[Pagers and Walkie-Talkies] The Israelis are some sneaky mother f**kers, you’ve got to hand it to them. How about the time they killed all Iran’s nuclear scientists, one by one, and then wrote sneaky, undetectable, code so Iran’s reactors wouldn’t work? How about killing all the terrorists, one by one, around the world, for the attack on the Israeli Olympic athletes. Or the time they snuck into Uganda and captured Edi Amin. What I want to know is why they let Hamas invade Israel on October 7? They have the best intelligence network in the world. They can’t tell me Mossad didn’t know an attack was imminent and when and where it was coming. |

[Snake Squeeze] A Thailand woman is found being crushed by a 13ft python which bit her thigh and coiled around her torso as she washed dishes. The 64 year-old widow said she struggled for more than two hours before her screams were finally heard by a neighbor who then called the police. (I told my wife this is not an excuse to stay out of kitchen.) Video |
Lebanon says 12 people were killed and at least 2,800 wounded by exploding pagers. The terrorists group Hezbollah don’t use cellphones because the Israelis eavesdrop on them so the crafty Israelis figured out how to make their pagers go boom. Link |
My canal overflowed the worst in the 25 years we’ve owned the place. The full moon high tide caused the canal to overflow four to five feet into my yard, too close to my beautiful gumbo limbo trees. It also caused the bumpers to float on top of the seawall instead of against it. The canal has never overflowed the seawall before. If this isn’t a sign of sea level rise, I don’t know what is. |
[Friday Joke] What is the difference between biology and sociology? Answer: If a newborn resembles his father, that’s biology but if he resembles the neighbor, then that’s sociology. |
[Roger Williams vs Puritans 1650 ] The charter Williams envisaged would be no easy trick to secure because it had no precedent. Williams wanted a colony grounded on the radical ideas he had been working out since coming to the New World: religious liberty for all comers, no matter how eccentric their beliefs; complete separation of church and state; democratic government, in which magistrates derived their powers not from God, as Puritan political theory had it, but from the consent of ordinary citizens. Those concepts, which ultimately formed the distinctive political foundation of the colony of Rhode Island, were that the church was an entirely separate entity from the state. It was a voluntary association of individuals, and one of the many civil corporations that the state was obligated to protect. The magistrates’ authority was temporal, not spiritual, just as the authority of the church was spiritual, not temporal. Williams disavowed the Puritans’ cherished belief that their Holy Commonwealths were in a special covenant with God.
The establishment of a reasonably stable colony government in Rhode Island in no way dampened the zeal of the orthodox Puritan colonies to extend their jurisdiction over the lands around Narragansett Bay, and to dominate the stubbornly independent Narragansett confederation. As a second generation of settlers came of age in the midst of a population boom—first-generation Puritan families had an average of between seven and eight children. |
[Exploding Pagers] Thousands of Hezbollah fighters are wounded when their pagers explode. The shocking incident, which saw scores of Hezbollah members and civilians severely injured throughout southern Lebanon, constitutes the largest intelligence breach in the group’s history. Link |

We finally know how static electricity really works. The first documentation of static electricity dates back to 600 BCE. Even after 2,600 years’ worth of tiny shocks, however, researchers couldn’t fully explain how rubbing two objects together causes it. It all comes down to nanoscale-level variations. Link |

[Deception] At the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables the food bill came with 3 additional taxes built in. They didn’t tell us beforehand. Nice place, but what a scam. I’ll bet they have a $50 “resort charge” tacked onto the room rate that they don’t tell you until you check-in. |
