Johnny Bruce is dead. John William Rice, known affectionately  as Johnny Bruce or Voll to many, passed away at home  Sunday, June 30, surrounded by loved ones Carin Beam and Susan Rich. Johnny Bruce was born Sept. 29, 1955. He left his birthplace of Michigan in the ’70s to launch the big adventure that was to be his life. He knew then that he was not  destined for the mainstream existence of his birthplace.  Johnny Bruce participated in the best there was to offer in Hawaii, Las Vegas, Houston, Colombia, Puerto Rico and Fort Lauderdale before settling in Key West 30 years ago where he made his living as a house painter. He recognized that time spent pursuing the experiences of life was just as honorable as hard work and good work ethic. He was very proud of hard work and chose to set an example in reliability and loyalty. Of late, he had made a point of traveling the world at every opportunity. Those who knew him are aware that he led a charmed, prosperous, bold and full life.  His favorite things were “sound check” at the Green Parrot or cruising U.S. Highway 1 on his Harley. Johnny Bruce is survived by his parents and siblings. Join us in celebrating his life from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 6, at his home, 1455 Long Beach Road, Big Pine Key.

[“You can rent downstairs enclosures again”] Thanks to FIRM pressuring the County Commission and Tallahassee. Things should go back to how they were. This will help stop any expensive affordable housing project the County comes up with. Downstairs enclosures are the solution to all our affordable housing problems and mean extra money for us retirees living on fixed incomes.

[No More Seafood] Scientists predict that if we continue fishing as we are now, we will see the end of most seafood by 2048. Oceans without fish. Imagine your meals without seafood. Imagine the global consequences. This is the future if we do not stop, think and act.

The End of the Line chronicles how demand for cod off the coast of Newfoundland in the early 1990s led to the decimation of the most abundant cod population in the world, how hi-tech fishing vessels leave no escape routes for fish populations and how farmed fish as a solution is a myth.

The film lays the responsibility squarely on consumers who innocently buy endangered fish, politicians who ignore the advice and pleas of scientists, fishermen who break quotas and fish illegally, and the global fishing industry that is slow to react to an impending disaster. Video

an_ball-chain[No More Seafood] Capt. jailed for illegal catch A judge sentenced a fisherman to 45 days in jail on  Monday for illegally catching more than 500 pounds of yellowtail snapper in a protected spawning reserve in the Dry Tortugas. Capt. Evelio Egusquiza Fornes of Miami pleaded no contest to fishing and possessing fish in a restricted area, In addition to the jail term, Judge Wayne Miller sentenced Fornes to six months’ probation and ordered him to forfeit $2,588 generated from the sale of the roughly 664 illegally caught yellowtail.

Fornes’ mate, Jorge Gallart, pleaded guilty in April and  served 52 days in jail, court records state

The fishermen were caught in February in the Tortugas Ecological Reserve with the yellowtail snapper on their boat, the Candalaria

FWC law enforcement officers were tipped off by the boat’s satellite tracking device, which the federal government requires for commercial fishermen of reef species off the Florida Keys. The men kept turning off the tracking device trying to elude law enforcement. Anchoring and fishing in the Tortugas Ecological Reserve is strictly prohibited ~KW Citizen (condensed)

[Picnic Island Ferry]  I hope that the Looe Key Resort does start a ferry service to Picnic Island. My friends and I think it’s a great idea as we don’t own a boat. And if we happen to drink a little too much we will have a designated Captain to return us safely back to the dock. The island is not just for the drunken boat owners, there is plenty of sand out there to be shared by all.

[Political Science] If you knew anything about science you would know that it’s not the kind of thing you can be “for” or “against”. Science is evidence based with strict rules about the evidence, which consists of actual measurements and facts. It’s not like the so-called evidence in our legal system that is spun one way or the other.

You can’t be for or against gravity, chemical interactions, electrons, dementia, price elasticity, IQ, carbon dating, body language, and thousands of other things in both the hard and soft sciences (hard science uses a laboratory while soft science does not). This distinction doesn’t mean much in the 21st century.

[Picnic Island Ferry] Do the patrons realize that they’ll have about a half hour’s boat ride through the canal at no wake speed and then another half hour ride through the canal to get back from Picnic Is?

Walking-into-HELL[Dead Fireman] The photo attached to the article about the Arizona Firefighters should be captioned “Walking Into HELL” Thank you for publishing this.  As a retired firefighter it is close to my heart.

If you have seen the news in the last few days you have seen reports of the horrible loss of life of 19 firefighters, fighting  the Yarnill Hill fire in Arizona.  The men who were lost were members of the elite Granite Mountain Hotshots team of highly trained men who put their lives on the line to protect lives and properties from wildfires.  They were over taken by fire when the winds suddenly shifted.  Despite their protective equipment they were trapped by the fast growing inferno and perished.  The entire firefighter community of our great nation mourns the loss of our brother firefighters.  Our Hearts and our prayers go out to the families who have lost their loved ones.

A fund has been set up by the United Phoenix Firefighters Association to assist the families. 100% of all donations will go the families of these fallen men. Contributions can be made at any Chase Bank or by check to: United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association, 61 E. Columbus Ave. Phoenix,  AZ  85012. Please make check to UPFFA and include: YARNELL FIREFIGHTER FUND in the memo area of your check

[Freedom’s Price] Tomorrow we celebrate freedom thanks to those who came before. Those brave men who fought and died in each and every war. Freedom always comes at a price, and while we celebrate we should tip our hats to the heroes who made our country great.

[Battle of Gettysburg] I don’t know why it was such an important battle because the war continued for almost another two years. What it did accomplish was to keep the Confederate Army south of the Mason Dixon line. They never made it to Union territory.

[Sewer Grinder Pumps] The bottom line is that the Keys are just too flat to allow for a real gravity fed infrastructure for the amount of homes you are trying to service, I heard its about 9,000. There is no way you can ever pitch the pipe system to accommodate that many homes without ending up in the ocean. The reality is hitting people in the face and nobody really wants it. The bottom line is they are having the home owner spend useless money on high maintenance pumps that will fail frequently. The alternative should be to collect the sewage at multiple points via gravity, or vacuum, and have small processing stations every few hundred homes and then pump it forward until it gets to the appropriate site for treatment. Grinding and pumping it from every single home to the main lines through small diameter pipes is a formula for disaster. But not doing nothing is even worse.

Septic tanks will eventually have to be phased out at the rate they have allowed the Keys to grow, it will eventually contaminate the waters around the Keys. They have to do something and they know it. In Miami I have worked tying in subdivisions’ old laterals to old crockery pipes and using resin liners in those pipes to be able to continue using the existing infrastructure that is leaking almost everywhere, this is the solution Dade County thinks will be the answer, well, it’s not. The system sucks and the leaks are just playing musical chairs, and popping up elsewhere, and the contamination of the ground water is just getting worse. Link

It looks good on paper, right? Well, take it from someone that has dived in the shit to install these, it’s a rip off. And the Keys will find themselves facing these issues in the future with these pumps they are trying to shove down your throats. There are many small subdivisions in the middle of nowhere that have their own mini processing plants that serve a few hundred homes, and they are working just fine with minimal downtime and maintenance.

[Perimenopause] The only thing which relieves Perimenopause is weed. The older lady friends are heavy drinkers and that seems to help them. But weedheads usually do not drink as much, which I believe is a good thing. Still using massive amounts of vitamins and a clean, boring diet with a little exercise and went back to smoking pot and it helps with sleep and my crotchety mood. Any ladies wish to share their tricks on feeling better? This is just awful and I wonder if the fellas experience a midlife crash.

an_psychiatrist[Post Psychology] The posts on the C.T. as well as the posts on virtually every other site in the land, perhaps hold little serious concerns for the majority of readers. I don’t know Carls place from a bale of hay, however I would give odds that the establishment is some kind of a landmark for those in Detroit and perhaps a surprising amount of people throughout the midwest. I found the remark interesting in this way: as so many of these old landmarks disappear throughout our country it is possibly a meaningful sign that our present economy is steadily declining? No one generally would abandon an old profitable enterprise, whose product I assume is still of a first rate quality without some dire outside forces pressuring it. I realize that Detroit is in very bad straits, but was hopeful that maybe it could somehow now be leveling off a bit from it’s plummet to oblivion. Tales such as this say “nay”, and that is why tales like this are interesting to me. So I believe one should take a little longer look behind some seemingly innocuous posts and look for the reason one made the post.

[Picnic Island Ferry] There has been some talk about a privately ran ferry to Picnic Island.  I believe that is a great idea, however I think that it should be developed and sponsored by the great Monroe County.  You may ask why, I would think that it may be no different than the current ferry and planned bridge going to Pigeon Key.  Perhaps the owner of Picnic Island can create a nonprofit organization to charge people to go there just like at Pigeon Key.

A major Democrat snafu,eh? (Ed: I don’t know what that means, but I’ll post it in case someone else does.)

[Captain Doom and Gloom] There are several kinds of people in the Keys, in fact in the country.

Those who would have peace and tranquility living ecologically efficient, keeping the Keys as is or returning them to an earlier time of calm and beauty.

Those who would leave the officials do as they please, run the utilities and maintain our islands to suit their whims.

Those who see financial profit in everything regardless of changes made and the destruction brought by development.

Those who would make these islands a comic game string of ugly, gaudy circus islands, with mechanical contraptions for coins and tokens.

Those who see an instant flip of investment to gain a minute percentage gambling on others wanting more and more.

Those who would turn the Keys into another yacht basin for the rich and infamous with tolls, gates, guards and servants.

This is happening not only in the Keys but nation wide. We, the People, have sold out to the useless eaters, the juntas, the invaders and the barons.

RIP Florida Keys. It was nice while it lasted. RIP America, you will be forgotten in three days.

I did a rough estimate on how much it is going to cost my house to use the FKAA water system. For two people is should average $148.00 per month for the rest of our lives, just to have water and sewage. Add electric, gas, taxes, maintenance, etc. It was nice while we lasted!

[The Great Green Con No.1] The hard proof that finally shows global warming forecasts that are costing you billions were wrong all along.  What is most important about this article is that the Flat-Earther Neo-Nazis, excuse me, lefty environmentalists, tried to have this article banned. Here are my choices for FTR guy’s logo.

FTR goes off on me because I simply pointed out the Medicaid cost of the Texas abortion bill. I never said anything against the bill, just pointed out its cost. FTR assumes (ass-you-and-me) I was against it and screams I am a lefty. Thinks his facts are facts and mine are bogus. Enjoyed your anger at me for no reason. Sign me a Republican. Headline: Obama finally goes back to Africa; Republicans still not happy.

[Crooks] It appears NOAA wasn’t just content in 2010 with covering up problems with their satellites such as kaput sensors, sensors relaying faulty data and new satellites being sent into space with missing sensors. We now have what appear to be more cover-ups courtesy of NOAA, and who knows who else might be involved? Perhaps BP? Perhaps Obama? I can’t say but it would not surprise me if either of them were in on this.

from the right

We all remember Mr. Obama’s comforting reassurances that Obamacare would drive down the price of health insurance.

arrow up red anDeer Friends, it just ain’t so. The WSJ on June 3 of this year reported that in California the ObamaCare plan for a typical 25-year-old man is roughly 64% to 117% more expensive than the five cheapest policies sold today. For a 40 year old, it’s 73% to 146%. On June 1 the Washington Examiner reported that folks in Rhode Island are going to see really big increases in their health care insurance costs. In RI an individual under 25 years old can currently purchase plans ranging from $96 to $196 per month. However, the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island “base” rate for a 21-year-old once the health care law kicks in will be $314, according to the insurance commissioner, or more than triple what some younger Rhode Islanders could pay under the pre-Obamacare status. On June 10th Forbes published and article with a headline that read; “Ohio Dept. Of Insurance: Obamacare To Increase Individual-Market Health Premiums By 88 Percent.” Florida is projected to suffer a 61% increase in health care premiums under Obamacare. That’s from a report by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Majority Staff, Senate Committee on Finance Minority Staff, and Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Minority Staff, March 2013. You can check out a chart at the projected increases at Link

It’s going to be a massive, crunching, fiscal cluster intercourse. People, probably you, will refuse to buy the insurance. But the law requires that you either buy the insurance or pay a fine. The nasty little fact is that the fine is only a tiny portion of the cost of the insurance, you can be stock sure that most will pay the inexpensive fine rather than spend many times the cost of the insurance. Remember, it makes no difference in the health care that you will receive whether or not you buy insurance or pay the fine.

Hopefully you will ask yourself “who in the hell is going to pay for the uninsured peoples health care?” The answer is simple; you and I and every other American taxpayer through higher taxes.

Certainly you will remember Mr. Obama’s soothing promises that with his health care plan you will be able to choose your doctors. We’ve had conversations with several of our doctors about the impact on Medicare. Most tell us that they will not be accepting any new Medicare patients.  For your own sake, I urge to immediately establish a relationship with a physician that you trust prior to the implementation of Obamacare.

zimmerman-trayvon3Part 2) The prosecution seems to be winding down in the Zimmerman trial. When they rest their case, look for the defense to file a motion urging the Judge to issue a “Directed Verdict of Acquittal”.  It happens in nearly every criminal trial. It simply means that the defense is claiming that there is not enough evidence to convict. Judges only occasionally grant this motion, but I’ve seen it happen. If the Judge believes that there is insufficient evidence to convict the defendant of the top charge or any lesser offenses, the Judge has the power to simply declare the trial over, the defendant is declared not guilty, and the case never goes to the jury. It’s a possibility, but a slim one, in this  case.  You might also want to think about the fact that every single Florida State Attorney or Assistant State Attorney has an ethical obligation NOT to file criminal charges unless they believe that there is a reasonable likelihood of conviction.

Respectfully submitted: FTR@bellsouth.net
