I’m really getting into the Thanksgiving spirit this year. I gave the bird to 4 people yesterday just between my house and Quicker Liquor. |
Why dogs usually can’t tell what you’re pointing at. New research on canine spacial bias suggests that ‘smarter’ dogs are more resilient in learning where an object is located. Link |
[80% Charge] I see most smart devices like laptops, tablets and phones now have the option to optimize your battery by charging it to 80% only. But wouldn’t this reduce your capacity i.e. your brand new battery now only has 80% of its rated capacity, which means more frequent recharge and all that. Even if you do charge it to 100% for the occasional road trips or whatever reason that you need to have the battery to last longer, I still don’t see the real benefit of capping your battery charge at 80%. I’m trying to make my battery last longer, but then I have to lose 20% of its capacity first, so what the heck, I’d rather just charge it to full every time and let the battery deteriorate annually. Am I confusing what “last longer” means? Link |
[Arthritis] Clinical trials of novel arthritis repair. According to the U.S. government, there are 2.5 million* joint replacement surgeries in the United States each year and even more patients are looking for alternatives to delay or avoid a prosthesis. The Department of Biomedicine at the University of Basel and the University Hospital Basel, have announced that it delivered the first surgical procedure to treat Osteoarthritis (OA) in humans. The procedure called Nasal Chondrocyte Tissue-Engineered Cartilage, or N-TEC, provides an innovative alternative to cure confined knee cartilage lesions as well as to address degenerative OA cases that have to date required knee joint replacements – prosthetics that routinely need replacing after 15-20 years. [Build Permits Stopped in Islamorada] Islamorada is halting new building permits. Yikes! Is this a precursor to the ROGO system governing most of Monroe County? |

[Dr Troxel is Retiring] I don’t trust anyone else to fill my shoes except Dr. Chris Forsee, D.M.D. – the one who will carry the Key Smiles torch into the future and fill my (mostly missing) shoes. Dr. Forsee has over 25 years of experience in comprehensive dentistry, is highly competent, compassionate and also LOVES the Keys as much as I do. Rest easy, you are in exceptionally good hands. Yours truly, Dr. Fred Troxel, D.D.S |
[The Boob Tube] It’s finally happened, TV has become so boring and stupid that finally I got a life! |

[Black Friday Roundup] Get ready for this week’s big shopping day. The term Black Friday, as it refers to the shopping day after Thanksgiving, originated in 1950s Philadelphia, when suburban shoppers, along with people in town for the Army-Navy football game traditionally held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, Nationally the term didn’t catch on until the 1980s, when retailers seized on the term and gave it a more positive meaning. Today, Black Friday means deals and discounts and the biggest pre-Christmas shopping day of the year. Link Samsung 23.5” CF396 Curved Computer Monitor, list $189.99, is marked down to $139.99 |
[Breakthrough Battery] Northvolt Labs, in Västerås, Sweden develops state-of-the-art sodium-ion battery validated at 160 Wh/kg. Following a breakthrough in technology, Northvolt is proud to add sodium-ion to its cell portfolio, enabling the expansion of cost-efficient and sustainable energy storage systems worldwide. Link |
[Vegas] Formula One race car cracks a drain cover during Las Vegas Grand Prix practice run. The first practice run lasted less than 10 minutes after Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari encountered a literal bump in the road, with the race halted for several hours. A litany of issues has plagued Formula One’s highly anticipated (and derided) Las Vegas Grand Prix race for months, but the event’s most recent issues are perhaps its most ridiculous yet—the cars on-average 212 mph speeds are too fast for the Vegas Strip. [Expensive Booze] World’s ‘most sought-after’ whisky sells for $2.7 million. The Macallan 1926 is one of just 40 bottles drawn after ageing in sherry casks for 60 years, making it the oldest Macallan vintage ever produced, according to the auction house. Sotheby’s had expected it to raise between $934,274 and $1.4 million, but were in for a shock when the prized bottle fetched a whopping $2,724,967), making it a new record for any bottle of spirit or wine sold at auction. |

[Stalin Suffering] Mr. Jones trailer. I am a Kulak. I never knew until I watched this movie. My mother was taken at age 14, from the family farm and place in one of Hitler’s camps as a forced laborer. She used to say many cryptic things to me I never understood and she’d never explain. My mom told me that the very young and the very old struggled, that if someone did not hop a fence to steal and apple or dig up a potato to give to them, they starved to death. She said, they ate bark. A line in the movie. Video |
[Slide Guitar Shovel] Crankin’ up the 3-string shovel guitar! After building hundreds of these shovel guitars, I’ve actually never kept one for myself. I always end up selling the one I’m playing after a show, and then build a new one. When a tattoo artist contacted me on Instagram wanting to paint one for me, I sent him a blank shovel, and he created a masterpiece on it! Video |
