[Big Pine Book Club] Saturday, August 17, 10 am. This month the club is discussing Black Cake by Charmaine Wilkerson:
In present-day California, Eleanor Bennett’s death leaves behind a puzzling inheritance for her two children, Byron and Benny: a black cake, made from a family recipe, and a voice recording. In her message, Eleanor shares a tumultuous story about a headstrong young swimmer who escapes her island home under suspicion of murder. The heartbreaking tale Eleanor unfolds, the secrets she still holds back, and the mystery of a long-lost child challenge everything the siblings thought they knew about their lineage and themselves. Charmaine Wilkerson’s debut novel is a story of how the inheritance of betrayals, secrets, memories, and even names can shape relationships and history.

TikTok will permanently withdraw its controversial Lite Rewards program in the EU to comply with the Digital Services Act (DSA) — a sweeping content moderation rulebook for online platforms. TikTok Lite is the data-light version of the app, designed to work at slower internet connections and in devices with small memory capacity. Its Rewards program allows users to earn points by liking content, watching videos, following creators, and inviting friends to join the platform. They can then exchange these points for rewards, such as Amazon vouchers.
The strategy is as simple as it is disturbing: rewarding screen time with financial incentives.

The female Algerian Olympic boxer controversy involves someone with a type of DSD, a condition she was born with. Whether she has elevated testosterone levels, is 7 feet tall, has a uterus, has some male XY chromosomes instead of all female XX, whatever — is not of her doing. Professional and Olympic sports are going to have to deal with this situation in the future.
