| The suffering caused by tuberculosis in the nineteenth century is almost unimaginable. By the beginning of that century, tuberculosis had already killed nearly 15 per cent of all the people who had ever lived in the United States and Europe. By the end of that century, 80 percent of the population would be infected with a bacillus that had an 80 percent rate of mortality. |
[China Clippers] In Liverpool the point of viewing was black with spectators awaiting the arrival of this incredible racer who had knocked 3 weeks off an Atlantic crossing in his 200’ Extreme Clipper ship to set a new world record. 3 weeks off what was typically a thirty-day crossing. Anything under three weeks eastbound transatlantic was impressive. To cross in thirteen days was a marvel. Many thought he cheated and his ship’s log was examined.
When no pilot boat would brave the heavy fog to tow the Red Jacket the last leg into port, in a feat that combined seamanship and showmanship, Captain Elridge not only docked the majestic clipper under sail but backed her in to her berth under sail to thunderous applause at the docks, so as not to lose the speed record. |
[Saw Grass] I found this bit of twisted sawgrass interesting because it was so uniform. Usually, the bucks twist it with their antlers but it’s very messy. They do the same with palmetto leaves and totally destroy the frond. |

| [Riotous Death] When André Ricciardi found out he had cancer, he asked a friend to film his final years. André Is an Idiot, the result, mixes in stop-motion puppetry to create an astonishing record of an extraordinary life. It was a little scary at times’: the hilarious, heartbreaking film about one man’s riotous death. Link |

| [Passionate Deaf Signer] Gov Waltz’ press conference after the most recent ICE-Border Patrol killing of an American was made watchable just because of the deaf people signer standing off to the left. She was so cool. Jumping around, reaching for the sky, stooping and her facial expressions were the best. Video |

[AI Risks] Many people have been thinking in an analytic and sober way about AI risks for many years, but it’s my impression that during the peak of worries about AI risk in 2023–2024, some of the least sensible voices rose to the top, often through sensationalistic social media accounts. These voices used off-putting language reminiscent of religion or science fiction, and called for extreme actions without having the evidence that would justify them. It was clear even then that a backlash was inevitable, and that the issue would become culturally polarized and therefore gridlocked. Link |

[Panic of 1837] The late 18305 and early 1840s were years of economic turmoil and devastation for many American families. The collapse of speculative bubbles in land and in southern cotton prices sent the United States spiraling into a financial panic in 1837. The fallout was an economic depression that would last, off and on, until the mid-1840s and was only completely reversed with the discovery of gold in California at the end of the decade. |
