Kudos to County Cops for nabbing upper Keys creep home invasion burglar.  Good job, Ramsey, for getting it done with the focused special quick response Upper Keys personal.  Many local crimes are committed by just a few individuals who need to be weeded out for the benefit of us normal citizens.

Rowells Marina is a waste of Monroe County taxpayers’ money. All you read is how everyone did their homework and this is such a good deal it can’t fail. Who in their right mind would purchase this marina for more than what the two appraisals came in at?

Gas is $3.35 in Marathon at Tom Thumb, 3.59 to 3.65 in Big Pine. Does it really cost that much to deliver gas another 20 miles? I spent over $200 in gas for the truck and boat, and saved enough to buy a nice lunch. I will boycott the Shell station thieves as should we all when possible. Even gas in Key West is less.

thanksgiving turkey gobble

It’s a breezy day in the Florida Keys as I write this to you this morning from our porch. I have my espresso in hand and dogs at my feet. The wind is blowing about 25 and everything is in a constant state of movement as I peer from my elevated vantage point.  The ocean is showing the effects of the constant airflow by creating small gentle waves lapping under our dock. We generally are protected from waves by a reef system that runs the entire length of the Keys; so having the sound of water under the dock is somehow soothing and welcome.

We had a cold front come through last night with 45 mph winds and a lot of Mother Nature’s thunder and fireworks. The grand-kids spent the night and were sleeping by the time the strong stuff hit. Our two dogs handle this challenge totally differently. Anderson could care less and Gracie thinks the world is coming to an end. As the house shook with the violent pops and cracks from the sky, our boy didn’t as much as raise his head and little Gracie could not get herself close enough into my arms. The good news is we all made it through the ordeal. I always appreciate the morning after a storm because you realize life is back to normal. Last night as we watched the sideways rain and palm trees bending to what seemed the outer limits of their structural possibilities, it’s amazing that this new morning brings a soothing calm. Happy Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving day. “This is not what I had in mind!

So where did this ‘quarter million users a year’ of the crumbling Old Seven Mile Bridge number come from?  Before we taxpayers, that is the ones of us who are paying attention, commit $60M  to this boondoggle we deserve to see some independent confirmation of these numbers.   I remember when someone stated that thousands of people a day visited Pigeon Key.  Maybe, but you could not see them from the new bridge.  Now, even with the State sponsored $250,000 per year ferry boat service, local pacification boondoggle (who wets their beak on this one?) the place is deserted.  Take those millions and put them into the sewer system so that nobody has an individual grinder pump gizmo in their front yard.

[“Swiss Mincome”] That would work in the short term, but would cause rapid inflation and a endless cycle of having to increase the mincome. As every parent eventually learns, people don’t place too great a value on things they get for free. They will blow their mincome on frivolous items and be demanding more. Nah, the programs for the poor are better, more specialized and they can take steps to become productive. A help up, not a handout, is what many of the poor want. They are people too and most have pride and want to feel appreciated, earn their own income. Many rich people continue to work or be productive in some manner (like founding a charity) because we all want to feel productive in some manner.

This Thanksgiving cherish the time spent with your family as a reminder of why you moved very far away from your family.

[Old Seven Mile Bridge fix] Figure out some way to repair about 200 yards out from shore so people can safely walk. I say walk out on it, take some pictures and look down into the water and watch the sunset or whatever.   There is no difference between the first 200 yards and the last 200 yards, looks-wise.   Do this while preserving the present look of the original roadway so people can see what it was like.  Spending multi millions to modernize the whole thing so a few Pigeon Key people can drive their cars out there and it will just be another expensive non-historic looking bridge to nowhere.  Someone is committing future tax money to this project to be paid by people who aren’t even here yet to have a say in the matter.

religion politics zone

thanksgiving pilgrim kids globe

It’s not too difficult to understand our two major political groups.  I look at it like another age old question; Is it more painful for a woman to have a baby, or a man to get kicked in the nuts?  While there’s no scientific data that I know of to determine the true answer, I think of it like this.  Many times after the birth of a child you may hear a woman say “Honey, I think it’s time we had another child”.  Never, ever, ever, will you hear a man say, “I think I would like another kick in the nuts!”  Once again, our current political machine has found a way to take your hard earned money away to finance others problems. I leave it to you to decide which is which. Oh, by the way, no attempt has been made here to belittle women.  I love them all!

[Regressive Hypocrisy # 15] Republicans Rob Portman, Dick Cheney and Newt Gingrich were all adamantly against Gay marriage until their family members came out of the closet! Eight Republicans recently joined Democrats in voting to ban discrimination of Gays in the workplace. (They all have Gay relatives).

FTR, in yesterday’s post, repeated misinformation that has been circulating FOX News for quite a while even though it is untrue. He stated that the Cleveland Clinic laid off 3000 employees because of the ACA. This is not true. They offered 3000 eligible employees voluntary retirement. After many repeats of misinformation on FOX, the Cleveland Clinic finally contacted the network of its errors. Fox News will go to any length to discredit The Affordable Healthcare Act. The Clinic has recently posted the following support of The Affordable Care Act. “We believe reform is necessary because the current state is unsustainable. The Affordable Healthcare Act is a step toward that change and we believe more changes will evolve as there are still many uncertainties. Hospitals must be responsible and do what we can to prepare and support the law”.

May your Thanksgiving dinner conversation be more coherent than a Republican presidential debate.

The Democrat’s guide to talking politics with your republican uncle, At yourrepublicanuncle.com… a website that seems to work well enough, put up by the Democratic National Committee.

“This time of year, the only thing more annoying than holiday traffic is an awkward conversation with family about politics,” DNC Digital Director Matt Compton wrote in an email announcing the site. “We designed YourRepublicanUncle.com so that it look greats and loads quickly on your phone — no getting ambushed when you go back for seconds on stuffing.”

I like the line drawing in the sidebar of a table place setting with a mobile phone next to the knife, presumably open to Your Republican Uncle, so you can be a good Thanksgiving companion by referring to the Democratic talking points during dinner.

What if an aspect of being a Republican uncle is expecting nieces and nephews to speak sincerely drawing on thoughts that actually exist in their head?

This is not satire Ed. Nor was the Obamacare at thanksgiving as you incorrectly alluded yesterday.

from the right

thanksgiving friendsYessir on this Thanksgiving Day I’ve got a lot to be thankful for.

I’m thankful to have had the love of my late first wife. With her we raised two fine daughters. Each is an independent soul, they were raised to be self-sufficient. I’m thankful that each of our girls began working while still in high school, they learned life lessons that have served them well in their life’s journey.  I’m thankful that each of our girls found men they could love and respect. I’m thankful that their husbands reciprocate that love and respect. Each has been married to the same man for many years. I’m thankful that our girls have graced us with 4 wonderful grandchildren. Each has his/her own special talents and each is striving to achieve to the limits of their ability.

I’m thankful that after my first wife passed that I was fortunate enough to find a second soul mate that I love and respect. Our lives together for the past 14 years have made me a very happy man. She is a wonderful woman.

I’m thankful for the courage and determination of the members of our family who have chosen to serve in our military. One is on active duty in the Navy, the Sea Bees, and has had 3 deployments to the mid east. We have family members and extended family members who serve/have served in the Navy, Marines, The Coast Guard, and the Air Force. I’m thankful that each and every one of these dedicated people have served with honor and have returned to their loved ones intact.  I’m thankful for the courage and dedication of so many American service members who have sacrificed so much that we may be free.

I’m thankful that I was fortunate enough to have had a career in public service that was an adventure rather than just a job.

I’m thankful that aside from the usual barnacles and aches that afflict us elderly types we are both in good spirits and in decent health. I’d be very thankful if you did not tell my wife I put her in the “elderly” category.

I’m thankful for the great friends that we have made here in BPK, there are no better people in the entire world. I’m thankful that we will be sharing the hospitality of very special friends as their guests today in a feast of fine food, adult beverage, and laughter.

I’m thankful for the wisdom of our founding fathers who ensured our freedom by crafting our Constitution and our Bill of Rights. I’m thankful that because of their wisdom and courage we still have the rights enumerated in our Bill of Rights and Constitution. I am thankful that so many Americans are dedicated to protecting these rights.

I’m thankful for our Deer Ed’s Coconut Telegraph. I think it is a unique place and that there is no better place on the web or a soapbox to deliver your personal opinions. Thanx Deer Ed.

And finally, I’m very thankful that the mid-term elections are only a few months away.

I sincerely hope that you will have enjoyed this Thanksgiving as much as I’m certain that we will. And a happy Hanukkah to our Jewish friends.
