[Zone Historic Area For Development] In an unexpected move, the City of Key West and the owners of the properties at 715 and 811 Seminole Avenue in the Casa Marina District are set to begin preliminary discussions regarding a Development Agreement despite initial requests for a postponement. The property owner had previously requested that discussions be deferred until the November 14th Commission meeting. However, the agenda for Thursday’s meeting reveals that the City is advancing negotiations with the property owner. Keys Last Stand is concerned about the timing and transparency of these discussions. We are concerned by the sudden inclusion of this agenda item, particularly given the substantial size and significance of the area in question, and the high level of community interest and previous controversies surrounding this development. Additionally, it is unusual for such a significant matter to be addressed by a City Commission that will soon be transitioning, with at least three to four new members expected to be seated following the August 20, 2024, elections. Keys Last Stand believes that the incoming Commission must handle such a critical issue. Keys Last Stand remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting the interests of Key West residents and preserving the region’s unique character. The organization continues to oppose any proposed zoning changes from Historic Residential to Historic Commercial for 715 and 811 Seminole Avenue in the Casa Marina District. Although previous proposals included workforce housing, the potential negative impacts of rezoning the area remain a significant concern. [Friday Joke] A human fart can be louder than a trombone I discovered this at my daughter’s school concert. |
[Top Secret Space Plane] So little is known about Shenlong, China’s ultra-secret, reusable space plane that there aren’t even publicly verifiable photos of the experimental aircraft. But that doesn’t mean knowledgeable astronomy enthusiasts can’t catch glimpses of the vehicle as it orbits Earth. Link |
[Exercise] For seven years I jogged a quarter mile every morning and then did 60 sit-ups every morning and my belly kept growing. I thought I might have had an alien in there. My backed ached and the chiropractor said to ride a bike instead because my exercise was shocking to my spine. Since then I’ve been riding a bike 4 miles, 6 days a week for a month and I’ve lost 3 pounds and no more backache. I can tell you that bikes are a lot easier than sit-ups and jogging. |

The Key West Citizen is now half price. It’s not surprising they are losing customers. They charge over a hundred dollars a year for a newspaper that can be read in less than five minutes. Just about two pages of local news, everything else you can read online at free websites. |
[Flooding] Lawsuit filed against Marathon golf course project over road flooding. I know it has nothing to do with Big Pine Key, but what happens here might somehow lay the groundwork for any future lawsuits in Big Pine. Link |

[Boeing] They went to space for eight days – and could be stuck until 2025. As of lately I’ve been very apprehensive about flying in Boeing built aircraft. But this takes things to a whole new height (bad pun intended). Link |
The Americans are a very lucky people. They’re bordered to the north and south by weak neighbors, and to the east and west by fish. ~Otto von Bismarck |
Bee venom is made by bees. This is the poison that makes bee stings painful. Bee venom is sometimes used to make medicine. Don’t confuse bee venom with bee pollen, honey, propolis, or royal jelly. Bee venom is given as a shot for bee sting allergy. It is also used for osteoarthritis, Parkinson disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), nerve pain, and other conditions, but there is no good scientific evidence to support these uses |

[Oils From Seeds] What science actually says about seed oils (Canola, corn, cottonseed, soybean, sunflower, safflower, grapeseed, and rice bran oils) Are they toxic? Do they cause inflammation? Find out what’s really going on—and what you should eat. Link |
[Domain Name] In 2020, when Kamala Harris launched her bid for president, NY-based trademark lawyer Jeremy Green Eche bought the domain HarrisWalz.com for $8.99. The idea, the cyber squatter says, was to “grab her name and all the heartland governors I could think of.” His purchase was vindicated this week, when Harris selected Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz to be her running mate. He said he’s willing to sell the website for $15,000, which is the same price he sold ClintonKaine.com for after purchasing it in 2011—five years before the 2016 election. |

[Boom] On December 28, 1944, while transporting ammunition to Mindoro, Philippines, the John Burke was hit by a Japanese kamikaze aircraft, and disintegrated in a tremendous explosion with the loss of all hands. John Burke was one of three Liberty Ships and one of forty-seven ships sunk by kamikaze attack during World War II. Video (Being an amateur history buff, especially the WWII era. I’m always surprised to find a video I haven’t seen.) Video |
