I am writing this to compliment Mia at All Aspects Inspection Services. I needed a permit to replace the siding on my home. She took care of all the necessary details and got my permit issued in less than three weeks. I have lived in the Keys for over 45 years and know quite well that me getting a permit is the hardest part of a project. Mia, you made my month, thank you. |
| [Lauderdale County?] Broward County toyed with a brand makeover — and then it didn’t, which is a bummer. Broward, to most people, means nothing. It’s home to Fort Lauderdale. And everybody knows where Fort Lauderdale is. Link |
Deer Abby,I’m looking for some local guidance. What are your go-to, reasonably priced, stores in Big Pine Key and Marathon for everyday stuff. I’m trying to avoid overpriced tourist spots and just want solid places the locals actually use. Any recommendations for groceries, hardware, home goods, or basics would be appreciated. Deer Seeker, |

[Top Gun Jet Fighters] Tuesday around 3 in the afternoon I was deafened by powerful jet engines — louder than anything. When I went outside to look, I saw a super jet warplane (I think it was an F-35) going at full speed at low altitude above my house. He then made a big U-turn South back towards NAS Boca Chica. I had goose bumps from so much excitement, and lo and behold, just as I was in patriotic ecstasy, another F-35 that was on his tail flashed by and made the same explosive turn. Oh, how exciting. A break from the quiet afternoon on Big Pine Key where nothing ever happens. Thank you, Navy! |
| [Friday Joke] Babe Ruth became the first baseball player to sign a contract giving him a salary of $100,000 a year. A reporter asked him “how do you feel making so much money, even more than the President of the United States? “Ruth replied “Well I had a better year than he did.” |

[Hummus] The smell of hummus exerts a physiological effect on humans. Breathing in the scent of Mother Earth stimulates the release of the hormone oxytocin, the same chemical that promotes bonding between mother and child, be- tween lovers (not to be confused with Hamas). |
| [“Freedom of Religion”] Gov. Greg Abbott seeks to ban two Muslim groups and their members from owning land in Texas. A similar law in Florida is making its way through the courts. A three-judge panel on the 11th 11th Circuit Court of Appeals is allowing the state to enforce its ban. Link |

| [Friday Joke] Three nurses died and went to heaven, where they were met at the Pearly Gates by St. Peter. To the first, he asked, “What did you do on Earth and why should you go to heaven?” “I was a nurse in an inner-city hospital,” she replied. “Very noble,” said St. Peter. “You may enter.” To the next, he asked the same question: “So what did you do on Earth?” “I was a nurse at a missionary hospital in Africa,” she replied. “How touching,” said St. Peter. “You, too, may enter.” He then came to the last nurse, to whom he asked, “So, what did you do back on Earth?” After some hesitation, she explained, “I was just a nurse at an HMO.” St. Peter pondered this for a moment, and then said, “Okay, you may enter also.” “Whew!” said the nurse. “For a moment there, I thought you weren’t going to let me in.” “Oh, you can come in,” said St. Peter, “but you can only stay for three days.” |

The Wendigo stories reinforced the taboo against cannibalism, when the madness of hunger and isolation rustled at the edge of winter lodges. Succumbing to such a repulsive urge doomed the gnawer of bones to wander as a Wendigo for the rest of time. It is said that Wendigo will never enter the spirit world but will suffer the eternal pain of need, its essence a hunger that will never be sated. The more a Wendigo eats, the more ravenous it becomes. It shrieks with its craving, its mind a torture of unmet want. |

[Bags Under Eyes] Why we get dark circles and eye bags. One’s temporary, the other is often built in. When there is darkness in the under-eye region, it can convey unintended psychological states or emotions or physical states, such as being tired, being sick, being sleepy and uninterested, or having serious medical conditions, like cancer or liver diseases. | [Bees Tell Time] Scientists now know that bees can process time, a first in insects. Bumblebees can process the duration of flashes of light and use the information to decide where to look for food. This is the first evidence of such an ability in insects. Link |
Miami Beach’s newest park, built on the site of a long-shuttered par 3 golf course, offers many of the typical attractions — tennis courts, places to commune with nature, walk the dogs or play with the kids. Bayshore Park, with 19.4 acres of open space, is designed to use the park’s lake as stormwater retention for the neighborhood’s watershed, thereby reducing demand on the island’s “gray” infrastructure while improving water quality through natural filtration. The lake will also contribute to habitat biodiversity within the urban environment while meeting the recreational needs of the Miami Beach community. Link |
| [Over-Regulation is Doubling Cost] After building a software company to a multi-billion dollar exit, I made the jump to hardware. Now I’m working on carbon removal + steel at Charm Industrial, and electric long-haul trucking with Revoy. It’s epically fun to be building in the real world, but little did I expect that more than half the cost of building a hardware company would come from regulatory bottlenecks. Despite a huge push for climate fixes and the bipartisan geopolitical desire to bring industry back to the USA, I’ve been shocked to find that the single biggest barrier—by far—is over-regulation from the massive depth of bureaucracy. [New Wolf Snake Honors The Late Steve Irwin] Conservationists have discovered a previously unknown species of snake, slithering around one of Earth’s most unique environments. In naming their new reptile, researchers decided to honor one of popular culture’s most unique and beloved wildlife educators: the late, great Steve Irwin. The snake was discovered in the Nicobar Islands. Located in the Bay of Bengal near mainland India the archipelago is home to a wide range of species not found anywhere else in the world. Link |

[Lies] Repeat a lie enough and it becomes true. At first, the lie might seem impossible. After hearing it twice, you think it might be possible. By the third time, you’re convinced it’s true. And by the fourth, you might even want it to be true. And it’s not just humans. Artificial intelligence is just as susceptible to confirmation bias. |
| [Friday Joke] Tim decided to tie the knot with his long-time girlfriend. One evening, after the honeymoon, he was out in the garage organizing his golfing equipment. His wife came to the door and after a long period of silence, she said, “Tim, I’ve been thinking, now that we’re married, maybe it’s time you quit golfing. You spend so much time on the course. I’m sure you could probably get a good price for your clubs.” Tim got a horrified look on his face. His wife said, “Darling, what’s wrong?” Tim shook his head and said, “For a minute there, you started to sound like my ex-wife.” “Ex-wife!” she screamed, “I didn’t know you were married before!” He gave her a pointed look and said, “I wasn’t.” |
