[Lobster Season Opens Today Not Yesterday!] You have posted some misinformation regarding the opening date of the regular lobster season. Please repost that the starting date is August 6th and not August 5th. If you have any questions please contact Michelle Brownlee at 305-289-2320. Thank you, FWC Law Enforcement |
[“Legalize casitas”] Casitas do not get wrapped in or cut off by props as traps do. Casitas do not prevent you from motoring safely after dark as traps do. Casitas do not trap indiscriminately as traps do. Casitas provide habitat for many forms of sea life. Casitas take pressure off the coral reef. Casitas made from non toxic materials and placed appropriately are beneficial to the aquatic environment as well as mankind. Viva casitas! |
Uh… this family thinks their dog’s butt looks like Jesus wearing a robe. |
I truly hope the owner of a local eatery understands the damage he is about to reap to his business.. Dane W. should have kept his opinion on peoples’ rights to himself, especially being a federal felon. Financially it’s going to hurt. ~naturalmark@gmail.com |
[Sewer Connection] I feel obliged to point out that if your friend connects the sewer for free with your free labor, of course it’ll be cheaper than if a licensed plumber who has to make a profit does it. There can be no comparison of costs as no comparison exist. |

[Name That Bird] It’s taken me, like forever, to get a picture of this little guy. Does anyone know what it’s called? |
[“Wasps Nests”] Was the writer talking about mud wasps or the stinging wasps? I don’t know of any preventive stuff you can apply to your joists. If they’re mud wasp you can just knock them down because they don’t sting. If it’s the stinging kind call you neighbor ask for a favor and tell him you hurt you back and can’t remove the nests. |
[“Spam at War”] I had an uncle that was a rear gunner on a Grumman Torpedo plane in the Pacific in WW2. I can still remember him saying that his shipmates wanted to do one more bombing run when they were back in the States – a bombing run on the Spam plant. Apparently that was the meal of choice and at sea the only choice, for far too many months/years. Another of our Greatest Generation gone, but I still fondly remember him. |
Maine lobster sucks. There’s nothing like a fresh Keys Kanal Krustacean, headed, cleaned and tossed onto a hot grill while the tail is still moving. They steam up in the salt water just right. |
Lobster season starts on August 6th every year. You misprinted the post from Fanci Seafood. (Ed: Yipes, I knew that, but the angels told me to print Aug 5. To all those who got them yesterday, please put them back.) |

Is it legal to spray the grounds around your property with kerosene to kill bugs? Nothing else seems to keep away the ants, millipedes, roaches, lizards, and wild cats. It has to be better than spraying Roundup or other poisons! |
[Sloan Not A Lawyer] One of the panelists at last night Hometown PAC candidate forum led off the mayor candidates part saying that he had contacted the Alabama Bar Association and they said they had no record of Sloan Bashinsky having practiced law in Alabama.
Sloan’s reply: Roll of Attorneys of the Supreme Court of Alabama, they have: Sloan Y. Bashinsky, II April 22,1968 Birmingham, Alabama. Julia Weller, Clerk of the Supreme Court of Alabama’s office said April 22, 1968 was the date of my admittance to the Alabama Supreme Court. She said that had nothing to do with whether or not I actually practiced law in Alabama. I said I knew that, but it proved I was admitted to the Alabama Supreme Court. I said I practiced from 1973 to 1985 in Birmingham, did Continuing Legal Education. |
Does anyone know why Winn Dixie Fuel Perks are not working at any of the local Shell Stations? I’ve tried 4 Shell stations from Big Pine to Stock Island in the last 5 weeks and none of them have working W-D Fuel Perks. You can’t use them and they expire at the end of the month. |
Tonight is Uke Night at Coconuts. 7pm. Even George Harrison will be there (in spirit). |
[False Arrest] When you are sitting at home watching TV and doing nothing wrong, what do you do if the cops bust into your house, search everywhere, arrest you and take you to jail? Do you have a plan of defense? Do you have a lawyer handy? Do you have your health cards and meds with you? Can you sue them for making a mistake and scaring the hell out of you and your family? If not, why not? |

[Scandal] Why would FKCC President be on the board of a private for profit university? And why didn’t he bother to mention it on the FKCC website? Isn’t that something to be proud of, or is there more to it? Link |
The next politician that bitches about environmental regulations should be handed a bottle of Toledo tap water! |
[“Best westerns”] The Magnificent Seven was an American version of Seven Samurai by the great director Akira Kurosawa, where a poor village under attack by bandits recruits seven unemployed samurai to help them defend themselves. Watch the original 1954 film to see really great directing. There’s not one lull in the film’s progress. |
[Opinions] One has to wonder what those who criticize FTR and /or Fox News have to do with their time. If either are as bad as they would have us believe (according to their posts), why listen, read, or tune into to this right-wing hysteria? I enjoy good honest views which are not my own. If a person has a valid point or reason for an opinion, I was taught to evaluate it as best I was able. In my 40 plus years of voting, I have voted for both parties, always viewing what the candidate had accomplished, not what he said he would accomplish. Fox News challenges you to think, so I watch and think. Do I agree? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. FTR accomplishes the same process, he makes you think. As an American I would hope all voting Americans think. Not about themselves, not about who gives them the most handouts, not who promises what he can not deliver, but who will govern this country of ours the best for all Americans. |
I read bigpinekey.com every day. I have this little problem–I count things. When someone responds to a comment, I count all the responses. Deer Ed changed the Contact Us link to post a comment to make it simpler for new readers.
When I get to the politics section I stop and mentally add up how many times I read the whole line. Often it’s 8 times. How many times do you read the whole thing? I think it would be funny for him to post just a little bit of comedy in a few of them, or ask at the end, “how many times did you read this?” Is anyone else reading them all too? |

[“Brown Recluse. The spiders were taken to the University of Miami and positively identified”] Believe me, that would be a big deal to scientists there considering the species does not occur in Florida. There have been no documented cases of bites from Brown Recluse that originated here. None. What you are talking about is anecdote and conjecture. There are hundreds of conditions that look like nasty spider bites, but are not. I can’t count how many people have told me they or someone they know was bitten by one. It just isn’t so. Or at least highly, very highly improbable. |
Wanted. Used refrigerator, mine is on the blink! Also looking for a used kitchen countertop. If you are remodeling, I would like to buy your old one, especially if it has a sink, for outdoor use. Classified Ads > Wanted |
Vacationing vagrant enjoying the good life in Key West. He had a great time during lobster mini season and is looking forward to next year |
Sloan may listen to angels, but unlike most politicians, he doesn’t think he is God. |

[“Wasps nests”] Flamethrowers are very effective, but generally only considered for CBS houses. |
Is there any chance at all that Ebola is spread by texting? If so we are in deep trouble. |
[Name That Plant] Is this seed pod that of a black mangrove? |
[Sloan has my vote] To be quite honest, It doesn’t bother me at all that Sloan isn’t afraid of, and is openly honest enough to mention his dreams with Angels who guide him. Is this really so bad? He’s the only person who made sense throughout the entire debate with the other two candidates. Most of you openly confess to feeling and believing in a God no one has ever seen before. The hypocrisy is unbelievable. Especially that in the bible there are plenty of stories of people who were approached by angels and were guided to greatness. Maybe Sloan is holier than thou, but all I can say as an atheist, is this will not stop me from voting for Sloan Bashinsky. I truly believe that Sloan will do a lot of good for K.W., the kind of change all of you here cry about that you want done so badly. Well here’s your chance people. Don’t let it slip away. |

Best Western of all time? No contest – Blazing Saddles had all the necessary components of life In the old West! |
Yesterday’s CT (August 5th) had several posters saying “lobster season opens today”. Am I nuts or does lobster season open August 6th not the 5th? |
[“Wasp nests under house”] Have you thought of painting the underneath of the house (floor trusses) light blue? They did this on the old conch homes as various flying insects want to hide and the blue color simulates the sky. With this in mind, they find another place that is more “hidden” for them |
[Gun Nuts] Attention all you pistol packin’ gun nuts. According to that big government tool, the FBI, In 2010, across the nation there were only 230 justifiable homicides involving a private citizen using a firearm reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program as detailed in its Supplementary Homicide Report (SHR). That same year, there were 8,275 criminal gun homicides tallied in the SHR. In 2010, for every justifiable homicide in the United States involving a gun, guns were used in 36 criminal homicides.
And this ratio, of course, does not take into account the thousands of lives ended in gun suicides (19,392) or unintentional shootings (606) that year. In other words, the chance of you getting your ‘dream shot’ is pretty remote. On the other hand, the likelihood of your piece being involved in some tragedy is much more of a reality. I hope you liked all the facts and figures. |
[Two Scoops] This 11-minute shoot ’em up by director Robert Rodrigues (Sin City) is about two sisters who run an ice cream truck by day and battle aliens by night. Rodriguez was hired by Blackberry 10, to make the film, but it didn’t save the company. Video |
[“Deer fence and overpasses”] Yeah, why is the speed limit only 35 at night on that fence-protected stretch of highway. I want to know! We spent millions building that stretch of road in order to protect the deer. If it is not working tear it down, it’s an eyesore. If it is working raise the speed limit to 45mph at night! |

[Term Limits] For those of you who are tired of a U.S. Congress who are being paid and doing nothing, there is a website you should be checking out. Someone has taken the time to put together an initiative using Article 5 for term limits in the U.S. Congress, and people can sign the electronic form available through that site, making it extremely easy! There are also related sites on Facebook. All the heavy work is done; only your signature is required! Take the opportunity to help make real change – sign the petition and pass on the information. Brown recluse spiders do live here! My friend on Cudjoe Key was diagnosed as having been bit by one, a dozen years ago. His flesh was eaten away; it was a very bad situation. He did survive. |
[“Friend could connect sewer for $250”] Did your friend ever try pulling a building permit in Monroe County? I somehow doubt it, or he would know that the fee that the County charges is very high. He failed to give you, or you, failed to give us his estimate for the permitting process.
Has your friend ever used a rented back hoe to dig through even a foot of cap rock? I doubt it, or he would know that he is not digging a trench for a sewer lateral in your front yard in two hours, in most cases. That stuff is not easy to break through. Your friend can do your sewer lateral for about $50 to $100 in parts, which one is it? Fifty or one hundred? There is a 50% mark up in the same sentence. I love how people who live somewhere else always want to tell you the way that something that is done here isn’t done correctly and how they can do it better, faster and cheaper. I am not a plumber and I haven’t stayed at a Holiday Inn Express, but I have had two sewer laterals done and watched all the time and effort that it took to get the job done. If you and your buddy can dig the lateral by hand or even with a rented back hoe in two hours, please, by all means, have him come down here and do it for you. Then have him open up a plumbing business and teach all the incompetent plumbers a thing or two. While you are at it, can you show him a picture of the Old Seven Mile and see if he can give you an estimate on the repairs for that?. |
[Mold] This is the disgusting bar top at the Looe Key Tiki. Don’t they ever clean it with bleach? I rarely go there for that reason. I hate to put my bare arms on that filthy bar top. It’s a stupid bartop to begin with because it’s uneven and drinks have to be centered on each square tile. ~timemory@aol.com |
[Immune] I notice that the U.S.F.W.S. fire crews were setting up on Key Deer Boulevard yesterday. With a little bit of luck, maybe they won’t burn down half our island this time. What amazes me is that for the burn that got out of control, forced people to evacuate their homes, and destroyed more than five times the originally planned area, not a single person was the subject of any disciplinary action, in spite of the admission that many mistakes and poor decisions had been made |

[Evil Government taking liberty] I have been in action for more than a few years and I have never ever seen any sign of the “evil” government trying to take away my liberty or anything else. Mostly I haven’t seen much of anything with regard to any form of government, probably because I played by the rules and minded my own business. I think that a lot of people have concocted things in their minds that maybe only Freud could explain if he was still around. |
[Alcohol and Pain] Research studies have found that as many as 28% of people with chronic pain use alcohol as a pain management strategy. (The rest are just trying to have a good time: Keys Disease). Link |
[Build a Wall] The US Congress is looking for a solution for the huge illegal immigration problem with Mexico citing that if China could build a great wall to keep out the mongrels [Mongols] 2 thousand years ago, the United States could build a fence along Mexico’s border. A few of the Congressmen argued that it would be cost prohibitive and put the country in further debt. The representative from Texas stood up and said don’t worry, we can use illegal aliens to keep the cost down as they work much cheaper |
[Captain Doom and Gloom] DEF: Respect, n. Nothing is sacred! Famous drunks. Link |
[“Best western”] Wouldn’t that be Key Ambassador by the airport? |

Why does FTR include so many links in his posts. Does he think we’ll follow them to his tainted sources for his warped view of what America should be? |

Besides 1 race the Tea party is involved with they losing every single race around the country for the senate. The poster writing that the Dems should be worried seems to have a case of the Roves. NOOOOO were really winning.
Im amazed that Charlie Crist and medical fraud guru Rick Scott are with in a few points of each other with Crist leading many polls. Of course the right will proclaim that means Scott is “really” crushing Crist |
A POSTER WROTE: “Another good example why you should never take anything FTR writes seriously.
Yesterday he wrote, “11,472,000 Americans have left workforce since Obama took office. In July 2014, there were 92,001,000 Americans, 16 and over, who were classified as “not in the labor force,” meaning they not only did not have a job, but they didn’t actively seek one in the last four weeks.” Sounds bad. He has repeated this stat ad nauseam with no mention or recognition that there is an explosion of baby boomers retiring. Once again FTR wins the “lie of omission” award.” FTR’S RESPONSE: The poster was correct when he/she said it sounds bad. It sounds bad because it is bad. The poster was incorrect when he/she spoke of an “explosion” of retirements by Baby Boomers. The fact is that the ranks of those receiving Social Security has risen by only about 4% per year over the last 51/2 years. The retirement rate is not higher because prospective retirees are working longer because they can and because they cannot now afford to retire thanks to the wipe out of so much of their wherewithal during the Democrat recession. Please don’t forget that the “Baby Boomer” years were from 1946-1964. That means that there will be a substantial growth in the number of persons that will be retiring over the course of the next few years, but the growth to date has not been extraordinarily high. You may want to look at a graph that’s published by the Social Security Administration to be found by “Googling”: “graph number of social security beneficiaries” Or you might want to look at the official Social Security website to be found at: Link
You may also want to consider the following stats from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. At the end of December of 2006, the last month of Republican control of our governance, there were 145,926,000 Americans with jobs. Today, nearly eight years later, there are only 146,352,000 Americans with jobs. That’s an increase of only 426,000 American jobs in nearly eight years of Democrat governance. Do the math, in nearly 8 years of Democrat governance, they have created only about 53,250 American jobs per year. That, by any standard, is shameful. Americans deserve better governance that we had for the past 8 years. One more thing! Why do so many left fielders seem compelled to label those that they disagree with as being “liars?” Maybe it’s in their DNA. Personally I’m convinced that the critic is absolutely convinced that he/she is correct, he/she is not lying, he/she is simply uninformed. It’s a shame that he/she doesn’t seem to even try to be informed. ——————————— Part 2) Governor Scott has a very busy 2015 legislative agenda. Much of it will be of great interests to those of us who are interested in our environment. He is proposing new important environmental policies for the 2015 legislative session. Among his new proposals to keep Florida beautiful is a $1 billion investment in Florida’s waters, with $500 million in funding for alternative water supply and another $500 million for spring’s restoration. During his first term the Governor spent $100 million in the Keys to protect our reefs. Governor Crist never spent a cent in this regard by failing to fund the Stan Mayfield grant program for waste water treatment in the Keys. In his second term, Governor Scott will seek an additional $100 million for the Keys and for Apalachicola Bay. If you’re interested, please check out the following (hint: select the first choice in the box that appears): Link |
