[Scam Of The Week] An 80-year-old woman from Sapporo, Japan, is the latest victim of an online “astronaut”. The man met the octogenarian on social media and claimed to be aboard a spaceship orbiting Earth. He went on to convince her that his ship was “under attack” and he was running out of oxygen — which could only be remedied by the transfer of 1 million yen to his bank account so he could buy more. Investigators said her communications with the fake spaceman showed she had developed “romantic feelings” for him. |

[Chatbot Hallucinations] My goal is simple: I want to know how strongly the chatbot hallucinates. Why do language models sometimes just make things up? We’ve all experienced it: you ask a question, get a confident-sounding answer—and it’s wrong, but it sounds convincing. Even when you know the answer is false, the model insists on it. To this day, this problem can be reduced but not eliminated. Link |

Germicidal ultraviolet could make airborne diseases as rare as those carried by water. Just as filtration and chlorination made drinking water safe at scale, we now have the tools to do the same for indoor air: ventilation, high-quality filters, and germicidal light. A century ago, germicidal light at 254 nanometers seemed to be a promising way of controlling pathogens by killing them in the air, but it turned out to cause irritation and cancer in the skin, and it was largely dropped when antibiotics became widespread.
