 [Key Deer Blvd] It has been much more obvious recently, that Key Deer Blvd is very much on borrowed time. For the last hundred years ending around 2000, sea level had been rising at the rate of slightly less than one inch per decade.
In 2003, the Larsen B ice shelf in West Antarctica collapsed and the rate increased, also effected by many other ice shelfs and glaciers that are melting. Since then, the Larsen C ice shelf has also collapsed, which was the size of Rhode Island and about 300 feet thick. The rate of sea level rise has increased accordingly and is more in line with a rate of three inches rise per decade. High tides now, frequently come right up to west side of Key Deer Blvd. More than forty percent of the population of Big Pine Key travels Key Deer Blvd to reach their residences. Most of the highest residential land on the island is accessed via Key Deer Blvd. These are properties that will still be viable homesteads in ten or possibly twenty years in the future. Unfortunately, Key Deer Blvd, will be under salt water a lot of the time. The recent storm surge from Hurricane Ian, which was well over 100 miles west of Big Pine Key at its closest passage, demonstrated just how vulnerable it is. The road was reduced to one lane in several areas in the center part of the island for hours. There are no plans by the county to raise Key Deer Blvd |

 [No Electricity Electric Vehicles] The consequences of owning an electric vehicle in lee County. I suppose that if your vehicle wasn’t drowned in Ian it will be totally useless for at least a month. No electricity. Aren’t y glad that y spent $70000 for something that will just sit there looking dumb. |

 [Glaring Headlights] Many yeas ago the government ordered all vehicles to be equipped with the 3rd stoplight and it shall be mounted at eye level. This has proven to greatly reduce the number of rear end collisions, which is very good!
Now, it’s high time some serious some regulations be made law regarding these super high power blinding headlights and the allowable number of them. Many of these lights are on those jacked up trucks, which compounds this problem and makes driving even more dangerous. Let’s go Joe! |

 [Groceries and Inflation] I got out my calculator and figured out that it is cheaper to order my groceries and supplies from Miami and have them shipped to Cudjoe Key than to buy them at the markets in BPK and KW. No gas or car maintenance costs or dangers of driving 25 miles one way then back either! Also, the prices are much lower and the products fresher. |
