Big Pine’s Haunted House will be open for haunting on Sunday through Wednesday, Halloween night, from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Big Pine Community Park. Bulletin Board. Sponsored by the News-Barometer and the Rotary Club. |
I like the idea of a “Reality Parking” show. Why not? The Winn Dixie lot in Big Pine sounds like a perfect venue. |
[The Internet] In 1969, the first connection on ARPANET (which introduced technology that would lead to the Internet) was made between computers at UCLA and Stanford Research Institute. |
I’m not upset because it’s Monday, I’m upset because it’s cold and I have to wear pants! |
[What’s a local] That’s easy. It’s someone who doesn’t bother to look at the latest FTR rant. |
A Windows 8 phone survey of nearly 1,200 adults in the U.S.found 52 percent hadn’t even heard of Windows 8 leading up to Friday’s release of the redesigned software. Among the people who knew something about the new operating system, 61 percent had little or no interest in buying a new laptop or desktop computer running on Windows 8, according to the poll. And only about a third of people who’ve heard about the new system believe it will be an improvement (35 percent). |
A local is someone who lives here at least 80% of the year, including most of the summer. Bonus points for ignoring “mandatory” hurricane evacuation orders. |
A local is someone who never leaves. |
1950 Chevrolet Club Coupe, 437 original miles, only three owners. When was the last time you saw a 6 volt battery? What got me was the seat covers. Remember? Well you youngsters won’t, but us oldsters will. The oil filter a blue can with yellow top and you could stick a roll of toilet paper in there to filter the oil. The air filter is the oil bath type, the bottom portion is filled with oil and when you cleaned it you replaced the oil and cleaned the sump and mesh wire filter. You could even see the spark plugs if they need to be changed. |
[Backing In] It’s my pickup, I paid for it and will park it in a parking spot as I please! As long as it’s not on top of your auto it should bother you not. |
San Francisco Giants have defeated Detroit Tigers in a World Series sweep. I would’ve preferred a 7 game series; at least the San Fran fans won’t vandalize & set fires to celebrate their win. |
If I had only one year to live, I would spend it with my ex because it would be the longest year of my life. |
72º! It’s so cold I have a sweater and long pants on for the first time this year. Say good bye to summer. I’m originally from the north where we have four seasons. Down here it’s summer one day, and winter the next. |
School District administrator Ken Gentile is getting a five day suspension for using his CPA title on his resume because he didn’t register it in Florida, but the County Administer only gets a letter in his file for dealing in stolen property. Is this justice? |

[Backing in] The other day at BPK Winn Dixie I watched a woman back one of the biggest SUVs they make into a parking space between two other cars using one hand, just as smooth as silk, all the while talking into the cell phone she was holding to her ear with the other hand. Very impressive. |

[Don’t Reverse Park-Save the Children] According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 6,000 people are injured yearly by vehicles that are backing up. Of that number, 2,400 are children, and more than 100 of those children will die as a result of their injuries, according to the child-safety organization Kids and Cars. A reverse parking-assist system, which helps the driver sense when objects are in the vehicle’s “blind spot,” can help prevent these type of accidents. Further, it is estimated that the majority of all reverse and parking accidents could be avoided with the use of a reverse parking-assist system. Link |
If you don’t vote yes for the County Sales Tax extension you are cutting off your nose to spite your face, if you know what I mean. |

The thing about genetically modified foods is that they used to spray the foods with insecticides; BT corn & other new technology puts the insecticide in the seed; no need to spray. But not enough studies can say what will happen to people ingesting this new scenario. Hence, Frankenfood? |
[“Backing into parking spaces“] Most people do this so the cops can’t see your license plate. The two years we lived in Marathon, we always backed in. The reason being we never gave up our S.C. plates. |

[A resume for a laborer is a bit much] Not at all. If they’re paying someone they have a right to ask for reasonable background info. Probably a drug test, too. I would. |
The déjà vu congressional race for Florida’s southernmost district features the same candidates, the same slogans and the same issues as it did two years ago. Except this time it also involves a federal grand jury, a pile of ethics violations and an FBI witness on the lam. Link |

Meet Promachoteuthis sulcus, a bizarre creature straight out of your nightmares. As you can see, this thing looks like it has freakishly human looking teeth. It’s a species of promachoteuthid squid and only one specimen has been found to date. It was captured in the Southern Atlantic Ocean at a depth of 2,000 m in 2007. Just imagine what else is lurking in our oceans! |

[Reasons He Doesn’t Deserve a Second Term] Health-care reform is generally considered the signature accomplishment of President Obama’s first term. Certainly, it is representative of the president’s approach to government: a costly new entitlement funded by higher taxes and more debt. It will result in higher insurance premiums, fewer jobs, and sets the stage for the possible future rationing of care. The Congressional Budget Office now estimates that ObamaCare will cost more than $1.76 trillion by 2022. The qualities that define him — his arrogance, his sense of superiority, and his air of haughtiness — have been on full display as Obama has sought a second term. In the debates and during the final weeks of the campaign, Obama has been prickly and defensive. His cheap shots at Romney (for instance, he mocked Romney for using the phrase “binders full of women”) and his use of the derisive word “Romnesia” have made Obama appear un-presidential, small and unserious. Obama has always had scorn for anyone who disagrees with him. That was particularly obvious in the first debate. By all accounts, Obama doesn’t find joy in being president. Like Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter, he is an introvert who prefers his own company to that of others. Do you vote for presidents who repeatedly lie to you? I don’t. President Obama lied in his 2010 State of the Union Address when he said his administration had “excluded lobbyists from policymaking jobs” (in fact, he had 40 ex-lobbyists then, and 54 now, according to the Washington Examiner’s Timothy P. Carney). He lied that year when he said “We are on the path to cutting our deficits in half,” and he’s lying this year when he says his new plan would cut the deficit by $4.3 trillion (more like $2 trillion). Obama lied when he said his signature health-care plan represented a triumph of the little man over special interests (it was precisely the opposite). He lied when he said the Congressional Budget Office concluded that ObamaCare would reduce the deficit by $1 trillion (it’s complicated, but no), and he, uh, forecasted incorrectly when he insisted that the typical family’s insurance premiums would go down $2,500 a year (they have instead gone up). |
[Lies] Mitt is on the campaign trail breathing fire about Jeep moving production to China. It is so untrue that GM had to release a statement that they are in fact not moving Jeep’s operation to China. This man must be stopped! I wish people voting for Romney could see the line of people who are behind him and would follow him to DC. Mitt only wants to be president because it is closing the biggest deal ever. He doesn’t care about the American people. His daddy didn’t make the cut. It’s like making a deal with the devil and you’re sitting on the beach with a bevy of bathing beauties and the devil shows back up to reap your soul and your reply is, “Oh right, Him.” |
Electing Obama President to resolve the “Bush mess” was like calling the power company when your house catches fire. Re-electing Obama is then like calling the cable company to resolve the “Bush mess”. What’s next, getting Jimmy Carter out of cold storage? Lord help them, for they know not the error of their ways. |
This isn’t just about a clean energy PR campaign. It’s about the money. Wal-Mart announced last year that it saved about $1 million in operating costs after installing solar panels at several of its retail locations. And it’s not the only major retailer that’s seeing the economic benefits of going solar. Combined, these companies’ installations generate about $47.3 million worth of electricity each year and provide enough juice to power 46,500 average American homes. Wal-Mart and Costco alone now have more solar installed on their store rooftops than all of the solar capacity deployed in the state of Florida — and the top ten companies in this list have individually deployed more solar energy than most electric utilities in the United States. Why are the Republicans so against alternative energy and why do they consider it a big waste of money? They can’t see past their noses. Link |
It is truly revealing when one reads the content of postings from the Left side of the aisle, as they realize their sacrosanct ideology is being ripped to shreds by thoughtful folks and old fashioned common sense. One never fail sign is when they always revert back to that old never fail saw “the race card” which they are now displaying with increasing regularity. I surmise that perhaps it makes them feel better about themselves, but in reality it only exposes the vacuous nature of their agenda. |
Obamacare is why I’m voting for our President. I don’t want my healthcare to be subsidized by a discount coupon like McDonalds gives out. |
Do you think it’s possible for the Right to blame Obama for the monster storm hitting the northeast or will they wait until after the storm to cast blame? |

[Keep Obamacare] This is the greatest government idea since Social Security. I won’t benefit because I have excellent healthcare already, but I am a Democrat and care about others. |
Romney‘s war on women & gays must be defeated. Link |
Just because racists say they are not, does not mean they don’t hate the president because of his color. Talking to people in my travels around the state reminds me that racism is alive and thriving. I can only imagine what the bigots are saying in private in the rest of the country. Just because voters are sick of hearing about the ‘race card’ and ‘eight years of Republican policies caused the bad economy’ doesn’t mean it is not true. |
