 [Once Upon a Time] Safety Pin Phone. In the early 60’s all us inner-city kids used to make free phone calls in phone booths (no cellphones yet) by sticking the pointy end of an opened safety pin into the cord that went from the handset to the pay phone. As soon as we’d touch the other end of the safety pin to the metal coin cover plate on the phone, we’d get a dial tone and be able to call anywhere for free—even long distance as long as it was direct dial (something new in those days). We never called long distance because no one knew anyone far away. But we could call girls from school and talk dirty.It took a few years for Ma Bell to figure out why their cords all had a lot of pin holes in them and that’s why they covered all the cords in flexible metal sheathing. It was nice while it lasted. Another bonus of phone booths and city kids was that we could unscrew the cap on the handset ear end and remove the little speaker. No wires, it just came out. I strung six of them in series and cut out holes in the rear window shelf of my $50 car and had great sound from my $2 junk yard radio. No one was sixteen yet so we’d drive that car in a friend’s field. The speakers lasted longer than the car. |

 Scotland suddenly has a lot of mosquitoes. Surprisingly large populations of mosquitoes have been detected all over the country. The arrival of increasing numbers of mosquitoes in regions where they haven’t previously been a significant presence, for example, means the potential arrival of mosquito-borne diseases in places ill-equipped to deal with them. The latest country to experience this first-hand is Scotland, a country whose primary flying irritant has been the humble midge. Link |
