![]() If somebody would please provide information about the known cause, or of any digging or overflow seen in the area in December or thereabouts, it would be much appreciated. Also, the affected homeowners who now live on an open cesspit with 1000x of high algae content are banding together to demand that the canals be opened or be justly compensated for the serious damage to property values and enjoyment. If you are willing to provide confidential information, please either post it or respond to canalswim@outlook.com. [Not Allowed To Repair Home] A group of people victimized by the County’s “Substantially damaged” rule have reportedly hired an attorney to challenge the legality of it. I have several friends who wish to join the challenge, so if someone can provide a contact, it would be much appreciated. I have to agree that this is another “color of law” ordinance that violates Constitutional rights and constitutes a “taking”. Just because your home was damaged, you are not allowed to repair it and instead have to demolish it and build something you cannot afford? And insurance will not cover the loss? That seems to be a very clear “taking” to me. |
![]() comes from an expert on prep. Not a Monroe County expert on preparedness, a real one. The last paragraph says it all. “Civil defense will only make a difference for a small number of people at the margin. But you might be one of those people!” says Lewis. “And so, I would recommend being prepared in the same way that one prepares for other natural disasters — you should shelter much as you would in a tornado or hurricane; you should have water and food much as you do for an earthquake. But we need to keep in mind that the most important thing is not to have a nuclear war in the first place.” In the article are a couple of links, Nuke Map takes parameters you plug in and shows the expected devastation. Try inserting Key West using both air and land blasts – the results are different for each. Then try your hometown. “Affordable housing” is a buzz word that developers use to get their massive building projects approved along with all their variances. Some people truly believe that this will help less fortunate people have homes. It would be interesting to have a list of all the affordable housing projects that were built in the Keys and the number of truly affordable units in them as opposed to what was projected in the initial design. You are being played big time if you think this will have much of an impact on the housing situation. The shrimp farm project is another one to watch. All this housing does is bring more people to the Keys increasing the need for more housing |

![]() Trails within the National Key Deer Refuge that were open prior to the January 20th government shutdown such as the Blue Hole and Watson/Mannillo Trails remain open to the public. Trails closed prior to the government shutdown remain closed. Refuge visitors are advised to use extreme caution if choosing to enter these units of the National Wildlife Refuge System, as FWS personnel including volunteers will not be available to provide guidance, assistance, maintenance, or emergency response on Refuge System property. Any entry onto Refuge System property during this period of federal government shutdown is at the visitor’s sole risk. FWS staff will not respond to calls from the public regarding sick or injured Key deer during the government shutdown but the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Dispatch will receive calls as usual and FWC officers will respond as available. The Key deer hotline remains unchanged at (305) 470-6863 ext. 7. Following the shutdown being lifted, Refuge updates can be found on our website and Facebook page. Link |

So the FTR Guy is moving up to the South. No, South Florida is not the South, it’s just an ugly suburb of New Jersey or Ohio. Things you need to know in the South, ice tea is always sweet, and in formal parlance the plural of “y’all” is “all y’all” |

[Metal Roofs] At the Sugarloaf Fire House last evening, Heather Carruthers non-verbally confirmed to me that the metal roof ordinance is going to be come law.
I had voiced my opinion to the county commission that I did not think this ordinance was good for the people, neither does the roofing industry. Metal roofs cannot be put on in Monroe County by the homeowner. Hence the homeowner in the future will not be able to make repairs to their own home and will be at the mercy of the contractors and their time restrains for labor and materials. To me, the hidden message is, if you’re not rich and cannot afford a contractor, then we do not want you in the Keys. If you thought it was hard getting out of the Keys before the storm and harder coming back due to the lack of workers, how much harder will it be when the workers are gone altogether? |
