Letters to the editor with pictures since 2002. Published on Big Pine Key’s garbage days, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Finally, after several years, a good picture of the 7 Mile Christmas Tree.

Hippies started the ecology movement. They combated racism. They liberated sexual stereotypes, encouraged change, Individual pride, and self-confidence. They questioned robot materialism. In four years they managed to stop the Vietnam War. They got marijuana decriminalized in fourteen statues during the Carter administration. ~Timothy Leary

[Happy Anniversary!] My husband Ralph and I eloped to Key West 43 years ago today. We ran through the streets on a Friday, getting our blood tests, marriage license, in order to be married by a justice of the peace, before 5. I bought a gauze embroidered top from the Environmental Circus; he had  a tropical flair shirt, to go with our shorts and flip-flops. For our honeymoon, we camped & slept on the coral ground at the old K.O.A. campground. Still crazy after all  these years. ~Jeanie, the Peace Lady

You never appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Toilet paper is a good example.
[Friday Joke] A husband and wife were trying to decide what to watch on TV.  She wanted to watch a cooking program and he wanted to watch the porn channel.  She said, “Why should we watch porn?” He said, “Well, you already know how to cook.”. That’s when the fight started.

[Yard Sale] 28096 Gulf Blvd in Port Pine Heights this Saturday and Sunday. Tools, tools, tools.

The next meeting of the Big Pine Computer Club is coming up this Saturday, January 11, 10 am at the senior center.  Bring your electronic device(s) and join us.  Open to all! Full Menu > Ongoing Events

[Truth in Signage] Think we can get some of these for Big Pine?

[Friday Joke] One day, thinking he was funny, a man told his wife to start washing her underwear in Slim-Fast to take a few inches off of her butt.  The next day he grabbed a pair of his shorts and saw them full of powder.  He shouted, “Why did you put powder in my underwear?”  She replied, “It’s not powder, it’s Miracle Grow.”
[Stupidity] Do you remember, before the Internet, that people thought the cause of stupidity was the lack of access to information? Yeah. It wasn’t that

[Ketchup] Gourmet duct tape.

[“Accomplishments of the Marine Sanctuary”] For those that aren’t aware of the accomplishments of the Marine Sanctuary, here’s the skinny on that.

[Friday Joke] My son and daughter-in-law bought my wife and I a Roomba for Christmas. It seriously pics up a lot of dirt. For example, it found out my neighbor’s wife has been having an affair for 3 years and also my other neighbor is behind on her mortgage by 3 months

[Extreme Weather—Extreme Fire] Australia recorded its hottest day ever on Tuesday, as the average temperature across the country peaked at 106 degrees Fahrenheit — an increase from the previous record. Link
[Charity Abuse] The Wounded Warrior Project spends only 60 percent on veterans. They are accused of wasting donation money. “Their mission is to honor and empower wounded warriors, but what the public doesn’t see is how they spend their money,” said Army Staff Sergeant Erick Millette. “Donors don’t want you to have a $2,500 bar tab. Donors don’t want you to fly every staff member once a year to some five-star resort and whoop it up and call it team building,” said Millette.

“You’re using our injuries, our darkest days, our hardships, to make money. So you can have these big parties,” he told CBS News. Link

[Easter Cantata] The Keys Chamber Orchestra and Lower Keys Community Choir are looking for additional participants for our upcoming Easter Cantata.  Rehearsals begin February 16th, 2:00 p.m. at the BP Senior Center on Key Deer Blvd for orchestra members, and 5:00 p.m. at the Big Pine Methodist Church on Key Deer Blvd for the choir.  We rehearse each of the following Sundays until the weekend of March 29th when we have a Monday night dress rehearsal followed by our 7:30 p.m. Big Pine concert on the 31st, 7:30 p.m. Venture Out concert on April 1st and a Key West concert at 4:00 p.m. on Palm Sunday.  If you’d like more information, check out the Keys Chamber Orchestra Facebook page or email our conductor Wayne Hulting at whulting@yahoo.com.  It’s free, it’s fun, residency not required.
[Sewers] Nearly everyone from Mile Marker 17 to 33 is now connected to the Cudjoe wastewater treatment plant and has been for a couple of years. For the Keys, septic tanks and cesspools are becoming a thing of the past.
Review of the Cudjoe annual discharge monitoring report shows treatment that is state-of-the-art. Oxygen demand, nitrogen, phosphorus, fecal coliform, etc are way below permitted limits. What is being discharged is going down a deep well anyway. The Cudjoe treatment plant processes nearly 500,000 gallons of waste water each day. If this waste water were still being treated by septic tanks, about 250 lbs per day of nitrogen would still be discharged into the canals and near coastal waters. That’s about 45 tons per year of nitrogen that has been removed from our near shore environment, by switching from septic tanks to central sewers and treatment at the Cudjoe plant.
Many experts believe excess nitrogen is a primary cause of overall degradation of the coastal marine environment. Time will tell if our investment in Keys waste water treatment will improve water quality locally. Or will our efforts be dwarfed by the continually increasing onslaught of nutrient pollution coming from mainland Florida.
[“Iran — Is Key West and the rest of South Florida preparing for any hostel happenings from the middle east bad guys? It’s getting scary out there!”
Really? You’re scared like the draft age college kids who crashed the draft board’s website scared? What a country we’ve become. Kids who play war games online yet are too afraid to serve because their plans are for a free college degree and a first job that pays six figures (and they might get killed). Not their country first. Wait until they find out once they vote socialism in place their six figure paychecks will be shared. Screw scared! It’s time to stand as Americans have always done. Sadly, seeing the current state of America’s politics by feelings, I doubt we have the gumption to do what we did in WWII. That said, I’m too old to go back, even as a contractor, however, should the sleeper cells already in this country rise I’m ready to deliver two bullets, right between their eyes
Puerto Rico hit with 6.5 magnitude earthquake, island-wide blackout. Video
[Huh?] The only way to save the Keys is to dig all the waterways deeper for big yachts and redevelop the islands for the rich and infamous. If this is not done asap, thee islands will turn into a religious retreat with 90 proof Holy Water Bars and Brothels. Bet on it!

[Edd Byrnes Dead] Grease and 77 Sunset Strip star Edd Byrnes dies at 87 from natural causes.
Kookie, Kookie, Lend Me Your Comb

[Sewer Sarcasm] “Sewer line welds failing” Yes, the BOCC and FKAA know that cesspits are better and are the answer. That is why they are very busy creating them. They are going to call them the “Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean”.

[Key West Has Changed] It has been awhile since I have been in the Keys and I am shocked at the changes. The old rough rider drinking wildlife Keys are really gone and are being replaced by righteous simple-minded holy rollers with kiddies running all over the place. Nowhere are the great original bars and party places. No heavy ‘heads’ hanging around Key West or all the way up to Miami anymore. The Keys look like something from Dizzy World. Goodbye forever!

We gonna party like arthritis is setting in and we’re too old for this s**t!

Because Key West is a gay oriented city are local doctors infected with AIDS supposed to notify their patients? If not why not?
