Letters to the editor with pictures since 2002. Published on Big Pine Key’s garbage days, Tuesdays and Fridays.
Please, do not feed Key Deer simple starch products such as bread, corn, rice, chips, and pet kibble because those foods are empty calories! Deer are herbivores! They are designed to digest (and gain needed nutrition) mainly from cellulose. They need browse (leaves and twigs) and grasses. Key deer consume over 150 native Florida Keys plants! The macro and micro-nutrients and fiber contained in their natural foods (native vegetation) are critical for optimal health. Chronically feeding simple starches leads to health issues such as obesity and hoof deformity, including lameness, and we’ve seen this many times! Sure, humans can “survive” on candy and cookies but that would be bad for your health – it’s even worse for Key deer. Thank you. ~Valerie Preziosi, President – Save Our Key Deer, Inc. |
[Benefits Of Covid Mask #2] It prevents bad breath from offending others. |
[Do Not Call is Useless] Finally, the elections are done! I had it with getting robo-calls from all these election b**tards. What purpose is being on Do Not Call, do not text, do not email mean? I hope these flunky robo-operators die a terrible death. |

[Rip-Off] I bought clear, progressive lens eyeglasses and frame in Marathon for $712. At about the same time I bought another pair online for $34. The $712 glasses had a defective coating and were replaced. A few months later there was another problem with the lenses. This time they wouldn’t guarantee them because my 1 year guarantee had run out 4 weeks before. I asked why they weren’t guaranteed when this was a continuation of the same problem I had in the first place? I told the woman, “$712 and I’m left with useless, defective glasses or $34 online?” So much for my efforts to splurge locally during the apocalypse. I’ve never had a problem with online glasses. |
[Quarantine] The first word you see in this handy chart is where you are going in November. |
[Traffic Study] Recently the News Barometer reported that Local officials and staff have determined that the new traffic study task force should contain no one from the general public. Are the “local officials and staff” claiming that every one of the public is too stupid to understand? or is it that they don’t want us to know what’s going on behind closed doors? If the general public is too stupid, then what does it say about the election that just happened. That stupid public ousted mayor Carruthers—a mistake. |
Here is a question for all you mind readers out there. |

I have seen a lot of hate spewed in recent days about a man who is a constant winner and an overachiever, and that’s what the people who support him like about him. Yes, he’s been caught in some lies and maybe twisted the truth a little, but he’s still out there proving his haters wrong time after time. Some people are just jealous of someone who is successful and has money. Throw in a hot foreign underwear model at his side and they hate him even more. You may not have wanted him in his role, but he’s there now and there’s nothing you can do about it. I know its possibly just going to get worse over the next few days, but like him or not, Tom Brady is turning things around in Tampa. |
[Tribute Song] Kris Kristofferson provides an introduction and the background of the song “8th of November” from Big and Rich. The song is a tribute to their friend, Niles Harris, United States Army retired, who was one of the wounded soldiers that day and who gave Big Kenny his top hat. On the 8th of November 1965, the 173rd Airborne Brigade was in Vietnam on “Operation Hump” when they were ambushed by over 1200 Viet Cong fighters resulting in 48 American soldiers being killed in action. The fighting resulted in a Medal of Honor being awarded to a combat medic, Lawrence Joel, for saving so many lives during the battle that day. Video |

[Predicting Death] “People many times die three months from their birth date.” Three months before? three months after? That is 6 months–half the year. You would expect that many times people die within three months of their birthday because it’s a span of six months! You might think you have a 50-50 chance of dying three months from your birthdate but… Link |
(Ed: I get an anti-Semitic email almost every day trying to somehow tie Jews to everything unpleasant in the Keys and the world; going so far as to call bad people and businesses Jews when they are not. What kind of hate do these people carry to make this daily effort to spread their hate. They imply that only gentiles always do good. What possible outcome do they hope to achieve? I wonder if the emails are a concerted effort by a middle eastern hate group of hackers or some other hate group. If not, why would someone take the time and effort to only send anti-Semitic emails, never another topic. Also there’s never any proof offered to the supposed cheating and rip-offs. ) |
[Masks] It finally dawned on me that the mandate to wear a diaper on your mouth has very little to do with a virus and much more to do with the traditional use of a diaper. |
[Texting] I get pixxed-off when I email someone something, see them a month later and ask, did you like that picture? Huh? What picture? The one I emailed you last month? Oh, I don’t check my emails, can you text it to me? Ya right, wish in one hand and … you know what’s in the other. We live in Text World now, I guess. |
