Hi Commissioners,
I’m writing as a concerned resident and taxpayer. Please do not award the water-quality monitoring contract to Mote Marine. Mote has a direct financial relationship with Pier B and Mark Walsh. That’s a blatant conflict of interest—there’s no way they can be objective while being paid by the very people contributing to the pollution. This isn’t about politics, it’s about transparency, ethics, and protecting Key West’s water. We need an independent organization with zero ties to Pier B. Anything less is just a rigged game and the community knows it. Please do the right thing. Vote no.
Best Regards,
Lee Lapid
[Mini Lobster Season] This year the mini season falls on July 30th and 31st, this Wednesday and Thursday. It’s estimated that 30,000 people will descend on the Keys looking for the clawless bugs. (30,000 tourist wreaking havoc on the coral and sea floor.) Link
[Black Hole] A hole completely full of spiders is black.
Earth Has Tilted 31.5 Inches. That shouldn’t happen. Can we fix it back? When humans pump groundwater, it has a substantial impact on the tilt of Earth’s rotation. Link
[Heartworms] Do cats really need heartworm medicine if they’ve never set foot outside the house? Do any of you know of a cat who succumbed to heartworms?
[Overdoing It] Can I just read one book or watch one movie where the parents or wife didn’t die in a car wreck?
[Reflections] I don’t know if I want to go on a round the World flight for a year. Remember the old days? PBA Airline, aka, Pelicans, Buzzards and Albatross. Loved flying in, or was it on the DC 3? People would park their Key’s Cruisers in the airport parking lot till next “season”. Sure was a different place, as are all other great memories that end up in the dust bin of history. Still looking for me ol’ dusters. Or was that Long John Baldry w/his ol’ ‘at full of pennies. “Don’t try to lay no boogie-woogie on the king of rock and roll. Don’t know where all that came from but it’s out now. Whew!

[The Party Gene] Ozzy Osbourne wasn’t just a music god—his legendary DNA helped science evolve. The rock and roll legend’s genome showed he was genetically predisposed to hard partying. “…you’ve said it yourself: you’re a medical miracle. You went on a drink-and-drugs bender for 40 years. You broke your neck on a quad bike. You died twice in a chemically induced coma. You walked away from your tour bus without a scratch after it was hit by a plane. Your immune system was so compromised by your lifestyle, you got a positive HIV test for 24 hours, until they proved it was wrong. Yet here you are, alive and doing well.” Until you died. Link
[Puritans – The Killjoys of History] The Puritans were a group behind the religious ideology known as “Puritanism”, a type of early modern Reformed Protestantism that was born within the Church of England. They started as a movement for religious reform in the late-16th century and lasted until the late-17th century in England and around the 1730s in North America.
[Fox Guarding Henhouse] Here’s the problem: Mote Marine has a direct financial interest in the Pier B Cruiseport and ongoing financial ties to Pier B’s owner, Mark Walsh. You can’t claim to monitor water quality objectively while being financially entangled with the cruise port that directly contributes to the pollution. That’s a textbook conflict of interest—and it’s unethical. Key West deserves transparency, clean water, and independent oversight—not rigged contracts and backroom alliances.
Show up. Speak out. Wednesday at 5PM at the City Commission Chambers.

Why did Mote Marine apply for the water monitoring contract in Key West? Because nothing says trustworthy science like getting paid by the polluter you’re supposed to report on.

[Apple Juice] Should you drink apple juice every day? One 8-ounce glass of apple juice contains about 27 grams of sugar, which is comparable to the amount of sugar you’d get drinking the same quantity of soda. And unlike whole apples, apple juice lacks the fiber to slow glucose absorption. This can cause a quick spike in blood sugar, which is especially concerning for people with prediabetes, diabetes or insulin resistance. Apple juice is the go-to drink for mothers with babies because all that sugar quiets their cravings. Bad, bad, bad.

[Jimmy Buffett Event] Fans of the late singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett can celebrate his legacy over Labor Day Weekend in Key West, his former home and the island that inspired his most enduring songs, during the immersive Just a Few Friends festival. Set for Aug. 29 through Sept. 1, the gathering is part memorial, part music festival, and a unique opportunity to experience the place where Buffett developed his famed “trop-rock” sound. Link

The Midwest has some of the crappiest architecture in America. Rural towns all have the ugliest 20th century brick buildings devoid of architectural details, just square blocks. Picture any Midwest town with its two- or three-story brick buildings along Main Street with diagonal parking in front. Yuk, how depressing!
