[Price Gouging] This is the cost of 50’ of Romex house wire on Big Pine Key compared to Amazon.
Amazon $49
Overseas Lumber $83
Ace Hardware $69
A flagpole holder at Ace is $23, at Amazon $8. I don’t know how these local stores can stay in business with Amazon breathing down their necks. I thought this price gouging was going to stop on “day one”.
[AI Summary by Microsoft Copilot] AI, at the moment, is basically fake intelligence. It’s a very quick lookup, essentially a really clever lookup. It’s a plus, not saying it’s not an amazing technology. Just saying it’s a very capable technology.
The bottom tier of a banana bunch always has an even number and the tier above is odd. If someone tried to sneak off with just one, the farmer would know; to maintain the pattern, they would have to remove a banana from each row and that would be obvious.
[Trust No One] There was a petition I wanted to sign to stop Amazon and Etsy from selling Everglades Alcatraz support items. I stopped when the petition asked for personal info. They say the info is confidential but why should I believe them. Personal info is very valuable, and American greed is insatiable and they will sell it at some point plus flood me with junk mail or hackers will break in and suck my info.

[Brain] The pseudoscience suggestion that we only use ten per cent of our brain is a myth, but I believe research that says that of the hundred billion neurons we have, ninety-five per cent were firing unconsciously. Doesn’t that make you feel smart?
[Taxes] If people don’t think tariffs are a tax, they should go to the hardware store and check out the prices. I’m very glad not to be building a house. I’ll bet a new house will cost 30-40,000 dollars more!
[Everglades Fire] Blaze Scorches 1,600 Acres, Leaves Florida Homeowners on Edge. According to an NBC Miami article, Daniela Eusse was on a bike ride this morning and had trouble seeing and breathing.
“It was definitely hard to ride today,” she said. “It was very hard to breathe this morning, like I had to come off the ride. My heart was through the roof. It looked like fog, but you could smell it. It’s not fog, it’s fire.” Link

[A Lot Of Highs] The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Hamilton offloads more than 76,140 lbs of illegal narcotics at Port Everglades Monday, Aug. 25, 2025. This is the largest cocaine offload to date in Coast Guard history, with the assistance of partner agencies, during counterdrug operations in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Link
[When a Computer Bug Saved the Company] Fortune favors the buggy? Rarely, though, a bug can be beneficial. Back in 2002, a software bug saved Rogue Amoeba. Link
[Ketchup Was Once A Diarrhea Cure] in the late 16th century posited that cooked tomatoes, rather than raw ones, could be edible. By the mid-1700s, English doctors were not only embracing “love apples,” as tomatoes were called due to their reputedly aphrodisiac properties, but prescribing them as medicine, mostly to treat digestive and liver-related conditions Link
Will Smith’s concert crowds are real, but AI is blurring the lines. This minute-long clip of a Will Smith concert is blowing up online for all the wrong reasons, with people accusing him of using AI to generate fake crowds filled with fake fans carrying fake signs. Video

[Mail] Australia Post halts most parcel postage to US as tariff chaos hits global carriers. Australia Post has suspended most postage to the US ahead of new tariffs on low-value parcels, with businesses wanting to ship to American customers now unable to use the government-owned carrier. Some online retailers had pre-empted issues with sending goods to the US and stopped shipping there in recent weeks, as global postal services described “chaos”.
From Friday, August 29, parcels valued under $US800 ($1,230) imported into the US will attract tariffs or flat fees. Link
