[“AI is fake!”] I’ve said a couple of times, I’m on record, noting that as AI gets better and better, yes, is the good side, but the bad side is it can be better at making deep fakes. And a deep fake becomes a source of what someone thinks is an objective reality. What someone thinks is news. And then that becomes part of what people then argue over. And I worry that it could signal the end of the Internet.
When deep fakes become so good and it’s known that they’re good, that all the people who used to believe the fake news won’t believe the fake news anymore because they’ll be sure that it was faked. Once the people who believe fake news no longer believe anything on the Internet, there’s nothing left on the Internet to believe, not even the fake news, because that was faked. And I think that would signal the end of the Internet as a source of objective information in this world. And we’d all go back to just reading books and talking to people in the town square and maybe reading broadsheets stapled up on the bulletin board and then the Internet will just resort to cat videos just as it once was. ~Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson. [Friday Joke] A group of Americans were traveling by tour bus through Holland. As they stopped at a cheese farm, a young guide led them through the process of cheese making, explaining that goat’s milk was used. She showed the group a lovely hillside where many goats were grazing. “These,” she explained, “are the older goats put out to pasture when they no longer produce.” She then asked, “What do you do in America with your old goats?” A spry old gentleman answered, “They send us on bus tours!” |

[Birds] A code-red crisis is unfolding before our very eyes: Since 1970, we’ve lost three billion birds—one in every four—and the latest data from the 2025 State of the Birds report shows these declines are continuing across all habitats. 112 bird species are at a “Tipping Point,” having lost 50% or more of their populations in the past 50 years, and they will need focused efforts to recover. We must flock together to bring birds back before it’s too late. Donate |

[Friday Joke] A man was walking through the park when he saw a sign that said, “Talking Dog for Sale.” Curious, he knocked on the door and asked the owner, “Is it true?” The owner nodded and called the dog over. The man asked the dog, “What’s your story?” The dog replied, “I used to work for the CIA, but now I’m retired.” Amazed, the man asked the owner how much he wanted for the dog. The owner said, “Ten dollars.” The man exclaimed, “Ten dollars? Why so cheap?” The owner replied, “Because he’s a liar!” |

[Safer, Cleaner Ships] Mote Marine’s financial interest in the cruise ship operation at Pier B. The City of Key West recently made Mote the frontrunner to perform legally required monitoring for water-quality violations by cruise ships. This is a textbook definition of conflict of interest. Mote receives $50,000 annually from cruise ship operations in Key West under a special lease condition imposed on Pier B by the State of Florida. Mote Marine’s financial stake in Pier B is worth $1.25 million over the term of the 25-year lease. Violations of water quality standards by cruise ships could cause Pier B to lose the permits that authorize its operation of the cruise port. Therefore, Mote would have a financial incentive NOT to report any violations it finds Our Committee has focused on the City’s legal obligation to monitor its waterways for environmental violations caused by cruise ships, its rejection of the partnership with the College of the Florida Keys that documented water-quality violations by cruise ships at Pier B, and its consideration of replacing the College with Mote Marine, an entity with a multimillion-dollar financial stake in Pier B and other companies controlled by Mark Walsh. Mote failed to disclose this conflict of interest in its proposal, and the City thus far has not disqualified Mote from consideration. November 2024: College presented findings to the City Commission showing 32 violations of water-quality standards related to cruise ship activity. |
