[Voluntary $90,000 Pay Cut] Raymond Burse, interim president of Kentucky State University in Frankfort, who is taking the pay cut so the lowest-paid workers on his campus can get a wage boost. Burse is a true hero. I’ve never seen a big shot who thought he had enough money and gave a damn about the little guy. Link |

This black snake was sunning itself on the bike path in Cudjoe Key. He had his head hidden in the grass pulling an “ostrich” so no one would see him. It didn’t work. |
[“Back up your HD to external HD, disk, or to the cloud“] It is a back up, but you are still depending on electrical machines to get to your information. Once the power is off or the machines break, then what do you have, nothing. Even CD and DVD cannot be used without the electric machines. Anybody have a good mechanical typewriter for sale? A box of pencils? |
[No Halloween] There are four or five major plagues going around and if one of those is in our Keys Halloween might be a bad idea for kids to spread germs. My kids are smart enough to understand and won’t go out trick or treating! That says something good for the cell phones they gawk at all day, they learn things! |

[“Round house on Cudjoe Key“] It is not even done. It looks like this house is going to be built right. It looks structurally sound. All the shoring is so thye can pour the floor. You must be jealous! Wait until it is done. you’re putting the cart before the horse in condemning it. |

[“A ‘sheep’ who follows my savior Jesus”] I think things are skewered when a person who questions mystics, miracles, religion, and spirits is looked upon as an oddball outsider and the person who believes in all that hocus pocus is considered mainstream. In the far future, civilization will look back on this anomaly called faith and wonder what we were thinking? Similar to how we look back at the Inquisition and witch trials now. |
[“USI radio’s music”] A friend of mine visiting from the mainland and listening to US-1 radio on the way to Key West asked me if they get their music from albums that they found at yard sales. |

Has anyone else not signed their easement for the sewer hookup? Any comments that will happen to us if we do not sign this? |
What is the big deal on the Cudjoe house there are a number of round houses in the lower Keys. At least one on each side of the highway on Little Torch. |

[“Round House”] If you do some research into building construction you will find the the strongest homes are circular in design. This design does not allow wind loads to build on any single wall. The house under construction will be the last home standing in a storm where standard homes would be damaged. The builders have done their research and are smart to construct a storm resistant home. You can get a better idea on these buildings at Deltec Homes. These folks design and build circular homes. I would seriously consider a Deltec if my home was destroyed by a storm. Link |
There are now 4 opportunities for extreme vacations. Forget the wussy, canned, thrill vacations around some zip line. These are the ultimate: – 3 weeks in Israel working for the Israeli Military – Vacation in Ukraine working for the Russian Insurgents – Extended vacation in the emerging Islamic State fighting for Allah all over Iraq and Syria. – Or, conversely, fighting alongside Syrian rebels in Syria. – Vacation with the Kurdish Peshmerga while fighting both ISIS and Turks. |
What if your new neighbor’s bucket list dream turns out to be your worst nightmare? Will the County be there for you to defend your rights to privacy, noise ordnance, destroyed environment and appearance? Don’t bet on it. |

[“3 inevitable things”] I think we can add lightning strike to that list. We had one about a month ago and it wiped out telephone, TV, internet, a number of appliances, and one of the computers. Luckily the computer motherboard or power supply took the brunt of it for the computer. We bought a small external drive enclosure and moved the old computer hard drive to it. We were quite pleased when it worked, and immediately started copying files off it. Thanks for the advice, it is just a matter of time. |
Funny, we voted Sunday too, but it was at the rear entrance to Eco Center. They said only Republicans could vote Sunday. Seemed legit. |

[Retort] Dear Mayor and Commissioners: Please consider this email my electronic signature requesting that you disregard yesterday’s poster and not vote to direct FKAA to immediately begin the design, permitting, and construction of a deep well for the Cudjoe Wastewater Treatment Plant. As constituents and taxpayers, we support a thorough analysis of whether a deep well is even required before spending $7m of our tax dollars on something that may not be as important as affordable housing, canal restoration, or other urgent matters. Thank you |
This extended height referendum isn’t about rising waters, it’s ostensibly about hurricane tidal surges, which were well known in the Keys before Henry Flagler built the railroad; one tidal surge in a horrible hurricane killed hundreds of railroad workers and relatives around Islamorada. |

[Government Planning] It’s a crying shame old Ronnie Reagan isn’t around to manage all of these crises we are facing. He had a sure fire way of dealing with such problems, so it says here: “Former Reagan chief of staff Donald T. Regan said an astrologer had set the time for summit meetings, presidential debates, Reagan’s 1985 cancer surgery, State of the Union addresses and much more. Without an O.K. from the astrologer, he said, Air Force One did not take off.” ~From the NYT obituary of White House astrologer Joan Quigley |

[“Round House”] Rates are high enough to insure your home in the Keys and I certainly would not want to pay the higher insurance premium on an unconventional style home in the Keys. These types of buildings are in a higher risk pool classification. And don’t forget when you are ready to move on and sell, you will need a cash buyer because it is difficult, if not impossible, to secure insurance protection on a unconventional style home in the Keys when you need financing to purchase one. Or you just won the lotto and could care less! |

[Sewers] Given how many people’s good efforts toward Cudjoe Regional being the best sewer district environmentally and money-wise have gone up to now, I hazard a wild guess that you are peeing and pooping upwind, if you are expecting any favorable response. That translates into a 180 degree course change from a majority of the County Commissioners? I hazard another wild guess that the only immediate chance to get all of the commissioners’ attention is for the voters to elect Eleanor McAdams, instead of 4-term incumbent Commissioner George Neugent, in whose voting district Cudjoe Regional lies entirely. Even in that event, I hazard yet another wild guess that a majority of the commissioners will try to laugh it off. How the County Commissioners have approached Cudjoe Regional so far, is tragic |

Hannah Lowe, a Freshman at Marathon High School, of Big Pine Key, FL has been nominated to attend the Congress of Future Medical Leaders in Washington, DC on November 14, 15 and 16th, 2014. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields. The purpose of this event is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be physicians or medical scientists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal.
Hannah was nominated by Dr. Connie Mariano, the Medical Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists to represent FL based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and determination to serve humanity in the field of medicine. During the three-day Congress, Hannah will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners talk about leading medical research;be given advice from Ivy League and top medical school deans on what is to expect in medical school; witness stories told by patients who are living medical miracles; be inspired by fellow teen medical science prodigies; and learn about cutting-edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology. “This is a crucial time in America when we need more doctors and medical scientists who are even better prepared for a future that is changing exponentially,” said Richard Rossi, Executive Director, National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. “Focused, bright and determined students like Hannah Lowe are our future and she deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give her.” The Academy offers free services and programs to students who want to be physicians or go into medical science. Some of the services and programs the Academy plans to launch in 2014 and 2015 are online social networks through which future doctors and medical scientists can communicate; opportunities for students to be guided and mentored by physicians and medical students; and communications for parents and students on college acceptance and finances, skills acquisition, internships, career guidance and much more. The National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists was founded on the belief that we must identify prospective medical talent at the earliest possible age and help these students acquire the necessary experience and skills to take them to the doorstep of this vital career. Based in Washington, D.C., the Academy was chartered as a nonpartisan, taxpaying institution to help address this crisis by working to identify, encourage and mentor students who wish to devote their lives to the service of humanity as physicians, medical scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians. |

This height referendum is really illogical. The only way Key West will be saved from sea level rise is for the Dutch to come here and build dikes. 60% of The Netherlands is below sea level. After building the dikes all the way around Key West they will have to build dikes for the rest of the Keys. Impossible within the time frame of global warming and sea level rise predictions. Instead of cars, boats would be the modes of transportation. |
Maybe round houses are just the thing for the Keys? After a 130 mph hurricane, my house twisted enough in the wind to have had the tie beams re-poured. This time they used 7000 lb Shotcrete . The bill was $30,000. A round house can’t twist, no matter which way the wind blows. |
To the Colson round house guy, go for it. Your place will probably end up being more practical for you to live in than some of the cutesy joints around here that are designed to look enviably impressive from the street but are chopped up and awkward inside. |
How dare American racists join the fight against peace loving Islam in Syria? The FBI should house arrest their families and their citizenship be revoked and DOJ start a watch list for warmongering racist Christian Americans. Oh, don’t leave us with this terrible threat Mr. Atty Gen Holder. Please stay and bring the full weight of the DOJ down on these Crusader Christian swine! |
Last week I wrote the letters regarding the plan to house the Mosquito Control Finance Department on Big Coppitt instead of at the Marathon headquarters where all other executive and support departments are located. This weekend, Ms Patricia Mousseau, responded that my letter was filled with errors. I would suggest to Ms Mousseau, who failed to identify herself as one of the employees referenced in the letter, that there was no error in any of my statements.
The Big Coppitt property and building plan was always for operations’ personnel in the lower Keys. It was not anticipated that the Finance Department would be there. I did a review of the original plans and the plans that were modified to meet the demands of the Finance Department employees who did not want to commute to the headquarters location on Marathon. I attended the Board meeting at which this issue was discussed and pointed out that the Board had the opportunity to design an organizational structure and footprint that was efficient and cost effective, using the surplus space at the Marathon location. Instead, they opted to spend about $500,000 more to expand the building beyond its reasonable site capacity, while leaving the Marathon headquarters only partially utilized. The scheme is so absurd that in order to meet the County Code for minimal parking, employees will need to park three deep. Think about it, operating locations in the lower, middle and upper Keys with the management team, support departments and aerial assets in Marathon. It makes perfect sense unless you let the tail wag the dog. |

Asian carp have been a popular food fish in Asia for thousands of years. However, many people in North America associate Asian carp with common carp, a bottom feeding, highly bony species which was introduced from Eurasia in the 1800s and is not widely regarded as food.
The pearly white flesh—complicated by a series of bones—is said to taste like cod or described as tasting like a cross between scallops and crabmeat. They are low in mercury because they do not eat other fish. To make the fish more appealing to American consumers, the fish have been renamed silverfin or Kentucky tuna. Volunteer efforts to increase the popularity further include making and selling carp-based dishes and using the entrails to make fertilizer. Some have thought to collect the carp eggs for caviar, since one bighead carp was found with over 2 million eggs. Two million eggs from one fish could fill two jars of caviar, which would be quite valuable. This is only true, however, in the case of a fish from which people would eat eggs. As of now, there is no market for carp eggs in America, though there is a movement that is trying to increase the popularity of carp eggs in Europe. |
[Ebola] It is a good idea to quarantine health care workers returning from infected places. But! They should be treated like the heroes they are and have all their expenses paid for those 21 days. Whoever orders the quarantine should foot the entire bill. |
[“Round house”] Maybe it’s going to be a geodesic dome home? |
[Ebola] If I wish to import a horse into the United States from Liberia or any African country other than Morocco , the horse needs to undergo a 60 day quarantine period at a USDA approved quarantine facility prior to mingling with the general population of horses in this country. Africa has a disease called African Horse Sickness that does not exist in the US ; this is the way we have kept it out of this country. African Horse Sickness does not cause disease in people, only horses; our government has determined that it would be devastating to the US horse industry if it were to come here.
The United States (and virtually all other countries) require a myriad of tests and often quarantine prior to bringing in a foreign animal. I can’t legally cross state lines in the United States with a horse or cow without a health certificate signed by a USDA accredited veterinarian stating that the animal has been inspected and found free of infectious disease. In most cases blood tests are also required. In fact I can’t legally cross the Snake River and ride my horse in Idaho without a health certificate and a negative blood test for Equine Infectious Anemia. I’m not complaining; the United States of America , the States of Idaho and Washington as well as the other 48 states take the health of our livestock very seriously, and we have a very good record at keeping foreign animal diseases out of our country. I am happy to do my part to maintain biosecurity in our animal population. If I am a resident of Liberia incubating Ebola, to enter the United States all I need to do is present a valid visa, and lie when asked if I have been exposed to Ebola. Within hours (no quarantine required) I can be walking the streets of any city in the United States I feel very fortunate to live in a country that values our animals so highly |

[Beer Bottle Music] What to do once you’ve finished all the beer! Video |
No way would I vote for Goodman for Mosquito Control. Goodman has huge signs all over the place, which is always a bad indicator. Who is footing the bill that wants him in that badly? Goodman was reportedly appointed by Gov. Rick Scott, which is another hugely bad indicator. Kick Rick Scott out, too. Goodman boasts of his chemical industry background. With Big Chem ties, you know why some want to see him on the board. Goodman said he is enthusiastic about releasing GMO Franken-skeeters in your neighborhood and amongst the endangered wildlife. That is insane to release a human genetic creation anywhere- he needs to read more than the feel-good GMO promotional literature. I will be voting for Lyinda Schuh who has none of the big negatives above. Roger is a way better choice than Goodman, but I think Lynda is the best by a good measure. ~halloween@contractor.net |

I don’t know how anyone cold ever vote Republican. They have sworn to try to do everything to ruin the Obama Presidency. The results are that they have brought the country to a halt and it’s all for their own benefit, let America be damned. |
“America has one national creed, but many accents. We are now one of the largest Spanish-speaking nations in the world. We’re a major source of Latin music, journalism, and culture. Just go to Miami, or San Antonio, Los Angeles, Chicago, or West New York, New Jersey… and close your eyes and listen. You could just as easily be in Santo Domingo or Santiago, or San Miguel de Allende. For years our nation has debated this change – some have praised it and others have resented it. By nominating me, my party has made a choice to welcome the new America.” ~G.W.Bush
Then he announced his plan for millions of illegal aliens’ amnesty. Also don’t forget one of the leading Conservatives running for office told us: “They come here for love”. ~Jeb Bush
What has changed to cause Republicans to so drastically oppose any immigration reform? I know. It’s their stated goal to reject anything President Obama proposes in order to make his presidency look bad. The country suffers because of Republicans’ hate. |

As if the GOP/FTR guy needed more reasons to hate Obama, the President says his Ebola policy will be guided by “science”. Oh no, science! |
Yesterday a person named Gary Schwartz posted a diatribe against FKMCD incumbent and candidate for reelection Phil Goodman. First let’s look at Mr. Schwartz’s bona fides.
Schwartz had been a long term employee of FKMCD. It would not be proper for me to comment on his work ethic. But we can consider a couple of interesting events in Mr. Schwartz’s employment history. Perhaps we can draw some conclusions as to Mr. Schwartz’s motivation for his posting. Mr. Schwartz applied for appointment to the FKMCD board at the same time that Mr. Goodman applied. You might find it interesting, or even amusing, to know that as a part of the application process, Mr. Swartz was interviewed by the editorial board of a local newspaper. During that interview he bragged that he knew where waste and inefficiencies existed in FKMCD, and that he was best qualified to remedy that waste and inefficiency. The editorial board rejected Mr. Schwartz. After an extensive vetting process, Mr. Goodman won that appointment. Subsequently Mr. Schwartz was asked to share his information concerning waste and inefficiency with FKMCD management. Mr. Schwartz stated that he “didn’t want to talk about it.” But when FKMCD management began effecting economies, Mr. Schwartz was a vocal opponent of the economies. At one point he warned that the employees were being overworked and that further economies would lead to employees falsifying their reports and they would engage in a work “slowdown”. At another point, while still in the employ of the FKMCD, Schwartz applied for a position on the employee’s retirement board. He was rejected. Not long thereafter, he retired. It certainly appears that Mr. Schwartz was a disgruntled employee, and blames Mr. Goodman for his perceived injustices. It is puzzling that Mr. Schartz, in his posting, would complain bitterly that the FKMCD is doing a better job today than it did in the past, with less expense to you and me, the taxpayers of Monroe County. It’s worth noting that when Mr. Goodman was appointed to the Board, he became a hands on commissioner. In order to learn the realities of the problems facing FKMCD and its staff, he accompanied many of the various staffers during the course of their duties. Mr. Goodman was a prime mover in the economies that the FKMCD now enjoys. Contrary to Mr. Schwartz’s suggestion, FKMCD is doing a sterling job. Working with various suppliers and vendors they have and are developing new products to keep the Keys healthy, comfortable, and it’s mosquito population under control. It’s worth noting that there has not been a single reported case of Dengue fever or Chikungunya for the last 3 years. That’s just about the time that FKMCD set about becoming a more efficient and more effective public health utility. That’s also just about the time that Phil Goodman was appointed to the FKMCD Board. Monroe County needs Phil Goodman on the Board, please vote for him. |
