Gay marriage is no longer a settled issue and could be in jeopardy. The Southern Baptist Convention last week called on the Supreme Court to overturn the 2015 Obergefell ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationally, which may surprise many who believed this was one debate that was resolved once and for all. About 740,000 LGBTQ couples have tied the knot. But social conservatives, particularly evangelicals have never given up on overturning it. Why? The court’s 2022 Dobbs ruling overturning Roe told Republicans that the court’s conservative majority is willing to reverse any past ruling; indeed, in Dobbs, justice Clarence Thomas “dropped a broad hint” that gay marriage should be revisited. Now a conservative Christian legal fund is teeing up a direct challenge. With momentum on its side, the Christian right is hoping that the Trump-driven march back in time to a patriarchal version of American Greatness will take another giant leap. |

[Shutdown Request Denied] Traditionally, humans have had at least one fail-safe method of controlling technology: hitting the off switch. But what happens when a machine wants to stay on? In May, the AI safety firm Palisade Research reported that multiple OpenAI models had refused explicit instructions to power down. Anthropic revealed that, during tests, its Claude 4 Opus model even resorted to blackmail, threatening to release fictional emails that suggested the engineer trying to shut it down was having an affair. This does not mean the models have attained consciousness; rather, they’re so optimized for self-preservation that they can independently formulate ways to manipulate and subvert their human handlers. The implications for the age of superintelligent AI are disturbing. “Any defenses or protections we attempt to build into these Al ‘gods’ on their way toward godhood will be anticipated and neutralized. |

Trump is visiting ‘Alligator Alcatraz.’ Could Air Force One land in the Everglades? It’s possible. To land near the controversial immigrant detention facility, which the DeSantis administration constructed over the last week, Air Force One would have to land at the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, a remote landing strip north of Tamiami Trail and just east of Big Cypress National Preserve in Collier County. This robotic tongue drummer bangs out all the ambient hits. If you like to listen to those “deep focus” soundtracks that are all ambient and relaxing, then you’ve heard a tongue drum in action. A tongue drum, or tank drum, is a unique percussion instrument traditionally made from an empty propane cylinder — though purpose-built models are now common. Several tongues are cut into one end cap and weighted to produce specific notes when struck. Video |
[Google’s New Search] The AI Overview takes the first 100 results from your search query, combines their answers and then returns what it thinks is the best answer. As expected, websites across the internet saw a drop in traffic from Google. You started to see a flood of smaller websites launch panic membership programs, sell off their sites, etc. It became clear that Google has decided to abandon the previous concept of how internet search worked, likely in the face of what it considers to be an existential threat from OpenAI.
