[First Good School News] Monroe County public schools were among 22 of Florida’s 67 districts that earned As from the state for the 2014-2015 school year, according to a state report released Friday.

[“Arthritis”] The Keys, or any place with high humidity, is bad for arthritis. That’s why Arizona is filled with arthritis people. Are you taking any statin drugs? Statins definitely cause joint pain. Try taking Flaxseed oil 1000 mg capsules 2-3 times a day with meals. It also lowers triglycerides.
bike bell

[Question About The Bike Path] If I am walking on the right side, does a bike rider have an obligation to let me know they are coming from behind?  A few of them, usually the ones clad in stretchy, clown clothes, have passed without a word at a high speed, missing me by about a foot. It scared the hell out of me and seems dangerous.

[Sewers] Has anyone ever considered that the new sewers and grinder pumps just might work perfectly? Is Conspiracyman behind all the naysaying?

[Switching Owners] The lease for The Wreck in Grassy Key just reverted back to the original owners. Betty, who had the Wreck, and her husband, who has the Wooden Spoon, will now run a run-down deli.

The parking at the Wreck is a hassle and I couldn’t find a place to park so I popped back onto the Road (which was not too simple to do) and went over to the Outpost.  The $7 hamburger is good and comes with a little side salad. Grassy Key does not offer much.

A few words from PPHPOA President Bob Audette. Newsletter

[“I laugh at people knocking tilapia. What the hell do you think flounder and any bottom feeding animals eat] There is a difference. Most tilapia are raised in tanks, and a large percentage of them (80%) come from China. They are raised on garbage and excrement that is thrown in the water. Free swimming fish eat poop, but that is not their entire diet. Enjoy your tilapia. As my dear old Grannie used to say, “You are what you eat.” Link

[Citizen of the Day] I’m always amused when they show a fat person who says their favorite thing is windsurfing or paddleboarding, etc. and you know they haven’t been physically capable of that sport in years. I guess many of us live in our memories. If they were being honest they would say their favorite thing is watching sitcoms and snaking.

Those store brands are just fine. It’s always been an expensive place to live, we just never bragged about it.

[Zika Virus] We operate a guest house and have had two cancellations so far by pregnant woman fearing tiny-head syndrome caused by the Zika mosquito.

5.1 magnitude earthquake among several temblors in Oklahoma. Oklahoma has had more earthquakes in the last month than in all of history, yet the fracking companies say it’s just coincidence and nothing to do with their undermining the ground.

If God were a woman, most of us would go to hell without even knowing why.

[Citizens Insurance Prices] We are looking for a quote for a homeowners and a wind policy for our house on Cudjoe Key. We are currently insured by Fuller’s insurance out of Key West and for some reason our fire policy is not being continued as of our renewal date in May 2016. So, if possible, we would like to get a quote for a homeowners policy for our house at 22938 John Avery Lane, Cudjoe Key, FL. Also, does it make any sense to get a Wind quote or a Flood quote from anyone since they are all from the same carrier?

benedict-arnold[The Making of a Traitor] In 1780 the question of Benedict Arnold’s rank was again brought up in Congress, and decided against him by a majority of nearly three to one [because he was an asshole] . It was the first occasion on which the yeas and nays were entered in the journals. Arnold had previously received a letter from one of his friends in Congress, who assured him, that, in the present temper of the members, he could have no hope of the restoration of his rank. Piqued and mortified at this obstinate determination to withhold from him what he deemed to be a right, and from the refusal of which his reputation was suffering, he asked leave of General Schuyler to retire; but by the persuasion of that officer, and a representation of the absolute necessity of his services at so critical a moment, he was induced again to suspend his purpose. This would soon lead to his betraying the fort at West Point to the British.

This was the first time the new Congress had registered the results of a vote; the yeas and nays.

[“Al Jazeera America closing”] “No One cared” Oh, people cared all right.  Al Jazeera America  has the best and most honest world news. A lot of people, like the poster, can’t see outside their realm and miss the most honest news there is because of their prejudices. They settle for biased news from the likes of FOX and MSNBC.
trader-joes[Store Brands] I must disagree with the poster who said that WD’s store brands aren’t as good as the national brands. Winn Dixie is following the business model of Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods and many others in branding their own quality products and selling them cheaper. Every one of WD’s brands is better than the national brands and cheaper. If you doubt it, do a blind taste test. I did.  One example is their wine label Lisabell. Their pinot noir (“peanut of the night” ha) from Italy. It is the best I’ve ever had.
[“Arthritis”] I eat flax seed flour every day in my oatmeal. It’s supposed to keep arteries flexible, which, I suppose, would be beneficial to arthritis suffers or those with other joint pains. Flax seed, in any form, is good for the heart.

I was half snoozing, watching the Fox Channel when the commentator said that there is a company releasing bio-engineered mosquitos to breed with the Sika mosquitoes. The offspring cannot harbor the virus – or something like that. Anyway, they showed them releasing lots of mosquitoes from small screened cages. Lots  of mosquitoes. That caught my attention a bit seeing mosquitoes being released? It was yucky. Then the guy mentioned that this process was experimental and it would soon be tried in the Florida Keys! AaaGggggggg!

OK you got my attention. Who, what, where, and when, will this happen? or did it already happen and we’re all doomed? Big bunch of questions.

[Sewers] A great story was sent to the email account that was set up to collect eye-witness reports of Cudjoe Regional sewer failures. On Pirates Road in Little Torch, the contractor’s heavy machine setting a grinder pump collapsed the homeowner’s septic tank top. Nobody was home, so they just covered the hole with plywood and spread gravel over it like nothing happened. Several security cameras recorded the action. I love it! It was not really a sewer system failure but a fun story anyway. The Barometer quoted Tom Walker as saying FKAA only had a few startup glitches and the system works fine. Yeah, sure it does, Tom. If Steve Estes believed you, he may be the only one. I’m waiting for the videos of raw sewage flooding the road and panicked sewer servicemen running in circles. We will put them on the web for the world to see what “works fine” looks like in Cudjoe. We need to keep our old septic systems for back-up, and saving us $1,000 for each abandonment won’t hurt at all!

radicchio-bean--salad-300hRadicchio with Cannellini Bean and Celery Salad

1 head radicchio, quartered and cored, leaves separated and torn in half

1 15 ounce can cannellini beans
½ cup red onion, finely chopped
½ cup celery, finely chopped
3 tablespoons flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped
1 bunch scallions, thinly sliced

1/4 cup unfiltered cider vinegar
2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 tin anchovy fillets in oil, drained and finely chopped
1/2 cup or less extra-virgin olive oil
Kosher salt and ground black pepper to taste

To make the dressing. On a cutting board, using the side of your knife, press and smash the garlic with a pinch of salt until it forms a smooth paste.

The National Marine Sanctuary is going to set the rules for boating, fishing and diving in the sanctuary for the next 10 to 20 years. I wonder what they will take away from us this time. Every time they meet is seems they take away one more beach or fish or access to areas or something. It’s always something.
[Car Conspiracy] If a self-driving car hits me who is responsible? the owner? the manufacturer? the programmer? the satellite people? or all the above? and who will be allowed to own one? Will the State make us buy these or will they run them as a profit making government controlled thing?
jersey-girls15[Jersey Girls] Stephen Hawking warned that one of the greatest threats to mankind today is genetically modified viruses. At another time he said the primary threat to mankind is migrating Jersey girls. Hawking stated that these women are immune to most antibiotics and pesticides and can cause instant deafness in individuals they come in contact with due to their loud whining. He said they were contributors to global warming because of their chain smoking and continuous methane gas release. Hawking was also concerned that the exponential growth of this species could wipe out most life forms, especially in a contained area like the Florida Keys where their contagion can rapidly spread.  He also said in a surprise comment that getting rid of them was necessary but a shame, as he did find some of them “cute and cuddly.”

I vote we change the spelling of February to get rid of the r. We all pronounce it Feb-u-ary, not Feb-ru-ary. So lets get this taken care of today.

[Phishing] Nigerian Astronaut, Air Force Major Abacha Tunde wants to come home. In the 14-years since he has been on the space station, he has accumulated flight pay and interest amounting to almost $ 15,000,000 American Dollars. This is held in a trust at the Lagos National Savings and Trust Association. If we can obtain access to this money, we can place a down payment with the Russian Space Authorities for a Soyuz return flight to bring him back to Earth. I am told this will cost $ 3,000,000 American Dollars. In order to access his trust fund we need your assistance.

Consequently, my colleagues and I are willing to transfer the total amount to your account or subsequent disbursement, since we as civil servants are prohibited by the Code of Conduct Bureau (Civil Service Laws) from opening and/ or operating foreign accounts in our names … bla, bla, bla …

factory girl hammer[First U.S. Factory in Cuba] The Obama administration has approved the first U.S. factory in Cuba in more than half a century, allowing a two-man company from Alabama to build a plant assembling as many as 1,000 small tractors a year for sale to private farmers in Cuba. Letting an American tractor company operate inside a Cuban government facility would have been unimaginable before Presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro declared on Dec. 17, 2014, that they would restore diplomatic relations and move to normalize trade, travel and other aspects of the long-broken bilateral relationship.

feeding deer[Tourist Blocking Traffic] Today I witnessed a very rude and impatient act.  A visitor to BPK stopped to take a picture of a Key Deer and the van behind them blew their horn.  If you are reading this and you did it, shame on you! The tourist are a fact of life here and nobody should be in such a hurry they can’t wait for a few minutes while somebody snaps a picture.  I’ll bet even you took a picture of a Key Deer the first time you saw one.

[“4 foot leash law”] Long retractable dog leashes. I guess if you are tripped by a leash over 48″ long, they would be liable.  If you’re killed, it’s not manslaughter though, that’s dogslaughter.

Sunday was Valentine’s Day and everybody want to give a Heart full of candy to their loved one, but if the heart was up-side-down it would make more sense! Who was Valentine anyway?
