[Crappy Keys Healthcare] My recent trigeminal neuralgia has returned. I recently had to rush to the Emergency Room in Marathon where I got a RX for gabapentin which has worked like magic. Since Wed. Feb 14 I have been trying (without any luck so far) to get in touch with some kind of doctor, because for some inexplicable reason, even after I told him Dr. Dr Dell’Api’s office said he was incommunicado, the ER doctor only wrote the Rx for 30 days, and the earliest I was able to get an appt with Dr. Dell’Api, in order to (hopefully) extend the Rx, is a couple of weeks after I run out of the pills. So I tried to contact the new doctor here on Big Pine, Dr Greg Keifer, to get an appointment, but his office has not returned my email request for an appointment within the 2 days that his web site said it would. As of now, I have been unable to contact either doctor!
P.S. In case you didn’t know, Dr. Grider has retired. As you probably do know, many people have had to move out of the Keys because medical care is often inadequate or unavailable (We still don’t have a pulmonary doctor). Today, I guess I’ll have to try doctors in Marathon. I wouldn’t have wanted to drive if I didn’t have to, but it’s looking like I might have no other option.

[Teenie Weenie] A ridiculous AI-generated rat penis made it into a peer-reviewed journal. Researchers used Midjourney’s AI image generators to illustrate the fantastical rodent beside incoherent strings of text. Link
[RIP Common Sense] Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: Knowing when to come in out of the rain; Why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn’t always fair; And maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don’t spend more than you earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Link

Oh dem Golden Slippers, Oh dem Golden Slippers,  if I remember that song.

My wife and I got stuck in an elevator and when we got home we told our kids. They asked, “Sooo…did you get out?”
We decided that day to go ahead and start drinking away their college fund.
[Mourning Doves] I read that Mourning Doves only coo when their mate dies. I disagree. They most often coo in the spring, at sunrise. Our trees are full of doves cooing. They can’t all be widows and widowers. Also, I think they are misnamed. It should be “Morning” dove not “Mourning” because they usually only come around mornings and are not always in mourning.
[Wanted 2 Bedroom] My wife and I are looking for 2 bedrooms. Hers in Arizona, mine in Big Pine Key.

[Cowboy Boots] I was in L.A. at a little corner Mexican store filled with all kinds of things you just don’t see in the Keys. These boots were just too cool, but just too hot for the Keys and I’d have to get a horse.
[Dead Coral] Researchers document significant coral death in Florida Keys. A team of researchers, who have just returned from an extensive coral survey cruise, documented significant coral mortality in the Florida Keys at restoration sites from this past summer’s heatwave. Link

Remember this gorilla? It used to be up the Keys at MM 54 for many years. Is it still there?

Two tragic Keys boat crashes, two vastly different charges. FWC denies special treatment. Both boats were packed with passengers. Both struck fixed channel markers at high speed. Both collisions left one person dead and others injured. And both were investigated by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers. Two shattering boat crashes, more than a year and 100 miles apart in South Florida, share compelling similarities. But the resulting investigations produced dramatically different criminal charges. [1519 Mexico City] “The conquistadors passed an anxious night, listening to the noisy preparations of the Aztecs for battle, and in consulting vainly to discover some escape. At dawn, a hand-to-hand fight was fiercely waged, the Indians showing no fear of firearms, and driving the retreating Spaniards into the sea. Fifty Spaniards were killed, and one, Alonzo Bote, and a Portuguese, were captured alive. Bernal Diaz says that every soldier, but one had from one to four wounds, for which the only dressing was fat taken from the dead Indians; he himself had three wounds and Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba had twelve wounds.”

[Stonelifting Etiquette] Stonelifting is unlike most other physical activities. And although stonelifting has gotten more popular over recent years, it’s still very niche. Therefore, many people don’t know the general stonelifting etiquette or even that there’s etiquette at all. Link … proving there’s a website for everything,
