Since its Memorial Day, everyone should do something to say thank you to a vet.

My favorite one is Kevin K.  He lives in the lower Keys nursing home on Stock Island. He is a Vietnam vet and has no legs. He has been in nursing homes for 20 years. Kevin is in his 70s now. He had a friend that had a son who was helping him get a few needful things. When his friend’s mom died, that all stopped. Kevin likes Marlboro cigarettes, red licorice, fast food and told me he craves a McDonald’s hamburgers. He has a clear mind and really enjoys it when I bring him anything.

He is usually reading a book in his old fashioned wheel chair. He completely cares for himself, but the only care facility for him in the Keys is a nursing home. You can find him most days in a shady spot of the parking lot, reading and enjoying peacefulness. He receives $35 a month spending money. Picture yourself on that budget.

If you want to give him cash, pop in the nurses desk. It will go to his account. Please don’t embarrass him, stop by and drop anything, fast food, cigarettes, beer … opps … I said beer. Yes this man is a grown up and can have 1 or 2 beers, not 6.

All it takes is one look at Kevin to make me appreciate that we live in a free country because young men like him were soldiers.

Happy Memorial Day

There are many things that amaze me about our local government and utilities. This wind turbine thing is beyond understanding. Why would anyone in charge allow our money to be spent on wind turbines to generate electricity without knowing if they meet code. As I understand it they must be installed at least 57 feet high. That’s appx. 20 feet over code. Who gave the OK to buy them?  Why would the person in charge not know or check Monroe County code? What kind of folks do we have running our local government?

The last part I already know, that’s who is paying for the cost of buying & installing & legal fees. Us, that’s who.

[Insurance] If half the real estate people don’t know, how can a home owner, that is now struggling, and will lose their home know? I’m a Realtor, I’ve been sharing this website with my customers and peers in the profession. Link

NFIP Reform legislation passed as Title II of the Transportation Bill (H.R. 4348) and was signed into law (PL 112-141) on July 6, 2012. Among other things, it raised the limit on annual premium increases to 20% (from 10%) and requires FEMA to submit a ten-year repayment plan for the program’s debt to the U.S. Treasury, most of which was incurred during the 2005 hurricane season. The solvency and debt-reduction requirements – together with the raising of the limit on annual premium increases to 20% – virtually ensure that premiums will be going up across the board. But they will go up faster on properties that are too low in the flood zone and losing their subsidies.

1)      Pre-FIRM rates are being discontinued for all business properties and other buildings that are not someone’s primary residence. Pre-FIRM rates for currently insured properties expire with termination of an existing policy and are not available for a new policy on the property. Currently insured properties that no longer qualify for Pre-FIRM rates will see their premiums increase 25% per year until actuarial rates are achieved.

2)      Grandfathered rates are being discontinued, with premium increases toward actuarial rates being phased in over a 5-year period, 20% of the increase being added each year.  The five-year period begins on the Effective Date of the FIRM that identifies the increased risk. For example, if the actuarial rate is $1000 per year more than the subsidized rate, the premium would increase $200 per year for five years.

One other note from the website.  When a property is sold, it will no longer be subject to Pre-Firm rates. This means the new property owner’s flood insurance will be at the NEW actuarial rate upon closing.  New owners will not get the benefit of the 4 or 5 year incremental increases.

Why doesn’t Keys Energy relocate the windmills to No Name Key? They would look beautiful on the island and make everybody feel oh, so green.
In the near future your smartphone, while still in your pocket, will act as a broadcaster so when you say, “Computer. Directions to 29 Pretty Lane.” Up pops a holographic image of the map to 29 Pretty Lane with audio walking or driving directions or anything else you can imagine.

Want to see the fjords of Norway, but don’t have the time or money?  Enjoy the complete cruise of M/S Nordnorge from Bergen to Kirkenes in 37 minutes. The original footage was 8040 minutes. The speed in this time lapse varies between 100x to 300x normal speed. Footage is from the live broadcast “Hurtigruten Minutt for Minutt” aired on Norwegian television in June, 2011. Video

As a Vietnam vet I am sick of people thanking me for my service. I didn’t want to go, it was a sacrifice not a service.

I think about whether Keys Energy’s wind turbines are high wind proof. Do we buy wind insurance for them and if so, what do we pay?

an_hearrt-bow[Fear Factory Posters] To all the anti-terrorism / anti-Muslim fear factory posters out there. More people die annually from heart disease, stroke, lower respiratory infections, pulmonary disease, diarrhea, HIV/AIDS, lung cancer, tuberculosis, diabetes and traffic accidents than terrorist attacks. As a matter of fact terrorist attack is not even on the top 100 leading causes of death.

Why don’t you stay stay inside, polish your guns, and watch some more news on the television?  I will be outside enjoying the beautiful world we live in.  If I happen to fall victim to a terrorist attack I know because of my faith in the true god I will enjoy everlasting life in paradise. Fear and hate is not living — loving is living.

A friend who worked there said the only things the Pentagon is scared of are the Pope, the Mob and Google. “Why”, I asked? He said, “That’s Classified!”

cloud-hello[The Cloud for Dummies] I’m so happy with the Cloud. Because of the Cloud’s storage ability I’ll never worry about saving a document, note or letter again.

For my cloud app I’m presently using Google Drive, a free Cloud service from you-know-who. I use their free document app for writing different stuff. When the computer is on the app is always opened in my browser (a “browser” is the app you use to get on the Internet, like Internet Explorer or Chrome). I set the Google Drive cloud app as my home page so when I open the browser there it is.

With this Google Doc opened automatically within the Google Drive app I can type any thought, note or reminder instantly and it saves itself automatically. No worries. Better yet, I can just as easily open the app on my little tabletphone (I think that name is a better description for the smartphone. I use mine almost exclusively as a tablet computer. Rarely do I use the phone app, instead I use the email app to communicate.)

[Big Brother] Anybody else notice that when you click on a suggestive or controversial web link, your browser hesitates or even gives you a weird error message until you reboot the browser? This seems only to happen with politically questionable or something Big Brother might be interested in. Why?

[“Selling out of the Keys”] There are so many for sale signs because the Keys are basically a long resort and resorts are very expensive to live in and all resorts have high turnover of sales.

usa27Lowe’s is now selling American flag doormats. As the 4th of July is approaching, many stores are trying to increase their profits. Needless to say, the selling of American Flag doormats has many Veterans upset. Veterans feel that they fought for the American Flag, many losing their lives, and many permanently injured for the freedoms that the American flag represents, yet Lowe’s is now selling the American flag as a doormat, ” something to be walked on, and something to wipe your feet on”, as one veteran put it. “Are they slapping our faces or what”, asked another veteran.

The V.F.W, the American Legion, and several other organizations were immediately contacted. A veteran with 33 years in the U.S. Navy, had gone to Lowe’s to buy $300.00 worth of lumber to build a fence, but when he saw the American Flag doormat, he flipped out, made Lowe’s take back the lumber and refund his money. Several others walked out of the store.

At the Lowe’s in N. Charleston , SC , the manager took all the doormats off of display because of complaints and called Lowe’s headquarters to report the consumer’s and veterans complaints.

Those who grew up respecting the American flag, and those who fought to defend it, would never let the American Flag touch the ground, much less use it as a doormat, to walk on or wipe your feet on it!

[Hypocrites] Does anyone besides me, find it odd that we accuse Cuba of keeping political prisoners and yet we keep most of our political prisoners right there in Cuba?

[“Why are so many people selling out of the Keys”]  There’s always been an ebb and a flow down here. The economy is not what it once was and neither are the Keys. It’s become a gentrified version of what it once was.   Most of the fish in the restaurants is imported not local. It cost more to go catch a fish than you pay for the imported. A beer is now a $4.50 or more a pint. Gone are the days of cheap drafts We got FWC, KWPD, MCSO, MCFD, NOAA, NWS, Sanctuaries, protected areas, laws about fish hooks yada yada yada (Gawd, I feel so safe!) The sewer project, insurance issues, N. Roosevelt no road work. What other reasons would you need?

[Justice] How come you can rape a woman or kill a man and just get three years jail time, but if you watch kiddie porn in your own home you get 30 years? I’m not in favor of any crime, but 30 years is an injustice in itself. The penalties should be reversed. Rape and murder are far worse than watching kiddie porn.

[Big Brother] I just saw the old movie 1984 with Richard Burton. The thought hit me like a ton of bricks. That movie showed a way of life where people have no choice, no freedom, no nothing the State will not allow. Then I watched a short YouTube video on the Koran and how Muslims live. The similarities are terrifying. I want no part of Islam!

[Noseeums] Get a mosquito magnet. It not only works on mosquitos but gets noseeums as well.  The residential mosquito magnet will clear out an acre and the industrial kind are used on Little Palm Island. They are expensive to run, but they work.

[Muslims] A British soldier was stabbed and beheaded on the streets of London. Yes, beheaded. When are the Christians of this world going to stand up and say “enough is enough” to the Muslims?  Those two Muslims that murdered the soldier should be tried, convicted and shot the next day.

Only Republicans, the  guardians of truth, justice, and the American Way, should be allowed to wage expensive unjustified war, get thousands of our troops killed and maimed,  kill hundreds of thousands of civilians, torture anyone they deem necessary,  and let the Country fall apart while further enriching the wealthy great god almighty sacred businessmen.

[Bias] Why would Fox news not expose Obama and his toadies? IRS?  Eric Holder? Something is about to go down and its not going to be Fox news. People see what they want to see and a lot of lefties are not going to dig what’s about to come out of the s**t pipe. Trust me, its going to stink.

an_arabic2Yesterday a poster reminded us all that the rafts of nations falling under the  thrall of Muslim fundamentalism are not American nations. That poster suggests that international Muslim Fundamentalism is not an American problem. I believe that notion is foolishly wrong. The sorry and dangerous fact is that the power of Muslim fundamentalism is growing by leaps and bounds throughout the world. Since Obama and the Democrats seized control of our governance the trajectory of Muslim power has skyrocketed.

Many European nations are recognizing this fact. Sweden is currently suffering from widespread Muslim fomented unrest. The Muslim population in many European countries is burgeoning. England has just experienced yet another act of Muslim Fundamentalist violence.

Is there any sentient person who can believe that the terrorism, the jihadist convictions, and the deep seated hatred for all that is not Islam  that is at the very core of Muslim Fundamental is not a serious threat to our society? Perhaps there is at least one who sees no threat to our society from militant Islamism, perhaps that person is Barak Hussein Obama. Since Obama has been our President the international assessment of the American resolve to protect its allies has plummeted. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Islam is the world’s fastest-growing religion by number of conversions each year.. Since Barak Hussein had been our President, Muslim fundamentalists have taken control of more governments than in any time in our history. We have a rich tradition and constitutional right to freedom of and from religion. Unfortunately in the Muslim tradition and ethic, religion and governance are one. Deer Friends, that is why we should be worried about the explosion of the Muslim religion and of the explosion of the  power of Muslim ruled nations.

cifinPart 2) The following was received from a friend in my e-mail.  I thought it worth sharing:

This part you don’t know, but  should. Benghazi “what difference does it make?”

The stunning part of this story is  that Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty killed 60 of the attacking  force.  Once the compound was overrun, the attackers were  incensed to discover that just two men had inflicted so much death and  destruction.

The news has been full of the  attacks on our embassies throughout the Muslim world, and in particular,  the deaths of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others in Benghazi,  Libya.

However, there’s a little known  story of incredible bravery, heroics, and  courage that should be  the top story.

So what actually happened at the  U.S. embassy in Libya?  We are learning more about this every  day.  Ambassador Stevens and Foreign Service officer Sean Smith,  along with administrative staff, were working out of temporary quarters  due to the fact that in the spring of 2011 during the so-called Arab  Spring, the United States cut ties with then president Moammar  Gadhafi.  Our embassy was looted and ransacked, causing it to be  unusable.  It is still in a state of disrepair.

Security for embassies and their  personnel is to be provided by the host nation.  Since Libya has  gone through a civil war of sorts in the past 18 months, the current  government is very unstable, and therefore, unreliable

A well-organized attack by radical  Muslims was planned specifically targeting the temporary U.S. embassy  building.  The Libyan security force that was in place to protect  our people  deserted their post, or joined the attacking  force.  Either way, our people were in a real fix.  And it should be noted that Ambassador  Stevens had mentioned on more than one occasion to Secretary of State  Hillary Clinton,  that he was quite concerned for his personal  safety and the welfare of his people.  It is thought that  Ambassador Stevens was on a “hit list.”

A short distance from the American  compound, two Americans were sleeping.  They were in Libya as  independent contractors working an assignment totally unrelated to our  embassy.  They also happened to be former Navy Seal’s.

When they heard the noise coming  from the attack on our embassy, as you would expect from highly trained  warriors, they ran to the fight.  Apparently, they had no weapons,  but seeing the Libyan guards dropping their guns in their haste in  fleeing the scene, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty snatched up several of  these discarded weapons and prepared to defend the American compound.

Not knowing exactly what was taking  place,  the two Seal’s set up a defensive perimeter.   Unfortunately Ambassador Stevens was already gravely injured, and  Foreign Service officer, Sean Smith, was dead.  However, due to  their quick action and suppressive fire, twenty administrative personnel  in the embassy were able to escape to safety.  Eventually, these  two courageous men were overwhelmed by the sheer numbers brought against  them, an enemy force numbering between 100 to 200 attackers which came  in two waves.  But the stunning part of the story is that   Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty killed 60 of the attacking force.   Once the compound was overrun, the attackers were incensed to discover  that just two men had inflicted so much death and destruction.

As it became apparent to these  selfless heroes, they were definitely going to lose their lives unless  some reinforcements showed up in a hurry.  As we know now, that was  not to be.  I’m fairly certain they knew they were going to die in  this gun fight, but not before they took a whole lot of bad guys with  them!

Consider these tenets of the Navy  SEAL Code:

1) Loyalty to Country, Team and  Teammate,

2) Serve with Honor and Integrity  On and Off the Battlefield,

3) Ready to Lead, Ready to Follow,  Never Quit,

4) Take responsibility for your  actions and the actions of your teammates,

5) Excel as Warriors through  Discipline and Innovation,

6) Train for War, Fight to Win,  Defeat our Nation’s Enemies, and…

7) Earn your Trident every day  Link

Thank you, Tyrone and Glen.  To the very last breath, you both lived up to the SEAL Code.  You  served all of us well. You were courageous in the face of certain  death.

And Tyrone, even though you never  got to hold your newborn son, he will grow up knowing the character and  quality of his father, a man among men who sacrificed himself defending  others.
