Over the course of my life the popular Coconut Telegraph has provided us with an opportunity to build awareness and create events for our beloved community, which recognized and honored the devoted service and sacrifice made by our Nation’s Veterans.

Unable to adequately process my combat wounds, along with witnessing horrible injuries and death suffered by my fellow United States Marines, I sought escape and an opportunity to heal upon returning home. Clawing my way back towards some semblance of normalcy, via the love, kindness and medical dedication of others, I moved beyond the grasp of the madness that had once consumed me.

Your fine publication, along with the magnificent support given by our Veterans and the many bedrock institutions and organizations that sustain our lives and culture; have been the driving forces behind birthing and maintaining the longstanding tenure of Monroe County’s many Veterans Day and Memorial Day programs.

Collectively, we’ve illuminated the inordinate trauma endured by our returning Veterans as their suffering is finally being recognized and addressed. Twenty-two (22) Veterans a day had been committing suicide. Untreated, they were driven to commit this ultimate act of self-destruction each day, every day. Their suicide rates have decreased by 18%.

The unified enthusiasm and gratitude generated across the board by the depths of the patriotic fervor residing within our Florida Keys’ citizens, established a foundational blueprint upon which we were able to create events that honor and remember the sacrifices endured by our Nation’s Veterans.

After a lifetime of service in many venues, I’m stepping down from my present duties as an organizer and host for our current Veterans Day and Memorial Day programs. Before I depart, please know how exceedingly close and dear to my heart, I will forever hold each one of you. I shall always remember and never forget the loving kindness and unrelenting beauty that you generously displayed and shared with our Nation’s Veterans.
Blessings & Respect Always, John Donnelly (Purple Heart Recipient)

[Zombie Apocalypse] I watch so many zombie movies to divert my mind from world politics that I’ve become an authority. As I watch zombie movies, I imagine what I would do to survive the zombie apocalypse. I used to think that a cruise ship just offshore would be the best refuge. Cruise ships are whole cities, just add people. But I also have a better idea. Make the lumber yards secure refuges. They have everything you could need –just add people. Use all that lumber and equipment to build 8’ plywood walls around the lumberyards to defend the inside area. As more people seek refuge, they could expand the walls to include other stores and improve defenses.  Most folks don’t realize that Key West’s Home Depot and Marathon’s Home Depot are both built on the water and at great locations. A channel could be dredged to get from the refuge centers to ships in deeper water. One ship could be used for anti-social arseholes and bad guys, and another could be used as an abattoir.

As for defenses, I could tell you how to do that too, I just got promoted to ‘Netflix streaming general’. I’ve become a pretend authority from all the war movies I watch, but I’ll just write about things I learned from zombie movies. Just remember to only shoot zombies in the head and don’t let them bite you.

[Cheeseburger Attack] Former strip club employee Jordan Cotto, 26, arrived at Atlantis Gentlemen’s Club in Tampa, Florida, on Oct. 10, hoping to “speak with management.” Instead, he got involved in a verbal argument and grabbed a cheeseburger from his car which he hurled at a male victim. The victim was unharmed, but police spoke with Cotto, who said he “did throw a cheeseburger from his vehicle” and “would do it again.” Cotto was arrested for battery and eventually released on his own recognizance. Sounds like someone is in desperate need of a “Happy Meal”.

[Whole Earth Catalog’s Stewart Brand] A celebrity hippie is selling the Bay Area houseboat he spent decades living in for an eye-watering $1.8 million. Stewart Brand, 87, lived aboard the stunning tugboat, named Mirene, for more than four decades with his wife before making the decision to sell. Brand co-founded the Whole Earth Catalog, an American counterculture magazine and catalog that featured product reviews, ‘ideas and inspiration that Steve Jobs later called “a sort of Google in paperback form, before Google came along. Brand and his wife fondly looked back on their time living in one-bedroom, one-bathroom boat docked in Sausalito, likening it to an ‘exquisitely crafted musical instrument. Vultures have long been scorned and sometimes feared as scavengers that feed on the dead. Indeed, they have an unnerving knack for rapidly amassing at the site of a carcass. In ancient Greece, the birds were considered bad luck, and according to Persian lore, a pair of vultures guard the gates of Hell.
