 [Trial of Big Pine Key Women for Euthanizing Key Deer] This trial was really about the Key Deer Refuge’s power over a local resident. The only thing this lady did wrong was originally denying being at the scene. The facts are simple, a deer was severely injured and in pain for an extended period of time. The proper agencies were called and there was no response. A group of local residents took matters into their own hands and agreed that the best course of action was to humanely put the animal down. What was done, was exactly what authorities would have done and have done many times. It has no effect on the Key deer population.It simply put an animal out of misery that would not have recovered. Instead USFWS and the National Key Deer Refuge intimidated and threatened local residents for responding to the needs of severely distressed wildlife, and ultimately prosecuted the person who did what needed to be done. The same agency that has been violating the Endangered Species Act, by disturbing and destroying Key Deer habitat, that does have a profound detrimental effect on many endangered species, pretends that it is enforcing the ESA The management of the National Key Deer Refuge used to be one of the most respected organizations on the island. Those days have been gone for many years. They should consider investigating their own activities, and evaluating what they are doing wrong. The monumental funds that are wasted are the real crime here. |
