[Big Guy vs Little Guy] A competing company decided to push me out of business. It’s not the first time they tried. To counter this move, I want to emphasize that I’m locally owned. My customers’ money stays here in the lower Keys. I don’t hire illegals, only Americans. Irma devastated my business and I’m slowly rebuilding it, but this is another setback. How can I stop big business from bullying my small local company?

[Fires] Reading with interest the ongoing complaints about one more supposed disaster in my former paradise home, Big Pine Key, a major brush fire, smoldering and burning/out of control.
Here in Highlands County, 5 miles from my home, a fire has been burning and smoldering since April 12 while officials hope and pray for rain. Finally the State Forestry Service took over and brought in 1500 feet of borrowed 6 inch pipe and 2 big pumps and began pumping 800 gallons a minute from a nearby creek. Now the disaster here is under control. Residents of BPK live on an island surrounded by water. Surely someone there can figure out the answer there.  ~Mike Gushey

[Winn Dixie] That shout out to Popa John’s? WTF? I worked at Winn Dixie the night of forest fire—we were open. Every night after that we were open regular hours too. Is there another grocery store I am not aware of? Winn Dixie closed? Hell, sounds like someone sneaking in free advertising. If you were not busy making pizzas you would have seen the crowd at Winn Dixie because our new generators were working overtime till power was restored. We were also open right after hurricane Irma closed everyone else but us! For the first time we have a manager who is actually committed to the people around here. (Ed: Kenny Lowe is his name and he is the first manager who wanted to advertise on bigpinekey.com! I’ve been trying to get them to advertise for twenty years and been ignored until Mr. Lowe took over.)
[Hurricane Irma] Could you give me an update on the recovery in Big Pine Key. We have put our son in SeaCamp for the last couple of years. We get no response from them. Thank you.  ~Mike Barker

[Signs of Spring] Buds on the tree.

[Fascism] Benito Mussolini created the word ‘fascism.’ He defined it as ‘the merging of the state and the corporation.’ He also said a more accurate word would be ‘corporatism.’ This was the definition in Webster’s up until 1987 when a corporation bought Webster’s and changed it to exclude any mention of corporations.
Thinking about a KIA to replace your Keys Cruiser?  Here’s a few things to consider.  They are well built, comfortable and have lots of features.  Prices are not bad and negotiable as usual.  Nice people, easy to deal with.  Regular service comes with a full top-off of all fluids and a wash job.  But your new KIA does NOT come equipped with a spare tire.  I learned this the hard way.  AAA had to the tow the car to the KW dealer for a tire replacement.  Huge pain in the ass.    No word yet on when I will get the car back.  Maybe tomorrow if they have the tire in stock.  Otherwise ? How can KIA sell a $26,000 car with no spare tire?
It is said that Cuba is a world leader in both hurricane preparedness and recovery. Link

Welcome to Pakistan. Is this a shithole country?

Where’s FTR? I guess he’s got everything he’s wanted — his dream President, Zika mosquitoes and a gun in everyone’s hands.

Habitat for Humanity of Key West and Lower Florida Keys has named Greg Brown as the new Executive Director, replacing Mark Moss who passed away in February. Brown is a U.S. Certified Public Accountant and was educated at the University of Miami, where he received his Master’s Degree in Professional Accounting.

[Stupid Patent] People who believe toilet paper should hang from behind are the flat-earthers of pooping.

Correspondents’ Association throws comedian under bus over jokes on Sanders’ appearance.  The White House Correspondents’ Association distanced itself late Sunday from comedian Michelle Wolf after her comedy routine on Saturday that some found vulgar and personal. Video
[Dead Reef] Alongside the rest of methods used to fleece snowbirds is a fund being set up to protect the reef. It’s too late. It’s dead. While there’s minuscule work being done in isolated locations Mother Nature has other things in mind. Guess what you’re walking on right now? An old coral reef that died millions of years ago. Save your money-buy shares of beer stocks.

[DaVinci] As usual, Leonardo was distracted by other pursuits. “He devotes much of his time to geometry and has no fondness at all for the paintbrush.” Salai and some of his other friends took me to see him on Wednesday,” Pietro wrote on April 14. “In truth, his mathematical experiments have absorbed his thoughts so entirely that he cannot bear the sight of a paintbrush.” He owed a painting to his patron and a sculpture to a king, yet he dabbled.

[Immigrants] We are being invaded by countries that are culling their populations. To stop these people from moving into America I will not purchase anything from a business or manufacturer that hires these people.

[Immigrants] We had often felt like outsiders in Germany, but we didn’t feel directly threatened until September 1991. Almost two years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, xenophobic riots broke out in Hoyerswerda, a town in the northeast of Saxony. Right-wing groups attacked workers from Vietnam and Mozambique and threw stones and gasoline bombs at an apartment block that housed asylum seekers. My parents and I watched on TV as Germans applauded when a building burst into flames. Some even raised their hands in a Hitlergruss, the infamous straight- armed Nazi salute.

[Strawberry Pizza] Pineapple and non-pineapple pizza eaters must put aside our differences and join forces to defeat this evil. Yes, that’s strawberries on a pizza!

[Hates Deer & Facebook] From what I’ve been reading, more people are worried about the Key Deer than the people whose home was destroyed by the fire. Yes, Big Pine has always been ruled by the deer. Even when the sign used to say there’s only 2 left. I even saw someone on Facebook post concern about the butterflies. Really? For starters, about Facebook, you’re really still using that site after Zuckerberg stole and sold your personal data.

Juror on what sealed Cosby‘s fate. Harrison Snyder served on the jury in the Bill Cosby trial and is speaking out about why he found the comedian guilty. Video

[Tourism is Bad] Big Pine is becoming nothing more than a tourist attraction and soon to be a bedroom community for low wage workers for the rest of the Keys. They’ve lost their uniqueness. Full-time residents are the island monkeys the tourists come to see. Some lay around, others do comical things to get laughs and tips. Hopefully, they’ll start throwing their s**t at the visitors just like at the zoo
[Date Rape Ok] Bill Cosby is found guilty of having a big ‘one’ and not calling them back!

[43% have considered deleting FacebookThe latest Fox News Poll finds that nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of current users say they care if Facebook shares their information with others, and a large 43 percent minority have thought about deleting their account in order to protect their privacy.

[The Master Race] Why are all advertisers making it look like racial intermingling is a good thing? Seems to me it will create nothing but mutts just like in the animal kingdom. Racial diversion is what God created, not One Inhuman mess.
