permit30
[Sewer Permit Office] It’s really galling that the County Commission cannot see to install a sewer permitting office in the Lower Keys when the cost was estimated at $84k. It should go in Commissioner Neugent’s office on Ships Way in BPK since he is rarely there anyway. What better way to avoid the thousands of trips to Marathon or Key West by people needing the multiple permits required of the new system.

ant30
Has anyone else noticed the recent influx of winged ants? They are not termites swarming. I’ve seen them in great numbers from Marathon thru the Lower Keys on boats, cars, store fronts and homes-they are everywhere!
What’s up with that?
[“Proposed bus shelter removal”] I just read in the Keynoter that the City of Marathon is considering removal of the bus shelters at Kmart on Sombrero Beach Rd. and moving the stops to north and south bound locations on US1 with just signage for the bus stop–no shelter or bench. The removal is because a handful of homeless people are abusing the shelter by loitering, sleeping on the benches, causing fights, etc.  The Sheriff’s Office Marathon Substation Commander, reported to the City Council that it is too much trouble to patrol that one little spot to keep that shelter available for bus riders and eliminate the abuse of the space.  Say what? That’s probably the easiest thing they’ve got to do all day.Arrest a few people for being drunk in public, fighting, etc, and they will stop.  Maybe its too much trouble for them to keep an eye on anything in Marathon that has any kind of regular need for observation, i.e. patrols.  What the hell do they have those cars for then? to sit in the shade somewhere and hide like they do at the back end of the Marathon Airport parking lot?  Next time I see a patrol car there, like I did last Friday afternoon, I’m walking up to them and get their frigging badge number and I’m calling Sheriff Ramsay, who I do happen to know personally.

To suggest that the bus shelter be removed because of the actions of a few is absurd.  To suggest that the Sheriff’s Office cannot be bothered to control this area is also absurd.  It took coordinated efforts of several months work on the part of another local government entity with the parties involved, to get that shelter put in place for the riders.  They are not cheap.  The members of our community who ride that bus every day to work, college classes, and doctor appointments in Key West were screaming for a shelter.  Now they want to yank it out and throw everyone into the sun and rain with no way to sit down for the long wait for the bus.

Bus riders are not “marginal people”, not worthy of your concern or respect as you incorrectly believe.  They are people who work in Key West, people going to school, young mothers with kids and babies, and the elderly going to doctor appointments, etc.  I am one major car repair away from riding that bus every day to work in Marathon myself from Big Pine. I’ve got a great job, just don’t have a pile of money available for a big car repair, nor can I afford to get a new car right now.  Marathon City Council, you can do better than this for your community, all the members of your community, stretch your mind open a bit for this. Do not ignore the people who don’t have cars, or who cannot drive anymore, or do not want to drive their car every day such distances to work, or might be a one-car family, and hubby takes the car to his job.  The people who ride this bus 4-6 hours a day from Homestead to a job here in the Marathon area are serving you in our stores, restaurants, etc.  They are working people who can’t afford to live down here, but are supporting their families and working for a living.  They also deserve a sheltered place and a bench to sit on after a long day’s work while they wait for the bus for the long ride home.  Are you turning your backs on the elderly living on fixed incomes of your community that ride the bus? Do you want to make them stand in the hot Sun and rain to wait for the bus?  Mothers with babies, and young children in tow, waiting on the edge of the highway?  What you are proposing is a very draconian, and may I add small-minded, remedy to a small problem, and I really hope you rethink this and find a better way.  I will be doing everything I can with the people I know in local government to stop you from removing that shelter, behind the scenes as always.  I was personally involved in the work that went into getting that shelter put in a few years ago, so I can’t come before the Council to address you, or I certainly would.  This is very bad idea, and I don’t like to see progress and civilization pushed backward bit by bit for all because of a small group of abusers.  This is the trend of the day to push civilization backwards, and its not good at all.  This is the worst element of socialism, that everyone should suffer in an equal fashion, in this case because it’s too much trouble to preserve the community convenience of a bus shelter for the abuses of a few.  Shame on you.

[“Recommend a good plumber; the guy I called twice is not returning my calls”] I know a great, honest, reliable plumber, but since you chose not to reveal to everyone whom it was that wouldn’t return your two phone calls, then I choose to not tell you the name of my plumber.

I can do a wedding in Marathon. I live in Big Pine. How can we get in touch?

Did you ever look at yourself in the mirror and think, what wattage is my microwave?
[Bar Talk] I love following the never ending trials and tribulations of the Tiki Bar,  the longest running soap opera in the Lower Keys.  Always good for a laugh when things get slow.  Is any delusional local faction currently boycotting the place for one reason or another?  Not to worry, eventually they always fold and come crawling back to their usual perches.

Thank God for the do-gooders.  They are the ones who have kept the human race going for as long as it has.  Unfortunately it is painfully obvious that they are being overwhelmed by the do-badders.

[“Sandwich wars”] Hoagies, hero’s, subs? Who cares, let’s refer to them as elongated sandwiches.
[“Plumber not returning calls”] I call those kinds of business, I’ll-get-to-you-if-I-have-time businesses. I demand professionalism in their work and their phone response. They cry when there’s no business, but when they get a lot of work it’s I’ll-get-to-you-if-I-have-time-so-screw-you-I-don’t need-you. All they offer is lame excuses for their lack of professionalism. Well, I’m the one paying so screw them.

[Shingles] I know that L-Lysine was very beneficial in clearing up my husband’s case of shingles!  Taken daily, it would prevent ever getting shingles.I Googled L-lysine and found that the University of Maryland Medical Center web site states “L-lysine can be used to treat mouth and genital lesions caused by herpes simplex virus as well as shingles caused by herpes zoster viruses.” Link

Put up a bat house to encourage the presence of these shy animals. Bats consume 3,000 or more mosquitoes and other insects nightly, and bats are less likely to be rabid than dogs are. Bats are responsible for up to 95 percent of the seed dispersal essential to the regeneration of forests.
[“Cellphone privacy”] “NCIS magic computer’ is totally inaccurate. Cannot be done on NCIC. Secondly, police were never able to go through a cell phone with a search warrant or a Communication Data Warrant.

bogart30[Humphrey Bogart] Bacall had asked Spencer Tracy to give Bogart’s eulogy, but Tracy was too upset, so John Huston spoke instead and reminded the gathered mourners that while Bogart’s life had ended far too soon, it had been a rich one. “Himself, he never took too seriously—his work most seriously. He regarded the somewhat gaudy figure of Bogart, the star, with an amused cynicism; Bogart, the actor, he held in deep respect…In each of the fountains at Versailles there is a pike which keeps all the carp active; otherwise they would grow overfat and die. Bogie took rare delight in performing a similar duty in the fountains of Hollywood. Yet his victims seldom bore him any malice, and when they did, not for long. His shafts were fashioned only to stick into the outer layer of complacency, and not to penetrate through to the regions of the spirit where real injuries are done…He is quite irreplaceable. There will never be another like him..(PS Said of Bacall: “Bogie fell in love with the character she played, so she had to keep playing it the rest of her life.”)
Whew! I am relieved that Deer Ed is OK. No CT on Friday and no cloud of Tourette’s (look it up) wafting over from Big Pine Key due to computer problems – I was afraid that Deer Ed was ill or something. (Ed: Thanks for your concern, but the problem was I haven’t figured out how to work a computer yet.)

[“Marathon wedding official”] We got married in Marathon many years ago at some realtor’s office. We just drove up from Key West and asked if anyone could marry us. I gave the lady twenty bucks.

[“Sandwich wars”] I’d like to add another couple of names to the arsenal: Grinder and Torpedo. They are both submarine sandwiches popular in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and Connecticut.
[Jersey Day Dreamin’] Heaven help us all. If the poster who has been turned down by every Jersey woman that he hit on or fantasized about, just think about what his postings will look like when his right hand falls asleep on him. A stud like him, perhaps he should try with someone that he has a chance with. I suggest some of the homeless women around here. If they have enough to drink they just might take him on.
(p.s. Nice picture of his dream team, or are they his sisters?)

[“What happens to the big fish caught”
] Release it, use for bait, or make fillets at the dock if legal/edible. It’s the same routine applied as to the smaller fish, except there is more fillets with the bigger ones. We took home every legal/edible fish we could as we are locals, have a freezer and some cats to feed. Tourists may take only enough to have one “we cook your catch” meal and release the rest. As far as I know it’s illegal to sell your catch to restaurants if not licensed, however restaurants can cook your catch for your own consumption. Fish are not dead but merely unconscious when first caught. Remove the hook, measure it, and take a picture. Then it’s dragged alongside the boat by it’s gills until it regains consciousness and released.
[“Jersey girl bashing”] The guy always spewing drool about New Jersey woman can’t ever have been to Atlantic City. You’ll see more hot woman in one night in AC than you will in a lifetime on Big Pine. I think he is just into the photos Ed puts up for his lame posts. I don’t find he even remotely amusing or funny. I imagine he is just another pathetic Big Pine loser, no shortage them. Sad but true.

[SEAL] A friend told me the other day that by November he wanted to look like a Navy SEAL and  asked me if I could help him.  I said, “ Sure.  As soon as you can balance a beach ball on your nose I’ll toss you a couple of raw fish!”

[“Like Willy Nelson says, ‘Know when to hold ‘em, know when to fold ‘em.’”] Actually that was Kenny Rogers’ song “The Gambler“. Another nit in the post: it should be “as”, not “like”.

[“Sandwich wars”] In N.Y. they call them Heros. Why state something nasty about people you obviously know nothing about? In NY some do call Hogies Heros, but not real Italians. They know the truth. Besides that, I lived in NYC and PHL most of my life and was raised on hogies and real food you will never know about.

nurse needle squirt[“Shingles”] As an RN I took care of patients with the Shingles. This is a serious condition, not only is it very painful there is a possibility of blindness (if blisters are on the face or near the eyes) the post neuralgia (no treatment works for this) can go on for years. As soon as the vaccine was available I got the shot. If a person has any doubts just ask some one who has had the Shingles. Personally I’m pretty sure the only thing a B12 shot will do is give you a large ugly bruise and at $25, or so, a shot not worth the trouble. This is America and you can make your choice as you please. (Keep up the good work Ed ~a faithful reader).

[Removing Marathon’s bus shelter] As I understand it the Sheriff’s say it’s too much trouble for them to get out of their cars to police the bus stop for homeless troublemakers. Oh, you poor babies, do you have to get out of your air conditioned car? Is that your problem? That particular bus stop is one of the most important in the Key as it is the transfer point for workers coming from Homestead to Key West. Without these workers who will clean your toilets? Why do the rich always dump on the defenseless poor?

Let me try to understand this: the Tea Party trusts the federal government to sue itself, but noting else?
Fox News is burning the midnight oil spinning up new ways to discredit the Benghazi US embassy burning guy we just captured in Libya and brought back here for trial.   Could it be that Fox is doing this because he has told people that he and his pals  burned it because of the video made by that kook “pastor” of ours,  the same reason other stuff of ours was attacked by offended Muslims over in the Middle East around that time?  That would make Susan Rice right on the money and Fox News way wrong once again,  and Fox has been investing too much TV air time in making her and Hillary look like  idiots to let that happen.
When Senator McCain comes on the tube I cringe while waiting to find out who he wants to bomb this week.
from the right
A POSTER WROTE: “the link to “From the Reich” seems to be down, well at least on my iPhone and iPad. So I you could pass this on to FTR guy .” The poster also submitted a cobbled together banner “From the Reich.”from-the-reichFTR’S RESPONSE: “The “From the Reich” banner submitted by the poster is fascinating to me. It might have been a sophomoric attempt at humor, but I doubt it. I marvel at the left’s addiction to distorting reality. But perhaps the only way they can validate their beliefs is by distorting reality.

Let’s think about a disturbing trend in law enforcement under the Obama administration. We have only recently become aware of their obsession for spying on Americans, they excuse their intrusion into our private lives as being in the name of security. Meta data is buzz words that simply means the governments gathering up everything that there is to know about you. We now are watching the melt down of the IRS because of it being used as a political weapon for the Obama administration. We have seen Team Obama illegally spying on and persecuting members of the media who are critical of Team Obama. We now know that Team Obama has engaged in the illegal delivery of guns to narco terrorists in operation Fast and Furious. We know that Team Obama has no respect for our Vets. We know that Team Obama has required the purchase of mega amounts of ammo and paramilitary equipment for federal agencies that have little or no law enforcement responsibilities, i.e. the Department of Agriculture is purchasing genuine assault rifles and hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammo. We know that the major media are Obama’s functional equivalent of Goebbels Third Reich propaganda colossus.

Obama most certainly is the most power hungry president that this nation has ever endured. Obama has steered our nation into an age of oligarchy. A new class of super-wealthy oligarchs keeps getting more powerful while the country’s middle class shrinks. History will judge him very harshly.

We are now enjoying the fact that violent crime has hit a 50-year low. But many of the nation’s police departments are gearing up as if the country were expecting invasion, or as if they were an occupying force in a conquered nation.

The ACLU reported recently that SWAT teams in the United States conduct around 45,000 raids each year, only 7 percent of which have anything whatsoever to do with the hostage situations with which SWAT teams were assembled to contend. Paramilitary operations, the ACLU concluded, are “happening in about 124 homes every day — or more likely every night” — and four in five of those are performed in order that authorities might “search homes, usually for drugs.” Such raids routinely involve “armored personnel carriers,” “military equipment like battering rams,” and “flashbang grenades.”

Deer Friends, much if not most, of the military equipment comes from the federal government. Please remember that I’m a retired cop, very conservative, and I am a serious law and order supporter, but the militarizing of our law enforcement has me deeply concerned.

Our current government and its obsession with domestic spying and hyper control is very much reminiscent of the Third Reich.

Part 2) Mr. Obama has been an instructor at the law school level for constitutional matters. We also know that he holds the constitution in some disdain. We know that because he has told us that in his view the constitution is nothing but a list of “negative liberties”. It should be no surprise to learn that Team Obama’s edicts have been overturned by the Supreme Court, unanimously, 13 times since January 2012.   Obama has taken such extreme position on key issues that the Court has uncharacteristically slapped them down time and time again. Historically, the Justice Department has won about 70 percent of its cases before the high court. But in each of the last three terms, the Court has ruled against the administration a majority of the time.
