[Smell-O-Vision] In 1960, movie theaters tried Smell-O-Vision. It stunk. The short-lived experiment pumped scents into cinemas. This space-age tech wound up gassing moviegoers with brandy and gunpowder odors before flopping so hard its lone user called it “a complete disaster.” Link
[Downsizing Cars] More premium car buyers are trading down to mainstream brands, where they’ve discovered they can get a lot of the same technology, comfort and refined features at a substantially lower price, according to new JD Power research. 32% of consumers replacing a premium SUV defected to a mainstream brand, paying an average of $51,500 vs. $70,600 for the luxury model they moved on from. Defection is highest among Gen Y and Gen Z, and households earning less than $100,000. A big reason is that you can get many of the same tech and convenience features once associated only with luxury cars in a Chevy, Toyota or Hyundai

Read about the pirates, storms, and wars I witnessed firsthand. Read about the relationship between a solo sailor and the sea, his daily companion. Read how I changed — from fearing to leave shore, to wanting never to touch land again. Link

[Google’s Dominance Fading] Recently, sunset chasers have been missing the main event because Google’s new AI summaries started inventing times. “I had the projector set up outside and was waiting for the sun to set,” wrote one Facebook user in Colorado Springs, “but to my surprise I was simply living in the past. AI informed me the sunset had already happened.” These episodes point to something many have noticed: the world’s dominant search engine now struggles over basic facts. The company that built its reputation returning the right answer has, as one tech expert observed, “lost its edge.” Link

You Might Be A Redneck if you… In his quest to retrieve a bottle of Mountain Dew, a Kansas City, Missouri, man fell into a portable restroom toilet tank and was stuck there for eight hours — with the lid closed! before being rescued. A driver with Patriot Portable Restrooms was trying to collect the structures that had been set up for a World Cup watch party when he encountered the trapped occupant. The driver flagged down a nearby police officer, who helped him unlock the door. When we opened the door and didn’t see anybody, we honestly thought we were talking to a ghost, and then his head popped up out of the tank like a game of whack-a-mole, or Oscar the Grouch coming out of his can. KCFD had to cut the man out of the toilet and then blasted him with the fire hose to rinse him off. In the portable restroom business, you kind of expect the unexpected. But in six years, I never thought I’d find someone alive inside one of our units.
