[Crooks] Fentanyl theft coverup! Monroe County Administrator Roman Gastesi, the county’s highest ranking and highest paid employee, was just indicted by the Grand Jury and then arrested for participating in a coverup of Fentanyl theft from the county’s medical evacuation helicopter program. Gastesi reports directly to Monroe County Mayor Holly Merrill Raschein. Though the theft took place more than two years ago and investigations into it have continued, Mayor Holly Raschein claims to have been blindsided by the arrest. Link |
[Bills] Why must I prove that I am me to pay my bills over the phone? Do strangers really call to pay my bills? And if they do, then why don’t you just let them? |
[A Family Affair] Georgetown County, South Carolina Sheriff’s officers were called to a home on July 28 on reports of an assault in progress. Deputies were told that the fight started while siblings Anthony Harper and Hope Harper were cooking chicken. Hope Harper allegedly asked her brother “why he didn’t season the chicken … so it could crust up”. When Hope called Anthony a “dumb female dog,” he pushed her into a table and punched her. Someone else in the home fired a 9mm handgun into the ceiling, hoping to stop the brawl, but no, Hope retrieved a steak knife and started swinging it at her brother. Next, their grandmother swatted Hope with a broom until she backed off. But Anthony, his chef cred cruelly questioned, picked up a can of Raid bug spray and sprayed Hope on the neck and face until she grabbed the can and sprayed him back. Each of the siblings is pressing charges against the other; both were released on bond.
Well, it’s nice to see that Florida hasn’t cornered the market for Redneck Dumbassery. |

[“Us Mobile”] I’ve been using them for two years for my spare phone that I keep on the boat. It costs just $8.50, total, a month for minimum everything. If I use it more then the minimum bill increases fairly, in line with the other carriers. |

[Computer Club] Our next meeting is this Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Community Center, Winn Dixie Plaza, BPK. Several of us want to try to communicate via Skype so that people who can’t be with us in person can join us virtually. Here’s what you do: Download the Skype app. It’s free & may have automatically come with your device. Follow the directions and do what they tell you to do to set it up. Then send me your phone number so I am sure to have it. Be online and about 11:15 I’ll give you a buzz. Be sure to turn on your camera & mike ( the little icons on the page). We’ll have to work out a few glitches, but then it will work fine. My niece and I frequently have face-to-face visits, but I’ve never tried a group chat. The advantage of Skype over Zoom is that it is free, and you can talk as long as you like (24 hours). Zoom allows you a free 40 min. After that you have to pay.Skype works on VOIP, Voice over internet protocol. It’s a technology that allows people to make voice calls and other types of communication over the internet instead of using a traditional phone line. |

[Cautantowwit] The Narragansett Indians (Rhode Island) had a panoply of spirit-gods but only one creator—Cautantowwit. According to Roger Williams, “Cautantowwit made one man and woman of a stone, which disliking, he broke them into pieces, and made another man and woman of a tree, which were the fountains of all mankind. People who led good and useful lives returned to Cautantowwit’s home in the southwest after death; the unworthy were destined to wander forlornly in the cosmos. Narragansett dead were usually buried in the fetal position, with the head facing toward Cautantowwit’s home. |
[Miami Lego House] A cheaper, greener way to build in Florida? It goes together like a Lego toy kit. The first stage of construction of a first-of-its kind apartment building in Palm Beach County. [Deadly Crash] A witness eating lunch at a Florida Keys restaurant said the impact of the personal watercraft that killed a 9-year-old boy and his father early Tuesday night made “a sound like a bomb exploding.” The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission identified the boy Thursday as Daniel Dominguez and his father, who police say was operating the 2018 Yamaha, as 47-year-old Jose Dominguez. |
[Snakes] Grabbing pythons in the Everglades. When the dew point drops in the dead of the night, it’s prime time for pythons. “I catch more pythons when that happens,” Aycock explained. “It’ll make things start moving.” Aycock, a contractor with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, has hunted Burmese pythons in the Everglades for 11 years. [Convention] Why would anyone watch the convention? It’s totally boring with a bunch of old people saying the same old things. We want debates. That’s where the real action is. |
[Capitalism] This is part of my Lego Capitalism series, where I create simplified models to help you visually navigate the complex webs of global finance. Audio version coming soon. Project Cybersyn was an experiment in ‘cybernetic socialism’, but was disbanded in 1973 after a US-backed coup brought a neoliberal warlord called Augusto Pinochet to power. Pinochet immediately set about murdering and imprisoning opponents in order to bring free markets to Chile, a process that would involve letting mega US corporations sidle into the country. Link |
Music recommendation ranking system that uses Transformer models to better understand the sequential nature of user actions based on the current user context. Consider a scenario where a user typically likes slow-tempo songs. When presented with an up-tempo song, the user would typically skip it. However, at the gym, when they’re in a workout session, they like more up-tempo music. In such a situation, we want to continue learning from their prior history to understand their musical preferences. At the same time, we want to discount prior skips of up-tempo songs when recommending workout music. Link |
