[Old Fire Tower Photos] Have you ever seen any photos or have any information about the fire tower that was managed and staffed by the Florida Division of Forestry (today’s Florida Forest Service) in the 1970s and 1980s on Big Pine Key. It was located next to the Big Pine Key Volunteer Fire Department. I remember seeing it in the mid-1970s and would really like to see a photo of it if possible. Your Key West Citizen did a short article about it on April 13, 1986 just before it was dismantled, which is the only info I have about it. Thanks, ~Cliff Shaw (Editor: The closest photo I can come to the tower is the concrete block building that was next to the tower on Key Deer Blvd. I remember when Peter Bernhardt [r.i.p.] and his mutt Snoopy climbed up the rickety tower. Snoopy was low to the ground and that dog climbed all the way to the top. That was some dog.) |
[Lousy Tech Support] You no longer have to put www. before the web address you are trying to reach. |
[Addiction Starts Early] The dark future of iPad kids. Get ready for the next cyber-obsessed generation. Scary. Video |
FlKeysNews.com is reduced to just another aggregate of online news sources. What happened? It used to have more local news. Now they have the same stories online for a week or so. Link |
[Wooded Skyscraper] Milwaukee wants to build the world’s tallest timber skyscraper (again). The new tower would be double the height of the current record-holder—that’s also in Milwaukee. Link |
[No Global Warming] It’s Summer in South Florida and no it’s not global warming just normal hot weather. That’s what happens in summer. It gets hot. Sometimes it gets really hot and sometimes it doesn’t get so hot. Deal with it! If you don’t like it then you can move to Canada or better yet try Siberia, however your cellphone probably won’t work there. Oh well, poor baby, just something else to whine about. |
[Gardening in the Keys] When you are planting some plants in your flower bed put newspaper or cardboard – overlapping as you go around your plants and cover your entire flower bed. Wet the newspaper/cardboard and then cover with mulch and forget about weeds. Weeds will get through some gardening plastic underlayment but they will not get through wet newspaper or cardboard. |
[Disaster Resiliency Fund] Dear Friends, Although Hurricane Debby spared our area from the worst, United Way of Collier and the Keys remains committed to supporting our community throughout hurricane season. Our Disaster Resiliency Fund is more than just a source of aid—it’s a promise of strength and preparedness. Your donation to this fund is an investment in the resilience of our community. [Tree-hugger Nightmare] In the 17th century constructing a single large warship could require as many as four thousand trees; a hundred acres of forest might be felled. |
[Olympics] My favorite ‘sport’ was break dancing. Those guys were amazing. I think that in about 50 years when breaking is more accepted, the dancers will be wearing sequined spandex like ice skaters do. |
[Sales Tax] I buy a lot of things online and they always charge me sales tax. How much of all the collected sales tax do the states actually receive? |
[Your Honor, My Clients Are Idiots] Tara Lyles and James Lyles of Louisville, Kentucky, where weed is not legal, showed their hand a little too publicly when they posted videos of their marijuana production processes on TikTok. They were arrested on July 22 after a detective arranged to meet Tara in a Kroger parking lot to buy some devil’s lettuce. During the exchange, she told the detective that she “packages the product on a thousandths level scale and just completed a 1,000 pack order over the weekend.” Police seized 218 pounds of marijuana, worth about $450,000 on the street — again, in a state where weed is not legal. |
Why records are better than CDs in the streaming age. Vinyl is the most popular way to buy music and that’s a good thing. Vinyl is the most popular way to buy music. Now, to be clear, the revenue from all sales combined is insignificant compared to streaming, which pulled in $14.4 billion in 2023 (84 percent of record industry revenue). People overwhelmingly prefer to rent music than to buy it. The rise of vinyl is fascinating. A growing number of people are willing to pay more for a less convenient way to listen to music. You can’t listen to records in your car, for example, and lugging them on a plane trip is going to be annoying. So why are people buying records at all? Link |
[Airlines Hacked] Leaked secrets and unlimited miles: hacking the largest airline and hotel rewards platform. between March 2023 and May 2023, we identified multiple security vulnerabilities within points.com, the backend provider for a significant portion of airline and hotel rewards programs. These vulnerabilities would have enabled an attacker to access sensitive customer account information, including names, billing addresses, redacted credit card details, emails, phone numbers, and transaction records. Moreover, the attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities to perform actions such as transferring points from customer accounts and gaining unauthorized access to a global administrator website. This unauthorized access would grant the attacker full permissions to issue reward points, manage rewards programs, oversee customer accounts, and execute various administrative functions. Link |
[Captain Doom and Gloom: Olympics] If France can have the Olympics in that cesspool of a city, then Mexico City can have the winter Olympics because they have tons of “snow”! I hear even the forks and spoons carry VD in Paris. Are they going to have an International Sneaker Burn at the closing final? What are the Olympic grounds personal going to do with all the contaminated sportswear. Who is the vendor for the National French white flags? Where the Olympic officials really pissed because they wanted a realistic original Greek uniform [naked] event? What percentage do the hookers get from the show tickets? |
[Snake Round-up] The 2024 Florida Python Challenge begins. Hunters cant shoot the snakes, but could win $10,000 for catching the most Burmese pythons. These nonvenomous constrictors have disrupted the ecosystem of Florida’s Everglades over the past 20 years. Link |
[Break Dancing] Well, I have to admit that I watched break dancing on the Olympics. Do I consider it a sport? not really. Was it athletic? 100% yes! Was it entertaining? Very much so, compared to the other so-called Olympics sports like synchronized swimming and the gymnastics where they run around with little wands and streamers. |
[Powerful Affirmations] I am capable of turning my dreams into reality, and I embrace every opportunity that comes my way. I am resilient and strong, able to overcome any challenge that life presents to me. I am worthy of success and happiness, and I trust in my ability to achieve my goals. I am open to the possibilities that surround me, ready to seize the moment and take action. I am filled with courage and determination, and I believe in my power to create positive change. I am amazing and always enough, just as the creator intended me to be. Love flows through me, from me and to me and that’s enough for me. |

[Mongol Horde & Their Horses] This was the cavalry that had laid waste to half the known world. These squat, ugly beasts could ride forever at a gallop and even with the snow thick on the ground they were able to find their own feed, pawing at the ice with their front hooves to chew at the frozen and blackened vegetation beneath and somehow draw sustenance from it. Each of them had brought with him from Aleppo at least five horses, the bridle of each one loosely knotted around the neck of the horse on its left, the last animal in the line led right-handed by the rider. They used each horse for two days before resting it. The Mongols employed short stirrups, made of leather, and stood in the saddle, hour after hour, their sinuous legs never seeming to tire They would sleep in the saddle. They controlled their mounts by pressure of their calves on the horse’s flanks, and because they could ride without using the reins, they could even fire arrows at full gallop. This was why they wore such light armor, they had no interest in conventional hand- to-hand combat. These could let their arrows do their killing for them, at a distance. Link |
