The Big Pine Restaurant is closed after thirty years or so. Does anyone know why? The husband cooked and the wife worked the floor–a successful combination. They were the only restaurant around here that I could recommend. |
[“Commissioner Neugent to meet constituents”] You’re angry because it’s during work hours? Who do you think your fooling? If it was on Saturday and in your own backyard, you still, probably, wouldn’t go! |
[“RadioShack”] From what I have read it is possible that 900 of the nearly 5000 RadioShack stores may become Sprint stores. None of this has been finalized but it is one possibility among others. The RadioShack in Big Pine is a local family owned store and would not be part of the corporate decision. Our local RadioShack intends to stay and continue to improve with more new products and services. In addition to AT&T and Sprint we sell many no-contract cell phones from different providers. We also repair iPhone and iPads in the store as well as computer repairs. We are open every day from 9AM to 7PM. Please stop by the next time you are in the Winn Dixie Shopping Center. |
[Overboard] I have never seen any cars under water, but two interesting things I have come across were a phone booth off the No Name Bridge and a riding lawnmower in the back country. I caught 8 nice-sized lobsters from under the lawnmower. |
[“Speculation that autism is caused by something in the vaccines“] Are 1 in 68 kids today really autistic? Maybe so, maybe not. I can’t speak for the general population, but what happened in schools is that previously kids considered “autistic” had to exhibit major behavioral and adjustment problems in order to be eligible for special education services. During the last decade, however, the classification has been changed to “Autistic Spectrum Disorder” (ASD) and kids with relatively minor symptomatology who would never has been previously considered as disabled, now qualify under the new classification. |
[Tile] There is a new trend on stiletto Mexican tile and that is to paint the tile and grout black. It really looks terrific. |

[The Big Thirst] I just realized I have become an alcoholic, a true juice head. It hit me like a freight train last week after 65 years of drinking at parties and bars once or twice a week. Now every night I have to have a drink. The feeling is overpowering and drives me to drink (sorry , but it is the truth). Like a candy craze or a have to have that cigarette, or maybe like a druggie needing a fix. It scares me because I do not think I can shake this bug. No, AA will not help either. It is all about the body wanting that chemical and once trapped into it, there is no way out except abstinence and the Keys are as anti-abstinence as you can get! |
[Arab Conspiracy] Lawyers for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks say they have new evidence that agents of Saudi Arabia “directly and knowingly” helped the hijackers, including sworn testimony from the so-called 20th hijacker and from three principals of the U.S. government’s two primary probes of the attacks. The Embassy of Saudi Arabia in Washington said in a statement Wednesday that Zacarias Moussaoui’s claims come from a “deranged criminal” and that there is no evidence to support them. It said Saudi Arabia had nothing to do with the deadly 2001 attacks.Home come the Royal family was secretly whisked out of D.C. on 9/11 while all other flights were grounded? |
I like the service that I get from the Radio Shack. I think the people are friendly, intelligent, know how to fix my iPhone and have suggestions on how to get something done when I give them the parameters and I will patronize them no matter that the sign says above their front door, be it ‘RadioShack’ ‘AT&T store’ ‘we fix things you can’t figure out’. |

[How I set up my Desktop Computer System Hard Drives] The master 500 GB HDD has nothing on it but the operating system and programs in use.Slave 1 TB HDD 1 has all data and picture files and a folder for unused programs. Slave 2 TB HDD has a master system back up, and slave 1 back up.Except for creating new DVD back ups, the above is completely automated by the operating system. All programs and important files are also backed up to rewritable DVD disks which are left open to add to and delete from. I create a bootable DVD of the master HDD every few months and keep all versions. To loose your data and imagery is to loose years of work. |
Happy Thursday from Springer’s Bar and Grill. We have an amazing special for you today, Chicken Parmigiana on a hoagie roll. Chicken smothered in pasta sauce with mozzarella cheese. Just like mama used to make. It’s sure to bring out the Italian in all of us. Friday special: beer batter fish and chips or ramrod mahi mahi. Happy Hour 2-6 daily with great drink specials and happy hour menu. There’s always something special at Springer’s. |
[Homeless] Another long evening at the Key West City Commission, where residents, commissioners and others continue to spew half-truths, innuendo and flat out lies. Commissioners Yanniz, Wardlow and Rossi would have voted for anything before they betrayed their Golf Club patrons. They and many of the commenters (yes, you, Ms. Romano) continue to repeat already answered questions like “we haven’t explored other sites” for the shelter, “what about here? what about there?” and “it will cost too much”, because if they yielded to logic, they would have no arguments left. They do not want to accept that supporting homeless citizens (yes, they are citizens, just like the rest of us) is much cheaper, way more compassionate and actually solves the problem. Being harsh and judgmental on the homeless insures that we will have a homeless population forever. This is a problem that experts agree cannot be legislated or criminalized away. There is documented proof! But Yanniz, Wardlow and Rossi are not, and the Golf Club is not, interested in solving the problem, just in making others deal with it, making us afraid of it, and trying to assign blame for it. They ignore the experts because they don’t give them the answer that they want. And they have a bizarre fear and loathing of a 24-hour shelter. If you want the homeless out of sight, why not give them a 24-hour place to go? The current shelter is open almost 24-hours already anyway (so there won’t be additional cost), the staff just has to force the clients to leave and walk our streets all day. Having a 24-hour shelter is proven to be the best way to address the problem, because services are much easier and cheaper to supply, and the clients are in much better condition to receive the help. When will we quit electing and listening to the uninformed, mean, prejudiced and those with hidden agendas? |

[“Vaccine”] The White house, on Tuesday, declined nine times to say there should be a Federal mandate to require vaccinations against Measles. Suddenly this is a State issue. If measles are such a danger (which they are), why doesn’t the President issue an Executive Order requiring vaccination? |

I did a little driving today around Marathon and saw way too many people driving without paying attention, not signaling and talking on cell phones. It’s a wonder there are not more people killed on US1 the way people drive these days. My prediction for the Ragnar relay race on? Two people are going down. |

[Scamming the System] This is exactly what Mitt Romney said that 40+% of the people are too dependent on the government. They have learned to work the system. A Ford Dealer’s Report – From Tom Selkis’ (Latham Ford) Facebook – True story yesterday at the dealership. “I’ll try to make this as short and to the point as I can. One of my salesmen here had a woman in his office yesterday wanting to lease a brand new Focus. As he was reviewing her credit application with her he noticed she was on social security disability. He said to her you don’t look like you’re disabled and unable to work. She said well I’m really not. I could work if I wanted to, but I make more now than I did when I was working and got hurt (non-disabling injury). She said the government sends her $1500.00 a month in one check. And she gets $700.00 a month on an EBT card (food stamps), and $800.00 a month for rent. Oh yeah, and 250 minutes free on her phone. That is just south of $3500.00 a month. When she was working, she was taking home about $330.00 per week. Do the math and then ask yourself why the hell should she go back to work. If you multiply that by millions of people, you start to realize the scope of the problem we face as a country. Once the socialists have 51% of the population in that same scenario, we are finished. The question is when do we cross that threshold, if we haven’t already, and there are not enough people working to pay enough taxes to support the non-working people? Riots?? Be prepared to protect your homes. She didn’t lease the Focus here because the dealer down the road beat our deal by $10.00/month. Glad to know she is so frugal with OUR hard earned money.” All we works have to do is stop paying taxes and the blood suckers will die off in days! |

[Eagle Scout Project benefits Big Pine Community] Reef Landrum, a member of Boy Scout Troop 573, recently completed his Eagle Scout project. Reef selected a project that would benefit our local community and local wildlife. With the help of donations from the local community, a partnership with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and labor supplied by troop leaders and fellow Boy Scouts they recently constructed 40 trash can corrals that will be given out to local residents. The corrals are made of pressure treated lumber, will hold two large trash cans, and will be available free (first-come, first-served) to residents.Deer, raccoons, and other wildlife have become accustomed to breaking into our unsecured trash cans for an easy meal. This creates an unhealthy situation for the wildlife, and leaves the residents of the community with a mess to clean up. If you are interested in getting a free trash can corral for you or your neighbor please call Kristie Killam, Park Ranger for the National Key Deer Refuge at 305-304-9625 or email Kristie_Killam@fws.govReef thanks Friends and Volunteers of Refuges (FAVOR), Manley DeBoer, Overseas Lumber, and Home Depot of Marathon for providing the supplies needed to complete this project. In addition, thanks to the Big Pine staff of Coldwell Real Estate and US1 Radio for help funding the project and getting the word out. |

[IKC Denial] The idiot in Islamorada that was arrested for firing a .22 caliber rifle was not a member of the IKC. All members of the IKC are responsible and well trained in the use of air rifles. The IKC members do not drop iguanas with firearms, they only shoot with high powered air rifles. All members must follow the rules of engagement and rule 16 states that the shooter should know his target and what’s behind the target before he/she pulls the trigger. Lucky the Islamorada idiot didn’t shoot his eye out. |

I was astounded by the number of anti-vaccination, anti-science and climate change deniers that keep showing up in the daily CT. I didn’t realize that the Boko Haram had made such inroads into the Keys. (The name ‘Boko Haram’ is usually translated as Western education is forbidden.) |

Dumbing down in America. |
[Computer Stuff] Old school is good school as far as computers and programs go. I have systems that are still running W98, XP and Vista that do exactly what I want to do and run my very expensive old hardware perfectly. Sure it is nice to have the latest tech stuff, but if I can do what I want to do, why should I waste my money? When my stuff breaks, then maybe I will buy new goodies. |
Thanks for yesterday’s post about The Rillera Brothers. Nice touch with the “I Wanna’ Love You” video. I remember Butch playing drums for Redbone–a very good band! Video |

February’s First Friday event (that would be Feb. 6th) will feature Commissioner George Neugent, who will be available to field any questions you have on any topic having to do with the County or the BOCC. This will be a friendly, informal opportunity to find out everything you ever wanted to know about our County government. Open to Chamber members, bring a sack lunch and join us on the picnic tables at noon. |
This is true for many of us. They wake up mean and stay that way all day long. Must be exhausting. |
[Commission Meeting Review] Where to start? Eimers decision delayed for two weeks. Why? So they can have a closed door meeting? Just keep delaying hoping people will forget? Why does Key West need 4 wheel drive crew cab trucks for the police department? Are they going off road somewhere? Huge waste of money. Item 12 – Margaret Romero actually made sense. And Yaniz wants to make it as hard as possible for the homeless to get to the shelter. ie – Rockland Key Item 17 – Only in Key West would you need an easement for a roof/balcony overhang that’s been there for 100 years. When will the city give Rossi a longer neck on his microphone so he can be heard? Better yet, why doesn’t he lose weight so he can get closer? Item 16 – Yaniz grandstanding again, ccomplaining about the Navy, the school board, the county, and the commission for not doing something about KOTS. Well “Fat”, you are the commission, what have you been doing? The city would be wise to dump KOTS and go back to the way it used to be. Save the city millions, save the sheriff millions, save the hospital millions. The homeless are out of site at night anyway. (but that would take all the fun out of being a cop in Key West). It’s the Commission’s fault there is a KOTS. You caused it. You own it. Deal with it or dump it! Did Mayor Cates really refer to the homeless as “dirt bags”? The citizens from the golf course were especially amusing. Why are you afraid to use College Drive? Are the homeless going to attack you when you drive by in your Mercedes? So use the east entrance. Fingerprint people who sleep at KOTS? What a dumb idea. Who’s going to pay for that? Paranoia runs rampant on the golf course. Sloan, next time you want to run over your time, pretend you’re deaf like the guy before you. Give the commission a raise to $50K and $60K? More than double? The commission is already costing the city $36K+ each. It’s a part time job! The commission doesn’t care what citizens have to say. They’ve already made up their minds. The only time I’ve seen any signs of life during citizen comments was when the gentleman said they deserve a raise. The all were paying attention then. All in all it was very entertaining. Sloan is right, they should have charged admission. |

[Sewers] In the DOAH court and acknowledged by Judge Sellers, FKAA promised routine flushing to prevent blockages caused by inadequate scouring velocities in the design. Inadequate velocity exists on every cul de sac and on most forcemains (including gravity sewered areas) during periods of low flow. Where do they get sufficient water at high enough pressure and rate to flush all of these pipes? The pressure needs to exceed the back pressure of all of the grinder pumps manifolded into that portion of the system. The quantity needs to displace the entire contents of the pipe. The short answer is they probably cannot and will not, and a blockage often requires excavation and replacement of the pipe. If they somehow can manage to flush the pipes, it may introduce more water than gravity infiltration ever would. This will raise rates for all FKAA sewer customers due to increased manpower, cost of water used, cost of additional equipment, cost of additional treatment. It is a lose-lose situation that could be resolved by abandoning E-1 brand grinders. |

The Big Lie: 5.6% Unemployment www.gallup.com/…/chairman/181469/big-lie-unemployment.aspx … The official unemployment rate, … Gallup defines a good job as 30+ hours per week for an organization that provides a regular paycheck. Right now, Right now, we’re hearing much celebrating from the media, the White House and Wall Street about how unemployment is “down” to 5.6%. The cheerleading for this number is deafening. The media loves a comeback story, the White House wants to score political points and Wall Street would like you to stay in the market.None of them will tell you this: If you, a family member or anyone is unemployed and has subsequently given up on finding a job — if you are so hopelessly out of work that you’ve stopped looking over the past four weeks — the Department of Labor doesn’t count you as unemployed. That’s right. While you are as unemployed as one can possibly be, and tragically may never find work again, you are not counted in the figure we see relentlessly in the news — currently 5.6%. Right now, as many as 30 million Americans are either out of work or severely underemployed. Trust me, the vast majority of them aren’t throwing parties to toast “falling” unemployment. There’s another reason why the official rate is misleading. Say you’re an out-of-work engineer or healthcare worker or construction worker or retail manager: If you perform a minimum of one hour of work in a week and are paid at least $20 — maybe someone pays you to mow their lawn — you’re not officially counted as unemployed in the much-reported 5.6%. Few Americans know this.Yet another figure of importance that doesn’t get much press: those working part time but wanting full-time work. If you have a degree in chemistry or math and are working 10 hours part time because it is all you can find — in other words, you are severely underemployed — the government doesn’t count you in the 5.6%. Few Americans know this. Now you do |
