[Crooks] Phone address book. My spouse collapsed and no one could contact me because no one knew my first name when they looked through her address book. If she had listed me as ‘Husband’ they would have been able to tell me of her fall. So I don’t know if mis-naming intimate contacts to prevent identity theft is more important than being notified in an emergency. |
[Big Pine Restaurant Review] I agree with the poster who complained about BPK restaurants. My take: There are approximately twelve food establishments on BPK: Bagel Island, Bucktooth Rooster, China Garden, Coco’s Kitchen, Cuban Coffee, Florida Keys Cafe, Good Food Conspiracy, Milagro, No Name Pub, Pizzaworks, Popa Jim’s Pizza, and The Deli. The most expensive place, but with the best ambiance, is Milagro (tacos $20, Chicken Breast Dinner $25, Iceberg Wedge Salad $11), with Bucktooth Rooster running a close second in regard to price (apps start at $9, Monster homemade Rueban sandwich plate $15, fried pickles $10, basic salad $9, Tacos $15, seafood $19 – $29).
Restaurants I do not dine at are No Name Pub (a filthy tourist trap with processed food served on Styrofoam plates), China Garden (just bad all around), and the Florida Keys Café (way overpriced crappy food). Popa Jim’s beats out Pizzaworks (processed food). Coco’s Kitchen is good, but prices have gone up and service is always slow. Bagel Island is also slow but makes a great bagel and everything is fresh. Paradise BSB is just a bar with a kitchen that puts out below-average food (grilled cheese $10, hot dog $7, mostly processed/fried food). Piners who want a good meal can travel to Marathon (gas is also cheaper there) or hit the road to the Square Grouper. The Grouper is pricey, but when you compare it to the BPK restaurants, it’s worth it. You really get a good meal at this trendy place and spend about the same as dining at Milagro. ~drphil@hotmail.com |

[July 4th Fireworks] We are gearing up for our annual 4th of July Celebration! The Summer is fast approaching and the 24th Annual Independence Day Fireworks display is just around the corner. Independence Day is a day to remember and celebrate that we live in a free nation among family and friends. We need your support to help continue this patriotic tradition.
This year’s event will be held Wednesday July 3rd at the Big Pine Community Park. It is fully funded and organized every year by the Big Pine & Lower Keys Rotary, the Big Pine Volunteer Fire Department, local businesses, organizations and citizens. We need your help and the help of anyone you may know. The annual event costs are over $20,000 and we need full community support to carry on this wonderful tradition. We appreciate ALL donations; there is no donation too big or too small. We are looking for Sponsors and Vendors that want to be a part of the event on July 3rd to sell food, snacks, goods, showcase your business, offer children’s activities, etc. If you can in anyway sponsor/support this event, please call Heidi at 303.501.0233 and arrangements will be made for pick up or mail in the attached sponsor form or vendor form. |
[A Way With Words] These insults are from an era before the language got boiled down to just repeating the same 4-letter words. A member of Parliament to Disraeli: “Sir, you will either die on the gallows or of some unspeakable disease.” “That depends, Sir, ” said Disraeli, “whether I embrace your policies or your mistress.””He had delusions of adequacy.” ~Walter Kerr”He has all the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire.” ~Winston Churchill “I have never killed a man, but I have read many obituaries with great pleasure.” ~Clarence Darrow |
[Motor Wanted] Looking for a used, running 4 hp outboard short-shaft motor cheap, like $100. Call 305-833-4626 |
[“Yard sale”] They did it again. I had a yard sale of tools and books. Sold nothing but a box of rusty nails for $2. People are amazing. They want everything for nothing even if the item is new and has a $29.95 original price tag on it! From now on it all goes to friends or into the city dump. Why do I waste my time? |
[Obsolete] A 20 year old took an old Ford to the local dealer wanting to know why his iPhone charging port was scratching his phone screen and not charging it? |
[Lottery Spread It Around] Would it not be better if lotteries were maxed out to one million dollars so more people could win? Who gets the 1.5 billion dollars; and how in the world could they spend it without the Mob asking for their share? Most winners wished they never won after what happens to them after winning. |
[Chemtrails] Has anyone else noticed the clear blue skies since chemtrail spraying ceased? The only clouds have been real ones, and the jets leave only short condensation trails. We have not seen but a couple days in a row of clear skies since about 1997. How much longer will the chem trails be halted? Maybe the massive expense has been diverted to build Trump’s wall? |
[Flu] The rate of heart attacks increased almost ten times 1-3 days after a flu infection. |
[Safety Gas Cans] A few years ago they created the safety nozzle for gas cans. Have you ever tried to fill a tank using one of these? It’s dangerous because the thing you have to push against the car’s gas hole keeps slipping and splashing gas. I just take the spout off the can when I need gas and pour it directly from the can. |
[“Global warming”] To all who believe, or don’t believe in global warming. If you just do the least investigation (like go outside and look at the coral under your feet) the world has constantly changed temperature. The Keys were under 75 feet of ocean long ago. From glaciers covering the world to grass and mammoths in Alaska. The reality is that humans have no influence over the weather then, or now. I will say that it’s quite the money maker. I just need to come up with the right angle. I guess in the world we live in somebody has to take the blame for everything. If it’s caused by humans then no problem. We will follow the dinosaurs. Enjoy what you have. |
[Crash Dummy Explains Gun Control] Without a doubt, one of the best presentations I have ever seen regarding the 2nd Amendment and how the 3rd Amendment explains the 2nd. Video |
[Lottery Winner] I saw where a lady won the lottery and said she would still go to work. Ha. She’ll last about a half hour there now that she’s stinking rich, or until someone tells her to get coffee or sweep the floor. Then let’s see how long she works. |

[Amazon Cloud] Migrate your storage for Windows-based workloads to AWS, Amazon’s massive server farm. You can move your storage to AWS and gain the following key benefits: leverage the scale and performance of the cloud, and operate more securely, no need to change your applications, featuring a fully managed native Windows file system, so you can move easily to the cloud, pay only for what you use, with no hardware or software licenses to worry about and using fully managed storage. |
[Style] What the hell happened? |
[Bumping People] Now self-driving cars are racial. They can’t tell dark colored skin from the back grounds. I can see the lawyers jumping on this band wagon right now. Let’s bring back the old 1955 Buick bumpers, folks! |
Happy International Woman’s Day! |
[Soaring Food Costs] Considering what used to be a basic retail price for food and necessities, the Buy One get One Free offer makes me sick when the total price for one is 4 to 5 times what it was a few years ago.
[“Food costs going up”] Prices and values of things don’t go up – the dollar loses value and it costs more dollars to buy the same stuff. Case in point, home prices. Look at what homes sold for in the Keys back in the 1980s vs the value of the dollar/gold/silver. Now look at the numbers today — the dollar has lost value! |
[Bears] Looks like another dead fish, until you realize those are grizzly bears standing on a dead whale. |
[Clean Energy] Take away all the government incentives for solar and wind. Then tell me how cost effective it is. |
Speak only if it improves upon the silence. ~Ghandi |
