[Key West Cruise Ships] The One Ship Policy directs large cruise ship operations away from Mallory Dock and the Outer Mole and establishes priority docking at the privately operated Pier B Cruiseport. Faithfully implemented by the City for the past 50 months, the One Ship Policy has led to a 50% reduction in environmentally damaging large cruise ship operations.
[‘Comcast sucks”] I wholeheartedly agree. I have never heard a good thing about them. They are all sweetness and smiles when you call them while they continue to cheat you. They rent you old equipment until you complain, and then they make like they are doing you a favor by renting you something that actually works.
[Creepy Spokesperson] Every time the Car Shield ad comes on TV I shudder. The spokesperson scares me. I think he’s a former rapper with negro blood and white skin (at least on my TV), a slim goatee and turned down mustache. He talks like a pissed-off gangster and makes it seem like he’s going to knife me if I don’t buy his insurance.
[“Doorman fallacy“] The restaurant we were at made a decision to replace physical menus with a QR code. I’m not a fan of this trend, because it forces me to take out my phone when I’d rather be present with the people I’m with and once a phone is out it’s hard to put away without checking other stuff.

On paper, it looks like a smart decision. Reduce paper, reduce staff, reduce operating costs. But what gets overlooked is the hit to the customer’s dining experience. We’ll look back to that meal with mostly positive things to say, but somewhere in our subconscious, we’ll remember the parts that robbed it of its magic. Forcing us to use an electronic device to eat is wrong and lessens the whole experience of being waited on and service. Doorman fallacy

I like Socialism for the simple reason that it looks out for everyone, unlike capitalism that only looks out for the wealthy and those with the ability and skill to get rich.
What is Dark-Sky Lighting? It’s simply a way of lighting that helps keep the sky dark by fully shielding the light bulb on the top and sides so the light is directed down rather than to the sides and up to the sky, which creates glare, excess light and hides our stars. Video
[Welfare States] Instead of your racist rant about blacks getting more in welfare funds than they deserve, why not talk about “welfare states” like West Virginia that get $2.92 back for every dollar they contribute to the federal budget. Mississippi gets back $2.66 for every dollar.   Blue states like California, New York, Washington subsidize the red states. Do some research and stop with the racist remarks.
[Grammar Police] It is not: For those of you who “could” care less about the FIFA
It should be: For those of you who “couldn’t” care less about the FIFA
The first means that you do care somewhat. The second means this is the least you could care.

[Tarot] From card game to a tool of divination: the artistic history of tarot. A new exhibition follows the unlikely route of tarot cards all the way from 15th century Italy to its association with the occult now. Link
[Digital Identity Wallets] Soon come! European governments are rolling out digital identity wallets, which are to be used by citizens to access services, and to verify their age online. As reported by Follow the Money and Android Authority, there is a serious problem with this: these wallets rely on safety services of Google and Apple who created the problem in the first place. Is this the fox guarding the henhouse?  Link
Frida Kahlo the icon: a thin line between canonization and commercialization. The Mexican artist’s legacy is far greater than the kitsch. She is a much-loved symbol of rebellion and resilience. Even before it opened this week, Tate Modern’s Frida: The Making of an Icon was a smash hit. With more than 50,000 advance tickets, it is the highest pre‑selling show in Tate history, beating David Hockney in 2017. This is “the Fridamania” that the exhibition sets out to explore, charting Frida Kahlo’s rise from little-known Mexican artist to global phenomenon. During her lifetime, Kahlo was overshadowed by her painter husband, Diego Rivera. Last year, the sale of one of her self-portraits broke the record for the most expensive work by a female artist.

[Rich Hunk of a Man] Now for more FIFA World Cup news that you don’t really care about. Nigerian Prince Maduka Okoye, when he’s not giving millions of dollars to people he doesn’t know, he is also the goal keeper for the Nigerian national World Cup team. And for some reason women are losing their minds over him
[Dumb Americans] George Carlin 2005 and we’re still just as dumb. Video
[Smart People] Building a custom octocopter from scratch with 0 prior hardware experience. Designed in Fusion 360, CNC-milled from G10 fiberglass and carbon fiber, and assembled by hand. [Open Source Inventions] My name is Daniel Connell. I prototype and develop basic technologies which anyone can make using recycled materials and simple tools. The aim is for everyone everywhere to be able to build and maintain their own infrastructure; producing their own energy, food, clean water, communications, and anything else they need. All designs are open source and license free for any purpose, and full construction tutorials and how-tos are available here. The Facebook group is also a good place to ask questions and post results from your own builds. Featured In: Al Jazeera, The Guardian, New Statesman, Le Monde,  Makezine
[Sony erases digital content from libraries] And reminded us we don’t own what we buy. As of September, Sony will remove any affected titles that UK users bought from their PlayStation library, per the notice. In a legal notice first spotted by gaming news outlet PlayStation LifeStyle, Sony said that affected customers will lose the ability to stream titles. Link
Exercise intensity influences body composition: a 6-month comparison of high-intensity interval, moderate- and low-intensity training among healthy older adults. Only high-intensity interval training reduced fat mass while maintaining lean mass. Moderate-intensity training reduced fat mass but also caused declines in lean mass. Both moderate- and high-intensity training improved visceral adipose tissue. Link
Nearly a million passports and photo IDs were left unprotected on the public internet. This should be a wakeup call for data security.
[How to lie about radiation] The radiation exposure lie explained. Link
Age verification is just a precursor to attribution of speech. Lots of US states, European countries, and Australia have introduced “age verification” regulations. They present it as the classic “save the children” talking point, but it’s really just a precursor to attribution of speech, particularly attributing your words to your real identity. Link
[Supplements] These are dark days for supplements. Although they are a $30-plus billion market in the United States alone, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, beta-carotene, glucosamine, chondroitin, and fish oil have now flopped in study after study. f there was one supplement that seemed sure to survive the rigorous tests, it was vitamin D. People with low levels of vitamin D in their blood have significantly higher rates of virtually every disease and disorder you can think of: cancer, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, heart attack, stroke, depression, cognitive impairment, autoimmune conditions, and more. The vitamin is required for calcium absorption and is thus essential for bone health, but as evidence mounted that lower levels of vitamin D were associated with so many diseases, health experts began suspecting that it was involved in many other biological processes as well.
