[Ads, Ads, and More Ads] Google App Store (Google Play) is loaded with ads. Search results for an app I want are now listed under another app that I don’t want. Also, YouTube has so many ads you can hardly find what you were searching for. They used to show results clearly on the left with other options in the column on the right. Now they are all mixed together with ads and a real mess just to get more ads in front of our face. I think eventually people will get fed up with the bombardment of ads and find other places to get what they want. Something’s got to change. You look at something on one site and the ads for it chase you to other sites you visit.

[Keeping Women Silent] The Taliban has banned women from hearing other women’s voices in its latest attempt to impose a hardline version of Islamic law on Afghanistan. In a rambling voice message on Monday, the country’s minister for the promotion of virtue and prevention of vice announced the bizarre new restriction on women’s behavior. Do the Taliban stay up nights thinking of new ways to repress women? Keeping woman silent sounds like a bad joke about marriage. Link
[Dill Pickle Candy Corn] What’s the world coming to?
[Ballot Box Fires] Police in Washington and Oregon are searching for a dark-colored sedan, the driver of which they believe is responsible for setting fires at ballot drop boxes in what appears to be a serious case of attempted election interference. Link

[Sign Language] I’m starting school next week to learn, and then teach sign language for deaf people. It’s for sex education.
[Recycling Wind Turbines]Two Dutch companies, however, recently proposed new ways to repurpose a wind turbine’s physically largest  and most cumbersome pieces into tiny houses, boats, and more. Link
[The Presidency] As democracy is perfected, the office of the President represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day, the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be occupied by a downright fool and a complete narcissistic moron.
~H.L. Mencken, The Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920
[Browsers] After reading about it here I switched browsers to DuckDuckGo and the number of ads I receive are negligible. It does block all tracking attempts. In the past 7 days it has blocked 3,657 tracking attempts. I should have switched browsers years ago. It’s as fast as any other browser and the search is just as fast as Google. Link
Why McDonald’s E. coli outbreak could be a sign of more to come. Since September, the tainted burgers have led to at least 10 hospitalizations and one death across at least 10 states. There have been at least 49 E.coli cases linked to the burgers nationwide, though that figure could be larger since some people recover from infections on their own without contacting healthcare authorities 2024 has been a rough year for food safety.  Link
Phil Lesh, bassist for Grateful Dead, dies at 84. Lesh the bassist for the Grateful Dead propelled many of its wildest musical explorations yet also composed and sang one of its loveliest songs, “Box of Rain”. Link
[Fishing & Hunting] Amendment 2 is a threat to private property rights. Florida Amendment 2 threatens to enable hunters to trespass onto your property in pursuit of the animals they want to kill. Even though the planet has lost 69% of its wildlife over the past 50 years, this Amendment 2 would create a fundamental right in the Florida Constitution to Hunt and Fish using “traditional methods.” Amendment 2 is a threat to Marine Populations. Amendment 2 could be used to override protections for fish stocks such as effectively nullifying the prohibition on Gill Nets that are a wall of death in the sea.
[Homer’s Job] has answered a long-running question throughout the show’s 35-year history involving Homer Simpson and his job at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant. Link

[Big Mouth] Burmese pythons stretch their mouths even wider than we thought possible. Watching an invasive apex predator swallow a full-sized deer in front of you is something that you will never forget. Link

[Drinking without A/C in your house] Have to put a drink holder next to my desk that catches the condensation from my iced drinks so it doesn’t wet my computer stuff.
Drink coasters have to have sides to contain the condensation.
You can’t put iced drinks on the arms of upholstered furniture because they will darken with mildew from the condensation left by the glass.
When you lift your drink to your lips you have to wipe the bottom first, or the condensation will drip on your chest making you look like you’re drooling.
They say not to drink faster than your ice melting. The ice should melt and the drink should be drained at the same time. The problem is you have to drink too fast because the ice melts before you can say even piña colada.
Insulated glasses are too thick and made from special glass that doesn’t feel right on teeth or lips.
The reality of buying a cheap old house on Instagram. From Germany to Japan, people are buying up draughty churches, leaky hotels and asbestos-filled schools for peanuts and turning them into dream homes. They can be as big as 40,000 sq ft – but are they always a great deal? Link
[Civil War] A presidential election then agitated the North. Mr. Lincoln represented the national cause, and General McClellan had accepted the nomination of the Democratic party, whose platform was that the war was a failure, and that it was better to allow the South to go free to establish a separate government, whose corner-stone should be slavery.
