewed Web pages and full or  partial emails.

Google had better think about a new motto

[Trash] My impression from reading all of your comments that you are concerned about the environment here. If you are so concerned why is there so much trash floating around this island? I pick it up when I walk but I don’t live here year round.

Kitties are innocent creatures. The cat problem is caused by irresponsible people. I think more energy should be used to clean up Big Pine Key and save the cats not torture them. You can trap them and get them fixed and release them back into their territory. This will stop over population.

an spoon jump[Gun Control] Today I swung my front door open and placed my Remington 870 shotgun on the front porch. I gave it 6 shells, and noticing that it had no legs, I decided to place it in a wheelchair to help it get around. Then I left it alone and went about my business. While I was gone, the mailman delivered my mail, the boy across the street cut my grass, a girl walked her dog down the street, and quite a few cars stopped at the stop sign in front of my house.

After about 2 hours, I checked on the gun. And it was still sitting there in the wheelchair, right where I left it. It had not rolled itself outside and It had not killed anyone even in spite of the many opportunities that had been presented to it, and strangely enough, it had not even loaded itself.

Well you can imagine how surprised I was with all the media hype about how dangerous guns are and how they kill people. So either the media is wrong, and it is the misuse of guns by people or I’m in possession of the laziest Gun in the world.

So now I’m off to check on my spoons, because I hear they make people fat.

[“This is not enforceable in a court of law even if we signed a lease with this addendum”] Of course it’s enforceable. A lease is a contract. Don’t sign it if you don’t agree. That addendum is not usual anywhere, but you agreed to it, so man-up and abide by the contract. You’re the kind of renters all landlords hate. You sign a contract then bad-mouth the landlord because you signed it.

an_stars twinkleThe cause of the deadly flu epidemic of 1918 that killed 500 million people is still a mystery. That’s because it started around the world at the same time. As a matter of fact, it started in the United States on the same day that it started in India and this was long before air travel made spreading disease so likely.

One theory for the flu’s origin and universal spread is cosmic dust which showers the Earth daily. Some scientists surmise the dust contains organisms that are deadly to humans. Some scientists even theorize that life began from that same dust now that they’ve found the three building blocks of life on meteors.

Benefit for Kathy Simon Sunday, April 14
Hi, My name is Kathy Simon and I am a long time resident of Summerland Key and a server at Seven Fish.  I have been living my entire life with a genetic disease called Cystic Fibrosis. CF is a disease that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs, digestive tract, and other areas of the body. It is one of the most common chronic lung diseases in children and young adults. It is a life-threatening disorder.  Today, the average adult CF patient lives to the age of 37 and so far, I have beat the odds.  I am currently 47 years old.  Unfortunately, at this stage of my disease, I will soon need a double lung transplant to survive. jet13[Contrails Carry Clues to More Eco-Friendly Flights] Puffy white exhaust contrails stream from the engines of NASA’s DC-8 flying laboratory in this image taken from an HU-25 Falcon flying about 300 feet behind. NASA researchers have begun a series of flights using the agency’s DC-8 to study the effects of alternate biofuel on engine performance, emissions and aircraft-generated contrails at altitude.

The DC-8 is using conventional JP-8 jet fuel, or a 50-50 blend of JP-8 and an alternative fuel of hydroprocessed esters and fatty acids that comes from camelina plants. More than a dozen instruments mounted on the Falcon jet are characterizing the soot and gases streaming from the DC-8, monitoring the way exhaust plumes change in composition as they mix with air, and investigating the role emissions play in contrail formation.

Besides the ocean rising 8 inches for the last 23 years we have lived here. Over 15 ft now, Monroe County is granting building permits over the Internet for free so you don’t have to be hassled every time you want to fix something. FEMA and Citizens’ rates are being cut in half because we haven’t had a hurricane since Wilma and property taxes will be reduced and Federal income tax reduced because of no Saturday mail deliveries and other reductions in service. FTR and our President have something in common! FTR called himself white (well, half). Then I guess he must consider our President white.

Simply put, Obama’s objective is to make things better for all Americans. The Republican objective is to block him from doing it.
91% of Americans are in favor of universal gun control — 91%!

0% of Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee voted for it. They do not represent “of the people, by the people and for the people”. They are cowards who are more interested in their next election and the money they receive from the big conservative donors. Shame on them.

[Cash for Clunkers]  $2,850,000,000 paid out for 677,842 vehicles = $ 4,200 per vehicle!  Hello spending! $2.85 billion to save $2.80 billion is false economy. It also puts 677,842 vehicles in crowded junkyards.I’m not even going to try and figure how some lefty figured that 9 more mpg (allegedly) saved the 2.8 billion. I wonder what the next bottle of snake oil will “fix”.
The point was why should Romney get a tax credit for feeding his own animal? Your animal, you feed it. End of ridiculous conversation.
dog13FTR said: Another poster correctly pointed out that GWB also had a White House calligrapher and permitted White House tours of his home —  the people’s house. Unfortunately that poster is unable to differentiate between then and now. During the first 6 years of the GWB presidency, we had a vibrant and growing economy. Does the name Lucky and Rex ring any bells? I don’t think the economy then was vibrant either (the brutal recession of 1981-82. The national unemployment rate exceeded 10% throughout 1982, rendering more Americans jobless than at any time since the Great Depression. Not coincidentally, President Reagan’s public approval rating bottomed out at just 35% that same year). Ronny had dogs in the White House, didn’t he? And he had White House tours and  he had a calligrapher.

And your point is, FTR? None, he just whines.

[Voter Fraud] I’m sure she was an isolated incident. Ha. Link
By scanning many of the Republican postings on here one can easily sense that they are not the brightest lot. Yet when placed alongside the liberals they are absolute geniuses. Heaven help us all.
[Cash for Clunkers] You have to include the fuel needed to make each new car and the fuel used to destroy the old car to get a proper amount of fuel saved numbers. If you are that worried about the environment use super gas, it burns cleaner and you get more mpg. See how many environmentalist do that.
[Cash for Clunkers] Was disguised public manipulation to get a lot of the working poor, who suddenly got wealthier during the bubble economy, off the roads and back to being under thumb again.

The government knew poor people would fix their cars and make them run another decade, despite them not being quite as gas friendly to the environment, these people tend to be much more conservative and car pool, ride share and plan out their driving activities better to more than make up for the lower fuel economy. Never forget that it was our former President, Republican George W. Bush who was from the Right and his policies that got us into this deep recession that President Obama is bringing us out of in spite of those same Republicans who have been, and still are to this day, doing all they can to obstruct his efforts.

Obama’s term is up in 4 yrs, thats the good news. What scares me is the people who elected him will still be here. I hope common sense sets in by then.

Bury me on the lone prairie, but in the words of Brer Rabbit, roast me, hang me, but whatever you do, don’t throw me in the briar patch, or for that matter, anywhere contiguous with the skid marks in the potty left by FTR.

FROM THE RIGHT

right only grey

McClatchy Newspapers owns a passel of newspapers. They own the Miami Herald among about 30 or so other papers nationwide. They also publish a web news site, mcclatchydc.com. On that site yesterday, they published a real eye popper that reports on the results of a nationwide poll conducted by Marist in partnership with McClatchy. Their poll revealed that whatever political capital Mr. Obama acquired in the ’12 election, it’s gone, he squandered it.

an_arrow_down_burnHis approval rating has dropped to the lowest level in more than a year, with more voters now turning thumbs down on his performance than thumbs up. The measure of how much people like him also has dropped. Of course, he’s still more popular than Congress, but even that number is dropping.

In the event that you’re getting sick of Obama’s refusal to even consider cutting spending, you’re in good company.  The poll revealed that voters by a margin of 44/42 favor the Congress in its debt cutting efforts. Obama won the popular vote by about 51% just a few months ago. Now the poll reveals that now only 45% approve of the job he’s doing while 48% don’t approve.  Even his personal approval rating is headed south.  Back in December fully 53% had “favorable impressions” of him, today, only about 48% now hold that opinion.

Despite gains in jobs and the stock markets, voters think by 62-34 percent that the country is still in a recession. Just 22 percent think they’ll be better off in the coming year, while 41 percent think they’ll be about the same and 36 percent think they’ll be worse off.

lesbians13

Part 2) If you’ve ever wondered why some of us get our shorts in a bunch about federal spending, then the report that Team Obama’s National Institute of Health has spent over $1,500,000 on a study of grave national import just might grant you some insight. They spent the money trying to learn why lesbians are fat. Yep, the goal of the project was to determine why 3/4s of gay women are obese. The grant app said that they are attempting to learn why: “In stark contrast, among men, heterosexual males have nearly double the risk of obesity compared to gay males.” and gays tend not to be.” Who knows, maybe some enterprising CT reader will get a grant from the Feds to do a study on Jersey girls.  Money well spent, don’t you think?

an_budget-cut

Part 3) Obama is in violation of the law; he has still not submitted a budget. The law of our land requires that the President submit his budget by early February each and every year.  Obama has tinkled on the law for the last 4 years. Congress, for the first time in 92 years, Congress has actually started the process. That’s remarkable.  The Republican budget will balance our budget in only 10 years. A liberal Senator is proposing a competing budget. The author of that budget actually admits that it will never permit us to balance our budget.

 NO NAME ELECTRIC

[NNK Electric] Its taken a long time for Monroe citizens to realize that the county commissioners are on a roller coaster with no brakes, going downhill faster and faster. Who pays for their misguided leadership? Dumb question. From all corners of the county, people are coming out from under the ether, and lifting the commissioners’ loin cloths. They are finding little or nothing of which to be proud. Two have accepted they are riding a dead horse, bareback, and three don’t even know how to mount a horse.

Here is a paradox—The BOCC has, for years, argued that they have the ultimate authority to ride roughshod over citizens’ rights, spend taxpayers money for pseudo-legal folly, and though they have been found to be powerless, they are currently hiring outside legal counsel at great expense. They seem happy to let anyone they can hire take away the onus of backing down after years of protracted abuse on No Name Key. If they want to retain a semblance of their own integrity and authority, it would seem that they would wish to make the final decision themselves to grant permits to hook up to the grid, and other county infrastructure. That, my fellow citizens, would be fiscally responsible, and intellectually sound. They could end this fiasco tomorrow. They don’t have to play this out, and pay this out, while also selling their souls when they can do the right thing, rationalize their past actions in the name of seeking to justify their (irrelevant) comprehensive land use plan. Wishful thinking. Addicted smokers will continue to smoke, gamblers will gamble, and the BOCC misanthropes will continue to blow smoke while spending your money and mine like gamblers at a race track, and folks lined up at the Stop & Go cash register eager for yet another run at Lotto with money that should be going for groceries.
