[Willie Nelson Resurrected] News of guitarist Willie Nelson’s death spread quickly earlier this week causing concern among fans across the world. However the February 2025 report has now been confirmed as a complete hoax and just the latest in a string of fake celebrity death reports. Thankfully, the guitarist best known for hit songs like To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before or Pancho and Lefty is alive and well. Link
[Cold is Coming] Arctic blast grips U.S. as millions face dangerously cold temperatures and ‘life-threatening’ wind chills — but a warm-up is on the way. Even parts of Florida and Texas were forecast to see wind chill readings in the teens to near or below zero on Friday. Link
[Survive] For thousands of years people have known how to grow food, sew clothing, treat sickness with food and herbs, build shelters, and survive. It only took 2 generations to all but erase those skills from humanity and make people completely dependent on the system.
[Spam] Two years ago, I was in L.A. and wanted to donate a new bicycle I had to the Salvation Army. I applied online for a pickup, which they did, but two years later, I’m still getting an email every day asking about it. Be careful who you give your email to, especially non-profits.
Archaeologists uncovered an earthen British fort buried under St. Augustine, Florida, and dated it to between 1763 and 1783. British rule was short-lived in St. Augustine and was sandwiched between Spanish ownership, making the discovery a first of its kind. The only historical remnants found at the site were seeds. Link

[The Cost of a Ketamine High] At recreational doses, ketamine is addictive, destroys the bladder, and is toxic to the central nervous system. Microscopic lesions (including but not limited to so-called “Olney’s lesions”) in both grey and white matter are evident already after three months of high-dose ketamine use. By year three of heavy use, MRI scans of ketamine users often reveal a brain that looks like a mix between multiple sclerosis (white matter lesions) and Alzheimer’s disease (grey matter atrophy). The historic vessel, Schooner Hindu, will celebrate her 100th anniversary on Sunday, March 16, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the foot of Margaret Street, in the Key West bight. The public is invited to attend this free event. Designed by William Hand, built in East Booth Bay, Maine, and first launched in 1925, the wooden Schooner Hindu has recently emerged beautifully from a four-year restoration project. The hull and the bulwarks gleam like fine furniture. The gold filigree sparkles. After this four-year hiatus, the captain and crew are eager to again sail in Key West, Hindu’s winter home for twenty years. Hindu’s history includes a stint sailing to India to purchase spices for trade in Boston. Along the way, the vessel was christened “Hindu,” and the name stuck. Later, during World War II, Hindu was commandeered by the Navy to serve as a scout for German U-boats along the eastern seaboard. With a machine gun mounted to her foredeck and sonar below, the then gray-painted hull was lined with depth charges. After her WWII service she was purchased by Al Avellar, a storied captain who launched the first whale-watching trips in Provincetown under her billowing sails. She has summered in Provincetown ever since. Whether in Key West or Provincetown, Hindu offers day sails, sunset sails, weddings and private charters to a discerning clientele who appreciate its rarity, beauty and history.

[Gaming] Partnering with the Shawnee Tribe for Civilization VII. With each Civilization title, we take great care to thoughtfully and authentically portray every culture on our roster of civilizations and leaders. During the development of Civilization VII, Firaxis Games reached out to Ben Barnes, chief of the Shawnee Tribe, to discuss the possibility of incorporating Shawnee history into the game. By chance, Chief Barnes is a longtime fan of strategy games, including the Civilization series, and these conversations eventually blossomed into an ongoing relationship of shared knowledge and resources which not only led to more accurate and meaningful in-game depictions, but also real gains in preserving Shawnee language and culture for future generations. Orchid’s nutrient theft from fungi sheds light on photosynthesis-parasitism continuum. Most orchids live in a symbiotic relationship with fungi in their roots: The plants provide sugar they produce through photosynthesis and in return receive water and minerals from the fungi. However, some orchids have stopped producing their own food and completely feed on fungi. Link

It rained Monday all day. It had been so long that I’d seen rain, that I thought Heaven had sprung a leak.
[Farming Fog] Scientists want to farm fog to solve the water crisis. Researchers may have just found a way to establish a renewable water resource in one of the driest places in the world. Using pieces of mesh, these fog-harvesting machines collect water droplets and funnel them into storage tanks. Fog-harvesting systems aren’t just a small-scale solution; they could be a practical, reliable water system for cities. Link
