[Prescribed Burns] Last Friday’s Coconut Telegraph had a post with some erroneous information concerning prescribed burns. Big Pine Key has had prescribed burns conducted by USFWS since the 1970s. Back then they were conducted to maintain pine rockland habitat. They were small and cancelled if conditions were too dry. In the early part of this century the Key Deer Refuge started to clear land to accommodate the vehicles used to burn. Starting 2015 the refuge cleared vast areas of critical habitat to make it easier. More than 180 acres of native vegetation have been bulldozed or cleared with forestry mulchers. The entire North West sector of the Key Deer Refuge was carelessly burned on September 15, 2011, destroying a 4000 year old pine forest forever. A habitat with 65 species of plants was changed into wasteland with 95% of the pines gone and the number of species reduced to a quarter. The writer of the post said fires “promote emergence of native plants”. There is always going to be resprouts of grass and some vegetation, but on Big Pine Key fires have eliminated many species. Vanilla barbalata , the endangered vanilla orchid is one of many plants that have suffered catastrophic loses. Prescribed fire in 2005 completely eliminated the pine ecosystem on Cudjoe Key. ~’Burned areas provide habitat”, on Big Pine Key, virtually all areas burned by the refuge are examples of highly degraded or cleared habitat. ~”Burns help curb invasive species”, no, they open areas to rapid invasion by Brazilian pepper and other invasives. They have completely changed the species composition of most areas. ~Burns, “minimize the spread of pests and disease”. The unannounced prescribed burns cause respiratory problems for residents, so the toxic smoke causes health problems for residents. Prescribed burns by the Key Deer Refuge on Big Pine Key and Cudjoe have caused the deaths of thousands of box turtles and other reptiles. The prescribed burns here are simply causing the rapid elimination of the pine habitat. They are speeding the decline caused by sea level rise. The only thing benefiting from them are the people that make money from them. |

[Itchy Skin] Oatmeal paste for rash or itchy skin. Many people swear by oatmeal as a way of relieving itchy, irritated skin. It’s thought that adding ground oatmeal to your bathwater can help with this, but if you have a skin rash that’s focused on one area, a quick and easy oatmeal paste will help you out. The key chemical ingredient here is avenanthramides, which are known to have anti-inflammatory properties. In addition to helping the swelling go down, oatmeal will also soothe any itching or irritation you have. 1 bowl of organic, steel-cut oatmeal and warm water Add the water to your bowl of oatmeal and mix together until you have a thick paste. Apply the paste gently to the affected areas. Allow it to dry. Remove gently and apply moisturizer to your skin. |

[Privacy] Homeowners who don’t want to advertise the details of their property can blur their homes on Google Street View. “Would-be thieves certainly want to scout their locations before they hit them,” said Christopher Herrmann, a professor of law and police science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Criminals might look for security barriers, front-door cameras or exterior surveillance systems. But, he warned, “It may be more of a red flag,” alerting thieves that there is something worth stealing. “We make it easy for anyone to blur their home if they prefer,” said a Google spokesperson. “Just click on the ‘Report a Problem’ button and submit a request.” |

[Why Men Shouldn’t Write Advice Columns] Dear John, I hope you can help me. The other day. I set off for work. leaving my husband in the house watching TV. My car stalled. and then it broke down about a mile down the road and l had to walk back to get my husband’s help. When I got home, I couldn’t believe my eyes. He was in our bedroom with the neighbor’s daughter! I am 32, my husband is 34 and the neighbor’s daughter is I9. We have been married for I0 years. When I confronted him, he broke down and admitted they had been having an affair for the past six months. He won’t go to counseling, and l’m afraid, I am a wreck and need advice urgently. Can you please help? Sincerely, Sheila
Dear Sheila, A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the injectors. I hope this helps, John |

[US1 Blocked] Florida Keys highway blocked after sewer line break. Labor Day traffic at standstill. Labor Day traffic in the Florida Keys came to a halt Monday afternoon because of a busted sewer line underneath U.S. 1, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. Shortly after 4 p.m., the line broke around mile marker 92 in the Upper Keys area of Tavernier, the sheriff’s office said in an alert. The pipe sends sewage from the Village of Islamorada to a treatment facility run by the Key Largo Wastewater Treatment District at mile marker 100.3. U.S. 1 is the only main road that travels through the Florida Keys. Any accident or other incident on the highway snarls traffic throughout the island chain, particularly on busy holidays, like Labor Day weekend. |
