rails-old-brdg00[Old Seven Mile Bridge] Florida Keys local governments have begun to give their formal blessings to a funding plan to renovate the Old Seven Mile Bridge. On Tuesday night, the Marathon City Council approved the roughly $77 million plan between itself, the Monroe County Commission and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). The agreement calls for 30 years worth of repairs and upgrades to the 100 year-old bridge that once carried Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad, with DOT paying for the lion’s share of it. Under the terms of the agreement, DOT would maintain ownership of the bridge. DOT would pay $57 million of the projected $77 million in repair and maintenance costs over the next 30 years. Monroe County would pay $14.2 million, and Marathon would pay $5.3 million to help cover the cost of repairs. The county would have to pay an additional $720,000 up front to repair the Pigeon Key ramp, according to the agreement.

[Crook] A former administrator in the work release program at the Monroe County Sheriff Office pleaded guilty this week to stealing thousands of dollars in Social Security benefits, according to court records. The U.S. Attorney’s Office claims between January 2009 and July 2011, Roginia Robinson embezzled at least $5,460 in public funds by cashing 10 Social Security widow benefits checks. The checks were made out to another person with initials LJ.”

texting girl

[Reckless texting] It is against the law to text someone if you know they are driving. If the driver has an accident you could be convicted. I guess they’d call it reckless texting.

[Bailout] The numbers are in and they show that the Government bailout of the car companies saved over 4 million fairly well paying jobs, the loss of which would have been a disaster for our economy that was already crumbling at the time.

It seems that there are more and more vehicles on US1 with white blinking lights. The gamut runs from private to official looking vehicles, be they SUVs, pickups or even vans. What is the rule of engagement with such vehicles and why do they display blinking lights? At this rate, it may result in even legitimate emergency vehicles being confused for DOT ones.

Oscar Pistorius is a murderer. Come to find out, his girlfriend locked herself in the bathroom — with a key! Why would she use a key to lock herself in the bathroom in the middle of the night if she was just taking a leak? There were cricket bat marks on the door too, and when the bat failed to break the door down Pistorius got a gun and shot her through the door — all while she was screaming. He says he thought it was a female burglar screaming, or some such nonsense. I rest my case.

The 179 newly planted coconut palms on N Roosevelt Blvd look great. Has anyone noticed that Key West is looking more and more like Sarasota each year?

I just heard on Fox News that cat owners tend to be messy and lazy.  This explains why so many of them let their pets run loose in spite of the damage they do.

[Sewers] ‘Nugent Pumps’ is an appropriate name for grinder pumps for the man who wouldn’t fight for the people who elected him and forced them to have the dreaded grinder pumps. I heard that Commissioner Neugent is not getting a grinder pump. No one was surprised at that news.

[Friday Joke] A woman came up behind her husband while he was enjoying his morning coffee and slapped him on the back of the head.
“I found a piece of paper in your pants pocket with the name ‘Marylou’ written on it,” she said, furious.  “You had better have an explanation.”
“Calm down, honey,” the man replied.  “Remember last week when I was at the dog track? That was the name of the dog I bet on.”‘
The next morning, his wife snuck up on him and smacked him again.
“What was that for?” he complained.
“Your dog called last night.”

indians redskins

Nancy Pelosi has a good way to stop the Indians being insulted by having the Washington Redskins named after them. Trademark denial. She said the Trademark Department has refused or revoked trademarks in the past that were offensive to some. Without a trademark the Redskins won’t be able to sell exclusive merchandise, anyone will be able to sell it a lot cheaper. This will force the Redskins to change the name in order to get a very valuable trademark worth millions. Pelosi’s not even a lawyer and she thought that up.

[Shooting ‘Baskets’] When I was a kid we used to play basketball using a bushel basket for the hoop with the bottom cut out. We’d nail the basket to a telephone pole so we could use its street light to play at night.

[Money to waste] We constantly hear about how Social Security is going to run out of money. How come we never hear about welfare running out of money? What’s interesting is the first group worked for their money, but the second didn’t.

With ubiquitous spy cameras all over the place there is no longer any need for traffic helicopters. That’s good because there were too many of them crashing. For some reason traffic helicopter pilots seemed to be accident prone.

[“Nugent Pumps”] I like it! On the days your grinder station is working you can just call it ‘George’ and know he is proficient at slinging shit. When he pees on your feet you can call him something else and drop off the contents of your camp bucket at his house.

[“Car Trouble”] You flagged an AT&T vehicle and it wasn’t a life threatening emergency just an inconvenience for you. Of course the guy had to consider his job and go back to work. There are cell phones, friends, local towing companies and even AAA for $66 a year. Be prepared for a possible vehicle breakdown in advance. Happy birthday to the Syrian War for its third year.

[Sewer Fairness] Back in the good old days, when we had a logical tax system and we could afford to build our now crumbling magnificent interstate highway system, did we make the road smaller and cheaper out in the country where not so many people lived so it would be more fair financially  to those who lived in crowded cities?  No! Everyone got the same size road.

The Keys sewer system should be built the same way for all Keys’ homeowners. No one should be forced to have the inefficient and costly grinder pumps.
