[“Shop with Mom and Pop”] I support our local, independent owned business as much as possible. I gladly pay a bit more for merchandise to friends and neighbors than to corporate greed mongers who provide minimal service, pay employees as little as possible, provide lousy service and take their profits out of town. I refuse to buy anything but canned goods or dry goods from our BPK grocery store, having gotten tired of sorting through nearly spoiled produce or getting home only to find out that the chicken was rancid or that the meat was of poor quality, tough and dried out. I buy meat at Murray’s, produce from the Flea Market (when they’re open), or go to Publix out of necessity. Please support our local small business owners. They need our help to survive and support their families. |
I like the idea that Bealls and Winn Dixie are expanding; will the expansion include a liquor store at the WD? The new Bealls in Marathon is lovely; it would be nice if the one in BPK was its equal. |
[Newest Cutter Open House] Thank you all for continued support, great articles, and response regarding the Raymond Evans. As a reminder, today, Monday, is the last port visit to Mallory Square, open to the public from 10-2. |
You could always tell when Jimi Hendrix was really in the groove. He’d play his guitar with his mouth wide open. |

[Iguanas] Among their more interesting defense systems is their parietal eye, which is located on top of their head. While this organ cannot discern shapes, it helps the animals detect light and dark from above to avoid aerial attack. Additionally, if attacked, an iguana can drop its tail and flee. Nerve endings allow the tail to continue moving to distract the predator. |
[“Bad mechanic”] Look for the motor vehicle repair registration certificate. They all must have a certificate and post it. |
Are the primary elections tomorrow? I must have missed the memo. |

How come FTR didn’t mention Eric Holder quieting the rioters in Ferguson, MO? Could it be it’s just because Obama sent him? Nah, no one’s that prejudiced! |

A vacation photo to share. I think the elephant is sick and the big elephant is pushing her to the hospital. Hey, boys will be boys! |
[Reminiscing on Food] I’m no longer a Piner and haven’t been for a while having moved upstate. I was in Eden Pines for a few years when there was no Winn Dixie. I had to drive the old bridges to Marathon for groceries or anything else, which was most everything the Tom Thumb on BPK didn’t carry (Tom Thumb then and now don’t compare). BPK residents were thankful when Winn Dixie arrived in our small hometown. Thankful. I see continuing negative blasts here on the CT against WD, and I don’t know (or care) if they are justified or just hateful posters trying to make a point or pick a fight. I only remember how long a drive it was over the old bridges to grocery shop. You want Winn Dixie gone? As General Colin Powell said ‘be very careful what you wish for, you just may get it.” |
Israel has the land they hold now by right of conquest over somebody else, just like we do and like everyone else in the world has to. Maybe someday things will swing some other way, but for now, might makes right. |
Can FTR please quote Holder and the President when they “made it obvious” they wanted to “pillory and convict” officer Wilson “no matter what the facts”? I must have missed it. |
Are you confused by what is going on in the Middle East? Let me explain. We support the Iraqi government in the fight against ISIS. We don’t like ISIS, but ISIS is supported by Saudi Arabia who we do like. We don’t like Assad in Syria. We support the fight against him, but ISIS is also fighting against him. We don’t like Iran, but Iran supports the Iraqi government in its fight against ISIS. So some of our friends support our enemies, some enemies are now our friends, and some of our enemies are fighting against our other enemies, who we want to lose, but we don’t want our enemies who are fighting our enemies to win.If the people we want to defeat are defeated, they could be replaced by people we like even less. And all this was started by us invading a country to drive out terrorists who were not actually there until we went in to drive them out. It’s quite simple, really. |

[Identity Theft] I’ve got to laugh, why in the hell would anyone want my personal information? Even I don’t want my personal information! |
[Presidents and Golf] According to a Golf Digest article from 2008, Eisenhower played golf more than 800 times during his presidency. And Ike’s presidency wasn’t a time of tranquility in America or the world: The Civil Rights movement and Southern desegregation battles were under way; Castro came to power in Cuba; the French pulled out of Indochina in defeat and America began stepping up its own involvement in Vietnam; the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union was getting very chilly indeed. And yet Eisenhower managed to spend more than 1,000 days of his presidency (according to Golf Digest’s count) playing golf or involved in some other golf-related activity. That is devotion to the game. The man who planned D-Day and who later became president was one of the biggest fans of the game who ever wore a uniform, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. Eisenhower spent the days immediately before the war stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas, where he enjoyed the excellent Tillinghast-designed course on base (the base’s best feature, according to more than a few who’ve been stationed there). During the war he didn’t have time for leisurely rounds, but he did manage at least a few holes almost daily at Coombe Hill Golf Club in Surrey, just south of London. Eisenhower’s “Telegraph Cottage” retreat was situated just off the 14th tee, and he lived—and golfed—there almost constantly while planning the Normandy invasion. In his book When War Played Through, author and Golf Digest writer John Strege tells how the attack on Pearl Harbor interrupted a weekly golf outing among Admiral Husband E. Kimmel, Commander in Chief of the Pacific Fleet; the Army’s Lieutenant General Walter C. Short; and Captain Louis Truman, all of whom were dressed for their Sunday morning game when the Japanese struck. Their game, quite obviously, was postponed—as were many games. For the next few years, few people would have time for golf, and of those that did, some might have wished otherwise. |

Is Al Sharpton getting smaller or is his head growing? |
Collecting the raw sewage, that has been going on and into the ground, freshwater lens and canals for decades, then treating to a high level, and then disposing of it in a deep injection well is inarguably the way to deal with sewage. The lens, of which you speak, was turned into a witches brew when Hurricane Georges & Wilma’s flood waters overflowed drain fields, septic tanks and cesspits that still exist today. Speaking at length with Dr. Brian Lapointe, He and me are in complete agreement on grinder pumps and pressurized, thermally welded, small pipe (small pipe tech) being the RIGHT WAY to address central collection and disposal, especially in environmentally sensitive areas of low lying flat terrain. This due in great part to the smaller footprint and shallowness of trenching for the small piping that is used.Argue if you chose Walt, however, The City of Marathon is on record as formally saying the “Grassy Key Plant,” a totally grinder pump small pipe technology system, is the most trouble free of the 5 systems they have.Walt, in your letter, you stated, “George is right.” So, leave it at that; leave out, as you always try to plug into the mix, the worst case scenarios of houses blowing up, causing more pollution than cesspitts, houses having to be torn down due to sewer back ups and now your concern for the growing population of Key deer. ~George Neugent |
[Funny Personal ad on Craigslist] “Looking for a woman who has more money than me —unemployed 58 male in lower keys or key west looking for a woman who has more money than me and a lot of free time to spend it on me for shopping, dinners, travel, fishing, etc —–a boat would be a BIG plus ——i’m not not a drunk or druggie ,but i could try—–i used to be skinny and good looking ,not so much now!—-must love small dogs, and have a sense of humor—-PS please send picture of boat—thank you” |

Before you vote on Tuesday, remember that Mark Jones, who is running for re-election as a judge, was the guy who let Randy Acevedo off the hook without a day of jail time in spite of the fact that he was found guilty of being complicit with his wife in stealing nearly a half a million dollars from the Monroe County School District. That’s a half a million dollars that could have gone toward the education of our children rather than being spent on “Naughty Nurse” and “Ride ‘Em Cowboy” outfits for the Acevedos. |

Would someone in charge of maintenance at the BPK Winn Dixie shopping center (if there is anyone) please cut down those shrubs at the corners in the parking lot, or even better, just get rid of them so they don’t grow back, so drivers can see what’s coming around the corner. Same goes for where you pull out onto Key Deer Blvd., remove that foliage so you can see what’s coming up the road |
[“Short term rental ban crammed down our throats about 15 years ago by a few ‘haves'”] It was a majority of residents who voted for the ban. The only “few ‘haves'” were the realtors who supported vacation rentals and absentee owners who don’t care about the community. The majority were, and still are, against short term rentals for less than thirty days. |

[Opinion of Big Pine] It’s a shame about Winn-Dixie Plaza. I haven’t been in a few years because there aren’t a lot of good places to stay in Big Pine anymore. The Barnacle used to be my favorite B&B, but you know it’s seen better days. Deer Run is too militantly ‘green’ to consider. But back to the plaza. Does anyone remember the guy who tried to set up an internet gambling venture about 5 years ago? I popped in once to use the internet to check email (pre-tablet days), but there’s no way I was going to gamble online. That’s the world’s biggest sucker play. I came back a year later and he was gone too. I always got good service in the Radio Shack. I’ll be back to Big Pine one day even if I have to stay in the Fishing Lodge. It’s nice too, great, if not ridiculously expensive, general store, but not really my cup of tea |
[Bogus Middle East revisionism won’t go unchallenged anymore] Israel became a nation in 1312 B.C.E.–two thousand years before the rise of Islam. Arab refugees began identifying themselves as part of a Palestinian people in 1967–two decades after the establishment of the modern State of Israel. Since the Jewish conquest in 1272 B.C.E, the Jews had dominion over the land for one thousand years with a continuous presence in the land for the past 3,300 years. The only Arab domination since the conquest in 635 C.E. lasted no more than 22 years. For over 3,300 years, Jerusalem has been the Jewish capital. Jerusalem has never been the capital of any Arab or Muslim entity. Even when the Jordanians occupied Jerusalem, they never sought to make it their capital, and Arab leaders did not come to visit.I’m giving this one to the Jews! |
I hate to point this out but that cornhole game is one of the lamest excuses for fun I ever seen. It’s right up there with watching MMA[?] on TV. |

Don’t use grenades on your boat! |
[Optimism] I work on keeping my glass 1/2 full. It’s hard. Maybe, just maybe, we need what we are getting. A President that is not a leader. A teaching system that moves young folks along that can’t read, write or do basic math. A country that is not respected or feared (fear is fine with me). A government that is in the most private parts of our lives. Maybe this is a teachable moment. Vote wisely my friends. |
Dear Monroe County Voter: In the 15 years that I have been your Monroe County Commissioner, I have always placed a premium on preparation and active participation in issued based meetings; that is in sharp contrast to my opponent.Over the previous 4 years while updating our most important document, The Comprehensive Plan, which will guide Monroe County policy for the next 20 years, my opponent has chosen not to participate in this public process; he has not provided any input at these meetings.Qualifications for County Commissioner must include attending BOCC meetings, giving input to the Commission, participating in the budget process, attending FEMA flood map update meetings, and especially participation in the public process of updating the County Comprehensive Plan. I am the only candidate who has done any of these things, and I’ve done them all.Life has taught me that it takes preparation, persistence and determination to solve problems and resolve differences through transparent and relationship building discourse at the local, state and federal level. Because of those relationships I have fostered, I truly believe these last years have been my most productive.
If you share my beliefs that Experience, Relationships and Participation Matter in representing the interest of all Monroe County residents, then please vote George Neugent for County Commissioner on August 26th. My most sincere and enthusiastic regards, |

Michael Brown’s murder is on all the news channels wall-to-wall. There must have been something else happening in the world besides that tragedy! |
[Phishing Trip] Dear Good Friend, I am Eng. Fazel AliGambo, Director Of Inspection Unit of(ECOWAS Board Inspection Agent) in Greater Accra field International Airport West Africa. But I will share it 50% to you and 50% to me But you have to assure me of my 50%, if you agreed with my condition. Confirm Now. Thanks & Best Regards. |

After viewing store video of the robbery in Ferguson, I think that what happened a short time later was just a lucky coincidence. |

[Workers are slaves] A little bit of slavery is still slavery. Then what are people that don’t work? They must be the masters because they’re benefiting from someone’s slavery. |
No wonder Ed is cutting out Sundays after reading the diz-bangs that posted yesterday. They really come out of the pews for sure! |
Winn Dixie is putting in a liquor store. The chains only go where money leads them. The fact that Walgreens & WD put in liquor stores even though Big Pine had two mom and pop shops already is a testament to how many boozers have moved here from someplace else. There’s apparently enough of them to support them all. A sad statement on what the Lower Keys have become.Does WD have a liquor store in Marathon? I don’t know. Does Walgreens or Publix? Nope! The rumor is in Marathon, if you try to put another liquor store up in Marathon, some of the competition might try to have you killed. That’s just a rumor though. |
A cop in Ferguson killed just one of a seemingly endless supply of dangerous wild animals masquerading as human beings. Good for him and us. Time to move on. That dead creep had no claim on our standard rules of justice that he mocked by his lifestyle of grabbing whatever he wanted. As these slags multiply into an overwhelming mass, it will become time to reduce their numbers to a manageable level, all in the name of self preservation of somewhat more normal people. However, this all goes back to the fundamental fact that there are way too many people on board for this planet to sustain. But all you little gals better produce if you want some grandma bucks. Go ahead and have your fun, it’s too late anyway. |
How come we are not seeing anything on Fox News about Bob McDonnell, Virginia Republican Governor who is on trial for breaking various laws? Oh that’s right, Fox is too busy with important stuff like hounding vacationing Obama and Al Sharpton for us. |

Obama and Golf- Nice try on the typical left-wing Fox News rant, but you may want to look at Sunday’s very left-leaning New York Times. Maureen Dowd ripped O a new one for playing golf and ignoring everything else. “Logic- we don’t need no stinkin’ logic.” |
Deer Friends, my most sincere thanks for the kind words and e-mails for Mrs. FTR. Last night everything was rosy, she was walking and recovering very nicely. Overnight that all changed. As of about 7:00 am she was in great pain and it appeared that a drain that had been installed in her cervical spine was not operating appropriately. The surgeon decided by noon that it would be necessary to reopen the surgical site, examine, and take appropriate measures. The surgeon had installed a “patch” on the covering of her spinal cord and certain nerves that had been breached during the initial surgery. There was evidence that that patch had failed. The surgeon decided to reopen the surgical site, revisit the patch, and to install a drain in her lumbar spine to take pressure off of the cervical patch. The new surgery lasted for about 5 hours, but the surgeon tells me that all went very well. It was the longest 5 hours in my life. He doubled up on the “patch” and was very confident that the repair would work. He has decided to put her in ICU for about 5 days so as to appropriately service the lumbar drain. While she is sleepy and somewhat confused, her spirits are good, and I am convinced that she will make a full recovery. Thank God |
