[Crook Pardoned] Trump commutes 40-year prison sentence of former Cay Clubs CEO Fred ‘Dave’ Clark formerly of Monroe County, had served six years of a 40-year sentence for running a multimillion-dollar Ponzi scheme. He ran the Cay Clubs Resorts and Marinas, which defrauded about 1,400 investors who believed their money was going to turn Keys’ rundown properties into resorts. Link
[Friday Joke] It was mealtime during a flight on a small airline in the northwest. “Would you like dinner?” the flight attendant asked the man seated in front of me.
“What are my choices?” he asked.
“Yes or no,” she replied.”

Shannon Estenoz,
a fifth-generation Key West native known as a fierce and pragmatic Everglades restoration advocate, will lead the Department of Interior’s U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Park Service. She is married to Richard Grosso who is still doing amazing pro bono work for the Keys. Yeah! Link

[Dumb Clerks] You want to see real Florida Keys wing nuts in action? Go to a business, ring up a $40.01 purchase. Give the clerk $50 cash, and 1 cent. They look at you like, “huh”? Confounded, they hit the cash register for assistance, or call a fellow worker who is just as lost. Help us.

Oh God, please send me a sign!

Last Stand will hold its Annual Meeting on Tuesday, January 26th, 2021 at 5:30 pm.  The session is open to the public and will be held via Zoom Webinar.  This year’s program features Dr. Rachel Silverstein, Executive Director of Miami Waterkeeper, who will talk about protecting nearshore water quality by keeping excess nutrients out of Keys waters.  She will also explain a model fertilizer ordinance for South Florida.  This topic fits well with Last Stand’s continued focus on water quality for the Florida Keys. [“Light pollution”] Feedback to that birdbrain idea. This post on Tuesday depicts the majority of intelligence in the Keys. I will explain for you trogs who did not understand why we should turn off our lights at night. It is because we do not need to see if we are sleeping, to save a few cents of electric, and the lights may glare into a neighbors’ windows and keep them from sleeping. Have a bit of courtesy and respect for others or some may take target practice on those 500 watt f**king flood lights!
What veterans should know about diabetes. Link
[Stealth Vehicles] These damn electric bikes, electric skateboards, and even automobiles in Key West. They sneak right upon you, can’t hear them. The worst are the bikes and skateboards. Absolutely zero compliance with laws. They pass on the right, pass on the left, in stealth mode. Can they please be cited, and cruiser impounded? The city got rid of the cruise ships (temporarily at that), but these electric monsters have to go too.

[Snow in Key West] 44 years ago today, 1977, 8:15 am, it snowed in Key West. Temp on the ground was the record coldest day, 41 degrees. The freezing level was only 900 ft AGL. Melted as soon as it touched the ground, so there was no measurement for snowfall, therefore, it was officially declared as snow flurries.

[Habitat for Humanity] Thrivent is awarding Habitat for Humanity of Key West and Lower Florida Keys a contribution of $5,000 to help families in the lower Florida Keys stay in their homes. Thrivent’s donation will allow Habitat to provide mortgage relief to Habitat homeowners who need temporary assistance making their mortgage payments during the COVID-19 pandemic. With Thrivent’s support, Habitat will sustain affordable homeownership costs for more than 5 families in our community. Link

[Smaller Weenies] Pretty much every kind of commercially made plastic leaches synthetic estrogen. This is not good. Estrogen plays a key role in all sorts of developmental growth—from bone growth to heart function. And when levels are too high or too low, very strange things happen. Here’s how humanity has changed since the dawn of the Plastic Age.

[Editor Sucks] In regard to your response to my editorial, again, call it what YOU want.  And of course you don’t put the responses in the regular edition … only yours!  Your views are your opinions, this is not the platform.  Power corrupts all.

[Spare Parts] When you are the last cat built for the day and there are no matching parts this is one result.

[Rocky Road] Anyone happen to drive down Bertha Street in Key West? There are so many bumps, you can’t have a coffee or soda and not be soaked. But on the other hand, why drive to Disneyland? You have your own magic carpet ride right here in midtown.

[Boaters be Alert] Heads up in the Eden Pines canals! I’ve seen more manatees in our canal system this year than in any previous year — at least ten singles, four pairs, one trio, and today (Wednesday) a group of four.

[Big City Foot Bridge] A group of Islamorada property owners are suing the State to stop the building of the foot bridge that will span US1.

Perhaps this is appropriate for 1/20/2021.

[Vaccine Soon Come] COVID-19 vaccine coming to Publix in Key West and Islamorada. Appointments will be available on Wednesday. Seniors can make an appointment at Link
[Beat Up] The stepdaughter of Monroe County Commissioner Eddie Martinez was arrested and charged Tuesday night after she reportedly struck the commissioner twice in the face. Key West Police officers arrested Natalie Guerra, 24, of Homestead, on a misdemeanor charge of battery. Commissioner Martinez declined to press charges, but the police pursued charges given that he had visible wounds to his head.
American broadcasting legend Walter Cronkite (right) with the crew of a USAAF Martin B-26 bomber in England. Throughout WW 2 he flew missions in bombers, seaplanes and even landed in an assault glider on Operation Market Garden! How different from today’s media celebrities. Was he always old?
