[Happy Anniversary!] My husband Ralph and I eloped to Key West 43 years ago today. We ran through the streets on a Friday, getting our blood tests, marriage license, in order to be married by a justice of the peace, before 5. I bought a gauze embroidered top from the Environmental Circus; he had a tropical flair shirt, to go with our shorts and flip-flops. For our honeymoon, we camped & slept on the coral ground at the old K.O.A. campground. Still crazy after all these years. ~Jeanie, the Peace Lady |

| [Charity Abuse] The Wounded Warrior Project spends only 60 percent on veterans. They are accused of wasting donation money. “Their mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors, but what the public doesn’t see is how they spend their money,” said Army Staff Sergeant Erick Millette. “Donors don’t want you to have a $2,500 bar tab. Donors don’t want you to fly every staff member once a year to some five-star resort and whoop it up and call it team building,” said Millette.

 [Easter Cantata] The Keys Chamber Orchestra and Lower Keys Community Choir are looking for additional participants for our upcoming Easter Cantata. Rehearsals begin February 16th, 2:00 p.m. at the BP Senior Center on Key Deer Blvd for orchestra members, and 5:00 p.m. at the Big Pine Methodist Church on Key Deer Blvd for the choir. We rehearse each of the following Sundays until the weekend of March 29th when we have a Monday night dress rehearsal followed by our 7:30 p.m. Big Pine concert on the 31st, 7:30 p.m. Venture Out concert on April 1st and a Key West concert at 4:00 p.m. on Palm Sunday. | [Sewers] Nearly everyone from Mile Marker 17 to 33 is now connected to the Cudjoe wastewater treatment plant and has been for a couple of years. For the Keys, septic tanks and cesspools are becoming a thing of the past. Review of the Cudjoe annual discharge monitoring report shows treatment that is state-of-the-art. Oxygen demand, nitrogen, phosphorus, fecal coliform, etc are way below permitted limits. What is being discharged is going down a deep well anyway. The Cudjoe treatment plant processes nearly 500,000 gallons of waste water each day. If this waste water were still being treated by septic tanks, about 250 lbs per day of nitrogen would still be discharged into the canals and near coastal waters. That’s about 45 tons per year of nitrogen that has been removed from our near shore environment, by switching from septic tanks to central sewers and treatment at the Cudjoe plant. Many experts believe excess nitrogen is a primary cause of overall degradation of the coastal marine environment. Time will tell if our investment in Keys waste water treatment will improve water quality locally. Or will our efforts be dwarfed by the continually increasing onslaught of nutrient pollution coming from mainland Florida. |

| [Key West Has Changed] It has been awhile since I have been in the Keys and I am shocked at the changes. The old rough rider drinking wildlife Keys are really gone and are being replaced by righteous simple-minded holy rollers with kiddies running all over the place. Nowhere are the great original bars and party places. No heavy ‘heads’ hanging around Key West or all the way up to Miami anymore. The Keys look like something from Dizzy World. Goodbye forever! |
