The Coconut Telegraph’s readers added a great incentive to gather and greet our Wounded Warrior Bicyclists as they headed South on US1 towards their final destination in Key West. Arriving at the VFW Post 10211’s nicely remodeled restaurant The Armory Speakeasy, this group of injured and disabled warriors were embraced by an absolutely thunderous welcome, sending chills through the spines of everyone in attendance.
For 20 consecutive years the therapeutic healing of this event, under the auspicious leadership of State Attorney/VFW Commander Dennis Ward, County Veterans Affairs Director Cathy Crane and our extraordinarily skilled Sheriff Rick Ramsay; have positively manifested this event, which has significantly impacted the lives of many hundreds of our Veterans. Mayor/County Commissioner Holly Raschein and Marine Lieutenant Colonel Mark Birk excited and inspired these Warriors before leaving on their ride. Veteran suicide rates have decreased by approximately 18% over the course of this therapeutic and blessed event.
Our Armory Speakeasy Restaurant donated a delicious array of breakfast delicacies, for our riders, greeters and support personnel prior to their departure on this challenging ride. The Sheriff Department’s absolutely amazing “Motorcycle Corps” and other law-enforcement agencies protected and safely guided this disabled group on their travel through the Keys. Many of the Warriors gathered around and chatted with Nicole Navarro and her support Fox before setting out.
The scene in front of Coral Shores High School was spectacularly beyond belief. The over the top welcome extended to the Wounded Cyclists was memorable and never will be forgotten.
The Islamorada, Tavernier and Key Largo Fire/Rescue Departments, along with our Florida Keys Elective Cooperative, Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority and School Administrators, Teachers and Staff from Plantation Key School and Coral Shores High School were utterly amazing in their coordination, as they paid tribute to our Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans. Always at the ready, American Legion Post 145 had their exhilarating display and military vehicle available for our students to explore.
As a life-long teacher, I’ve never in my life witnessed such a positively inspired and intellectually curious group of students, willing to engage and authentically extend a warm, gratifying and heartfelt greeting to our Veterans. This spiritually charged event consolidated all the loving kindness one could muster. Thank you so very, very much.
Sincerely,
John Donnelly, MS|Purple Heart Recipient, Wounded Warrior Rider

[Even Ants Hold Grudges] Ants primarily rely on their fine-tuned olfactory sense to differentiate between the smell of members of their own family (i.e. safe ants) and ants from other colonies. A familiar scent while out foraging, for example, allows a worker ant to know which nearby ants are there to help, and which may be rivals hunting for the same resources. But new research from evolutionary biologists at Germany’s University of Freiburg indicates ants don’t just react in the moment—they retain knowledge of hostile encounters with neighboring enemies, and act accordingly.
