[Fried Chicken] I want to complement the staff at the Winn Dixie delicatessen. At about 10:45 am my wife and I bought fried chicken there. It was some of the best fried chicken we have had. I used to think Dion’s was the best, but no longer. The workers did an outstanding job, and I thank them.
[What owning a cat does to your brain (and theirs)] Cats may have a reputation for independence, but emerging research suggests we share a unique connection with them – fueled by brain chemistry. The main chemical involved is oxytocin, often called the love hormone. It’s the same neurochemical that surges when a mother cradles her baby or when friends hug, fostering trust and affection. And now studies are showing oxytocin is important for cat-human bonding too. Link
[How to Get Rid of Tiny Ants] 50/50 mix of baking soda and powdered sugar, put a jam jar with a little jam in the bottom then add water and stir. leave in corner of sink. That should attract them and they will drown, Peppermint essential oil rubbed on the area will get rid of tiny ants, mix equal parts of vinegar and water and spray it on surfaces where you see ants. This disrupts their scent trails, Diatomaceous Earth: Sprinkle food-grade diatomaceous earth in areas where ants are active. This is a natural insecticide that dehydrates and kills ants. Link

It’s dragonfly migration season! With a 4-inch wing span, some green darners can migrate more than 80 miles per day, with some traveling from Canada all the way to Mexico. I’m told they eat their weight in mosquitoes every hour. Link

[Cracked Screen] I have a phone with a broken screen and the manufacturer’s website won’t let me complete the repair order. Is there anyone left in the Keys who fixes phones? All the places online want me to bring it to them, but they are all in Miami or so.
[Don’t Piss-off God] The first point, above all others, is that earnestly and with all your faith and power, you guard against doing, saying, or thinking anything that will anger God. Never allow the subtle temptations of the world, the flesh, or the Devil to seize you. So that you live more chastely and guard yourself from sin, remember as Augustine says that you cannot be sure of a single hour. Your wretched body will die, decay, and be eaten by worms, leaving your poor soul alone to face the consequences.   ~Anne of France, Lessons for My Daughter 1517

[The Plastic Trap] The industry has convinced us that recycling will reverse the toxic impact of plastic—while it keeps right on polluting. Every solution that has been proposed and adopted to keep plastics from contaminating our terrestrial and marine environments has failed spectacularly and the problems going to get worse.  Industry is positioned to produce vastly greater amounts of plastic in years to come. In 2019 plastic producers reported creating about 368 million metric tons of plastic. That number is expected to surge to 1.5 billion metric tons per year by 2050 as petrochemical infrastructure expands globally. Link

[No Fix For Stupid] Dating such stupid people I had to wonder how they survived to adulthood. He laughed when I said the Sun was a star. Link
[Big Mouth Snake] Burmese pythons stretch their mouths even wider than we thought possible. Watching an invasive apex predator swallow a full-sized deer in front of you is something that you will never forget. Link
[Captain Doom and Gloom] Look at this link and others, then realize how and why some of today’s kids are killers, have hate for others, and love war.  We live in a very sick world and if any aliens have any brains, they would skip this stop for sure. What’s on your TV tonight? Link
[Cyber Attack Steps to Take] National Security Agency (yes, that NSA) just put out a blunt warning about something you may have seen on your phone before. Pop-ups screaming: “Your phone is hacked!” or “Virus detected!” Whether you’re using an iPhone or Android, the NSA says to assume any sketchy pop-up is malicious. And their advice? Not “Click here to Learn more ” Not even “Close the window.“
They’re saying: “Forcibly close all applications.” In other words: Don’t just close the bad tab, shut down everything. Think of it like pulling the emergency brake. Closing all your apps at once can stop malicious code that’s trying to sneak into your system in the background.

[Covid Boosters OK’d] Want a COVID-19 booster shot? It should now be easier to get one in Florida than it was a week ago. Walgreens and Publix pharmacies say they will now offer the shots, joining CVS, which had done so previously, only with doctors’ prescriptions. Two events in the past few days have come together to clear up this confusion, with one small technicality yet to be resolved.
Late last week, an advisory panel on vaccines for the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), while refusing to actually recommend COVID-19 boosters, voted to allow people to get the shots without a doctor’s prescription.
The Florida Board of Pharmacy met yesterday and endorsed that decision in a brief, 15-minute meeting.
Shortly thereafter, major pharmacy chains announced they had the shots in stock and are prepared to give them to patients.

[Stupid Is as Stupid Does] With intelligence being a rival to stupidity, there is no question that artificial intelligence cannot compete or match. While Al possesses impressive power and inherent capabilities, it falls powerless in front of the inborn and innate foolishness that is stupidity. No matter how advanced and sophisticated technology may become, it simply cannot surpass the limitless levels of stupidity that is natural.

[Gays] As someone who watches 3 or 4 streaming movies a day, I’ve noticed lately that there are hardly any more transgender or gay people. Before the President’s crackdown on gays, just about every other show had a tranny, mixed racial couple, or gay people. It was totally out of proportion to the number of gays on the planet (unless I’m missing out on something). Not any longer. All of a sudden everyone’s straight. The pendulum swings…
[Spies Among Us] Florida creates online portal to turn in your neighbors. Does that sound creepy? Yeah, it has an ugly history dating back to Nazi Germany, Romanov Russia, and the Spanish Inquisition. They didn’t have the internet, but they were all horrible people.
[Greed] September 23rd. It looks like Lowe’s is going to bypass Thanksgiving all together this year in Upstate South Carolina and go right in to Christmas sales.
[Reef Stewards] United Way of Collier and the Keys (UWCK) is now accepting applications for the 2025-2026 Marine Science Education Grant program, with the deadline quickly approaching on September 30, 2025. UWCK is asking the community to help spread the word so eligible schools and organizations don’t miss this opportunity. This initiative supports hands-on marine science and conservation learning experiences for students across Monroe County, creating the next generation of reef stewards. Link
