Published Tuesdays & Fridays (garbage days on Big Pine Key)
Since 2002

[Born Between 1930 – 1946] You are the last to remember ration books for everything from gas to sugar to shoes to stoves.  You saved tin foil and poured fat into tin cans.  You saw cars up on blocks because tires weren’t available.  You can remember milk being delivered to your house early in the morning and placed in the “milk box” on the porch. You are the last to see the gold stars in the front windows of grieving neighbors whose sons died in the War.  You saw the ‘boys’ home from the war, build their little houses. You are the last generation who spent childhood without television; instead, you imagined what you heard on the radio.  With no TV until the 50’s, you spent your childhood playing outside

Today is National Peanut Butter Lovers Day. It happily coincides with National Dadgum That’s Good Day. Also National Pig Day. So I guess that means we should eat a peanut butter and bacon sandwich. Dadgum that’s good.

[Medical Pot] Stop trying to undo voters’ will and move forward, Florida. Another legislative session is upon us. And that means at least one attack on Floridians’ constitutionally guaranteed right of access to medical marijuana. Link
We Gotta Be Less White — New song.

[Uranus] Sixty-three Earths can fit inside Uranus. One day I’ll be mature enough to read this without laughing.

[Measures Week] These dates are designated every year to commemorate President John Adams‘ signing of the first United States weights and measures law on March 2, 1799.

[Marathon Airline] Aztec Airways’ new passenger airline service between Fort Lauderdale and Marathon Airport will enable travelers to avoid parking fees, large crowds, long security lines, renting a car and driving three hours each way. It’s also a welcomed return of scheduled commercial service to the Middle Keys’ general aviation airport since the departure of Cape Air in 2009 and Delta in 2007. It’s about a 35-minute flight. Roundtrip flights will be offered by Aztec Airways three times a week beginning Thursday, March 4, for $249 per passenger.
[“Window sash removal”] It depends on the window manufacturer. They all approach it differently. Is the window wood, aluminum, or vinyl? Our windows have a slide that, when moved, frees the sash from the frame.
[Stop Enjoying Music] What makes me understand why America is not going to make it much longer is that moment when I view a crowd of common people at any festival or outing and the way they react like simple-minded idiots to the music, the groupie feeling or to politics in mass. No matter their age, they are so air-headed today, even a world war would not register to their three year old brains.

Does “Mask up, Key West” exclude sunburn tourists carrying a pineapple drink with a decorative umbrella?

This bromeliad bloomed months ago and when the flowers died it left this lovely remnant that is just as good looking.

[Politicians Flirting] It’s a shame that a fine person’s career and life can be ruined just by flirting with a woman at work. His flirtations are considered equal to rape or even violence. How’s a guy going to get laid if he can’t be suggestive? How will the woman know he’s interested in sex and not just interested in being her friend.

Ketchup is just duct tape for fixing bad food.

The March AARP calendar of activities is here. Full Menu > Ongoing Events
[Gravel Thief] I didn’t believe what I was seeing. My neighbor just got a truck load of lawn gravel and by the time the truck finished dumping it, the low rent neighbors were stealing trash cans full for their yards. The Keys are turning into a slum.
[UFO] An American Airlines pilot reported seeing “a long cylindrical object” flying over his plane during a flight from Ohio to Arizona on Sunday. The encounter with the unidentified flying object happened over New Mexico as AA flight 2292 was heading to Phoenix from Cincinnati. The pilot called air traffic control shortly after noon local time on Feb. 22 to report seeing the object, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. Video
Conspiracy theories — because reality is hard.

Someone asked about the “Alig Ate Her” sign at the Blue Hole. It’s no longer there. I’ll bet there was a lawsuit or fear of one that caused them to remove that cool sign and replace it with this one.

[“My mother doesn’t have a pee tube”]  You should have paid more attention in your medical school anatomy classes, I think. Your mother does have a pee tube and it’s more accurately known as a urethra.

[Florida’s Best Beaches] It seems like Bahia Honda didn’t make the cut this year. Of the 8 beaches in Florida listed in the article Bahia Honda was not one. When will those lazy asses responsible for getting the beach fully open get to work and start earning the taxpayer’s money. What happened to the sign proclaiming Bahia Honda as number 2?  It’s been almost 4 years since hurricane Irma and they still haven’t got the Sandspur Day Beach open. What gives?

[Gardening In The Keys] I planted the stubs of some green onions last week and they grew faster than anything I’ve ever planted

[Bike Tour] Just when you think you’ve seen everything. A bike tour led through the dark streets of old town. The guide makes a left turn with no hand sign up a one way street. Of course his paying clients following in tow. Stop the madness.

[TV For Sale] $100 Samsung 32” TV. Pick up in Grassy Key. Works fine, just upgraded to something larger. lee.lapid@yahoo.com

[Didn’t Like Art Show] The art show at Truman Waterfront Park was total flop! Many will boycott next year if it’s still at Waterfront/dog park instead of lower Whitehead Street. No escaping the brutal sun, tents all lined up, looked like a concentration camp.
There’s a blood drive Thursday March 4th at Bealles 11-4. Click the link below to register. As a thank you for helping save lives, all blood donors will receive a Free Tie-Dye T-shirt and a $10. Link eGift. Link

[Frankenskeeters] Watch A  Mosquito Man, Sci-Fi. comedy. A nuclear plant worker, abducted by an evil scientist in disguise, is exposed to rabid  mosquito DNA, setting off revenge for all who wronged him. Funny, campy sci-fi movie.  Timely for Keys viewing. Good for some laughs as you see what happens to this experimental mosquito DNA. What could go wrong?

[Doctor Seuss Banned] A Virginia school system has accused Dr. Seuss books of ‘strong racial undertones’ following a report which accused author Theodor Geisel of ‘orientalism, anti-blackness and white supremacy. Link

[Technology] “It dries clothes with the latest technology. It’s solar combined with wind.”

[“Old days”] Thanks to all that are contributing the Key’s history stories. I lived in Marathon back in the mid to late 2000’s but wish I had been there in the 70’s and 80’s. Reading the stories in Friday’s edition were great. Please feel free to share more. I really enjoying reading them.
